Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Morning,

I'm aiming for my 1st 36 hour food fast. Had a cuppa and some digestives about 9pm last night, so hoping to go through to 9am on Tuesday.

With it being my first attempt - its just going to be food, so will still have hot drinks with a dash of milk and maybe a glass of juice if i need a sweet boost (and water of course)

I'll probably get into bed early tonight to get through it all as fast as possible, but 12 hours in and I'm feeling pretty optimistic.

Any tips for a longer fast?

harriethoyle · 14/10/2024 12:32

I don't do "no eating" fasts @MangoLove I always eat at least my 500 calories and frequently more(!) on a FD. But things like miso soup etc give a really good low calorie bang for your buck if you need a quick hit.

626 for day one of my b2b. See you all tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 15/10/2024 10:03

Forgot to sign in this morning but I am here and I am fecking STARVING! Roll on lunchtime...!

OP posts:
MangoLove · 15/10/2024 10:41

I did it and I'm here to tell the tale

36hr no food - but lots of water, 2 coffees and 2 teas (prob a fair few calories)

Definitely mind over matter, had a slice of toast this morning and will hold out till Lunch, have dinner and try it again.

harriethoyle · 16/10/2024 08:16

Morning all. 0.7kg off after my b2b. Very indulgent breakfast this morning because I was up at the crack of dawn to get Mr Hoyle to an 8am flight so I basically feel like its lunchtime 😂 normal FD sandwich for lunch (although it's NFD) and lasagne from the freezer (clearing it out before Christmas) for tea. A fairly hum drum day. Back tomorrow for my third FD to see if I can inch ever closer to breaking that elusive 70kg barrier...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 17/10/2024 08:45

Morning fellow fasters,

Signing in for 3rd FD of the week but likely to be over 500 target - Mr Hoyle's flight was cancelled yesterday so we had to do the early start again and so I've had a mini breakfast sandwich (101 cals) because I've already been up for 3 hours! But planned lunch and tea brings me in at 602 so if I manage that I'll be happy enough...

Anyone with me?

OP posts:
seaduck · 17/10/2024 17:18

Wow 0.7kg is great @harriethoyle!
I'm joining you today, not sure what to have for tea yet but currently on 0 cals for the day so I've got 600 to play with...

harriethoyle · 17/10/2024 17:51

I’ve been SO HUNGRY today @seaduck 🤣🙈 just waiting for my fish to cook and I’ll end the day on 691 after an emergency snack 😬 cannot wait for tomorrow!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 18/10/2024 09:06

Finally broke the 70kg barrier. 69.9kg this morning! 🤣🤣🤣 I won’t even maintain that this weekend but I’m going to use it as motivation to try and be relatively virtuous so I’ve not got too much damage to undo on Monday…

OP posts:
seaduck · 18/10/2024 16:52

Ah such a milestone @harriethoyle . Well done 👍 . Lost 0.2kg again this week, to take off the 0.2kg I put on last week. Feeling a bit on the plateau but will keep going!

harriethoyle · 21/10/2024 08:07

Morning all, as predicted I didn’t maintain my scale breakthrough over the weekend 🤣 back on it today with a b2b - ham sandwich for lunch and butternut squash soup for tea.

anyone with me?

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 21/10/2024 19:36

Kitchen closed on 508. Back tomorrow for day two…

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 22/10/2024 18:49

Forgot to sign in this morning but coming in at 636 which gives me 1144 for the b2b which I’m thrilled with!

anyone fasting with me today?

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 23/10/2024 11:03

Day 1 of a B2B today - I’m with you harriethoyle!

I hope I can just keep on this consistently til Christmas - so choppy the last few weeks. Not too hungry at the moment so that’s good.

harriethoyle · 23/10/2024 15:23

Consistency or lack thereof is my downfall @CrabPuff

And off with the kids next week for HT so that'll be a week off fasting. Going to IF whilst we're away and hope that damage limits...

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 23/10/2024 21:53

If you made it under the holy grail of 70kg, those random minis chucked in have been worth it HH!

kitchen closed on 643 - tomorrow is a chicken laksa and a thing of soup. And probably the small hot chocolate which makes it bearable in the evenings. I need to be more productive on fast day evenings - no cooking makes it drag a bit. I could probably do an omelette but it hardly seems worth the use of the pan.

Anyway - glad to be back on it and jeans not too tight and will be ever looser OR ELSE!

harriethoyle · 23/10/2024 22:34

Well I did @CrabPuff but I only maintained it for 36 hours 🤣🙈

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 24/10/2024 12:59

Just checking in for day 2 - bit hungrier today and cold but going to add some chilli flakes to soup and hold out til 2.30pm I think before I have it.

harriethoyle · 24/10/2024 20:36

Hope you managed ok @CrabPuff and delicious Friday food beckons!

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 24/10/2024 22:44

thanks harriet, all done - 631 and PRETTY HUNGRY.

But as ever, so worth it at this moment and in the morning - I see a bacon sandwich in my future!
I’m going to weigh in tomorrow and bite the bullet and if I’m back to square 1 at least I’m not more than when I started.

seaduck · 25/10/2024 09:40

0.1kg loss - feeling a bit fed up been around the same 0.1kg range for about 3 weeks, time to be a bit stricter on the non days days I think.

harriethoyle · 25/10/2024 10:27

Same @seaduck - back to my usual plateau at the end of this week and half term hols will not help that.

I have to say though having cut snacking out for four weeks (and I LOVE me a weekend snack with a film or with wine or whatever) it made me feel so much sleeker, if that makes sense? Depressing but true. Also choosing to be the designated driver has helped too. CURSES! It's very boring 😂

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 04/11/2024 08:58

morning all

looks like its not just me that disappeared for a while! I was ill for a week and then chose to take half term off with the kids so not fasted for a few weeks now.

Back on it from today. Currently weighing in at 98.5kg which is at least 50% Halloween sweets!
First FD of the week is tomorrow - DD has an exam resit and then I have a funeral so will be too stressed to eat much anyway.

Have a left over roast for dinner tonight and a stir fry planned for tomorrow - yum

berryhand · 04/11/2024 12:11

Glad I am not the only lapsed faster @OohMrDarcy. Sorry you are having a stressful time.

I have been terrible with (no) discipline recently. Even where I've managed two fast days a week I've overeaten the rest of the time. As a result I still have 13lb to lose as of today to be at initial target weight despite being a mere two lbs off it a few months ago. Infuriating.

Planning to be very diligent between now and Christmas. Also have a holiday in Feb so want to be feeling halfway decent before then.

How is everyone else doing?
