Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Thanks @harriethoyle and @CrabPuff

You're right. Diets don't work but doing the 5:2 is a much more positive experience.

Katypp · 31/07/2024 11:14

Non fast day here again.
Menu is:
Breakfast: 2 massive boiled eggs (we have hens), slice seeded toast, butter, oj
Lunch: pease pudding, picked onion and crisp sandwich (trust me!) on an oven bottom muffin with the rest of the packet of low fat crisps
Dinner: cajun chicken pasta and flat garlic pizza bread.
Planned snacks: HM lemon drizzle cake, cherries, grapes, strawberries, 2 marmite rice cakes with cheddar spread, celery, babybel

Kitchen closed at 650 on the nose. I will be having an early night and then tomorrow having WHATEVER I like!

I think actually what I like in this instance is salmon ceviche so I need to find the recipe for that but not tonight otherwise it will rev up my hunger browsing recipes.

I’m not sure if I’ll weigh in tomorrow - in case I’ve gone up or something, I’m quite happy to log that 2lb loss!

Plan for next week is probably Tuesday and Wednesday again. Monday is too social.

I am heartily sick of that cottage pie so I need to find a 300 calorie alternative or 350 at a push.

OohMrDarcy · 01/08/2024 11:34

@MonkeyTennis34 - same as what the others have said, the key thing with this way of eating is its only 2 days a week.... if you try too hard to be 'good' the other 5 days it becomes unsustainable... so for example, we're having stuffed crust pepperoni pizza tonight (within TDEE) , tomorrow is FD and its chicken skewers and salad for me.... eat what you want on NFD as long as its in or around TDEE
Over time I find what I want to eat changes and I start to crave more healthy meals / veggies so the rest sorts itself out as time goes on - its a no pressure way of eating.

MonkeyTennis34 · 01/08/2024 13:30

@OohMrDarcy
It’s the eating around my TDEE on NFDs that I find hard…I just go a bit too mad!!

Incidently, according to Nutracheck, my TDEE is 1841! This seems very high to me.

Cherryblossom81 · 01/08/2024 16:54

Hello everyone. Can I ask a couple of questions about 5:2?

  1. Is it important to try to eat around TDEE calories on NFD?

I think I've got so 'used to' trying to stick to 1200 calories a day (I'm quite short, with only a few pounds to lose), so the 1750 that Nutracheck has given me for NFD feels a bit scary to try. I don't want to end up gaining weight! But I've also heard that it is important to not under-eat on NFD.

  1. Have any of you found that you've been more successful with 5:2 that with just daily low calories?

Mine is 2235 on Nutracheck!

Morning all

Checking in for Friday FD here. Got some delicious looking chicken skewers and salad for my dinner.

@Cherryblossom81 eating to TDEE on NFD is what makes it sustainable. I personally do a bit of a combination, so most days I eat to my GOAL TDEE, but then at least one day a week I eat to current TDEE so I don't feel like I'm depriving myself. Only aim for goal TDEE when I feel good to do it if that makes sense

seaduck · 02/08/2024 08:21

200g loss. I'll take that, as I've been stuck for ages so glad to see a loss despite the fact that summer holidays is causing chaos on my ability to get to the gym.

I agree, this is the only thing I've been able to stick to for longer than a few weeks - it's the thought that I can have stuff the next day that makes it sustainable. Just get through the day.

MonkeyTennis34 · 02/08/2024 08:26

@OohMrDarcy
What's a GOAL TDEE compared to an ordinary (Nutracheck) TDEE?

OohMrDarcy · 02/08/2024 08:36

congrats @seaduck !

@MonkeyTennis34 - TDEE is calculated off your weight / activity levels, so as you lose weight your TDEE reduces... I have calculated my goal weight TDEE here so my current TDEE is 1956, at goal weight it is 1560

so essentially when I feel fine I am for 1560 - for lots of reasons, but mainly it 'should' increase loss as further deficit, but also its training my stomach for how much I should actually eat to be at a healthy weight. HOWEVER - I don't do this if I'm feeling particularly hungry as I want the whole thing to be sustainable - so if I'm going out to eat I will choose sensibly, but not worry too much and if I'm hungrier I might have a bigger portion / dessert at home.... its only 400 cals difference so not 'go wild' levels

for info on the TDEE calculator - re activity levels, it was always recommended to level down your activity level on it (as most overestimate) I set mine to sedentary as I have a desk job.

