Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Everyone’s doing so well with all these losses!

Scales are so helpful - I struggled with just using jeans size as I think they give a little after being worn so it’s not THAT accurate. Much prefer the weekly weigh in having FINALLY got a spot that gives the same reading no matter how I stand on my wonky floors!

Definitely a tortoise over hare situation for me but I could never ever have stuck to low carb or low fat or 1200 cals a day for longer than a month. If that!

TeaRose29 · 06/09/2024 09:27

Well done to all the fasters and losers!

NFD yesterday but didn’t eat much. We’ve been having some new flooring laid in our utility room, which has involved two days of moving everything out and then putting it all back. And of course it was a great opportunity for a sort-out, so I’ve been really busy and pretty active. Anyway, much to my surprise I weighed in at 9.13 this morning, so I’ve broken finally broken through the 10st barrier! I went over it in June after a lot of family events, and I just hadn’t been able to drop those couple of pounds. Need to make sure I hang on to it this weekend. 9st 7 is my target 😊.

TeaRose29 · 06/09/2024 09:34

@seaduck I’ve done two Reformer Pilates classes in two days – an introductory one to show you how all the knobs and springs work, and a proper one – and this morning there isn’t a part of me that doesn’t ache 🤣🤣.

OohMrDarcy · 09/09/2024 08:34

morning all

Weekly weigh in day for me, and the scales have me at 96.8kg which is a loss of exactly 1kg!
That gives me a total in just over 6 months since I started again of 18kg, and if I throw in the extra from getting back to 16:8 24.4kg!

Monday FD for me, have a small roast left over from yesterday for dinner tonight which doesn't leave me with a massive amount, so I'm sticking to water / mint tea etc so that I can use remaining cals for a snack at lunch. I'll eat dinner early if I need to.

Anyone joining me today?

MonkeyTennis34 · 09/09/2024 08:53

@OohMrDarcy wowsers on your loss!!!

NFD here, but a very well/behaved one. Had a highly calorific weekend so definitely need to rein it in!

TeaRose29 · 09/09/2024 09:12

That is brilliant @OohMrDarcy !

Yes, joining you today. My plan is:

B: nothing
L: protein shake - about 250 calories
D: protein shake - about 250 caloris + small salad

Plus a soya milk allowance for my tea/coffee. Busy day ahead de-cluttering, then going for another reformer class which I don’t really fancy, as I’m feeling a bit tired, but I’m sure I will enjoy once I get there.

Good luck Darcy and anyone else joing us!

Tinydancer123 · 09/09/2024 09:17

I am back after a mini break.... well longer than a mini break and a gain after a holiday..... remind me do you fast or just 500 cals a day ? a stone to lose

OohMrDarcy · 09/09/2024 09:42

Hi @Tinydancer123

most do 500 cals twice a week, sometimes some do it back to back, which increases your allowance to 650 - I rarely do that though as find it is less sustainable

seaduck · 09/09/2024 12:27

@OohMrDarcy 24kg is seriously impressive and inspiring! Well done!

OohMrDarcy · 09/09/2024 20:43

Kitchen closed on 550 today, happy with that

How did you do @TeaRose29 ?

Thanks for all the comments on the loss so far. Slow and steady wins the race 😇 it's not all linear, was up and down all August but the pattern is nice to see!

TeaRose29 · 10/09/2024 15:57

@OohMrDarcy congrats, you did well. Mine turned into a 16:8 as when I got back from Pilates (starving) DH had made a wonderful fish pie (he had forgotten all about my fast 😊) and I couldn’t very well refuse to eat it! I tried to stick to the fish bits and not have much of the potato or cheese. So definitely over calorie wise, but nice healthy high protein food.

Today is TDEE as I have already walked for 45 minutes and played tennis for 2.5 hours, but trying to stick to protein althou I did have 2 slices of Battenburg cake Blush. I’ll be going for a mini tomorrow.

