Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@Hohoholdthesherry what's the betting I don't lose a single ounce tomorrow morning!!

I've got my fingers crossed for you (at least the non-broken ones)! But funnily enough, if I weigh after a FD (I always weigh first thing), I often don't see a loss. I seem to drop a lot of water right after eating breakfast after a fast and so see the weight loss the second day post fast.

I'm not sure if I'm making any sense here - blame DDog for waking me up at 5 a.m.!

harriethoyle · 30/03/2023 18:56

I'm no good at delayed gratification @Hohoholdthesherry 🤣

Kitchen closing on 527. Happy with that!

Prosecco and crisps. And in an airport too. Oh the glamour! We go on holiday on Tuesday and I cannot wait to get to the airport! I will not be fasting, nor will I be being sensible. We haven’t been abroad in 4 years. It’s been a long wait for that airport drink!

In the mean time, operation starvation continues!

Good luck @harriethoyle on reaching your goal.

harriethoyle · 30/03/2023 19:32

@Onehappymam are you going somewhere exotic? Hope so!

@harriethoyle I think it was Kate moss who said that, easy when you are in you're still in your 20s and smoke, I was the same back in my 20s.

Kitchen closing at around 600 here, pleased with that as I haven't managed a third fast or even a mini for ages.

SydneyCarton · 30/03/2023 22:07

FD here for me and I think I’ve come in at about 400-ish, pizza and salad for dinner but hungry children pinched most of my pizza so I had a Tesco fake Twix to keep me from falling over. Really rather nice. Well done everyone 👏🏻

Hohoholdthesherry · 31/03/2023 05:28

Kitchen closed last night on 756 plus a clementine, so happy with that. The dog and a storm woke me up at 4 a.m., so made myself a lovely pepper and caper omelette at 5 a.m. 😝

Well done @harriethoyle @EatYourFive @SydneyCarton - sorry if I missed anyone and good luck to any Friday fasters (you have my undying admiration 😅)

EatYourFive · 31/03/2023 07:50

Well done @SydneyCarton and @Hohoholdthesherry and everyone else.
I feel a bit deflated this morning, 3 days of fasting and no weight lost, just back to my usual post-fast weight. May try three days again next week to see if it makes any difference.

harriethoyle · 31/03/2023 08:37

450g off leaving me 150g above target 🤪 and a REALLY heavy weekend ahead too! Grrrr... so same old 2kg probably back on by Monday! 🤣🙈

Oh well... it's a marathon not a sprint!

@EatYourFive could you have a properly strict reset to get yourself off your plateau? No booze for a week, intermittent fasting on nfd, 3 proper fd? It's so frustrating when you get stuck but I'll bet you'll have a sudden whoosh if you persevere...

Yesterday was a bit of a disaster for me. Played tennis without eating, so was very low in energy, and it wasn’t exactly my finest hour on court. Came home and had Greek yogurt with added protein powder. Still felt hungry. Didn’t have a proper dinner (mistake) but nibbled on crackers and cheese all evening, plus had 2 glasses of wine Blush. Up a pound this morning. Gggrrr! Won’t be doing that again. From now on FDs must be sedentary! Well done those who succeeded!

SydneyCarton · 31/03/2023 10:42

I have no idea of my weight at the moment as the scales need new batteries and I can't be bothered to go looking for them! Weirdly, despite eating very little yesterday I have managed to end up with an attack of the runs today, so no idea where that came from. Bit of a grim way to end the week, but at least school breaks up today and the endless round of activities stops for a bit.

@EatYourFive I think that's a good suggestion to have a strict week in the run up to Easter and see if it makes a difference. At least you are not gaining anything, frustrating as it must be.

Badlifeday · 31/03/2023 10:56

I'm on holiday now so hoping I can still fast - have people to meet for coffee/lunch so need to schedule my days carefully!
I'm still not losing what I need to, going mad on eating days. I'm hoping the spring will help me do some more exercise.
Fast day for me - good luck to any fellow fasters!!

Badlifeday · 31/03/2023 10:57

@SydneyCarton I do hope your tummy is better today!

Onehappymam · 31/03/2023 16:52

We’re going to the Canaries. Hoping for some much needed r & r, or as much r & r as four kids will allow!

Today’s FD is going well. Only water so far and it’s almost 5pm.

Onehappymam · 31/03/2023 17:10

Although I’m freezing cold and hungry, hungry, hungry!

EatYourFive · 31/03/2023 21:34

Good work @Onehappymam, I'm very impressed!

Thanks for the advise @harriethoyle and @SydneyCarton.

I am on my third glass of wine today, had an awful day today with lots of unexpected stress, things like a big leak with bathroom plumbing and other stuff, of course all that happens just before we are expecting some overseas house guests for Easter. 🙄All resolved now but have lots of cleaning and other stuff to do before the guests arrive so think will just aim to maintain my weight now for the next three weeks (house guests followed by a work trip). I will really start tackling this plateau with my weight loss after that, hopefully by then the weather is better too so can properly take up running again as well - no more bad weather excuses!!

Onehappymam · 01/04/2023 08:08

Sounds like a tough day @EatYourFive. Hopefully you’re able to find a bit of time for yourself amidst the Easter chaos!

I went out for a run last week and it was grim: freezing cold with the wind battering my face. A little bit of sunshine will make everything so much easier.

Weighed in today at my all time lowest - hooray!

Onehappymam · 02/04/2023 07:39

Star I did it! Star

As of this morning I have reached my target weight. I have lost a total of 3 stone and 19 cm from my waist.

Whoop, whoop, whoop!

TeaRose29 · 02/04/2023 10:24

Well done @Onehappymam that’s amazing. Did you do it mainly with fasting?

Onehappymam · 02/04/2023 13:46

I first started fasting 8 years ago. Initially I lost 2.9lbs. Over the years my weight varied by about a stone, but after the pandemic and hitting 40, the weight crept up and up until eventually I gained it back plus a few pounds.

As well as fasting, I’ve overhauled my diet: more protein, more fibre, less carbs, less alcohol. I use nutracheck to keep track. I also ramped up my activity: more daily steps, more workouts (I don’t have time or childcare for classes, so I do 20 min workouts at home). It’s taken me 14 months to lose 3 stone. I’ve also lost 19cm from my waist.

There’s been many ups and downs along the way… holidays, weekends away. I haven’t been a saint, but and steady wins the race!

harriethoyle · 02/04/2023 20:32

@Onehappymam that is fantastic!! You've just inspired me with the new thread title...

Hello 👋🏻
De-lurking to ask a question. I’m an intermittent 5:2-er, and always find that my anxiety is quelled on/after fast days. I believe there is some evidence that fasting can decrease anxiety, but just wondered if anyone else experienced this?

thatsahardno · 09/05/2023 18:28

Oops! Ignore, I shall post on the new thread 😁
