Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@floranginajelly I lose on 3FD a week and maintain on 2. Worth popping a couple of strict days in to see if that helps?

1.5kg of holiday bloat off overnight. Back tomorrow for b2b to get some more off!

OP posts:
Badlifeday · 07/11/2023 09:14

That's really hard, @FiftynFooked maybe work out the smallest thing that would prevent the nausea and eat that? Crackers/slice of toast kind of thing?

floranginajelly · 07/11/2023 14:50

Yes @harriethoyle I need more structure
Good holiday?

Thanks it's been miserable and frustrating because I know this works! Anyway day two of avoiding black coffee and drinking herbal teas. They're not my favourite but they fill the need for a warm drink. Plus the mint tea seems to keep the acidity and ickyness at bay so fingers crossed!

harriethoyle · 08/11/2023 09:28

Lovely thanks @floranginajelly but already feels so long ago 😂

I'm with you today @FiftynFooked on day one of a possible b2b - depends on how today goes! French onion soup for lunch and baked fish and veg for tea.

Day two of a b2b for me. Yesterday came in more of a mini at 1000 cals but I’m happy with that for the first one in a month. Today seems okay so far (skipped breakfast and lunch which is usual for me on a FD) but I’ve just eaten a bit of cheese and a few crisps and suddenly felt very nauseous and threw up. Feeling okay now but a bit unsettling Confused

harriethoyle · 08/11/2023 20:50

Hope you feel better soon @SydneyCarton . Maybe an early night will help?

Kitchen closing here bang on 700. Back tomorrow for some form of FD although it might be a relaxed one. We'll see!

SydneyCarton · 09/11/2023 15:04

Much better thanks @harriethoyle , I managed to keep a slice of toast down and then had some cheese and crackers. I'm not usually a sick-y person even when I've been pregnant, so no idea what caused it. Not a winter bug hopefully, there is Too Much To Do!

I think the two FDs probably came in around 1500 in total, which I'm happy with as a reintroduction after holiday indulgences.

harriethoyle · 10/11/2023 09:50

An excellent post holiday week here, shedding almost 3kg of holiday bloat - which just shows, quick on, quick off.

HOWEVER. I have an EXTREMELY robust weekend planned with dear friends who only stay once a year so I am fully expecting to put 2.5kg back on 😂See you here on Monday for same old, same old! 😉

Nice work @harriethoyle 😁😁

I've really hit a sticking point and I know I need to be stricter but ugghhhh it's so cold and I'm so tired 🤣 so I'm thoroughly plateauing at the moment.

@FiftynFooked I have mornings of nausea and general grossness too... Black coffee is definitely a bad idea when I feel like that, sadly!! But herbal tea or even plain hot water can help. I try to avoid painkillers unless absolutely necessary, but if I have to take them with some food then so be it. Sorry, not much help!

harriethoyle · 13/11/2023 09:36

2kg back on and SO MUCH leftover food to eat - I am doing IF today, proper fast tomorrow and trying to be virtuous on work course W/Th/Fri... this week might be a write off!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 14/11/2023 13:36

Planned FD today but scuppered by trip to A&E - I sliced my thumb open last night making dinner and this morning the cut was still deep and open. Not too long to get it seen to but no point going into the office once it was all sorted, so WFH instead. I did skip breakfast and didn't eat until midday, so a bit of IF I suppose. Should be in the office and on a FD tomorrow instead.

chillibear · 16/11/2023 14:51

Hope your thumb is OK @SydneyCarton

I'm sure the food was worth it though @harriethoyle and it will probably come off as fast as the last lot did!

Hope everyone else is doing well. I've not posted for a while as been trying to figure out this maintenance malarky without much success. If anyone is also trying to maintain, all tips appreciated!

SydneyCarton · 16/11/2023 15:21

Thanks @chillibear it has been literally glued back together and wrapped up. The dressing looked like a tiny cotton condom and I was trying so hard not to giggle as the nurse unrolled it over my thumb Grin. Managed a more or less FD yesterday, fasted for 20 hours and ate in a 4-hour window between 5.30 and 9.30.

We had an email come round today telling us that we're moving from 2 days a week in the office to 3, so I might use this as a means to up the FDs in the New Year, depending on what days I end up doing.

Not sure about maintenance - the last time I got to goal weight we went into lockdown a week later and all bets were off the table. I tend to lose on 2 FDs and sticking to TDEE for 3-4 days with 1-2 free days at the weekend. Would eating to TDEE work?

chillibear · 16/11/2023 16:01

At least you got a giggle and a decent FD out of it @SydneyCarton 😁

I had to do 3 FD to lose weight so going to try 2 FD, 1-2 "Free Days" and the rest TDEE and see how that goes. My TDEE is so low, I think I need to keep those FD to be able to have a day or two where can actually relax!

beststepforward · 19/11/2023 22:27

Hi all! I used to post as purple and lost baby weight when BCF was running the threads. Ever since she "left" I've not managed to keep it up 😕 is anyone in touch with BcF, I would love to dm her to ask her a couple of questions, she was a fountain of knowledge! @harriethoyle perhaps?

PersisFord · 20/11/2023 07:59

I too lost my baby weight with BCF threads.....but it is creeping on again after many years of solid maintenance. So today I will start again. Weigh in day is Thursday, I will post my calories every day, and I will start with a FD today.

Weighed myself this morning but it doesn't count. Busy at work today so hopefully no time to feel hungry, and I have soup and a protein yoghurt lined up for dinner.

Solidarity to the Monday faster!

harriethoyle · 20/11/2023 08:17

Morning all, @beststepforward I'm not in contact with BCF sadly, she was brilliant on these threads. Worth posting on here in case anyone else can help?

I'm fasting Tu/Weds this week and trying to take it easy this weekend after a properly full on few days just gone... back to 3FD next week because DH is away so it's much easier 🤞

OP posts:
beststepforward · 20/11/2023 10:14

There was definitely someone that was in contact with BCF... wonder who it was.

Thanks @harriethoyle

I'll post once I get myself sorted, need to crack on with some work now

PersisFord · 20/11/2023 16:51

Can I check what you guys use if b2b - do you do a 650 cal day? I haven't done one for ages but everything gets so messy with Christmas parties and things starting already, I might need to try.

Just broken my fast with a milky coffee.... feeling good so far.....

harriethoyle · 21/11/2023 15:00

Hello @PersisFord I do 1300 across a b2b - either 500 one day and 800 the next or a split between the two.

Anyone fasting with me today? Have had my sandwich but it's hard today!

OP posts:
PersisFord · 21/11/2023 15:47

@harriethoyle im fasting for my b2b....it is HARD today!!!

PersisFord · 21/11/2023 20:37

.....and my FD was abandoned as my DH was unexpectedly free and we went out for dinner!! So a lovely reason, and I will reschedule for tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 21/11/2023 21:18

Glad you enjoyed @PersisFord 🤗

Kitchen closing here on 679. Bit high for a single day but I'll take it. Back on Thursday for 2nd fd of the week!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 22/11/2023 11:18

Meant to do B2B yesterday and today but have switched around days in the office, so yesterday was a (rather high) FD coming in at around 800 (guessing high), today will be 16:8 as I'd already skipped breakfast by the time plans changed (roll on 12.30!) and then an FD on Thursday when I'm in the office.
