5:2 thread 102: Faster than a speeding bullet!

harriethoyle · 22/06/2024 08:08

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Staying the same @MonkeyTennis34

seaduck · 21/07/2024 21:21

@OohMrDarcy thanks - really trying not to let stuff like that get to me as I think in the past I might have given up. Will try to be a bit better on the NFDs this week. Also my period due and I seem to still be same weight again this week, I usually hold a bit of weight before period so hoping that will be a loss once it works it's way through.

The Domino's does sound good though!

OohMrDarcy · 22/07/2024 08:24

morning all

Weighed in at 99.8kg this morning meaning a teeny loss of 100g!

That pizza certainly taught me a lesson!

Back to it today with a FD today, am going with one main meal today of ginger, coriander and lime chicken with Singapore rice noodles and beansprouts.

anyone else weighing in or FD today?

harriethoyle · 22/07/2024 08:39

Morning @OohMrDarcy I’m FD today and tomorrow. Still no scales because of building works chaos 🤣🙈 clothes are fitting though!

Just glugging my way through coffee now and contemplating whether I want to do B2B to get it all out of the way. I’m not especially hungry so far so I should probably decide in the morning!

Cherryblossom81 · 22/07/2024 15:39

Hi all. I'm still lurking a bit on here, whilst trying to decide whether to try 5:2. I only have a few pounds to lose, but despite only eating around 1200 calories every day (I'm quite short) I'm not losing anything. Frustrating!

If I decide to give 5:2 a try, I just had a question about NFD. Should I stick with 1200 calories on NFD? I've read that you should eat maintenance calories on NFD but obviously don't want to be eating more than I'm currently eating. Thank you.

OohMrDarcy · 22/07/2024 18:38

Kitchen closed on 488 here, happy with that.

@Cherryblossom81 the idea with 5:2 is that your deficit is on the FDs. So you calculate your TDEE and aim to eat that on your NDD (there are calculators online )

harriethoyle · 22/07/2024 21:15

698 here and day 2 of the b2b tomorrow 👍🏻

CrabPuff · 22/07/2024 21:22

Kitchen closed on 569 and still up in the air as to whether I can do 650 tomorrow or will be so ravenous. MUST find a place to weigh in accurately. I’ve always done better weighing in regularly. Ugh.

Cherryblossom81 · 23/07/2024 06:22

Thank you @OohMrDarcy

CrabPuff · 23/07/2024 20:15

Ok - 2nd day of the B2B done - kitchen closing on 667.

little bit white knuckle but I’ll be so glad tomorrow I’ve done it so, that’s what I’m clinging to.

6/25 so far.

if I give it enough thought and pay Waitrose a visit, I could possibly get a mini in on Thursday. Their calorie controlled meals are not bad.

harriethoyle · 23/07/2024 21:24

Totally forgot about today’s horrid work thing. So I’m fasting tomorrow instead!

MonkeyTennis34 · 24/07/2024 07:52

Starting my first ever b2b today then weigh-in on Friday morning.

Last few days have involved far too much sugar do I think b2b is needed!

harriethoyle · 24/07/2024 08:53

I’m with you @MonkeyTennis34 cous cous for lunch, fishcake for dinner. Will be c 650 🤞🏼

MonkeyTennis34 · 24/07/2024 10:23

@harriethoyle
Best of luck to you.
Fruit and yoghurt for brekkie
Green salad and hummus with 3 Peters Yard crackers (they are your friend)
Dinner chicken skewer with green salad

MonkeyTennis34 · 25/07/2024 07:42

I felt quite unwell yesterday on my first b2b day so I'm going to have an NFD today and do my final FD tomorrow.

I honestly believe I have an extreme sugar addiction and when I greatly reduce my sugar intake, it results in headaches and generally feeling rough.

harriethoyle · 25/07/2024 08:58

Closed on 690 last night. B2b mom/tues next week and possibly a third on Thursday.

Listen to your body @MonkeyTennis34 you know yourself best. If you do have a sugar addiction, it will get better slowly but be a bit grim getting past the first few days of restriction…

CrabPuff · 25/07/2024 10:59

Going for a mini FD today as have quite a booze fuelled weekend coming up.

did manage to weigh myself but it wasn’t exactly the same everywhere but I’ve logged it on MFP as 14st 12.

Assuming a loss of 1lb a week, I should be at that in the first week of Sept.

So 6/25 so far, not going to count minis as I don’t think I’ll suffer so much. Waitrose cottage pie for lunch with 307 calories and something similar this evening.

CrabPuff · 25/07/2024 20:41

Kitchen closed on today’s Mini FD at 909 calories. Not too bad.

think next week is Tuesday and Wednesday B2B but not certain.

OohMrDarcy · 25/07/2024 22:10

Evening all

Lots of good fasting happening I see

I'm checking in early for tomorrow's FD.

@MonkeyTennis34 - I agree with Harriet... Need to slowly reduce your regular intake I suspect of sugar before trying to restrict too much ... Better slow and steady than making yourself ill

MonkeyTennis34 · 26/07/2024 08:22

Weighed in at 9st 10.5lb this morning so really pleased with that.

Ended up at 700 cals-ish yesterday.
Didn't fancy a dinner, had some crackers and hummus with a punnet of gooseberries.
But then caved at 9pm and scoffed 4 of DD's jelly babies which cost me 88 cals!

According to Nutracheck, I should meet my target weight on 28th August. My holiday is 24th October so I haven't planned this very well..

OohMrDarcy · 26/07/2024 09:27

congratulations @MonkeyTennis34 !

rtr1492 · 26/07/2024 12:44

Hello, can I join? 😅 Started Fast800 on Monday and I’m 5lbs down, but looking to swap to 5:2 next week as I feel so rotten. I haven’t had any sugar cravings, and despite usually being an evening snacker I seem to be managing on fruit teas 😋

Did you follow nutracheck's calorie suggestions for non fast days too?

OohMrDarcy · 26/07/2024 19:14

Welcome @rtr1492 jump on in! What has made you feel rotten with fast 800 do you think?

Kitchen closed on 530 today, happy with this weeks fasts
