Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Well done on your B2B @OohMrDarcy ! I did a protein mini on Thursday, plus a good weights workout, and I was down a pound this morning, which I'm very pleased with.

harriethoyle · 02/12/2024 08:23

Morning all! FD today - we’re away from tomorrow night so there’s nothing in the house for lunch at work so I’m popping to pret to get the lowest calorie option before soup out of the freezer tonight 🤞🏼

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 02/12/2024 08:40

congrats on the SV @TeaRose29

good luck @harriethoyle Sounds like a plan!

I'm checking in for monday weigh in today at 96.1kg meaning a loss of 0.3kg. Not bad given yesterday afternoon / evening was an eating fest doing a little christmas party for my 94 year old nan!

FD today and having a stir fry for dinner so just totting up probable cals so I know what there is left for the rest of the day

harriethoyle · 02/12/2024 19:12

Kitchen closing on 699. I’m just so bloody cold today! Can’t get heat into me. B2b tomorrow but I’m travelling for work in the evening which always makes a FD challenging…

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 02/12/2024 19:17

Well done @harriethoyle - I struggle when travelling for work so try to avoid!

Kitchen closed on 550 Ish today. Happy with that. Out all day for work tomorrow myself so need to attempt to not rely on service station food!

harriethoyle · 03/12/2024 19:33

Bit of a bust with a skinny hot chocolate whilst waiting for the bus. A mini I suspect, I’ll do another tomorrow to try and make up for it…

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 04/12/2024 09:27

at least it was a skinny one @harriethoyle

FD for me today - cottage pie for dinner again, so I'm sticking to tea today - and my advent chocolate will have to wait until tomorrow!

OohMrDarcy · 04/12/2024 20:16

Kitchen closed on 471 today, very happy with that.

We are at the theatre tomorrow evening so will be McDonald's on the way, will plan the day to make that work without going over 🤞🏻

OohMrDarcy · 09/12/2024 09:25

morning all

Monday morning weigh in for me and scales show 95.8kg so another 0.3kg lost. Given the season and the amount of socialised eating I'm doing I'm happy with the slow and steady trickle at the moment, though still pretty desperate to get under 95 by Christmas!

<reminds self its a marathon not a sprint and going in the right direction>

FDs looking like Wednesday and Thursday this week due to more festivities

how is everyone else doing?

OohMrDarcy · 11/12/2024 07:20

Checking in for Wednesday FD. Doing spag bol for the kids for dinner so I'll have a small portion of the Bolognese for my main meal.

Anyone joining me today?

OohMrDarcy · 11/12/2024 19:58

Kitchen closed on around 630.

FD2 tomorrow and have a beef stew planned

OohMrDarcy · 12/12/2024 08:37

Checking in for day 2 of b2b.

Beef and veggies in the slow cooker for later, yum

harriethoyle · 12/12/2024 18:08

Evening @OohMrDarcy you look like you’ve been doing some great FDs in the last few days! I’m back from holiday, feel horribly bloated so I’ve done a FD today - 560 or near enough and it’s been hard work! But had to get it done. Will do an IF tomorrow and not eat until lunch to try and get the holiday weight off asap… then back Mon-tues for a b2b.

OohMrDarcy · 13/12/2024 10:19

welcome back @harriethoyle and good job on an immediate FD!

I closed kitchen around 600 again yesterday which I was happy with. Sneaky scale check this morning is looking ace but official weigh in monday so the challenge is not to ruin it over the weekend!

harriethoyle · 13/12/2024 13:01

I've managed an IF today, held firm until half 12 for lunch. Think I will have a dry evening tonight too as DSD need a 9.30pm pick up so if I volunteer for that I'll avoid the booze calories!

OohMrDarcy · 13/12/2024 13:09

well done! Fab start back

Darker · 15/12/2024 21:17

Hello! Just back on the 5:2 wagon after a loooong time. 1st week went very well. 2nd weekly weigh-in tomorrow…

I think next week will be fine but Christmas week is going to be a mighty challenge.

harriethoyle · 16/12/2024 10:12

Morning @OohMrDarcy @Darker - I'm signing in for day 1 of a B2B. Already absolutely fecking ravenous. It's going to be a long 48 hours...!!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 16/12/2024 12:27

Happy monday all

I've weighed in at 95.6kg this morning which I'm painfully annoyed by. I'm hoping its a digestion timing one today so will weigh again tomorrow as I know I was below 95kg at the end of last week!

NFD today , FD tomorrow

Good luck @harriethoyle - lots of warm drinks if you can, they help me!

welcome @Darker - good luck for tomorrows weigh in!

harriethoyle · 16/12/2024 19:40

Kitchen closing on 516 - gives me some leeway tomorrow!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 17/12/2024 08:19

morning all

well done @harriethoyle - good luck today!

FD here and I'm going for nothing but water / tea for as long as possible. I've got soup tonight planned too

harriethoyle · 17/12/2024 10:12

Morning @OohMrDarcy - I'm joining you with soup for tea. Thai butternut squash which I made a couple of months ago and had forgotten how much I like! Am already hangry. Today may be a long day 😂

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 17/12/2024 12:50

that sounds delicious @harriethoyle

I've just had first coffee and some chicken to keep me going

OohMrDarcy · 18/12/2024 06:03

Kitchen closed at around 480 yesterday. Happy with that. Next FD is Thursday
