Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Much colder today!!

Just wanted to share a little mini-win - needed to pop into town this morning and had intended to get myself a coffee and pasty from greggs once I'd finished my list. Joined the queue of about 10 people and then talked myself out of it altogether. Passed another one on my way back to the car and it was closed. Almost diverted to a 3rd but stopped myself and grumbled all the way back up the steep hill to the car with the buggy Smile

Good luck Wednesday fasters. I'm going to fast tomorrow and maybe a mini on Friday.

CrabPuff · 13/11/2024 15:14

Checking in - I got asked round to a friend’s for dinner and so said I’d just go for a drink and take my diet drink and rush home to my ready meal - but actually she said to take it - I am home alone this evening (hence it being a good day to fast) but actually fine to socialise if they don’t mind me microwaving a waitrose biryani.

It will be tricky to stay off the G&Ts but one way or another hopefully I’ll manage it.

I was 14st 7.8 this morning and 2lbs less than last week but obviously I did have a low of 14st 3 before I got out of the way of it. At LEAST can I be under 14 for Christmas damnit.

I might try a mini tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 13/11/2024 19:41

Fabulous @Bottl 😀

kitchen closed on an ominous 666 🤣🙈

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 13/11/2024 22:46

Kitchen closed on 670. I watched everyone else at the table guzzle lamb and tiramisu and wine and I stuck to my apple tango (in a wine glass) and conversed through gritted teeth.

great willpower Bottl! And 666 also vg Harriethoyle.

looking forward to a really solid breakfast tomorrow!

Bottl · 14/11/2024 05:40

Wow, @CrabPuff - that must have taken a lot of strength to stick to your plan. Under 14 st by Christmas sounds achievable.

Great numbers @harriethoyle Grin

Second morning in a row I've woken at 5.30 after a night of anxiety dreams. Going to attempt a FD.

Does anyone prep their FD food the day before? Once I start work at 7.30, there's very little time to make anything for lunch so I end up buying something on the run. My life feels so much more chaotic since I last tried 5:2.

OohMrDarcy · 14/11/2024 07:26

Morning all

Fabulous to see everyone back at it and achieving great things already!

Thursday FD for me today. Have a chicken casserole for dinner and will stick to tea and coffee other than that (including one of my latte sachets as have the cals). I actually found that easier than eating lunch the last time.

If we are talking Christmas goals. I'd like to be under 95kg. Not a massive goal and not unrealistic at all but I've been stuck just above it since the summer so I'd really like to nail it down.

CrabPuff · 14/11/2024 09:53

Good luck today’s fasters!

Bottl - I use low calorie ready meals to avoid too much mental calorie working out. I like 5:2 because I’m not dieting 5 days a week, in glorious comparison to previous weight loss attempts where I would be calorie counting daily and trying various iterations on MyFitnessPal for ages to work out how to fit wine in (helpful).

So now I just do the B2B and have a fish pie or curry or laksa (Waitrose or Cook) as I much prefer hot food for lunch and evening meal plus a small hot chocolate (drinking chocolate and skimmed milk). Then I don’t have to think about it and that horrible obsessive mentality can’t get a grip!

For a separate 500 calorie day, I have 2 boiled eggs or chunky soup for lunch and a ready meal plus hot choc .Microwave or oven needed obviously.

Annoyingly I woke with a cracking headache which I think is fast induced as I’m slightly out of practice with it but hopefully that’s the last of it as I’m back on it. Planning Monday and Tuesday next week as a B2B.

harriethoyle · 14/11/2024 10:56

Yes @Bottl I prep in advance but tend to stick to things like fishcakes, and low cal ready meals, there's a good aldi spinach canneloni and I just make sure I have loads of veg in to bulk out. I make my pre planned packed lunch the night before if it's cous cous or that morning if it's a tuna thin.

Not a fecking ounce off overnight which is massively irritating! Of course I ate 4 mini pastries at my course this morning so that'll definitely help 🙄self sabotage is strong here!!

Bottl · 14/11/2024 18:23

Thanks for sharing your meal tips.

I'll make a better meal plan over the weekend to allow for 2 FDs.

Do you all eat with others in your household on FDs? I have an adult DS at home and mostly eat with him in the evenings so try to have something we can both eat but maybe I need to change that until I can get to grips with fasting again.

Today didn't start well when my friend turned up to toddler group with a freshly baked Victoria sponge at 9 o'clock this morning. I managed to resist until 10.30 then had a small piece. I'd packed a cheese and salad pitta for lunch and planning a small JP with tuna for dinner. I have managed to resist the 3 remaining Bourbon biscuits left from the after school snacks.

