Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Here for FD2 and feeling relatively strong! In the office today son won't be able to snack.
Good luck @absolutelyknackeredcow and @sweetgingercat and anyone else, we can do this!!

SydneyCarton · 21/03/2023 12:13

Snap @EatYourFive in the office here too for a temptation-free FD. I have been grazing and snacking too much recently, overcompensating for giving up crisps by diving into the biscuit tin, and telling myself that peanuts and Bombay mix aren't technically crisps so they're OK Hmm I also don't think I'm drinking enough, and tea probably doesn't count.

Onehappymam · 21/03/2023 14:25

Aww thanks @mumlikeaboss when I first started I went all the way back to thread 1 and read from there! Think I joined on thread 42 or something like that.

@Breadandwine2 That clip certainly is good for thought. I love that there are so many health benefits to fasting. Had a go at hovering today and I can get about 1-2 cm off the ground. Will stick at it!

FD for me today!

Badlifeday · 21/03/2023 16:20

First fast day in a week now my cold is gone. Hard to get back into it! But getting there

Onehappymam · 21/03/2023 16:57

Good luck @Badlifeday! Glad to hear your cold is better.

I have a kettlebells class tonight and didn’t fancy it on an empty stomach, so had an early dinner of chickpea, chicken and chorizo stew. Also 1 wine gum that jumped into my mouth! 420 cals all in.

I’m the opposite @EatYourFive and @SydneyCarton - I can go all day ant home and feel hungry at all, but when I’m at work I’m starving! That’s just reminded me… I have 2 packs of Cream Eggs in my drawer. I really need to give those away…

EatYourFive · 21/03/2023 19:44

How did you all get on today? Kitchen here closed somewhere around 600-650, considering a mini on Thursday as my weight loss has plateaued.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/03/2023 20:12

Some great fasts on here. Well done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I'm closing out at 450 which is not bad for day 2 b2b.
Planning 2 calories tracked days and a fast day Friday

SydneyCarton · 21/03/2023 21:26

DD2 did very well at swimming this evening so DP said she could choose dinner as a treat, and she chose Five Guys … So today ended up as a mini. WFH tomorrow with a bunch of back to back meetings so not much opportunity for snacking, then another FD on Thursday in the office. Well done Tuesday fasters!

sweetgingercat · 21/03/2023 21:34

Kitchen closed on 712 today 1,280 for both days which I’m happy with. Well done everyone, good fast days!

My ear’s are still ringing and I’ve got some medicine from the doctor but still not swimming which is a pain…

sweetgingercat · 21/03/2023 21:36

@SydneyCarton Five guys is very popular in this house and whenever it’s mentioned I kind of dread it!

harriethoyle · 22/03/2023 08:12

Excellent fasting yesterday gang. I'm attempting a WFH b2b today and tomorrow... not sure I will manage it but I'm going to do my best! Anyone with me? Today is a tuna thin and Aldi spinach canneloni (excellent bang for your buck at 383 cals and genuinely delicious) .

Also - PSA co-op have Itsu pots which are c. 200 cals on special offer at the moment: £1 each. I've got a couple to try and if they're good I'll keep some in the desk drawer for when I fancy a change from the usual tuna thin!

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 22/03/2023 11:14

Go for it @harriethoyle , have a great day and I'll meet you for a fast here tomorrow! Like the sound of those Itsu pots! I'm a smoked fish salad girl but could be persuaded!

harriethoyle · 22/03/2023 13:30

Had an Itsu pot for lunch - rice noodles katsu, 191 calories and very nice. Bit mean on the broth so I added some more water, and some soy sauce and I feel replete after it. Would recommend!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 22/03/2023 14:27

@harriethoyle DP often has those Itsu pots as a snack and puts cooked king prawns in for a protein hit.

@sweetgingercat The Five Guys chips are really good, but I find the hamburger quite dry with the two thick patties. I usually try to get the little burger which is a bit more manageable. DD2 only really likes it for the milkshake (peanut butter and Oreo), she barely touches the burger!

harriethoyle · 22/03/2023 19:10

Kitchen closing on 574. WFH fasting is hard!!

Back for day 2 tomorrow, see you then @sweetgingercat 👍

harriethoyle · 23/03/2023 12:50

I am struggling today... WFH b2bs are really challenging! I woke up this morning, without wanting to be overdramatic, feeling a bit weak and shaky with hunger...! So I had a piece of toast at 7am, and another just now with tuna mayo for lunch. If I can hold off eating until tonight's salad, I'll come in around 800 calories which isn't disastrous for day 2 of a b2b but a bit more than I was hoping for. Argh!

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 23/03/2023 15:16

It’s weird how sometimes it just doesn’t work out and you feel crap and have to eat something. Happens to the best of us @harriethoyle

And 800 is not bad! So hang on in there! I’ve had an egg and some kimchi and I’ve got my salad ready for this evening… We can do it!

harriethoyle · 23/03/2023 17:53

@sweetgingercat I'm in the airport lounge NOT drinking wine and ignoring the cakes. This is a first...!!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 23/03/2023 19:04

Kitchen closing on 803 which, frankly, feels heroic 🤣 how did you get on @sweetgingercat ?

You have a will of steel!

Onehappymam · 24/03/2023 07:50

I do love an airport lounge! I cannot believe you did not give in to temptation @harriethoyle! What a saint.

FD for me today. It’s my TOTM and I feel a bit bleurgh, but I’ll feel better with a successful FD under my belt I’m sure!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/03/2023 08:51

Well done @harriethoyle for yesterday
Doing my third of week - pretty grumpy about it tbh
Also watching what I eat on NFD. It's working ahead of my big event but I'm so bored

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/03/2023 08:51

Joining you @Onehappymam

Onehappymam · 24/03/2023 11:37

Good luck @absolutelyknackeredcow! I feel your pain. We go on holiday in just over a week. I’m (supposed to be!) pulling out all the stops to reach my target before then. It’s tough. Especially when all I want to do is eat biscuits!

sweetgingercat · 24/03/2023 12:42

I absolutely agree, sitting in the airport lounge and not eating the cookies is heroic @harriethoyle… well done.

I was out shopping last night for ski goggles and I did my usual fish salad, except my Dear h nicked some salmon off my plate which is very annoying as it’s all weighed out, wrapped into balls and frozen so I know how much I’m eating! So not sure what the final tally would be but under 500.

good luck today everyone who is fasting!
