Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Checking in - have had a low cal fish pie and contemplating whether I now have Cajun chicken or a hot chocolate or some ice cream. Careful weighing required.

MonkeyTennis34 · 12/09/2024 19:10

@harriethoyle I'm loving "snaccident" 😂

2nd day of b2b and Kitchen closed on 679.

Really looking forward to 2 buttered crumpets for breakfast tomorrow.

CrabPuff · 12/09/2024 19:10

And separately; sorry to hear that MrDarcy - that’s not much fun.

I too have found that feature harriet, only I am MILES heavier than in 2009 or whenever and at the time I joined because I thought I was so fat! Never again! I was fine!

CrabPuff · 12/09/2024 20:46

Kitchen closed on an unbearably smug 450. I could squash a bit more in but if I really seriously ask myself am I ravenous, no I’m not. I was but the fish pie did an excellent job of comfort food. I’ve put my Cajun chicken in the freezer to help next week.

But I am having a croissant in the morning and how!

I love the end of the 2nd FD of the week. The menus for the weekend open up wide and ready to be studied!

MonkeyTennis34 · 13/09/2024 07:32

Woohoo, I'm now 9st 8.75lb!!!
Only just under 9 9 but I'm very pleased with that.

I definitely think my weight comes off more slowly now I'm in menopause...if I'd have done a b2b 5 years ago, I would probably have lost 1.5 lb.

Enjoying my crumpets now ☺️

seaduck · 13/09/2024 08:55

Well done @MonkeyTennis34 !!
0.2kg off me this week. Fasting went okay, except yesterday had an hour to kill with my daughter and went for a black coffee, bought her a cake and she didn't like it! I wasn't going to let a cake sit there. So had about 500 cals plus whatever was in the cake 😂

CrabPuff · 13/09/2024 09:11

Well done MonkeyTennis and Seaduck!

I’m 14st 3.75 so 1.5lbs off this week - though, I was very empty so I do think it could be water weight. Mostly because I definitely overate on Tuesday (so much cheese!) I will hope to do 2 FDs next week and stay the same. I do LOVE seeing the pounds come off on the scales.

MUST keep it up. I think I usually get cocky around the 14st 5 mark and “oh I’ll have this week off” and that’s fine for a holiday or maintenance but I really do want to be 11st something eventually.

MonkeyTennis34 · 13/09/2024 11:24

Thanks and well done on your losses @CrabPuff and @seaduck

Just got back from dog walk and having an oat milk latte and 2 malted milks…delish!
Planning on making a cake later for the weekend.
It’s an apricot, almond and yoghurt cake so actually quite healthy 🤨

harriethoyle · 13/09/2024 12:48

Great SV guys, well done. My DH bathroom scales are out of battery so I remain in blissful ignorance 🤣

Back after a week's holiday, a cold then covid. Weighed in this morning and have lost 4lb since August 19.
Still recovering from covid, but fast day today, menu is:
B: 1 slice brioche loaf + teaspoon apricot jam
Lunch: HM celery soup
Dinner: Poached hake with noodles in tomato and ginger broth (BBC Good Food recipe again)
If desperate: Rice cakes and cheese spread
Should be around 800 calories at the end of the day if I succumb to rice cakes.

CrabPuff · 17/09/2024 08:00

I like seeing other people’s menus - I’m so rigid due to lack of discipline I always have the same thing on a fast day.

NFD today but hopefully can do tomorrow and Thurs before I have guests for the weekend arriving on Sat.

harriethoyle · 18/09/2024 19:38

evening gang - I’m just back from a work course but decided I’d try a fast day today. I had salad at lunch, prawns mackerel and chicken with salad leaves and orzo and a fishcake tonight. I reckon it was about 900 cake for the day being quite pessimistic in my guesstimate. B2b tomorrow, beans on toast for lunch and fishcake and stir fry veg for lunch. By no means will it be a perfect b2b but otherwise I would have been face down in a fry up this morning so I’m counting it as a NSV !!

normal service resumes next week because life is back to normal and frankly, I cannot wait 🤣

I had intended to do a FD today and didn’t. And I can’t see it happening tomorrow either but will report back! I find it hard to fast when travelling!

MonkeyTennis34 · 18/09/2024 20:27

Meant to do a b2b today and tomorrow but think I'll have a NFD tomorrow and a FD on Friday.

Found it really hard today and feel quite headachey now.
Cals today = 548....which is probably why I've got a headache!

Going to get an early night and look forward to a nice breakfast tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 19/09/2024 15:57

I'm staying strong today - currently on 264 and with fishcake and stirfry waiting for tonight at 360. Happy enough with that! Driving tomorrow night rather than drinking and same on Sunday so that will keep the booze calories down.

526 for day two of my b2b. Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow 😊

FD here as well - second this week. Been struggling a bit with them this week, had a really heavy period and busy at work as well as the regular business of 3 kids and all their hobbies - made it through but really not enjoyed it. Went to gym yesterday as well and could only manage about 10 mins before I just gave up. Weigh day in the morning, hopefully it was worth it!

harriethoyle · 19/09/2024 20:47

Even more impressive you got them done @seaduck - and hopefully next week will feel far easier by comparison!

OP posts:
seaduck · 21/09/2024 18:49

Thanks @harriethoyle , it was a 0.2kg loss again so not nothing. Feeling in a real slump with it all, trying to motivate myself into not giving up!

Hope everyone else having a good weekend!

harriethoyle · 23/09/2024 11:22

Morning fellow fasters - I’m FD today and b2b Wednesday and Thursday. Forgot to weigh myself when I got up this morning so no idea about weekend damage! But drove Friday and Sunday nights so should have limited it…

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 24/09/2024 08:16

Morning! 640 calories yesterday and a change of plan with day 2 of a b2b today. Get it out the way 🤣

Who’s with me?

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 24/09/2024 08:31

morning all

not been able to fast for a couple of weeks, but keeping myself accountable and getting straight back in the swing - FD today. Stir Fry planned for my dinner - yum!

tiredmummy333 · 24/09/2024 09:28

Hi,

I did 5:2 years ago and lost weight. From memory I think I lost around 1pound per week but I wasn't exercising.

I've recently put on around 9lbs and I want to loose 2 lbs per week.

Do you think this is doable if I do 5:2 and also start walking every day?

I will try to do some strength training too but I'm not feeling very motivated at the moment. So thinking if I start with 5:2 and walking maybe that will be enough?

harriethoyle · 24/09/2024 11:12

Solidarity @OohMrDarcy I'm hungry already 😂

@tiredmummy333 weight loss rate will depend entirely on how much you weigh and how much you have to lose. If I were you I wouldn't focus on X pounds a week, I would just commit to the way of life because you know it works and you know you will lose weight regardless of how long it takes.

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 24/09/2024 11:24

good luck @harriethoyle - no hunger here yet, but have had a cup of tea and 2 glasses of squash. Going down to make lunch at about 12 so will count out what my dinner will be and work out what I can have to fill the rest!
