Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

I’m slenderer @OohMrDarcy and pleasingly am having to return a Black Friday size 12 dress because it’s too big! So a definite NSV… good luck today and with DD’s appointment 🤞🏼

CrabPuff · 19/11/2024 11:40

I am practically 90s style heroin chic this morning. Well. 14st 7 on the nose - which is better than yesterday’s outrage.

Love the NSV of returning a size12!

harriethoyle · 19/11/2024 17:47

Pipe down Kate Moss aka @CrabPuff 🤣🤣

kitchen closing here on 621 which makes an exact 1450 for my b2b. Happy enough although it’s slightly over.

Fabulous nsv there @harriethoyle rather jealous!

The heroin choc suits you @CrabPuff

harriethoyle · 20/11/2024 08:39

1kg of holiday weight off and one more fd to go tomorrow. I’ll take that. My breakfast porridge was lush!

OohMrDarcy · 20/11/2024 10:27

OohMrDarcy · 21/11/2024 08:30

Checking in for a Thursday FD here

Have cottage pie for dinner so will allow myself a small portion of that. Going to let myself have up to 600 cals I think today as its so cold, know I'm going to need lots of tea to keep me going!

anyone joining me?

harriethoyle · 21/11/2024 10:24

Same @OohMrDarcy - it's minus 4 here so I think I am really going to struggle. Tuna for lunch and fishcake for tea. Brrrrr!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 21/11/2024 12:50

Been having a rotten time. Exactly 4 weeks ago, at about 7pm on the Friday evening, I realised that I had cystitis. GP obviously closed, so my husband took me straight to an emergency NHS centre. Eventually got seen and got home at about 10.30 with the much-needed antibiotics. The next morning the cystitis felt better, but I could feel a cold coming on, as could my husband. Long story short, for the last 4 weeks I've had the worst bug I've had in decades, I've just felt SO ILL (don't think it was Covid - husband did a test and was negative). I'm just about feeling like myself again (although still coughing) and I've got a bit more energy. I've basically done almost nothing for the last month. I haven't gained any weight, but nor have I dropped the extra pounds I put on while on holiday in October, so am currently 10.4. And now it's the Christmas season!

I've got 3 nights out next week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday) so I need a strategy. Think I might do protein-based minis on Sunday, Monday and Thursday. Don't feel up to a proper FD yet!

harriethoyle · 23/11/2024 08:35

Sorry to hear that @TeaRose29 - I’m in what feels like week 27 of a really miserable head cold so I wonder if there’s a bug going round… take it easy until you’re properly better!

TeaRose29 · 24/11/2024 14:28

Thank you @harriethoyle , sorry to hear you’ve also been suffering 💐.

Decided to do a FD today. Not doing anything special and I am DESPERATE.

harriethoyle · 24/11/2024 14:47

@TeaRose29 DH has now got the lurgy. Of course, his lurgy is much worse than mine. I’m lucky he’s not wearing the dressing gown of doom 🤣🙈

Morning all

Weighed in after a RUBBISH eating weekend with 96.4kg so a loss of 0.2kg - considering the dominos and italian out I'm happy with that, was definitely expecting a gain!

Need to do a b2b later in the week this week as I'm out for a curry tonight (ace start) then a couple of days out and about with work (including a supplier lunch) so probably Thursday / Friday B2B I think.

@TeaRose29 - sorry you've been so ill, lots of mega bugs doing the rounds!

harriethoyle · 25/11/2024 10:11

Morning all, I'm fasting today after a pretty disastrous weekend scales wise! M, W and Th this week for me, we go away next week so I will only be able to fit two FD in M/Tu and then all bets are off...

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 25/11/2024 11:06

@OohMrDarcy I think you are absolutely right, definitely a mega bug! Sorry to hear that your DH has got it now, @harriethoyle , and obviously a much worse version!
I managed a sort of FD yesterday. No idea of the calories, but I didn't eat anything until dinner time, then just had some leftovers. Anyway, it worked and I'm a couple of pounds down today. I'm with you today, Harriet, for a B2B, but I think it will be a protein-based mini.

harriethoyle · 25/11/2024 21:41

Kitchen closed on 598 and torturing myself watching masterchef professionals 🤣

Checking in for a Thursday FD here after a busy week of eating. Got a beef stew in the slow cooker so that is dinner and I'll probably just have lots of tea and coffee other than that to give my stomach a break!

Anyone with me?

harriethoyle · 28/11/2024 10:19

Completed a FD yesterday and skipping today's FD as meeting a friend for lunch but 2FD not too bad for this chilly time of year! Back on Monday...

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 28/11/2024 19:29

Kitchen closed just shy of 500 today so super happy. The beef stew was amazing too, loving my winter warmer meals at the moment and they work well for FD too.

Got to b2b tomorrow, and spag bol is on the menu so will just have the Bolognese I think

harriethoyle · 28/11/2024 19:36

Well done @OohMrDarcy im out for leaving drinks and my first Christmas party tomorrow so I’m ying to your yang 🤣

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 29/11/2024 07:22

Morning all

Checking in for my Friday FD. Food roughly planned for the day with the extra b2b allowance if needed.

Enjoy the party @harriethoyle !

OohMrDarcy · 29/11/2024 22:17

Kitchen closed on 665 plus a small lick of DDs ice cream after a trip to IKEA. Very proud of myself for not falling for meatballs (had dinner first) or other snacks!