How does the Fast Diet work? How many calories per day?

How the diet works and how much you should eat. Calculate your BMI, BMR and TDEE (the amount of calories you burn per day) on The Fast Diet official site.

https://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/

MonkeyTennis34 · 02/08/2024 08:40

Just calculated this..
So is the BMR my Goal TDEE?

5:2 thread 102: Faster than a speeding bullet!
OohMrDarcy · 02/08/2024 08:52

no - calculate again using your goal weight and then you have the two TDEE ooptions Smile

Katypp · 02/08/2024 09:55

FD today, weigh in tomorrow.
Breakfast: crumpet and poached egg
Lunch: chicken noodle Thai soup
Dinner: Leftover lasagne (1.5 portions between two of us, if thar makes sense) and salad.

MonkeyTennis34 · 02/08/2024 14:14

Goal TDEE is coming up as 1699.
It still sounds very nice!

Thank you @OohMrDarcy That makes sense to eat to goal TDEE.

OohMrDarcy · 02/08/2024 19:38

Kitchen closed on 581 today as I had to have a teeny slice of grilled halloumi

OohMrDarcy · 04/08/2024 07:36

Morning all

Hope you're all having a lovely weekend.

I've decided to do a FD today - I'm flying for work Monday/ Tuesday so may struggle to fit in my 2 FD next week ... Just deciding meals now - may end up a mini but want to do something to keep progressing.. especially with hotel food Monday to contend with!

CrabPuff · 04/08/2024 16:25

NFD today but was so impressed by a Sunday FD I had to comment!

I used to think travelling days would be easy to not eat on but they’re so not. The food punctuates the dullness of travel and you can’t be accurate on cals anyway.

I need to look at TDEE a bit more and also Cook! has a load of ready meals around 300 cals so that’s my next thing to research.

am in my not-quite-so-fat jeans today but they are quite tight around the waist. Sigh. But they’re on.

OohMrDarcy · 05/08/2024 06:11

Morning all

Managed a mini yesterday (just under 800 cals) I'll take that considering the complete lack of planning etc!

Weighed in this morning at 97.7kg meaning a loss of 0.7kg this week.

I'm fitting almost all of my size 16s now which I'm very happy with! Bought myself some mum jeans for the first time which I'm loving too!

Hey @CrabPuff everyone is different with what they find easy etc. I find it hard to drink enough water when traveling, as well as no chance of sticking to cals etc!

Good luck to all those fasting today , I'm off shortly but back tomorrow so will post again then!

MonkeyTennis34 · 05/08/2024 08:25

@OohMrDarcy well done on your loss!!

We were meant to be going away today for a short break to Suffolk but DS2 has been unwell for a few days with a flu-like virus.
Will see how he's feeling when he wakes up and decide what we're going to do.

harriethoyle · 05/08/2024 08:27

Morning all, anyone fasting with me today? Usual thin for lunch and chicken soup for dinner. Not sure yet if doing b2b, will depend on whether I can swap Thursdays exercise class to Tuesday…

Morning all. Back on this thread after falling off the wagon for a few months. Ticking off from my lovely doctor pulled me up. Last month for various reasons ate very unhealthily and now motivated again.
FD yesterday and was actually a relief. Weighed this morning and not good but only was is down!
Great support on this thread so thanks all.

Katypp · 06/08/2024 07:49

Is there anything more dispiriting than sticking to recommended calories all week then actually GAINING weight??
I actually gained nearly 1lb when I weighed in on Saturday. Went slightly off on Saturday, then back on wagon Sunday.
Fast day yesterday, back to Nutracheck calories today.
