Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Not fasting today as have a blood donation appt this morning. Have managed a mini fast/OMAD the last two days but still feeling too heavy. Am eating too much sugar for sure - need to get a handle on that!
Good luck anyone fasting today x

MonkeyTennis34 · 09/10/2024 08:36

Had a terrible day yesterday re food and ate far too much sugary stuff...

Since menopause, I've developed a madly sweet tooth which I never had before.

Having yoghurt and fruit for breakfast...aiming for a healthier NFD today.

harriethoyle · 09/10/2024 08:40

A kg off overnight which was a really nice whoosh. Splitting a (very generous) portion of home made lasagne last night with DH and bulking it out with veg so am feeling virtuous in anticipation 🤣

OP posts:
Castlerigg · 09/10/2024 09:09

Did not lose a stone overnight as I'd hoped, so am going ahead with the planned FD today.

OohMrDarcy · 10/10/2024 09:05

Morning all

Thursday FD here, anyone joining me?

Got mince and veggies for my dinner (basically cottage pie without the mash - can't wait

Feeling like this has been a good week so my fingers are crossed for that magic stone loss on Monday 😂 (or just any loss tbh lol)

MangoLove · 10/10/2024 11:33

Good morning.

Better late than never - I'd love to join!

I'm generally quite good with fasting 16 - 18 hours most days, but looking through the thread, I think I need to take my calorie counting a little more seriously. Most of my fast days end up being OMAD - but with healthy snacks

This is definitely a lifestyle change that I'd like ti implement - but also want to look & feel amazing come Dec 1st.

SW 01/09 - 89.1kg
CW 10/10 - 87.4kg
Somewhere between these 2 dates i did weigh in at 85.9

Goals
✅Take calorie counting more seriously
✅Try a 36 hr fast

Thanks for letting me into this corner of MN

harriethoyle · 10/10/2024 11:53

Morning @OohMrDarcy I'm with you - 3FD of the week, tuna thin for lunch and a new Aldi slimwell ready meal to try for dinner. I know it's UPF but DH is away and I can't be bothered to cook for myself 😂Will report back for those who are similarly slovenly.

@MangoLove get yourself a tracker along the lines of my fitness pal. Will make it a lot easier to keep count of your healthy snack calories!

Kitchen closed on 580 including an ahem essential small Costa skinny latte on my walk earlier

It was freezing so I'll take it!

seaduck · 10/10/2024 19:58

@CrabPuff for some reason I accidentally added this tag and it won't let me delete it, so apologies CrabPuff 😂
On second day of fast today - did a back to back for first time, forced by my week schedule but not actually found it too bad at all, think it might be easier once your in the mindset of fasting to just keep going. Having said that I'm very much looking forward to breakfast! Also weigh day in the morning, also hoping for this stone loss but suspect it will be 0.2kg as it is every week!

harriethoyle · 10/10/2024 20:13

Official calories 532 BUT a colleague bought too much sushi at lunch and I had a few pieces 😬 stuck to prawn and cucumber but suspect it added at least 250. I’ll guesstimate 800 and thank the lord I skipped breakfast so at least I got a decent IF in 🤣

harriethoyle · 10/10/2024 20:14

Ps would not recommend aldi slimwell Korean noodles. Very wet and unsatisfying. Going to stick to fishcakes and cannelloni going forward…

Had a nice non scale victory of having to swap to one of my partner's belt because mine was too big by quite a way and my jeans won't stay up without one 😊

CrabPuff · 10/10/2024 20:41

i’m checking in for a FD tomorrow for accountability. My jeans were pretty tight this morning. That bloody 2 weeks off! Never again and actually I have a really full week next week and not entirely sure where to squeeze the days in! I’m too scared to weigh anyway which is never a good sign.

happy to be pointlessly tagged Seaduck - I don’t think I get notifications (I’m not on the app so that might be why!) so I only see things when I check in.

tomorrow will be a seabass fillet in the soy ginger sauce (189 I think) and a lot of spinach then probably a tin of Cullen Skink. The best tinned soup ever.

