5:2 thread 102: Faster than a speeding bullet!

harriethoyle · 22/06/2024 08:08

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Hope you are ok @CrabPuff . Hard when you aren't 100%.

As predicted 400g back on this morning. And I ate a bowl of leftover cold pasta when doing the kids' tea which is EXACTLY the kind of thing I would like not to do!!!

Friends round for dinner tomorrow and out on Saturday....but hopefully proper fasting starts next week.

Good luck everyone.

OohMrDarcy · 14/08/2024 21:54

kitchen closed on around 600 tonight - finding this second part of the summer holidays trickier but we keep moving forward!

harriethoyle · 15/08/2024 08:41

Kitchen closed c650 last night. I’m finding it TOUGH without scales to keep me on track. The good news is end of building work is in sight and should be done in a couple of weeks. After which we go on holiday 🤣🙈 trying to damage limit until then!

berryhand · 15/08/2024 10:04

That's a good strategy with the list @CrabPuff, I might need to start doing that!

I am doing FD2 today despite there being office drinks this eve....will just have to resist.

I've had one slice of toast with peanut butter and will have a salad at some point during the day today which should hopefully keep me going.

CrabPuff · 15/08/2024 12:03

Thanks Persis, I’m not feeling too terrible - it’s basically a mild summer cold but when I did contemplate binning off yesterday, I realised that I should just use my (slightly) lower appetite to my advantage

Not so low I didn’t cram in TWO croissants this morning! I have a rule never to cook two at the same time but I had at least half an hour in between and put the second in with some enthusiasm.

salad for lunch today (with all the calorific accompaniments discussed upthread) - healthy but not really low cal.

Berry - highly recommend the list. I have it on my phone Notes, titled “Read if you don’t want to fast!”

it has a couple of timely reminders of barely squeezing into dresses just before parties and how pissed off with myself I was for not just bloody staying the same, let alone going on a diet. Plus some upcoming events in the Autumn an order to go and try on some jeans that used to be my favourite and now won’t do up at all.

in other news, I balanced carefully on the scales on the one flat bit of the floor (I think) and tried a few different angles and am consistently 14st 9 so I’m going to log that in MFP.

Good luck fasters!

MonkeyTennis34 · 16/08/2024 07:50

As I originally thought, this week was always going to be a non-starter...although I did manage to get one pointless FD in!

DD's bday today and mine tomorrow so next week is looking a much better option!

seaduck · 16/08/2024 09:49

Weigh day today, 0.5kg loss this week. Really pleased with that. Done 2 FDs this week and usually do Tues and Thurs so I'm really happy no FDs till Tues 🤣.
Have a nice weekend everyone!

harriethoyle · 16/08/2024 11:16

Happy birthday for tomorrow @MonkeyTennis34 - remember, one FD is better than none!!

MonkeyTennis34 · 16/08/2024 11:41

@harriethoyle thank you ☺️
I guess you're right re the 1 FD.

Next week I MUST get back on the 5:2 train.
I'd really love to lose the weight for my holiday in late October.

OohMrDarcy · 18/08/2024 07:44

Morning all

Checking in for a Sunday FD. Chicken and salad for dinner today.

Happy birthday @MonkeyTennis34

Congratulations on the loss @seaduck

MonkeyTennis34 · 18/08/2024 08:14

@OohMrDarcy Thank you!

I had a fantastic day full of pressies, surprises and many, many calories 😀

Back on it tomorrow.

OohMrDarcy · 18/08/2024 19:28

As it absolutely should be on your birthday @MonkeyTennis34

Closed the kitchen on around 550 today... Debating b2b tomorrow as that works quite well with my week but will see how I feel in the morning (and what the scales say I suspect!)

Katypp · 18/08/2024 20:11

Weigh in and loss of 6lb (including the last two weeks gain)
Off to Majorca early tomorrow, trying to stick to rules when away but let's see.

Castlerigg · 18/08/2024 20:59

I'm back for another go. I didn't really manage much actual fasting last time, because I kept having morning lattes and evening wine. I've realised I can't do both, and I really do value my morning lattes with DP, so I'm keeping those and ditching the booze, at least during the week.

Kitchen closed on about 1600 calories today, but that's an estimate. I don't mind too much because dinner was super healthy salad with some smoked mackerel caught by DP yesterday. It was delicious. However, the fish finger and mushy pea panini at lunchtime was somewhat less healthy - but equally delicious!

Planning Monday and Thursday FDs.

TeaRose29 · 18/08/2024 23:38

Hello Harriet and co, I’m rejoining if that’s OK. Was part of the group last year and did really well with the fasting. I’m 5’6” and currently weigh 10.1 1/2. I’m usually a bit under 10 stone, but I’m currently marking professional exam papers and it’s a really tricky combination of being boring/repetitive and requiring a lot of concentration. Therefore, custard creams help enormously. Before things get out of hand I’m jumping back on the fasting wagon, and I really appreciate this group for accountability.

So, tomorrow is a FD! I plan to skip breakfast and have a protein shake or quark for lunch. Hope I will have some fellow travellers!

OohMrDarcy · 19/08/2024 08:28

morning all

Weighed in today at 98.1kg - so a loss of 0.2kg

Got a lot going on at the moment so just keeping on. Making it b2b today as feeling good and gives me a slightly bigger allowance for the day too

CrabPuff · 19/08/2024 15:39

So - am fasting tomorrow then Weds I think. Large Weekend. Fasting definitely needed!

harriethoyle · 19/08/2024 19:56

Evening everyone. Welcome back @TeaRose29 @Castlerigg 😃 How did my fellow fasters get on?

kitchen closing here 760 because I had some leftover spaghetti which needed eating up from the weekend 🤣 b2b so I’ll be stricter tomorrow to make up for it. Tuna thin and king prawn fishcake planned.

Castlerigg · 19/08/2024 20:06

Around 580 calories today, but it's a bit of a guesstimate.

DP went fishing and caught some mackerel at the weekend, and smoked them at home, so I had some for dinner this evening. I had a go at making a salad similar to the M&S super green one (seems to be the official MN salad Grin). Mine wasn't as good as theirs, but it was very filling. I'm calling it a win 🙂

Lucylurker · 19/08/2024 20:16

Fd here. Second week and going to weigh tomorrow. Wasn’t great last week so fingers crossed for tomorrow. Was more careful than usual on non fast days and actually didn’t have much of an appetite. Need to up the exercise though, went for a walk on the weekend and felt very unfit.
good luck fellow fasters.

MelodyMalone · 19/08/2024 20:20

Ah, I think this is a thread I need to join!

Did 5:2 fairly consistently a few years ago and found it a very effective way of losing weight, and not hard to keep up once I got into the habit. But struggling to get motivated these days, and weight has crept back on. I need to get back into better habits!

TeaRose29 · 19/08/2024 20:29

Very busy day. At my desk at 7.30, four hours marking, then 2.5 hours gardening (big weeding & replanting project on at the moment), then another four hours marking, so totally knackered. Only had a low-cal protein shake and tea with soya milk during the day. Just had a small dinner (cooked by DH 🙏) of cod, airfryer chips and peas. Don’t know the calories but probably no more than 500. However, I am having a glass of wine to wind down. So today probably a mini – I tend to do 800 cals anyway, due to my hypoglycaemia. Cutting myself a bit of slack until the marking is done 😊. Well done @harriethoyle and @Castlerigg .
