Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Welcome @rtr1492 jump on in! What has made you feel rotten with fast 800 do you think?

Kitchen closed on 530 today, happy with this weeks fasts

I think probably due to the volume of food/sugar/carbs I was consuming up until Sunday, my body is wondering what’s going on! I feel weak, like not just tired but limbs heavy, can barely keep eyes open kinda weak 🙁

MonkeyTennis34 · 26/07/2024 20:00

@Katypp
Not really.
I tend to be very relaxed on my NFDs!

MonkeyTennis34 · 26/07/2024 20:01

@rtr1492
That's exactly how I felt a couple of days ago...I could have slept all day.

rtr1492 · 26/07/2024 20:10

@MonkeyTennis34 I’ve had an apple with some peanut butter this evening 😬

MonkeyTennis34 · 26/07/2024 20:13

Eek! Well done you!
I'm tucking into an M and S spiced bun right now 😂

Think I'm overindulging a little bit too much....

OohMrDarcy · 29/07/2024 08:30

morning all - weighed in this morning at 98.4kg which is a loss of 1.4kg or around 3lb! Over the moon with that after a funny couple of weeks.

FD today and have a stir fry planned for dinner.... already done a 2 mile walk (early for the pooch before it gets hot) and drunk a bottle of water so fingers are crossed for a good day.

Have a stir fry planned for dinner

anyone else joining me ?

Katypp · 29/07/2024 11:22

Me! Lost 2lb last week, fast day today. I have 800 calories on fast days as I have around 6 stones to lose and 500 calories was too little at the mo.
Meal plan:
Breakfast: Bagal thin with 1/8 tub cheddar spread and a sliced tomato = 177 calories
Lunch: carrot and coriander soup (BBC recipe) = 134 calories
Dinner: Salmon fishcake and some sort of tomato and veg stew/sauce: About 400 calories and haven't weighed the leftover mash or devised the tomato thing yet!

harriethoyle · 29/07/2024 11:38

Good morning (just!)! Forgot to sign in

I am here today and tomorrow - tuna thin for lunch, chicken salad for tea today. Still no scales but am persevering and this morning had to take two size 12 dresses to the seamstress to be taken in which was very pleasing.

Happy Monday everyone!

Kitchen closed on 538 here just my nighttime tea to go in a bit

MonkeyTennis34 · 29/07/2024 20:26

@Katypp @OohMrDarcy
Well done losers!!!

I’m not really sure what I’m doing today…somewhere between a FD and NFD!
Think I’ll finish on 1000 cals.
Did a strength workout today, couldn’t go on the treadmill as it’s been far too hot!

seaduck · 29/07/2024 20:32

Well done everyone! Some great losses.

Fell off the wagon last week a bit as had somebody visiting so only did one FD and one out of 3 gym sessions that I normally do. Back on it today though. Annoyingly scales have run out of battery so don't know what the damage was until can get a new one tomorrow. Gym scales said 1.2kg up but wasnt my normal scales/first thing in the morning and I did have my gym kit including trainers on so could be anything really.

harriethoyle · 30/07/2024 08:05

Morning all - anyone with me today? Tuna thin for lunch and chicken soup for dinner. Already looking forward to tomorrow’s breakfast 🤣

OP posts:
MonkeyTennis34 · 30/07/2024 08:10

@harriethoyle
Good luck for today.
I'm going to try and stick to circa 1000 cals a day this week.
On holiday next week so service will resume the week after.

Katypp · 30/07/2024 09:48

Non fast day today, sticking to Nutracheck's 2235 calorie recommendation, which always seems like a massive amount as a child of 1000 calorie a day 1980s diets!
I do have a lot to lose though and it seems to be working so far.
I genuinely struggle to eat all the calories though. I used to do WW in the days when there was a forum and used to roll my eyes at people claiming to 'struggle to eat all my points' yet here I am.
In my defence, my day so far is:
Breakfast: overnight oats with lemon curd yoghurt, strawberries, apple and cherries
Lunch: Naice ham salad with coleslaw, potatoes, salad cream and beetroot
Dinner: Hake tagine with couscous.
Snacks planned: cherries, strawberries, grapes, piece of HM cake
Still leaves me 546 calories to play with

OohMrDarcy · 30/07/2024 11:26

morning all

NFD here and looking forward to my jamie oliver chicken and mushroom pie for dinner!

Hope today is going well @harriethoyle

good luck @MonkeyTennis34 - that sounds tough! Worth it for the holiday though Smile

@Katypp - don't forget to include drinks, if you have that much to play with you can include some refreshing juice etc if you like... if you're anything like me its hard to eat my cals when eating 'well' super easy when I'm existing on crap and gaining though Angry

CrabPuff · 30/07/2024 13:30

Day 1 of a B2B today - so hot it’s not too much of a problem to resist (I say that now!).

I think tomorrow will be harder - and I had a big greedy weekend so I don’t anticipate any loss this week!

harriethoyle · 30/07/2024 14:04

I agree @CrabPuff the heat really reduces my appetite. However, I am thinking longingly of tall glasses of ice cold lager. Or Pimms. Or pink wine...!

harriethoyle · 30/07/2024 20:50

Kitchen closing on 730. Didn’t check the calories on my low GI roll and turns out it was 263 calories! Vexing 🤣

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 30/07/2024 22:16

Kitchen closed on 676 - some melon fingers got me! But otherwise ok - Harriet, usually I DO have a longing for chilled pink wine on a sunny day but so much over indulgence this weekend I think my liver is begging for a break!

slight pang as last week on thinking I have to do it again tomorrow but actually Thursday doesn’t work at all so no choice in the matter. I could possibly do a mini but not much fun after a B2B

7/25 complete so far anyway. Must weigh in tomorrow and see where I’m at.

MonkeyTennis34 · 31/07/2024 07:34

I completely fell off the wagon yesterday and ended up having a very greedy, sugar-infused day.

This always happens when I follow a "diet".....I start off really well for the first couple of weeks then quickly lose momentum.

Never mind, I think it's more realistic for me to have another try after my week away next week, then try a bit (a lot) harder when I get back, to aim for a lighter me for our holiday in October.

CrabPuff · 31/07/2024 11:03

Checking in for day 2 - more heat! I think same as before, low cal ready meals. Not very inspiring but I get 2 meals and the volume of food is good.

then can be normal tomorrow and rest of the week!

Monkey - definitely come back with determination after your holiday. I also am a bit like that with “diets” but I do find 5:2 easier as it is only dieting for 2 days. Mantra is “I can have it tomorrow!”

I also tell myself that anyone can diet for one day. Anyone. And if they’re not back to back days, it’s great.

harriethoyle · 31/07/2024 11:08

That's exactly why you need to reframe fasting as a way of life rather than a diet @MonkeyTennis34 I'm the same as you can't stick to traditional diets, but have been fasting for coming up 8 years now. I find the thought that I can have wine/cheese/buttered toast within a couple of days makes it much easier to stick to.

Also - everyone has FD fails! Don't let it derail, just start back when you can 😃