Will report back on how hungry I am tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 10/10/2024 21:22

You’ve got this @CrabPuff !!! Quick on, quick off with any weight gained. Much the best way!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 11/10/2024 08:57

Fewmin’!!! 1/3 kg ON overnight after a FD 🤣🙈 I’ll have to be virtuous over the weekend to try and minimise any damage. Bloody HELL!

TeaRose29 · 11/10/2024 09:37

Back from holiday on Wednesday night after journey from hell. Had put on 3lb Blush. Actually amazed it was so little, as was eating far more than usual and had wine every day including at lunchtime. (It was a cruise and we did walk a lot). Did a mini yesterday and have dropped 2lb! Very pleased with that. Planning another one today. Will be eating mainly lean protein. Agree with @harriethoyle - fast on, fast off.

Anyone joining me today? I know it’s Friday 🤣.

CrabPuff · 11/10/2024 17:22

Wow - Harriet, that is so unfair! FFS!

I am not doing too badly - deviated rather - again by falling into some reduced pineapple. I think it’s nipping into a supermarket when thirsty. Anyway - so no seabass and spinach, I’ll just have the glorious chunky creamy salty soup and a very small hot chocolate and enjoy a croissant tomorrow.

I’m very greedy and have made a rule that I can’t bake (the ones from frozen) 2 at once. I can have 2 if I want but I need to finish the first and see if I CBA to wait 20 mins for another. I’ve never had a second croissant now for months. So basic. If I made 2 I would ABSOLUTELY have 2.

My next thing to crack is buying snacks for long car journeys. I cannot not lob a pack of peanut M&M and soft mints in with the petrol. It’s absurd.

seaduck · 11/10/2024 17:49

@harriethoyle Gutting. I also put on 0.2kg this week which was a kicker after two back to back FDs. Period started yesterday though so fingers crossed it's that and I'll lose loads next week 🤣

That is such a good hack @CrabPuff

That's brilliant @TeaRose29, weight will be gone in no time and I bet that week of wine was worth 3lb!

TeaRose29 · 11/10/2024 18:33

It was, @seaduck . Croatian white is delicious! 😊

CrabPuff · 11/10/2024 21:24

Right. Will confess to being in bed with the lights off and everything. Kitchen closed on 515. Happy days! Will try to find a solution for next week’s socialising. Maybe soups but so unreliable if they’re not my own or bought, for calorie control.

harriethoyle · 14/10/2024 08:32

Right!! I’m signing in for accountability 😜 thanks for the stupid scales support 🤣 I only put half a kilo on this weekend which I’m very pleased with. B2B today and tomorrow and maybe another one on Thursday. We’ll see!

tuna thin and half a slimwell chicken curry with broccoli tonight. Same again tomorrow to complete the set.

Who’s with me?

Me!
Usual FDs of Monday and Friday here.
Just had bagel thin and cheddar spread for breakfast
Will have sweet potato and butternut soup for lunch, followed by prawn curry and tiny portion of rice for dinner

harriethoyle · 14/10/2024 08:47

I’m always impressed by a Friday FD @Katypp that’s wine day in this house 🤣

OohMrDarcy · 14/10/2024 09:28

morning all

Just weighed in and stayed the same this week which is entirely my fault overindulging at the weekend ... Friday after FD I was 1kg down... annoyed at myself here. Hopefully just a digestion timing, but planning to be extra good this week as going in circles here at the moment!

NFD today - mini leftover roast planned for dinner

Katypp · 14/10/2024 09:29

@harriethoyle Pure practicalities dictated Friday as one if the best days. Teen is allowed a McDs so we have always eaten separately on Fridays.
It's hard enough thinking of a teen-friendly fast-friendly dinner once a week on Mondays!
I'm a non-drinker so the wine thing doesn't bother me although I think DH misses his Friday night can of Stella.
