Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

That's gutting @Badlifeday I'd be so cross. Mine is on MFP and I like the downward trend for inspiration!

Well, Wednesday fasting has not happened Grin Feel a little delicate this morning but nothing horrendous. I ended up eating nothing but a couple of Celebrations until we went to the pub as I got tied up with stuff at work, but managed a glass of wine without falling over, and then we were off to the meal. Lovely (pricey!) burger and fries, and some more wine! Not the healthiest day, but hopefully swerved some calories

harriethoyle · 06/12/2023 11:38

TBF @SydneyCarton that sounds relatively restrained for a Christmas do! Mine's at lunchtime this year and we've got to come back to the office to work in the afternoon?! So I won't even be having a glass of wine!

We're having a Christmas party at our house though on 22nd Dec which will involve ALL the food and wine so I will make up for it 😉

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 07/12/2023 10:48

@harriethoyle I'm a civil servant so it's all out of our own pocket and is pretty low key so as not to annoy the Daily Mail Hmm Bad form making you go back to the office afterwards, but at least you have your own party to look forward to!

harriethoyle · 07/12/2023 11:05

@SydneyCarton exactly the same reason for our enforced afternoon work... I'd rather do a FD tbh!!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 07/12/2023 21:48

Kitchen closing on 768 - bit high but had to have an emergency thin. This weather makes fasting HARD!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 15/12/2023 07:38

Morning all - Christmas is making fasting VERY difficult. Managed a FD on Tuesday and going for an AF mini today. FD planned for Monday and Thursday and AF Tuesday and Wednesday. I might just then segue into AF (aka skipping breakfast!) until after Christmas.

On the plus side, the Christmas chocolates remain unopened, the cake is, as yet, uncut, and the Baileys has yet to be uncorked so I'm chalking that up as a win?!

OP posts:
Badlifeday · 15/12/2023 07:56

It's hard isn't it?! I can't do a back to back fast, just too hungry. So I had an eating day yesterday but have a family thing today and new so to eat at that. It plays havoc with my fasting schedule!

SydneyCarton · 15/12/2023 11:33

You're doing much better than me, although I have had a nasty cough all this week so haven't been doing any fasting or proper exercise as I gasp and splutter through the day. Really hoping to knock it on the head by the weekend and do at least one FD next week before the slide into Christmas gluttony.

I have uncorked the Baileys, but the chocs are still unopened. No Christmas cake as I'm the only one who likes it and it's a faff to make, but we might get a chocolate log at some point. Haven't even got the tree up yet!

TeaRose29 · 15/12/2023 17:08

Hello Everyone, is it ok if I rejoin? We were away on our cruise the first two weeks of October (miraculously, no weight gain), and I have been working on a very big commission since we got back, so never got back properly into fasting, or this thread. Being tied to the computer umpteen hours a day has meant less exercise and more snacking Blush. Thankfully I’ve only put on a couple of pounds, but I need to nip it in the bud (or as my friend’s Norwegian husband used to say, lick it in the butt 😬). It’s SO HARD at this time of year: cold and wet and dark, and now all the Christmas temptations.

I’m planning to take it very easy, work-wise, in January, so that I can focus on diet and exercise. Will anyone be joining me in Dry January?

harriethoyle · 16/12/2023 08:09

God no @TeaRose29 - January is far too miserable without being sober! 🤣

Yesterday's mini derailed by flight cancellation, travel changes, a dash to an alternative airport and wine in the lounge 🙈 IF starts today to try and limit the Christmas damage!

harriethoyle · 18/12/2023 10:09

Morning all!! Anyone with me today? Last Monday FD for a couple of weeks. Aiming for Mon/Thurs this week and IF on the other days. It's the only way to limit the damage I think!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 18/12/2023 13:26

I'm unusually in the office on a Monday so attempting a FD, although it may end up being more of a 20:4 if I'm honest. I think I'm in again tomorrow so will have a go at a b2b and possibly some IF as well. I'm feeling very podgy and haven't been for a run in ages (coughing too much last week) so want to try a couple of short runs Weds/Thurs/Fri just to shake off the sluggishness.

Talkinpeace · 28/12/2023 15:31

Popping by to say hello.
I will be restarting 5:2 in the New Year.
I first posted on thread 3 but have rather fallen off the wagon since then.

harriethoyle · 01/01/2024 13:20

Happy new year, fasters! I've managed comparatively well with some IFs to limit Christmas damage but have definitely plumped up a bit 🤣 pre skiing FD tomorrow and IF Wed-Fri before a fortnight on the slopes... After which I'll probably need a gastric band!

HNY fasters. Joining here as weight has really crept up over the last couple of years and now I need to get a handle on things.

I've formed some terrible habits, particularly around snacking and really need something to get me back on track. I get bored doing standard calorie counting as I end up getting stuck eating the same things so hoping this will work better for me psychologically.

Any tips for a first timer?

berryhand · 01/01/2024 15:00

Should say I want to lose three stone ideally, two realistically, this year. Currently 5ft7 and about 83kg.

Talkinpeace · 01/01/2024 15:09

@berryhand
No snacking.
Drink a pint of water before every meal
those two will let you hit the ground running.

harriethoyle · 01/01/2024 16:28

Welcome @berryhand!

Track everything initially. Drink lots of fluids. I find skipping breakfast and just doing lunch and dinner more effective than 3 small meals. Bulk your dinners out with vegetables- broccoli, shredded cabbage, courgetti, salad. Fast on busy days - it's much easier! Try not to have tempting food in the house.

Good luck! Keep us posted 😊

Well done @harriethoyle for keeping the threads going.
I was listening quietly when we last met.

berryhand · 01/01/2024 16:59

Thanks for the good advice everyone.

My plan is definitely to fast on my busiest days, I think I'll aim for Tuesdays and Fridays or Mondays and Thursdays depending on what I've got on.

harriethoyle · 01/01/2024 17:27

You're welcome @Talkinpeace - almost entirely self-interest because I find the accountability so helpful!

@berryhand don't forget if you do a back to back (b2b) you get 1300 over the 2 days. I tend to be virtuous on day 1 and then splurge 800 on day 2!

OP posts:
Talkinpeace · 01/01/2024 17:36

The accountability is why I am back.
Knowing I need to post each week whether I've messed up or not is what will get me back to happy weight.

berryhand · 01/01/2024 17:50

100% on the accountability! What sort of things do you usually eat on FD @harriethoyle @Talkinpeace?

Talkinpeace · 01/01/2024 17:55

Normal fast day is
Pint of tea at 7:30 am
Pint of tea at noon
Pint of tea around 3pm
and then a supper of a tub of veg soup like this https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-tomato--lentil---red-pepper-soup-600g
or a veg omelette with a few parmesan shavings
washed down with water.

Next day only tea until lunch - so its 36 hours on 500 calories.

If I am good and do that twice a week and stay within TDEE the rest of the time
it comes together quite quickly.
