Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

@seaduck that is only a tiny increase and will come straight off. We must definitely enjoy our holidays!

FD for me today so joining you @OohMrDarcy . Just tea and coffee so far and thankfully I’m not feeling at all hungry. Planning a protein shake when I do feel hungry, and poached salmon with salad for dinner.

CrabPuff · 02/09/2024 13:47

I very stupidly had breakfast - so unless I have nothing else all day, I’m going to have to have my first FD of the week tomorrow instead of today as planned.

That said, I should give it a whirl. Now I’m a couple of months in, I’m more used to sitting with hunger and while it wouldn’t be my preferred way to do the first day of a B2B it is ONLY one day.

Will check in later, hopefully not having scarfed down a huge carbonara..

SydneyCarton · 02/09/2024 14:06

Three days in the office this week, so my plan is to do 16:8 today and tomorrow, normal eating on Wednesday and then one FD on Thursday, fasting on days where I'm not at home and eating to TDEE on other days. Gradually building back up to 5:2 from next week

OohMrDarcy · 02/09/2024 14:38

After someone upthread mentioned about 5:2 mode on nutracheck, I've switched from MFP today and I love it so much more already! I have just spotted I'm on a trial though - is there a cost to use? or is there a free option?

CrabPuff · 02/09/2024 21:43

Kitchen closed. I have had NOTHING since my accidental breakfast except a taste of some batch cooking - but I don’t know if I can do a second day tomorrow, I am ravenous! I think I’ve had less than 600 so I might just let it pass as a single day (fairly active) but not count it towards my Botox goal of 25 days.

and 2nd probably on Wednesday.

once my appetite is awake, it’s game over usually so I am pleased that my getting used to hunger has made it possible. I usually swear by nothing til lunch on a B2B and nothing til 6pm on a 500 cal day otherwise it’s not possible, but it is!

All about practice!

MonkeyTennis34 · 03/09/2024 07:30

@OohMrDarcy
I think I had a trial then paid £34 for the year.

OohMrDarcy · 03/09/2024 07:49

Morning all

Kitchen closed on 540 last night so happy with that

@CrabPuff that sounds amazing, well done!!

Thanks @MonkeyTennis34

CrabPuff · 03/09/2024 10:23

Definitely having a non FD today - back on it tomorrow. It’ll have to be a one meal day but that’s ok - I’m much busier tomorrow during the day so should be fine I hope.

Reasonably heathy day of food in the fridge and a ready meal lasagne for tomorrow so hopefully all on track. I will probably weigh next week, not this week. And hope to be under 14st 7.

SydneyCarton · 03/09/2024 11:18

Awful sleep last night so no 16:8 for me today as I needed tea and toast to stay awake - WFH so I can have a lunchtime nap if I need to! Trying not to mainline sugar and caffeine to keep me alert, but it's tough...

TeaRose29 · 03/09/2024 16:02

0.5 pound off this morning after FD yesterday, so happy with that. Currently 10.00.05 so hoping to be in the 9s by next week 🤞.

MonkeyTennis34 · 03/09/2024 20:18

Well done @TeaRose29

FD ended on 791 cals here.
Just had half a malted milk biscuit with my tea!
If I could crack having a cuppa without a biscuit I'd be onto a winner!!

Next FD will be Thursday.

Hoping to go sub 9st 10lb this week...haven't been that weight in a very long time.

TeaRose29 · 04/09/2024 09:43

Another 1/4 pound off this morning, so very pleased with that. I did a lot of exercise yesterday and just ate healthily (apart from the two triangles of Toblerone Blush). Going for a mini of 800 today, as I’ve got my first Reformer Pilates class this afternoon and don’t want to be starving for that.

Well done @MonkeyTennis34 . At least it was only half a biscuit!

Anyone else fasting today?

seaduck · 04/09/2024 09:47

Well done @TeaRose29 . Good luck with the pilates, would like to give that a try.

Had a good fast day yesterday, only 487. Did a sneaky weigh this morning and it looked positive, I officially weigh on Fridays but it looked like the holiday weight had disappeared. I know it's always up and down but fingers crossed.. Got another FD before then.

MonkeyTennis34 · 04/09/2024 14:06

Well done @TeaRose29 @seaduck
on your losses.

On an NFD here and just ate a whole
ball of mozzarella, had no idea it was over 500 cals 🤦🏼‍♀️

CrabPuff · 04/09/2024 15:17

Good losses!

FD today - holding out til 6pm I think or maybe 6.30 then an early night and as ever look forward to waking up tomorrow having done the time for the week.

low calorie lasagne as ready meal of choice tonight - lasagne usually feels quite indulgent so hopefully it’s good!

CrabPuff · 04/09/2024 22:08

Ok - kitchen closed on 479cals - not too hard today. Looking forward to a solid breakfast tomorrow though!

OohMrDarcy · 05/09/2024 08:49

morning all

checking in for a Thursday FD - we are having a chilli tonight, so I'll just have the mince with a sprinkle of cheese and no rice, yummy.

congrats all on the successful FD's and losses!

CrabPuff · 05/09/2024 11:48

I did a weigh in as thought I might as well use it to not go mad for the NFD and I’m down 1lb and 3/4 so 14st 5 and 1/4.

it’s basically 7lbs in 6 weeks - so not particularly quick but definitely happening. Which when I’m eating what I want on the other 5 days is so worth it.

OohMrDarcy · 05/09/2024 12:52

fantastic news @CrabPuff - congrats! Slow and steady wins the race, and as you say - only having to focus properly 2 days a week makes it really sustainable!

MonkeyTennis34 · 05/09/2024 18:04

@CrabPuff yay!! Well done you 🙂

FD here.

Doing quite well (for me).

Once I've had dinner and there's no slip up between then and bedtime, 625 cals will have been consumed so I'm really hoping to see a loss tomorrow morning 🤞🏻

OohMrDarcy · 05/09/2024 21:10

Kitchen closed on 497 😇

MonkeyTennis34 · 05/09/2024 22:16

OohMrDarcy · 05/09/2024 21:10

Kitchen closed on 497 😇

😳

MonkeyTennis34 · 06/09/2024 07:28

Whoopee!!
I've lost 1.25lb!

Really pleased with that 😀

I was definitely more restrained on my NFDs this past week and it's paid off.

seaduck · 06/09/2024 07:38

Aww amazing work. @MonkeyTennis34 . Great effort on the NFDs, I havent really tried to tackle those yet.

I don't know what's going on. I seem to have had a massive weight loss. Two weeks ago on Friday, I weighed 104.9kg, went away on holiday for a week, ate everything, weighed first day back (this Monday), just to assess the damage, it was 106.5kg. weighed this morning, official weigh day on Fridays and it was 103.7kg! I mean I'll definitely take it!! But I'm sure it's physically impossible to lose 2.8kg in 4 days. 🤣

OohMrDarcy · 06/09/2024 08:27

morning all

the scales were kind to me today, will hold off for monday official weigh in as usual.

@MonkeyTennis34 - congrats!

@seaduck - that is the post holiday bloat gone as well! It won't all be fat, but massive congratulations!
