5:2 thread 102: Faster than a speeding bullet!

harriethoyle · 22/06/2024 08:08

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

@OohMrDarcy so close to under 100 now, it's going to feel great when you hit that!

I am going to try and resist anything more than a weekly weigh in, so will try not to weigh in again till next Monday morning. Otherwise if it's looking good after a FD I am not strict enough on NFDs.

OohMrDarcy · 08/07/2024 10:46

I know @berryhand its driving me slightly crackers -thats my next mini goal! I do wonder if there is a little bit of subconcious trying to self sabotage which I'm keeping an eye on as I could have hit it this week and last too.... am upping the water this week as I know that has tailed off and is often key for me!

OohMrDarcy · 08/07/2024 19:18

Kitchen closed on 477 today, super good choices and loads of water so fingers crossed for this week

harriethoyle · 08/07/2024 19:50

Kitchen closing here on c.570. Training day tomorrow then FD2 on Wednesday. Will do IF on Thursday and Friday too I think.

berryhand · 08/07/2024 20:33

Good work @harriethoyle and @OohMrDarcy. Kitchen closing on about 480 here. Getting a v early night.

MonkeyTennis34 · 08/07/2024 21:29

692 cals for me. Pleased with that for my first FD.

Stupidly did a session on the treadmill and felt a bit light-headed afterwards..

The evenings will prove the hardest I think. I usually enjoy copious amounts of cups of tea with copious amounts of biscuits to dunk.

Think I'll go to bed soon!

NippyCrab · 08/07/2024 21:54

I've been doing a healthy eating plan with a friend and we have a weigh in on a Friday. She does 16/8 and I have done it before but I felt sick in the mornings, I need to take meds first thing. DH has been off work for nearly 4 weeks after an operation and I've eaten so much, I'm dreading Friday. I was reading the 5:2 book and I think that would really work for me better.
DH goes back to work Thursday for a week away, the bunting is ready 🙌

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 08/07/2024 22:34

Well done everyone for your FDs. I failed miserably with mine today! 😔 I blame my period, which is due any time now. I'll try not to be too hard on myself and will plan another FD for Thursday

berryhand · 09/07/2024 09:04

Don't worry @EndlessGuineaPigCycle I have had about a million failed fast days over the last month!

TDEE for me today. Or a bit less if I can be disciplined enough

SydneyCarton · 09/07/2024 11:38

Not sure what my count was for yesterday's FD - I had a homemade flatbread with grilled marinated chicken which was good, and three pieces of chocolate orange (not so good, but tasted great). The bread was obviously quite carb-heavy but satisfying in a way that more processed foods don't always have.

MonkeyTennis34 · 09/07/2024 17:54

Not doing too bad on a TDEE day..

Yogurt and fruit for brekkie
Costa chocolate twist for lunch 🤫
Banana
Punnet of gooseberries
2 malted biscuits
Oatmeal latte
Dinner will be a chicken and giant couscous dish - my portion will be 316 cals.

Comes in at 1080 cals.

Although the night is young...

Hello! Re-entering the stalls again for a period of 5:2 living. It always works, it’s always the best way to “diet” as it affects no one else and you only have to concentrate twice a week but I swiftly forget all the benefits and move off and end up deciding I’ll do it tomorrow instead of I can have it tomorrow.

Current strategy is I can reward myself with something nice (massage / facial / flight / botox) after I’ve completed 25 FDs, no matter how long it takes. I actually do quite need (you know what I mean) the Botox so I hope it sticks! 2 down and FD3/25 tomorrow.

Having done it a few times before, I know that I HAVE to have nothing but coffee til the evening then I have a ready meal like a good fish pie for one or lasagne and I just eat it out of the tin foil wrapped in a tea towel so no washing up and v early bed.

fuck ups happen when I think of splitting my calories between lunch and the evening meal.

just posting for accountability - I’m never ever going to try another type of weight loss technique as none of them work so well or so flexibly for me. I just want to be in my slimmer jeans by Christmas!

harriethoyle · 10/07/2024 11:42

lololol @CrabPuff I'm off to get it done next Thursday... now needing two areas rather than the initial one and contemplating a third. Argh!!

IF today as a colleague has cake and champagne in the office for a Big Birthday, so will do FD proper tomorrow I think.

CrabPuff · 10/07/2024 22:03

Next Thursday I’ll be very jealous. It’s like an iron for the forehead. Love it.

FD 3/25 complete! Kitchen closed on 466 and looking forward to avocado breakfast tomorrow and no “dieting” at the weekend. Slightly wish I could weigh myself but no even floors and the gym machine is wildly inaccurate. Maybe Boots has a machine. Clothes as good a gauge as any.

harriethoyle · 11/07/2024 08:29

Morning all, checking for fd2 of the week and a gym class after work. Weights so hopefully OK to do on a fast day...

MonkeyTennis34 · 11/07/2024 13:13

FD2 of the week and I'm watching DH and DSs tucking into scrambled egg bagels 😋

My lunch will be 3 cream crackers and a salad........

CrabPuff · 11/07/2024 13:55

Oh other people eating in front of you is TOUGH! Impressive stuff.

weights is hopefully ok? I’ve done Body Pump fasted but definitely better on cardio.

I’m doing a bunch of cooking for the weekend but was strangely not too ravenous for breakfast, so that’s good.

berryhand · 11/07/2024 20:20

I'm impressed @CrabPuff and @harriethoyle I really struggle with weights on FD but can manage swimming.

Second FD of the week today, had my usual veg sushi and soba noodles but I was starving at about 3pm today so had a pressed fruit and nut bar.

Takes me to about 570 which is more than I'd like but not terrible. Thought I'd crack and eat everything this afternoon but managed to remain largely on track.

Next FD Monday. Hopefully my weekly weigh in plan will make me be sensible over the weekend...

OohMrDarcy · 12/07/2024 07:44

Morning all

Checking in for a Friday FD. Doing spag bol for the kids dinner tonight so I'll have a portion of Bolognaise and possibly a tiny bit of pasta (got to calculate my plan) ... No garlic bread will be tough but I can always have it another day!

Hope everyone is having a good week!

MonkeyTennis34 · 12/07/2024 07:53

First weigh in this morning.

Really pleased, I'm now 9st12.5lb so I've lost 2lb.

The hard bit now is to not go crazy on my NFDs....

Have a great weekend everyone, enjoy your NFDs.

OohMrDarcy · 12/07/2024 08:42

contratulations @MonkeyTennis34 !

MonkeyTennis34 · 12/07/2024 11:51

@OohMrDarcy
Thanks!
I know I won't be losing 2lb each week but hopefully it will level out at 1 lb a week.

harriethoyle · 12/07/2024 14:35

Successful FD yesterday, no idea of weight because we are having building work done and the main bathroom has two spare rooms of stuff packed into it, on top of my scales whilst we survive in the en suite alone! Quite freeing really...

FD x 2 next week and IF on non-FD's I think. Have a great weekend everyone!

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 12/07/2024 18:22

Well done on FDs done for the week - I have just looked at the diary for next week and I can’t do Monday or Tuesday and Weds looks a bit iffy so am going to have to do one on Sunday (which is pretty quiet so actually should be ok). Then try to get the second one in and out of the way on Wednesday.

I think my extremely tight size 14 jeans are my first goal - I can get them done up but I would definitely pop a major organ if I sat down in them. Not being able to get into them is usually the catalyst for me to start 5:2 again. I think 2 weeks should do it. And then size 12 is next.

OohMrDarcy · 12/07/2024 20:04

Kitchen closed on 524 today
