5:2 thread 102: Faster than a speeding bullet!

harriethoyle · 22/06/2024 08:08

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Ok, weighed myself this morning and I am 40 lbs heavier than I was in my wedding day, 15 years ago. I need to change this slide!

I have had great success with 5:2in the past so trying again. Hi all!

berryhand · 12/08/2024 11:17

Hi everyone, I am returned. Been off for two weeks and away for one of them. Annoyed at myself for having dropped the ball so badly I've gone from being 2lb off initial target weight to 9lbs ffs

Back fasting tomorrow with my head properly in the game. New target of a stone off by Christmas which is extremely doable. Hope everyone is well.

MonkeyTennis34 · 12/08/2024 11:37

You would think the baking hot weather would stop me want to eat less.....it doesn't.

NFD here, aiming for Tuesday and Thursday as FDs this week, then post-holiday weigh-in Friday morning 😭

Have a fab Monday everyone!!

PersisFord · 12/08/2024 11:39

Hi everyone, thanks for the messages! My one task today was to weigh myself and I forgot until I was in the shower with sopping wet hair so I didn't. Have dusted off my my fitness pal for some calorie counting....

Good luck everyone!

Katypp · 12/08/2024 12:15

First day of two weeks off work today. Up at crack of dawn to take dh to airport, back home, 30 mins walking exercise regime, showered and back to bed by 7am!
FD today, menu is:
B: Bagel thin toasted with 1/8 tub Cheddar spread and one tomato
L: butternut squash and sweet potato soup
D: Veggie chilli and brown rice
Comes in at 630 calories, leaving potentially 170 for snack if needed.

harriethoyle · 12/08/2024 19:28

Not wholly successful at 757 - chickpeas in my lunch salad tipped me over! I’ll do a mini tomorrow to try and make up for it…

Chickpeas are so annoying! They are nice, but not enough to justify their calories.

I was so hot and busy at work I didn't have time to be hungry, then went for a walk with my friend. So only one meal which was a small steak and a salad. Not sure on how much I had (DH made it and didn't weigh anything) but pretty pleased for day 1.

Well done Monday people 💪

CrabPuff · 13/08/2024 09:02

Agreed on the chickpeas! They can mess up a whole salad calorifically but make all the difference to taste and texture. See also; walnuts and avocado.

FD today.

i was supposed to have a lunch yesterday that got moved to Thursday after I’d had breakfast so definitely fasting today as I didn’t yesterday and while not dying to do a B2B I feel like Thurs lunch might get moved anyway. But we’ll see.

I wasn’t massively in the mood but will just push on through, the heat is helping a bit. Maybe a mini twister can be squeezed in to the calorie count.

harriethoyle · 13/08/2024 10:17

I definitely would have rather gone over my calories with a nice glass of rose or an ice cream!

FD here.
Just had breakfast- low fat Greek yogurt and berries.

Lunch will be a salad with a few olives (surprisingly low in calories, hurrah!) and a hard boiled egg as well as some leaves, radishes, cucumber and cherry tomatoes. A pear.

Dinnner will be a 1/3 portion of HelloFresh roasted veg with lentils meal..194ish cals.

Will have to have my treat of oat milk latte and 2 malted milk biscuits..265 cals but it keeps me sane.

Total cals 653...will try and stay under 800.

PersisFord · 13/08/2024 14:49

I agree that olives have a lot of taste bang for their buck!

I weighed myself this morning with dry hair and was down 500g so that's good. TMI but it's day 2 of my period and I feel like I've lost that much in blood, I think perimenopause is beginning!!

Fruit and salad for lunch. Hoping to reduce down this week so next week when I start the FD isn't too.much of a shock!!

Good luck everyone

Lucylurker · 13/08/2024 15:16

Hi all just checking in to keep me in the straight and narrow. Weighed today after my first week and no movement on the scales so a bit disappointed. I am going to assume it’s a slow start and will start shifting soon. At least it wasn’t up.

