Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Anyone joining me for a Friday Fast?

Anyone...?

Oh okay, just me then! 😁

EatYourFive · 16/09/2022 08:01

Nope not me! Enjoying my breakfast after having reached new record low weight this morning. Work lunch and work drinks tonight so this achievement will be undone in no time.😁

Good luck today @mumlikeaboss!

Badlifeday · 16/09/2022 08:16

Congrats, @EatYourFive that is a great achievement! Enjoy your food today.
@mumlikeaboss I'm with you today Smile

Hooray @EatYourFive that's awesome. I'm dying to see a new low, have been stuck here maintaining for nearly a year now 😱

@Badlifeday how's your day going? I'm flagging - made the mistake of collecting a huge food order this afternoon, including a box of fresh croissants which smell divine 😖

Be silly to give up now I've got this far... Hope I can make it a few more hours 🤞🏻

mumlikeaboss · 16/09/2022 18:32

I succombed to croissants!!! 🙊

Forgive me everybody 🤣 and enjoy your Bank Holiday weekends... I'll see you back here next week x

Badlifeday · 16/09/2022 19:31

Noooo!!!!!
well just one croissant (or two) won't make much difference Smile

absolutelyknackeredcow · 16/09/2022 22:24

Checking in
Third FD of the week!
Congrats @EatYourFive 🥂🥂🥂

mumlikeaboss · 17/09/2022 07:28

@Badlifeday if only I'd stopped at the croissants!!! 😂

No it wasn't too bad... Well under TDEE and within a 90-minute window so a really good OMAD instead 👍🏻

Had a very full-on day yesterday, woke up this morning exhausted and brewing a monster cold so I'm not sorry I had to eat.

mumlikeaboss · 17/09/2022 07:28

@absolutelyknackeredcow well done for 3 FDs 🤩🤩

Badlifeday · 17/09/2022 08:06

Just filling in my weight loss tracker - I have lost 29 lbs since I started fasting in June. Need to lose the same again really. But I haven't lost more than a stone in years, I usually stall around then and put it back on.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 17/09/2022 08:33

Wow badlifeday, that’s brilliant! Keep going.

turnaroundtouchtheground · 17/09/2022 08:51

Hello

I am on my 2nd week of 5:2 and lost 2.5lb so far, absolutely loving it! Finally feels like something I can sustain! Im not strictly calorie counting on the fast days either but sticking to a bowl of low cal soup as a late lunch and a normal but smallish dinner but with plenty of veg and low/no carbs. I drink tea with no sugar soya milk during the day as well because I can’t live without it! But I feel if I can’t do it my own way I won’t be able to do it.

I’ve got 2 stone to lose and I’m firmly within the peri menopause which has led to all this weight gain and unsuccessful efforts to shift it by way of every diet under the sun for the last few years. I feel different about this one though, not a diet but a strategy!

Ive discovered the back episodes of Kate Harrison’s 5:2 podcast on Spotify which really inspired me to give this a go. I did actually lose around 10lb doing 5:2 10 years ago (when I was one stone lighter than I am now 😱)

I love the freedom of not having to low carb or count calories on non fasting days. That stuff has literally sent me crazy over the past year. It’s more about common sense and moderation, both of which went out of the window because of all the obsessive focus on diets and macros.

How have you all found this long term? Is anyone now maintaining on 6:1?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 19/09/2022 16:08

I'm fasting today - anyone else ?

harriethoyle · 20/09/2022 09:30

Morning everyone. Checking in for day 1 of a b2b. Anyone with me?

OP posts:
Badlifeday · 20/09/2022 10:44

I'm in. Not a b2b though! Sorry you were on your own yesterday, @absolutelyknackeredcow hope you made it.

mumlikeaboss · 20/09/2022 12:15

I'll join you tomorrow @harriethoyle

Have done OMAD yesterday and today, TOTM cramps from hell so didn't feel like pushing a full fast 🤢🤢 but should be feeling a bit more like it tomorrow!

SydneyCarton · 20/09/2022 12:33

Planning on my first FD in ages for tomorrow - have really got out of schedule with DS doing half days at school so two sets of pick ups, and not going into the office last week, but hopefully back on track now. Haven't weighed myself for a few weeks but I do feel a bit podgier Blush. Did 16:8 today so finished dinner at 7.30 last night and will break my fast around 2 - I have an annoying 12.45 to 1.30 meeting which tends to bugger up preparing and eating lunch Hmm

harriethoyle · 20/09/2022 12:56

How are you getting on @Badlifeday ? I've been busy which I always finds makes it easier.

@SydneyCarton I've also found the changes in routine and the bank hol etc have really got me out of whack. Aiming for b2b and a mini this week then back to normal routine tomorrow...

@mumlikeaboss see you tomorrow!

Badlifeday · 20/09/2022 13:29

I ate so much yesterday, I really need a fast day today! Going to try to go swimming this evening to use up a bit more energy.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 20/09/2022 19:17

I did and just closing up on a b2b - 600 each day

harriethoyle · 20/09/2022 20:39

Well done @absolutelyknackeredcow !

Kitchen closing on 665, back tomorrow for round 2. Feeling strong!
