Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Sunday’s not the ideal fast day! I’m eking the time out but I can see I’m going to be having an early dinner at 6ish. I see a lot of weeding in my afternoon I think. Definitely better when it’s busy!

CrabPuff · 14/07/2024 22:08

I’m in bed and furiously hungry - kitchen closed on 613 but I took a lot of exercise today so I’m going to make it be 4/25. The exercise may have contributed to my ravenous appetite.

HOPEFULLY, the next FD is Weds, if not Thursday. I tried on my too tight jeans about 3pm to remind myself why I was doing this..

berryhand · 15/07/2024 07:44

Morning all, congrats on the loss @MonkeyTennis34!

Weigh in this morning and not lost a bloody pound. In fact have gained 0.1kg!

Might be something to do with all the weekend wine....

B2b today and tomorrow it is then. Really got to be more strict on NFDs.

OohMrDarcy · 15/07/2024 08:38

morning all

Monday weigh in at 99.9kg - I'm conflicted on this one lol - essentially I've hit my next mini target (yay!) but I also know I weighed in lower earlier in the week, in fact after FD1 last week!

BUT - I know the problem, I'm a tad bunged up if you know what I mean - so this weeks focus is drinking more water and eating more fibre on NFDs - I'm fine when fasting but not always making the best choices when not!

Monday FD for me, and have chicken and salad for dinner (see, fibre!) just planning out the rest of my cals for the day and meals for the week!

congrats on the sunday FD @CrabPuff - they can be tough or easy depending on your plans!

@berryhand - you know the drill, could be the wine, could be digestion but keep it going and it will sort itself out in the end.

harriethoyle · 15/07/2024 09:28

Congratulations @OohMrDarcy !! An excellent SV 😊

I'm joining you today, day 1 of a b2b and probably going to fast on Thursday too. NO IDEA what weight I currently am because scales are still buried in the house renovations storage crap room which is both freeing and anxiety inducing. Had a wine-y weekend and I am not feeling at all toned so maybe it's no bad thing I am dodging that bullet...!

Morning all, Joining in today after couple of weeks break, Day 1 water fast tho I forgot and ate 5 almond in the morning.

berryhand · 15/07/2024 09:53

Congrats @OohMrDarcy! Take the under 100 win!

@harriethoyle I could do with hiding my scales too after their refusal to tell me what I wanted to hear this morning.

MonkeyTennis34 · 15/07/2024 10:43

Thanks @berryhand

First FD of the week.

Just calculated day's cals at 750.

Just have to stick to it now...

SydneyCarton · 15/07/2024 12:30

Had planned an FD for today but I'm WFH instead of going into the office and realistically that doesn't work for me, so 16:8 instead (14 minutes to go!) and then FD tomorrow. Had a busy weekend as it was DS's birthday party on Sunday, so Saturday was taken up with prep and Sunday we were on the go all day - I don't feel like I ate much, but what I did eat wasn't great. We have a load of sausage rolls, quiches, crisps etc to eat up but also plenty of salad to bulk them out, and they're quite decent quality so should be OK.

OohMrDarcy · 15/07/2024 18:31

Kitchen closed on 527 today... Just made my nighttime tea. Going to go for an early night tonight I think as been knackered for a few days

strangerInStrangeLand · 15/07/2024 22:02

Success today, was not complete water fast may be had around 200 calories - a few spoons of this and that. was able to do a small workout and was not dying end of the day. may be better this way than complete water fast.
Next fast on Wednesday 500 calories. Planning to report of NFDs as well - without restrictions to begin with, junk shall we eaten and reported.

harriethoyle · 15/07/2024 22:21

Well done @OohMrDarcy and @strangerInStrangeLand - kitchen closed on 653 here after an epic railway failure turned my commute from 45 minutes to 3 hours and the dog was looking tasty I was so ravenous 😆 day 2 tomorrow, I've got an exercise class so will probably go slightly over cals so I don't faint..

OohMrDarcy · 16/07/2024 06:18

Well done all.

Good luck to those fasting today.

NFD for me

MonkeyTennis34 · 16/07/2024 08:37

NFD here too.
Looking forward to having some chocolate!

harriethoyle · 16/07/2024 10:51

I'm refashioning today as a mini rather than a full fast and will do another full FD on Thursday. c. 900 cals in lunch and tea so there's no point fooling myself that's a FD even on a b2b!!

OohMrDarcy · 19/07/2024 07:59

Morning all

Everyone is a bit quiet this week!

Friday FD for me today. Got Caesar salad for either lunch or dinner... Just working the rest out!

MonkeyTennis34 · 19/07/2024 08:05

Only a 0.5lb loss this week but it's going in the direction so onwards and downwards we go!

Happy weekend to all 😀

OohMrDarcy · 19/07/2024 09:34

congrats @MonkeyTennis34 !

Katypp · 19/07/2024 19:28

Is anyone else doing 800 calorie fast days?

OohMrDarcy · 19/07/2024 19:56

Kitchen closed on 513 today

Some do @Katypp and others use it as a starting point to work down from ... Feel free to jump in!

seaduck · 19/07/2024 21:10

Hi - joining in if that's okay, been doing 5:2 for about 5 weeks. I stick to 600 on FDs. Going really well so far, lost 5kg down to 106kg from 111kg, but last week I didn't lose anything. Hoping its just a temporary blip as finding it quite sustainable and enjoying seeing scales going down.

CrabPuff · 21/07/2024 08:01

Checking in, in advance of tomorrow, planning Monday and Weds at the moment.

have probably over eaten this week but not to an insane level and looking forward to tomorrow to reset again.

OohMrDarcy · 21/07/2024 09:29

welcome @seaduck , jump on in! Sounds like a fantastic start, well done! Occasional weeks of STS are normal depending on so many factors so don't worry at all unless it becomes a pattern

morning @CrabPuff - good plan for your FDs this week

I may have accidentally ordered Dominos last night (though a small instead of the medium I used to eat!) Still feeling bleurgh from it this morning, I need to remember this feeling! Going to be super good today in the hope it doesn't mess up my weigh in tomorrow too much! Given the pizza I have to be happy if I STS, but REEEALLLY want another loss!
wondering once again if there is some secret self sabotage going on at the moment, more reflection needed!

Onehappymam · 21/07/2024 13:45

Lost 10lb last month as I was super focused, but have let things slide the last few days/week. It’s the school holidays here and DH and me are off work too. The temptation to veg on the sofa in the evening with a gin is derailing my progress as I end up snacking and feel lazy the next day.

So it’s b2b FD for me today and tomorrow before we go on holiday. Needs must!

MonkeyTennis34 · 21/07/2024 15:10

@OohMrDarcy
Quick reminder please...what is STS?