Fasted yesterday and went well. Trying to be more careful as well on my nfds.
Good luck everyone and newcomers.

berryhand · 13/08/2024 15:42

Checking in, hope everyone is well. FD today, have had a small Activia yoghurt, an orange and a banana. Bloody starving, although in the office doing lots of meetings so well distracted.

MonkeyTennis34 · 13/08/2024 16:57

Bloody hell @berryhand that's hard core!!

I'm surprised you haven't fainted...are you drinking anything to keep you going?

berryhand · 13/08/2024 17:01

Yes lots of water and peppermint tea! I will eat some noodles as well this eve so don't worry.

PersisFord · 13/08/2024 17:02

Stay strong @berryhand . Agree with @MonkeyTennis34 , drink lots of water....

I'm going out for dinner tonight....am sure that 500g will be back tomorrow and more!!

seaduck · 13/08/2024 17:48

FD here. Not actually eaten yet, trying to power through and have a "normal" meal with the kids, chicken curry with the aforementioned dreaded chickpeas although not sure I'll be able to have rice with it. My NFDs are out of control, we went camping over weekend and I feel like I ate everything in sight.

CrabPuff · 13/08/2024 19:04

So - 502 so far after my low cal fish pie. Pretty sure I’m coming down with something so I’m not sure I’ll have a hot chocolate tonight and today wasn’t that hard, thankfully.

Thursday is looking more definite for my swapped lunch and I have friends staying on Friday night so tomorrow is the only option for FD2.

that said if I just close the kitchen now, in theory I can have 800 but I don’t know how effective that’ll be. I feel like B2B don’t work as well as separate days but then I don’t have scales that work, so what do I know! And I do need to record my NFD cals with more diligence.

OohMrDarcy · 14/08/2024 08:22

morning all

FD here today - moved from yesterday as I wanted to enjoy the planned dinner!

harriethoyle · 14/08/2024 08:26

I’m joining you @OohMrDarcy cous cous with fecking chickpeas 🤣 (last portion tomorrow) and a fish cake for tea. Should be c600 I hope…

OP posts:
Katypp · 14/08/2024 08:58

NFD for me today.
After the last two disastrous weigh-ins, I am trying to stick to 2000 calories on my NFD instead of Nutracheck's recommended 2300
Brunch: Cheese and ham omelette
Toast and scrape of butter = 562

Leaves about 1400 for pub meal out tonight so I can go a bit wild

FD tomorrow instead of Friday to accommodate yet another meal out on Friday lunchtime!

CrabPuff · 14/08/2024 09:22

Checking in for FD2 of the back to back. Plan is the Bol massaman curry which I haven’t tried before for lunch (396 cals which is a bit high for lunch usually). Hopefully it’s good.

There’s nothing in the way today that could be annoying and I’m already looking forward to a croissant for breakfast tomorrow!

berryhand · 14/08/2024 09:35

Good luck today's fasters. I'm NFD today but struggling to work out when I can do FD2 this week.

In the office tomorrow so might attempt it then, although Thurs is drinks night. I might just stick to the diet coke...

MonkeyTennis34 · 14/08/2024 12:46

Enjoying a NFD day.
Planning on having a portion of chips from the chip shop 🙌🏻

Holy moly, medium portion according to Nutracheck is 608 cals!!

Should still be under TDEE.

CrabPuff · 14/08/2024 19:46

Kitchen closed on 673 - could have finished on 502 but had to have a hot chocolate before bed. And bed can’t come soon enough.

glad it’s done with and I’m not doing tomorrow!

12/25 FDs is my tally.

I’ve had to literally make a list of bullet points to look at the morning of FDs to remind myself why I’m happy to do it! Otherwise I really can veer off to the side with things like telling myself I can “do it tomorrow” instead of “have it tomorrow” which leads to just not doing it for weeks and being pointless.

Croissant coming up tomorrow!
