Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I've not been fasting his week as I've had a nasty cold and I just can't do it when I'm sick - unfortunately that's an excuse for me to hoover up the kitchen so I will have gained a lot!

harriethoyle · 20/03/2023 07:47

Get well soon @Badlifeday DH is just going down with that cold so I'm probably going to get it soon...

Anyone with me today? Doing M/W/Th this week...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 20/03/2023 07:48

Whose joining for a b2b
Three fasts this week and next as I'm preparing for a big event in under 2 weeks

absolutelyknackeredcow · 20/03/2023 07:48

I'm joining @harriethoyle

EatYourFive · 20/03/2023 07:50

Good morning, anyone want to join me for a Monday fast? No weight loss now for a while, just keep losing and gaining the same 2-2.5 kg every week, but still coming up with excuses not to exercise (a bit of cold last week), really need to find some motivation!
Maybe a lunch time run today..

harriethoyle · 20/03/2023 08:25

@EatYourFive I think we're twins in this 🤣 last week I did 3 fd and a mini and I've only put 1.2 of the same kgs back on over the weekend so this might be the way forward until I've cracked the plateau...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 20/03/2023 08:29

Haha sounds like it @harriethoyle! I struggle to find motivation for both FD3 and exercising but clearly need to make some sort of changes...

Breadandwine2 · 20/03/2023 11:21

Don't know if you guys have seen this - 'One day fasting prolongs life'

sweetgingercat · 20/03/2023 11:37

I’m going to try today. I have some problem with my ears though and have been feeling a bit dizzy and sick so I’ll see how it goes today. Good luck everyone!

harriethoyle · 20/03/2023 11:39

@EatYourFive FD3 is tortuous but I do feel smug when I get them done...!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 20/03/2023 13:40

@harriethoyle I can imagine! I usually plan to do three FDs at the beginning of the week but fail to execute my plan every single time. There has been a couple of times when I have made it to lunch time on a Thursday (FD3) but then come up with some excuse to give up (slight headache, too much work, bit of a sore throat.. ANY excuse will do!!)

harriethoyle · 20/03/2023 14:33

@EatYourFive do you think reframing FD3 as an intermittent fast day would help? So just skip breakfast? Once you're in the swing of that you might find it easier to do a full FD...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 20/03/2023 15:34

@harriethoyle might try that, seems a bit less harsh than full FD! Clearly something needs to change or I will be losing and gaining the same two kilos for the rest of my days!

How has today been for everyone? I have managed to stop myself from snacking so will be having fishcake and veg for dinner, can't wait!

sweetgingercat · 20/03/2023 15:55

Yes I’ve managed to restrict myself to fish and a cup of miso. That usually sends my hunger away for the rest of the day…

harriethoyle · 20/03/2023 16:17

I've been fricking starving all day but on the home straight now. Also having fish and veg for supper 👍

absolutelyknackeredcow · 20/03/2023 19:06

Good fast day - circa 600
Everyone seemed to do so well. Who is joining tomorrow ?

EatYourFive · 20/03/2023 19:19

Well done @absolutelyknackeredcow, also done here at 612, I'm good with that. Back tomorrow for FD2.

harriethoyle · 20/03/2023 19:23

Kitchen closing on 540. Back on Weds for a b2b. See you then!

Cherrysherbet · 20/03/2023 19:59

Hi all, it’s my first FD today in a long time!

I lost 2.5 stone in 2016 and kept it off for three years using 5:2 fasting.
I started new job, and my routine changed. I stopped fasting, then gain the weight back over time.

It’s the only lifestyle that has ever to helped me to lose weight and keep it off for a decent amount of time. When I got into it before, I found it very empowering.

My first fast has gone really well. Finished on 550, which I’m happy with.

looking forward to getting back into the swing of this fabulous lifestyle.

Have a good night everyone.

mumlikeaboss · 20/03/2023 20:09

Ooh, starry-eyed seeing the old-timers pop up!! 🤩 I've dipped into quite a few of the old threads and remember Mazzle Dazzle and Breadandwine! I LOVE that people are still doing this years down the line.

mumlikeaboss · 20/03/2023 20:11

Welcome @Cherrysherbet 🤗

I'm an intermittent 5:2-er 😅 because I quite often revert to daily eating windows instead of down days, depending on what's happening in my life! But I like to keep up with the thread when I can. Xx

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/03/2023 08:12

Welcome back to all the old timers
@EatYourFive - feeling strong for my b2b. How are you doing ?

sweetgingercat · 21/03/2023 08:39

Kitchen closed on 568 yesterday. Still feeling dizzy but with you today @absolutelyknackeredcow and anyone else

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/03/2023 08:58

Go go@sweetgingercat

TeaRose29 · 21/03/2023 09:12

Weight was back up to 10.4 on Monday after the anticipated curry on Saturday. Spent the day in Edinburgh yesterday. Walked 15,000 steps and had a burger at lunchtime (only ate 1/4 of the bun), so it was effectively an OMAD day. Back down to 10.3 1/2 today, so really pleased. Lots of tennis today so can’t really fast, but planning to keep below 1,350 calories.

I really seem to lose weight more effortlessly on the days when my main meal is earlier in the day. Anyone else notice this?

Good luck to anyone fasting today!
