Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Thanks @harriethoyle and @eekwhatnow . My BMI was 35 at the start 😔 so I’ve still a looooong way to go and also partly explains why the first chunk has come off fairly rapidly (I know it will slow down at some point.) But def really motivating to stick with it!

aberjenagain · 11/02/2025 17:45

Also, congrats on getting through your first FD @eekwhatnow , you’ll be into the swing of things in no time 😊

sweetgingercat · 11/02/2025 18:23

Well done @aberjenagain that's a great start. And well done @SydneyCarton and @eekwhatnow.

Just finishing off the second day of a B2B. Feeling a bit hungry but hanging out away from the kitchen until supper!

sweetgingercat · 12/02/2025 01:29

Kitchen closed at 630, so feeling happy and looking forward to some nice rye toast tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 12/02/2025 08:11

Kitchen closed on 910 but I was absolutely ravenous to the point of not sleeping so I think I can conclude I can’t do b2b on b2b PT days! Going forward I think I’ll do Monday and Wednesdays and then I have Thursday as an option if required.

Yoghurt and granola was dreamy this morning and going for Japanese this lunchtime so I’ll go for sushi or something stir fried in the spirit of virtue! 🤣

FD for me today. I caved at about 4pm to have bowl of soup as I was struggling to concentrate (might also have been the tedious nature of my work today!) but I can now walk past the cupboard with the bar of chocolate without fear of an incident.

eekwhatnow · 12/02/2025 20:12

No idea how you manage to do b2b ones! I had another fast day today. Not quite as successful but finished on 583 so I think that's ok. Especially as I managed 1500 yesterday.
The weekend might be challenging. Especially as we're going to Spain for a long weekend to see family. Wondering if I should just let myself off for that?

TragicTess · 12/02/2025 20:42

Hi everyone, really enjoy reading about your victories! Well done for the perseverance.
I am on D10 and feeling like I miss the spontaneity of eating. To make this regime work all food needs to be planned and in the fridge ready to eat/make.

Today was overnight oats for 301 then mushroom & veg biryani with some extra chicken =470 … tomorrow will be Greek yoghurt & berries then sesame salmon with tomato & broccoli.

harriethoyle · 13/02/2025 08:48

@eekwhatnow - 583 is absolutely fab. In terms of the weekend, if you think it's going to be very indulgent put some strategies in place ie last weekend I knew I had a big Saturday night planned, so I skipped breakfast, had soup for lunch and saved my calories for the festivities. Next weekend we have lunch at a friends so I am going to drive to limit booze calories. Just try and be mindful rather than throwing all your progress away. Also do a FD as soon as you can afterwards to undo some of the self-indulgence!

@TragicTess I don’t count count calories on NFDs. I try to be sensible… I don’t want to completely undermine the effort of fast days…. But I think there is something about fasting that is beyond calorie deficit. It seems to help the body function better.

harriethoyle · 13/02/2025 09:58

@TragicTess are you doing 5:2? because there should be enough room for variety on 5 sensible NFD so this doesn't get repetitive or unsustainable...

sweetgingercat · 13/02/2025 11:31

Hi all, back for a fast day today. Anyone else fasting today?

@eekwhatnow B2b does seem challenging at first but after a while you stop feeling hungry by the second day and it becomes a lot easier. There used to be someone here who did 3 fast days in a row and she said on the third day she didn’t even feel like she wanted to eat.

Ahhh no started with the daily 800 cals with DH as he has more to lose. Thought I would do 2 weeks (not the 12 suggested Shock) then move to 5:2

harriethoyle · 13/02/2025 14:06

Ah OK - I see! Well at least you've only got 14 days to go then you can just do two days a week @TragicTess

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 13/02/2025 14:50

FD here - tea and water during the day, then I think either quiche and salad or leftover pasta Bolognese depending on what needs to be eaten.

eekwhatnow · 14/02/2025 10:08

@harriethoyle that's really good advice. So much so I'm having a pre-emptive semi-fast day today! Going to try and stay under 1000 today and see where I can make savings over the weekend. Thanks.

Darker · 16/02/2025 08:34

How is everyone doing? I hope not too derailed by Valentine’s dinner, chocolate and treats.

I feel I’m stuck hovering just above x stone 2 lbs. Need a push…

harriethoyle · 17/02/2025 09:03

Only 0.5kg on this weekend so I'll take that @Darker . Vaguely annoyed, as was supposed to have PT tonight but my trainer just cancelled - would have taken today as a FD if I'd known but I've already had breakfast! Never mind. Will stick with Tues/Thurs and go for my planned cals today (which were only 1100 to be fair). See you tomorrow!

aberjenagain · 17/02/2025 09:51

Morning all! FD here. I am a bitter jaded cynic, so we don’t do Valentine’s Day 😄 so no fancy food/chocs/wine to contend with.

sweetgingercat · 17/02/2025 10:58

Oh bad, I had a heavy weekend, a birthday party, people coming to stay and now it’s half term with more hang outs and people and kids visiting… so today and tomorrow are out. I may fast up until this evening when they arrive. Annoying but hopefully I might be able to fast on Weds and Thurs instead…

TragicTess · 17/02/2025 13:31

Hi all, I am going to stick with the daily 800 for another week, as stepping onto the scales this morning showed I have lost another 3.6lbs so nearly half a stone in 2 weeks.
Finding it much easier than expected (although v.organised & menu planning everything)

harriethoyle · 17/02/2025 15:43

That's great @TragicTess - very motivating!

aberjenagain · 17/02/2025 16:12

Oooh, great that it’s going so well @TragicTess, congrats!

Castlerigg · 17/02/2025 19:00

Hello, I'm skulking back for another go as I've plumped up over Christmas and now need to lose it again.

I can't actually remember what I'm supposed to do though. Is it 500-600 calories on two days, as well as fasting?

Kitchen is closing now on 511. I have plenty of rooibos tea for evening drinks, but I suspect I shall have an early night tonight.

harriethoyle · 17/02/2025 19:35

@Castlerigg don’t despair, I’m still battling the last of my Crimbo flab 🤣 we’ll shed it together!

I aim for 500-600 cals on a FD. I tend to skip breakfast because then you can have a more substantial lunch or tea. If you do back to back days, you have roughly 1300 cals to spread over the two days.

511 an excellent start back!
