Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Kitchen closed yesterday on 558 and this morning’s weigh in showed the holiday weight off. Just in time to put it back on over Christmas! 🤣

Weetabix and marmite for breakfast this morning and intermittent fasting Thursday and Friday to try and limit the damage.

huzzah for the holiday weight being gone @harriethoyle !

FD today and have a sirloin steak and green beans planned for dinner tonight so will be mostly sticking to the water / tea other than that 😇

Darker · 19/12/2024 08:50

Getting into the swing here…. Was well rewarded for the first two weigh-ins so feel motivated to push through the hungry moments. But actually it’s not been bad so long as I keep busy.

OohMrDarcy · 19/12/2024 10:15

well done @Darker

OohMrDarcy · 20/12/2024 08:29

Kitchen closed bang on 500 yesterday and the scales are looking fantastic this morning. I might move official weigh in day back to just after 2nd FD to stop it depressing me.... if I were to do that official weigh in today is 94kg which gives me 1.6kg lost since monday lol - see why I'm thinking about it!

harriethoyle · 20/12/2024 11:57

Definitely do that @OohMrDarcy !!

I'm currently feeling grumbly about yesterday's enforced work christmas meal was both expensive and high calorie - would it be churlish to book the day off next year?!

OP posts:
Darker · 20/12/2024 12:48

So nearly caved this morning… forgot for a minute that I was planning a FD. But managed to rein it back before any damage done. Now cooking ready for the Christmas guest arrivals… staving off temptation with black coffee.

OohMrDarcy · 20/12/2024 12:51

well if I'm doing that I have some little victories too then @harriethoyle

BMI is now below 35 ( 34.9) ... my BMI was 45.4 when I restarted IF the summer about 15 months ago and 42 in February when I restarted 5:2.. so it has dropped by almost 10 points and a total loss of 28.2kg or 4st 6lb!!!

Also had two LOVELY compliments in the office this week

definitely motivates to carry on!

If you have to pay for the do @harriethoyle - then you don't have to go! I would have no issues with you not going next year if you don't want to!

OohMrDarcy · 23/12/2024 07:47

Morning all

Checking in for a final pre Christmas fast day. Next one will be at the weekend I suspect.

I bought some extra of the cheap veg yesterday so I'm planning on making a vat of vegetable soup today and I'll have a portion of that for my dinner... Looking forward to it already!

Anyone joining me today?

Katypp · 23/12/2024 08:26

Final fast day for me today too. Next one planned for Friday but we'll see ...

Katypp · 23/12/2024 08:28

Banana pancakes for breakfast, veg soup for lunch and steamed salmon parcel thing for dinner.

OohMrDarcy · 23/12/2024 09:50

good luck @Katypp

OohMrDarcy · 23/12/2024 20:25

Kitchen closed on 507

Let Christmas begin 🎄

OohMrDarcy · 28/12/2024 07:43

Checking in for a festive FD today. Have a Christmas meetup with family on Monday and a fair bit of cheese in the fridge but other than that the festivities are pretty much done here.

Making another batch of soup today, this one with a bit of a kick so that will be my dinner.

Scales showing the expected increase from a diet of cheese and baileys for a few days but will soon be off again. I've not gone too crazy.

harriethoyle · 28/12/2024 07:49

Merry Christmas @OohMrDarcy hope you had a fab time 😊 we’re still working through turkey and dessert mountain 🤣🙈 might try a FD tomorrow and will definitely fast 2nd and 3rd Jan…

Kitchen closing on 507 plus a shortbread biscuit today. Not perfect but bloody good I think considering it's still the festive period!

Just plotting tomorrows meals and dinner planning for the week ready for the food shop in the morning.

Hope everyone had a lovely or at least peaceful Christmas!

OohMrDarcy · 02/01/2025 07:40

Morning all

Checking in for first FD of the year today. Yesterday went for a nice long walk for a couple of hours, lovely start to the year.

Not feeling 100% so going to have one of my portions of soup tonight to soothe my throat and get a ton of veggies in.

Anyone joining me?

OohMrDarcy · 02/01/2025 22:28

Kitchen closed on 573 plus a couple of strepsils, happy with that.

Daisy155 · 05/01/2025 00:26

Doing 75 days challenge fasting until dinner time. I gained 5 kg since summer really gutted

CrabPuff · 06/01/2025 09:26

Just slinking fatly back on. FD today - not sure if b2B yet. Have spin class anyway which might make me insanely hungry.

OohMrDarcy · 06/01/2025 09:28

ooh lovely to see peeps returning! Welcome back @Daisy155 and @CrabPuff !

NFD for me today - its my youngest's birthday so can't fast on a cake day! Tuesday and Thursday currently in the plan for me

Darker · 06/01/2025 10:07

Doing better than expected… Christmas plus a cold has made it difficult to fast (last fast day was 21st!) but I’ve only put 1 lb on. This is nothing short of a miracle. Today is first fast day of 2025.

OohMrDarcy · 06/01/2025 10:42

congrats @Darker !

lastditchattempt50 · 06/01/2025 14:48

can I join please? I did 5:2 successfully many years ago when BigChocFrenzy was on the threads (I recognise some familiar names, I have namechanged since I was last fasting) - needless to say with turning 50 and the onset of perimenopause, a very stressful job and home life (plus many other excuses I could list 😂) I am now heavier than I have been for a long while.

I know 5:2 works if I stick at it. To be honest, I think if I had surplus cash I would try ozempic as have seen lots of friends lose so much weight very quickly on it, but alas I am skint!

I am starting wed and planning first FD for thurs - wish me luck.....

CrabPuff · 06/01/2025 21:24

Ok. Kitchen closed on 525. I forewent the hot choc planned in case I was so hungry tomorrow I couldn’t do it. But I think I potentially can.

We’ll see. I stopped drinking water at 7.30pm as I SO want a good night’s sleep and not to have to pee at 4am.

thank you for the welcome back OohMrDarcy!