OohMrDarcy · 14/11/2024 19:11

Evening all

Kitchen closed on 506 just my nighttime tea to go

@Bottl - I do a mix. I have two teens at home, try to do one FD when they are out or at their dad's to give me flexibility, and the other I do a family meal but don't have the carbs... Eg tonight I did a chicken casserole and they had cheesy mash with theirs

CrabPuff · 17/11/2024 16:50

I am checking in towards the tail end of day 1 of a B2B - I realised I had a day to myself mostly and actually a friend wants to drop in on Tuesday so it made sense to do today and tomorrow. I have contemplated ditching it a couple of times but so far so good.

no ready meals in so will acquire what I need tomorrow and have gone with fish today and an omelette.

CrabPuff · 17/11/2024 21:36

Kitchen closed on 638 - not too hard going today and hopefully tomorrow is busy enough to be a success. Glad I’ve done it but will be even happier in 24 hours time!

harriethoyle · 18/11/2024 07:31

Well done @CrabPuff - I’m joining you today for day one of a b2b, cous cous and a fishcake with broccoli.

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 18/11/2024 08:33

Thanks harriet - I might pick up some broccoli later.
i’ve just weighed myself (pre even my morning coffee) and I am either 14 9 or 14 11 depending where I stand which is 2-4lb gain! Charming.

It won’t be helped by diving into a bacon sandwich so I will continue crossly with my day 2 but HONESTLY. I did eat quite a lot of sweet things at the weekend when I don’t usually have a sweet tooth so am hoping it’s water weight. 🙄

OohMrDarcy · 18/11/2024 09:29

Morning all

Monday Weigh in day. The scales have me at 96.6 which is a loss of 1.2kg and very nearly back where I was a month ago lol

well done @harriethoyle and @CrabPuff on the FDs!

Tuesday next FD for me

Bottl · 18/11/2024 09:42

Well done on the Sunday FD, @CrabPuff - frustrating result on the scales. I had similar last week so haven't checked since.

I'm also joining the Monday fasters. I have some leftover roasted veg from last night's dinner and hoping that'll keep me going until this evening.

harriethoyle · 18/11/2024 10:02

I’m only 3 hours into mine @OohMrDarcy but thanks 🤣

Forgot to mention my weekend discovery - tanquery 0% gin. It’s SO convincing! I was very impressed and will use it on nights I fancy a gin to try and cut down on the booze, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 18/11/2024 10:02

Ps fuck the scales @CrabPuff they are not our friends 🤣

Ps fuck the scales @CrabPuff they are not our friends 🤣

🤣

CrabPuff · 18/11/2024 13:01

Yeah! Fuck the scales! what do they know anyway. (They’d better have sorted themselves tomorrow - I was up about three times going to pee anyway so perhaps my sugar/water retention theory doesn’t hold. Hmm.)

I’m having a Very Hungry day indeed - have said “you can have it tomorrow” to myself a LOT in the supermarket. And didn’t dare buy anything outside of today’s food either because I wouldn’t have it tomorrow, I’d have it immediately.

the Tanqueray 0% sounds good. So hard to find a soft drink that isn’t sweet. Tomato juice is a bit much!

harriethoyle · 18/11/2024 19:40

Kitchen closing on 821 because bloody Aldi have redesigned their cannelloni and it’s now 420 cals 🙄 should have stuck to my originally planned fishcake!

tuna thin and fishcake tomorrow

OP posts:
Bottl · 18/11/2024 20:20

Oh, that's annoying, @harriethoyle - hope they didn't alter the flavour aswell!!

Well done for resisting temptation at the supermarket @CrabPuff. I've also been to the supermarket and managed to stick to my list which is very unusual for me - I clearly wasn't hungry enough to deviate 😆

I had cawl for lunch and beef casserole for dinner which was just a slightly thicker version of lunch 🤣

Aiming for a mini-FD tomorrow

CrabPuff · 18/11/2024 21:56

Kitchen closed on 651 and I cannot get to bed fast enough!

well done fellow fasters - I’ve remembered that fasting when it’s cold and wet is more effort for me than in the summer. Soup is all very well but I prefer real food.

HATE when calories get changed. So few people want them to go up after all.

I am fully anticipating being 7st 2 tomorrow, or I’ll know the reason why.

harriethoyle · 19/11/2024 08:03

Are you thin @CrabPuff ?! I’m on day 2 of a b2b but snowed in.., I HATE fasting when wfh!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 19/11/2024 08:38

Morning all

Hope @harriethoyle and @CrabPuff are suitably slender today

Checking in for Tuesday FD here. Got oxtail soup planned for tonight and another reasonably stressful day with an important appointment for my DD so will keep it simple the rest of the day
