Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

I am so lapsed as well. Can't get my head in the game. Feel depressed generally at the moment about general life stuff and just can't quite do fasting too. Even when I have good intentions I forget or don't stick to it.

As a result I still have at least a stone to go. Would love to shift it by Xmas.

berryhand · 04/11/2024 12:55

Totally feel you @AnnieLewis it is a real slog atm. Hoping we can spur each other on a bit

OohMrDarcy · 05/11/2024 07:22

Checking in for my FD!

just totting up cals for my stir fry so I know what I have available for the rest of the day whilst drinking a glass of water 😇

seaduck · 05/11/2024 18:33

Yeah had a week off fasting over half term and am also 50% sweets from Halloween. Haven't weighed to see the damage, too scary. Was hoping to be under 100kg before Christmas but 102.7kg last time (plus whatever the half term damage now... 😏) but it's going down so so slowly so doubt I'll get there. But still nearly 10kg off over the last 6 months which is worth focusing on. Slowly slowly.
Doing a FD here - had one dough ball so far, got a ready meal lined up for tea so should be 600ish. Going to gym tomorrow after a break too.

OohMrDarcy · 05/11/2024 20:07

Kitchen closed on 587 which given the day I've had I am really pleased and proud of.

How has your day been @seaduck ? Just keep going, it's the long term trend that actually matters

OohMrDarcy · 07/11/2024 09:46

morning all

Checking in for a Thursday FD today. I have a pot of left over bolognaise for lunch (spag bol last night - yum) and a chicken casserole for dinner

anyone joining me?

OohMrDarcy · 07/11/2024 19:59

Kitchen closed on 580. Would have been sub 500 except for an emergency skinny latte whilst freezing out walking

Really pleased with my fasting week, just need to make sure I don't undo it all at the weekend!

CrabPuff · 07/11/2024 20:04

I have done a fast day today - meant to check in but forgot and I don’t know when the next will be - maybe Sunday? 😬

kitchen closed on 480 and I’ll be going to bed at 9! Going to try to catch up on posts tomorrow.

OohMrDarcy · 07/11/2024 22:17

Ace job @CrabPuff !

Bottl · 10/11/2024 17:44

Hi everyone!
I need an almighty boot up my almighty backside!
Tomorrow is going to be a FD. Just made a pot of soup so will have that for lunch and maybe for dinner too.
No idea what my weight is - too scared to get on the scales but will think about weighing after a few good FDs.

OohMrDarcy · 11/11/2024 07:20

Morning @Bottl - good luck! You may want to step on the scale just for scientific reasons, so you can see some progress quickly!

Monday weigh day for me after a week back on it. Weighed in at 97.8 giving me a loss of 0.7kg 🙂 happy with that especially as there was also a dinner out!

FD today for me and I have a leftover roast dinner from yesterday's mega one. Sticking to tea and coffee other than that as gave myself an extra potato which I don't normally do on a FD roast.

Bottl · 11/11/2024 08:25

Thank you and yes, I probably should weigh but I'm dreading what the numbers will be and was hoping that feeling better would be reward enough.

Good luck with your FD - a roast dinner sounds awesome!

OohMrDarcy · 11/11/2024 09:49

you do what works for you @Bottl
For me - I would want to see the progress straight away which I wouldn't see without seeing the starting number - but everyone is different!

I'm looking forward to my roast already lol - will probably have it a bit earlier as its one meal today

harriethoyle · 11/11/2024 10:23

Morning all! Back from hols and 2.9kg put on so am FD today and Wednesday to try and get a chunk of that off... Keep me strong @OohMrDarcy !!

berryhand · 11/11/2024 10:27

Morning all. Planning a b2b today and tomorrow if poss. I had toast this morning but I've got sinusitis and can hardly taste anything so feels like an opportune day to fast from this point!

harriethoyle · 11/11/2024 13:33

I've had cold after cold @berryhand - finally got rid of an epic 6 week-er on holiday but now have the beginning of another one 😓SO irritating!

OP posts:
Bottl · 11/11/2024 17:35

I can sympathise with all the lurgies. I look after small children and have been continually covered in their snot for weeks!!

How's everyone getting on today? I kinda stumbled at the first hurdle and had a ham salad baguette at lunchtime but I think I'm better off doing that, having something small for my dinner and then putting myself to bed early.

Not sure whether to aim for a b2b and fast tomorrow or wait until Wednesday.

To those that do b2b, do you find that easier than 2 non consecutive FDs?

harriethoyle · 11/11/2024 17:45

Yes @Bottl because I find the extra 150 cals per day can make a huge difference. Also means they’re out the way quicker! 🤣

harriethoyle · 11/11/2024 19:07

Kitchen closing on 619. Happy with that for the first one back! I’ll be back on Wednesday…

CrabPuff · 11/11/2024 19:15

Ok. I’m in for a B2B tomorrow and Wednesday.

I have some fish pies to defrost and lots of diet fizzy drinks to destroy my gut flora and fill me up!

this is the week I get back in the game. Hard!

Well done hh, berryhand and OohMrD - got to make this pre Christmas bit count. Not long now.

OohMrDarcy · 11/11/2024 19:23

Kitchen closed on 513 today. Did fine with a couple of coffees, loads of water and my roast. Going to make a nighttime tea shortly. .
Next FD Thursday here.

Well done all! Lovely to see us all getting back on track!

harriethoyle · 12/11/2024 08:17

0.6 of a kg off overnight and I feel SO much better for yesterday’s fast day. Back tomorrow for FD2 and hopefully a bit more shaved off…

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 12/11/2024 13:52

I am peckish and waiting impatiently for my fish pie but so grateful for the extra calories the B2B brings.

not much else to report - next week looks good in terms of fitting it in, so hopefully not much will change.

Looking forward to the after-fast-feeling anyway!

CrabPuff · 12/11/2024 22:27

Kitchen closed on 624. More of the same tomorrow and then the week is back to normal. Lovely!

harriethoyle · 13/11/2024 08:27

Signing in for day 2 of the week. I am already starving and it’s fecking freezing! Today is going to be hard… 🤣🙈