CrabPuff · 10/09/2024 17:05

NFD for me today and yesterday but on for a B2B tomorrow and Thursday. I think I’m more motivated at the beginning of the week but there was no way round it so hopefully tomorrow and Thurs will be easyish. Next week is tricky as I have a lot of socialising in the diary but can probably do Wednesday and Thursday again if I say no to some things.

harriethoyle · 11/09/2024 08:04

Morning gang!! Back from holiday and after 6 weeks without scales the building work has finished, enabling me to get back on them 🙄🙈 5 pounds on after a fabulous 10 day trip and b2b fast days today and tomorrow. Hoping to get a few off this week and next week will do b2b Weds Thurs because of DH 50th birthday on Monday!! ALL the champagne but luckily he doesn’t like cake so I’ll swerve that at least 🤣

who’s with me today?

OP posts:
MonkeyTennis34 · 11/09/2024 08:50

@harriethoyle I'm also going to attempt a b2b today and tomorrow...

Just started the day with a 56cal activia yoghurt.

Good luck everyone!

CrabPuff · 11/09/2024 08:55

I’m on for today and tomorrow - coffee only for
as long as I can stand and then probably salmon and lentils. Must get my list of reasons to fast up - it feels like a while since I had did it!

TeaRose29 · 11/09/2024 09:12

I’m doing a mini. Nice and sunny here and I plan a final push in the garden and getting my mulch down before the winter (I live an exciting life 😊), so I’ll need a bit of energy to keep me going.

I want to look my best for our holiday at the end of the month, but my main reason for dropping these last few pounds is I want to have a MAJOR WARDROBE SORTOUT. I want to get to not so much a weight as a size that I’m happy with and can stick to, then do a Marie Kondo on all my clothes, and get rid of anything that is too big/too small etc.

Welcome back @harriethoyle ! Hope you are feeling refreshed. Those 5 pounds will come straight off!

OohMrDarcy · 11/09/2024 09:27

ooh lots of B2B's and FDs going on today - good luck all!

NFD for me (FD tomorrow!)

CrabPuff · 11/09/2024 09:45

I hear that on the wardrobe - I have so many nice clothes that are a mere size down from my current size so it would save a fortune! They’re all winter clothes too - I expand during summer in loose dresses and the last few years have omitted to shrink back down again.

CrabPuff · 11/09/2024 19:58

Kitchen closed on day 1 of B2B 627.

I was properly hungry today so reverted to my 2 ready meal schedule by 2pm.

Tomorrow is likely soup and fish pie.

18/25 days to booking Botox!

harriethoyle · 11/09/2024 20:16

Kitchen closed here at 771 and b2b tomorrow… it’s not going to be a zinger but frankly anything’s better than my holiday daily calories intake!!

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 12/09/2024 10:14

Calories came in at about 900, so a bit over a mini. However, I did a huge amount of physical exercise – a couple of hours gardening, then it started to rain so I came in and carried on with my decluttering project, which involved going up and down two flights of stairs numerous times and lifting heavy bags. I also stuck to my protein regime, so I didn’t get too hungry, so I’m taking it as a win! Stomach definitely feeling flatter. I’m going to do the same thing today, as I’m carrying on with the decluttering – how do teenage girls amass quite so many clothes? 😊

Very well done @CrabPuff and @harriethoyle , and good luck to everyone fasting today.

harriethoyle · 12/09/2024 10:18

Signing in for day 2 b2b. A pound off overnight which is heartening - probably just plane bloat but I'll take it!

MFP has a great new feature BTW for those who track their weight - you can see what you are today, compared to a week, a month etc. I just checked it from when I first started fasting (years ago!) and I am 17.7lbs down - helps remind me that it's a marathon not a sprint and even if I currently feel pudgy, I am WAY better than I used to be!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 12/09/2024 11:48

morning all, was due to be a FD today but have had a family funeral so postponing to tomorrow I think - will see how I feel then, if needed only one this week isn't the end of the world

MonkeyTennis34 · 12/09/2024 12:08

@OohMrDarcy I hope the funeral is bearable.

Day 2 of b2b here too. I only lost 0.25lb overnight but if I lose anything today I'll be under 9st 9lb for the first time in 10 years. 🤞🏻

harriethoyle · 12/09/2024 19:03

Sorry to hear that @OohMrDarcy hope you’re ok.

I’ve had a snaccident at the airport lounge. The flapjacks are irresistible 🤣🙈 oh well. At least I managed an IF booze free day! clutches at straws
