Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

@OohMrDarcy well done on two this week!!

OohMrDarcy · 03/10/2024 07:38

Good luck today @AnnieLewis !

Lots of water should keep the tummy down to a low rumble

MonkeyTennis34 · 03/10/2024 07:58

Feeling headachey and bunged up this morning, think I've caught DD's cold.

Don't think I'll manage my planned FD today.

harriethoyle · 03/10/2024 08:26

I’ve also been full of cold @MonkeyTennis34 - it’s lingered for ages too. Good luck shaking it off!

Fell off the wagon a bit last week but I've recovered and back on it this week. Second FD this week. Just had some soup for lunch, not sure whats for tea yet, fancy a BLT with thin protein bagel but need to price up calories yet!

CrabPuff · 03/10/2024 19:41

Well done fellow fasters this week - I am wondering if I can do Sunday as I have a lot of peace that day. My jeans are a bit tight and I’ve only just got back into them. Bloody 2 weeks off. No more!

Will check in again on Sunday anyway, one way or another.

OohMrDarcy · 03/10/2024 21:15

Kitchen closed on 510 today

Super happy for the first 2 FD week for a few!

Think it's been the change of the seasons. This week has been soup and casseroles for FD ..just a few weeks ago it was salads

I've done a Sunday before @CrabPuff - can even do a little roast if you want one and are careful!

Castlerigg · 06/10/2024 11:19

Morning all. Back again for another attempt. Fell down the bread-hole, and it always takes a few days to climb back out. It bloats me up, wrecks my digestion, and is utterly devoid of nutritional value. But I keep getting sucked back in by it.

I'm exactly 148lb today, 10 stone 8lbs. I've been hovering around 145-146, can't seem to get below 145 for long. I took my eye off the ball and it has started creeping up again. I'm a stone heavier than I want to be. I'm going to have to be strict.

CrabPuff · 07/10/2024 07:24

I’m checking in for a FD today. I think the next might be Thurs but not sure. Either way. Back on it with a vengeance.

MonkeyTennis34 · 07/10/2024 08:29

Trying for a FD today.....

We shall see!

2 weeks till my holiday 😱

OohMrDarcy · 07/10/2024 09:28

Monday weigh in today and I'm back to 96.8 kg which is a loss of 1.2kg and back where I was lol
had a fab weekend and did an 11km hike including some hills which proved my fitness is coming back and felt fab!

FDs planned for Tuesday and Thursday this week at the moment

good luck @MonkeyTennis34 - you can do it!

harriethoyle · 07/10/2024 10:31

Morning all, I was supposed to be fasting today but woke up feeling dreadful - really weak, and full of a cold I have had for three weeks or so. I just cannot shake it off. I have also had a tension headache since Friday, which I suspect is due to various life stressors and so not being touched by paracetamol and ibuprofen! Pretty miserable Monday, all told 😩

So - I've had breakfast and am aiming for a mini, sticking to FD lunch and dinner and hoping to come in under 800 cals. Not ideal but better than nothing I hope...

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 07/10/2024 17:10

harriet - I try migraleve for really rotten headaches (and top tier hangovers if I’m quite honest) and it works better than anything else. If you can’t shake it.

MrDarcy - good weighing result! Fitness returns so quickly, it’s a good reminder. I have myself booked in for spin on Thursday I think and slightly dreading it but have to get back in the groove.

so far so good on today’s FD but am v hungry and have had a lot of tea - out of practice frankly but also glad it isn’t a B2B. Might be up to 600 though.

harriethoyle · 07/10/2024 18:19

Thanks @CrabPuff I’ll hunt some out if I can’t shift it. Not as bad tonight after chugging litres of water all day…

kitchen closing here on 730 which I’m pretty happy with tbh. Will see how I feel tomorrow before deciding if I do a full FD or just another mini.

OP posts:
MonkeyTennis34 · 07/10/2024 22:16

@harriethoyle
I also use Migraleve, I find it really effective.

Had a mare of a day and eaten sooo much sugar. A write off.

CrabPuff · 07/10/2024 22:35

Kitchen is closed on 540 and I am STARVING! So I’m going to go and put a pillow over my head and hope I can go to sleep then I am going to show a bacon sandwich who’s boss tomorrow morning on my walk. Unsmoked. Streaky. Seeded bread. Boat load of butter.

Castlerigg · 07/10/2024 22:48

Kitchen closed on 512 which I'm delighted with! I assume I'll have lost that excess stone by the morning. If not then definitely the next day. <nods>

Team lunch tomorrow though, to celebrate the end of a particularly hideous project at the busiest possible time of year. The knowledge of the big lunch tomorrow has made it easier to stay strong today though.

OohMrDarcy · 08/10/2024 07:33

Well done @Castlerigg

Checking in for FD here. Got a lovely soup planned for dinner so I just need to work out lunch, quite happy to wing that

harriethoyle · 08/10/2024 08:23

I’m doing another mini today I think - had a thin with peanut butter for breakfast and usual FD lunch and dinner. Should come in around 700 again I hope. Then I’ll do a proper FD Thursday. 🤞🏼

OP posts:
AnnieLewis · 08/10/2024 08:25

Managed more of an OMAD yesterday, think total cals were probably around 900, going for a FD today. Am
Also aiming to have magically lost a stone by morning. Totally do-able 😉

harriethoyle · 08/10/2024 10:08

Please can I sign up for the magic stone loss too - only lost 1/2 lb overnight, kthanksbye 😂

OP posts:
Castlerigg · 08/10/2024 14:09

@harriethoyle Sure! This time tomorrow we'll be like a pair of stick insects 😂

OohMrDarcy · 08/10/2024 19:42

Kitchen closed on a slightly over but not awful 621. I'll take it.

Need to stock up on more cold weather lunchtime FD options... Might get some eggs in, been a long time since I had a mini omelette 🤔

harriethoyle · 08/10/2024 20:53

Kitchen closing on 690 which gives 1420 for the last two days - almost a proper back to back! Very happy with that, with how grotty I felt yesterday.

FD on Thursday I think. Warm cheese scone with butter and marmite tomorrow for breakfast!

OP posts:
Castlerigg · 08/10/2024 22:41

Well done @harriethoyle.

No idea what my calories for today were, because of celebratory work lunch. But I'm aiming for another FD tomorrow.
