Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I'm fasting on Thursday too @SydneyCarton I'll see you there...

Evening ladies…
sorry, I seem to have been AWOL recently, not sure where the weeks are going…
I’ve been sticking to my 2 FD’s a week, although I do 800 calories a week. Have been consistently loosing and now at 9st 7lbs. Half a stone to go to my target.
First FD of the week for me today as I was soooooo hungry yesterday 🤦🏻‍♀️

Badlifeday · 23/11/2023 06:48

Fasting today. I must remind myself to drink more water. I wake up with a headache the next day if I don't. Have gone off the teas I bought myself as a "treat" (!) for fast days.

harriethoyle · 23/11/2023 10:00

Hi @Badlifeday nice to see you! I am also fasting today - sent DH out for thins and he came back with wraps which are twice the calories and not very FD friendly. Have suggested he try against at lunchtime 😂On a very boring course which isn't helpful in keeping me busy but is helpful is anchoring me away from the fridge!

Also just signed up for our local leisure centre. Going to try and get some regular exercise into my life now I've moved back to the local office and reduced my daily commute by 3 hours... 😜

Had to take a break this week as have horrid cold where the congestion just won't shift so feeling too grotty to fast

harriethoyle · 23/11/2023 14:55

I'm streaming with cold too today @Echobelly - definitely making it a lot harder.

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 23/11/2023 19:27

Kitchen closing here on c.600 calories. I've guesstimated slightly high!

OP posts:
Badlifeday · 23/11/2023 22:51

Oh some exercise sounds very good @harriethoyle and since you're paying for it you will need to be committed! I've done so little exercise since the Autumn began, I've become a total couch potato.

SydneyCarton · 24/11/2023 11:34

Kitchen closed yesterday on probably around 800 - I fell into some carbs. That makes 1600 for the two FDs and about 2000 for my 16:8 day, so 3600 across 3 days and an average of 1200 per day. Probably could have been better, although on the plus side I have been for a 5k run this morning.

harriethoyle · 27/11/2023 10:09

Morning all - happy Monday! Anyone with me today? Am doing a b2b and a FD on Thursday. Tuna thin for lunch and baked fish for tea and a 6pm exercise class booked if work allows... 6pm might be optimistic but we'll see.

Onwards and downwards!!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 27/11/2023 19:01

Kitchen closing on 655. Didn't make my class 😭 I think 6pm is just too optimistic particularly when DH is away as he is this week. There's a 6.30 class on Wednesday and a 7pm on Thursday which I'm going to try instead I think

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 28/11/2023 11:21

655 is great for a b2b @harriethoyle. I'm on day 1 of a b2b here and feeling OK so far, although I do need to leave work early so will finish off the day at home, which often proves troublesome. My last few FDs have ended up being 20:4 intermittent fasting days instead, which is better than nothing but not strictly 5:2. Slacked off running yesterday as well (it was cold and wet!) 😬

harriethoyle · 28/11/2023 18:29

Kitchen closing here on 770ish which is a bit high for day 2 but today has been a massive trial... am full of cold and slept appallingly last night, ended up leaving work early and going home via the chemist for some night nurse I felt so rough! So even though it's high, it feels like a triumph... 🙈

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 29/11/2023 13:04

Oh bad luck @harriethoyle but well done on even trying to fast with a bad cold, I'd have ducked out at the first sniffle! Hope you feel better soon.
Kitchen closed here on around 750 yesterday which leaves me 550 ish for day 2 today.

Echobelly · 29/11/2023 22:10

Weighed myself 8 weeks from last time, about 12 weeks from start of 5:2. Hoped maybe to have got to 9st 3, which would be at about 1/2lb loss per week as it seemed to be going from a starting weight of just over 9st 9lb.

A shade under 9st 4lb, not surprising perhaps as I was pig-sick with a bad cold all last week, so no exercise or fast days in that time. But suggests I might have been at about 9st 3 if not for that. I had only just started an extra exercise session at the office gym as well before I was ill - going back tomorrow. I think I'm just going to keep going with 5:2 as long as I can bear it and see at what point the weight loss tails off as obviously it won't drop continuously, it has to get to a floor. If I can get to 9 stone I'll be happy and if I can't quite make it to 9 stone I'll also be happy.

Next week might be hard to find days, unless I do a B2B with a slightly higher calorie intake if that's the best I can do. Or maybe I can do it on same calories, it's not like I feel any hungrier the morning after a fast day I find.

harriethoyle · 30/11/2023 11:33

That's good steady progress @Echobelly well done!

I am fasting today - 3rd FD of this week. Anyone with me?

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 30/11/2023 19:09

A failed FD from me... got home tired cold and hungry so I had beans on roast with cheese and a slice of toast with Biscoff spread. Yummy!! I'll try for three again next week...

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 01/12/2023 10:49

My children love the Biscoff biscuits but we've not tried the spread 🤔

Not a proper FD for me today but trying to do IF until 1 o'clock - rather too many crisps last night Blush

harriethoyle · 01/12/2023 14:51

@SydneyCarton it's incredible and the Aldi dupe is so good. I only have it in the house because I was being a good stepmother (I know many MNers refuse to believe such a thing exists!) and made my DSDs biscoff blondies. Once this jar is finished I won't rebuy because it is fatally delicious!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 04/12/2023 08:40

Morning all! Anyone with me today? I am doing b2b today and tomorrow and contemplating a third FD on Thursday, depends how I get on tbh... It's cold and slushy and I have a walk to get the car this morning because I could only get it halfway up our hill last night. Happy Monday!! 😂

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 04/12/2023 10:02

Already had breakfast crumpets and a chocolate biscuit, so that rules me out! Contemplating whether to do some sort of fast tomorrow - Tuesday is one of my office days and usually a 5:2 day, but it's our work Christmas meal in the evening and there'll be drinks beforehand, so I don't want to fall over through lack of food. Might try and do IF until lunchtime and then get something light. Will try a proper FD on Wednesday if I'm not too hungover Confused

harriethoyle · 04/12/2023 11:51

I've got crumpets for Wednesday breakfast @SydneyCarton 😋

I wouldn't even TRY for a fast on Wednesday! 😂

When are people stopping for Christmas? I think I will fast up to 21st Dec (try and get 2/3 in that week) and then IF as the rule rather than the exception save for Christmas Day etc...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 04/12/2023 20:18

Kitchen closing here on c.690. Back tomorrow for more of the same!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 05/12/2023 19:21

Kitchen closing on 679. But I am still hungry 🤣 we'll see if there's an emergency thin later on. Or maybe an oats so simple sachet 🙈

OP posts:
Badlifeday · 06/12/2023 06:52

I braved the scales yesterday after a gap (stopped fasting when I was ill recently and felt I'd gained a heap of weight) and went to record it on the nhs bmi app as I always do - to find the app has disappeared! The App Store says it's not available anymore. All my data has gone with it - the nice chart that showed my weight loss over the past two years - gone!
I wish I'd screenshotted it or something. ☹️
