Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Thanks all - I felt pretty damn heroic! I sat in the very further corner from the delicious snacks and averted my gaze... might have to do the same next Thursday depending on how Mon-Weds goes. Howl!!

Sourdough toast this morning was worth the wait though. On spirits and diet mixer tonight rather than the usual wine to try and save a few cals and resisted the reduced price mini eggs chocolate in Tescos too. Am practically a saint!!

@harriethoyle 😇😇😇😇😇
@Onehappymam - I have promised myself two weeks off after this event over Easter so I know I will gorge myself on chocolate and it will be worth it to feel good. Just so hard getting there

Onehappymam · 24/03/2023 17:49

I have a long drive tonight with the kids, which will probably involve a McD’s at some point. Although I’m not a massive McD’s fan, going there on a FD on an empty stomach didn’t seem like a good idea, so I had my FD meal before we set off.

I was sitting at 496 cals, but had a skinny hazelnut latte, so now I’m closer to 650.

Kitchen door is firmly closed now though!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/03/2023 19:22

Well done @Onehappymam
I'm closed on 470 and have done a lot of walking today so pretty happy with myself

Onehappymam · 25/03/2023 14:34

That’s impressive @absolutelyknackeredcow. Well done!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/03/2023 07:55

Whose joining for a b2b? Final stretch ahead of my big event so doing three FDs this week plus no carbs after six on NFDs. I feel like it's do
Able as it's only six days.
I'm on antibiotics so had to have an emergency banana this am to coat the stomach but then planning usual FD diet of cup a soup followed by a whole carton of low cal soup

harriethoyle · 27/03/2023 07:56

Morning fasters! I'm here for a b2b today and tomorrow and possibly a fd on Thursday although it might just be a mini... we'll see!

Anyone joining me? 💪

sweetgingercat · 27/03/2023 09:11

Yes I’m here on a b2b but still feeling crap with my buzzing ear…So I will need to find some determination from somewhere…

TeaRose29 · 27/03/2023 10:24

I’m in! Definitely a FD today. Not sure about tomorrow because I always play a lot of tennis on Tuesdays. Today I plan just to watch it on the TV 😬. Trying to think what I’ve got in the house to eat.

EatYourFive · 27/03/2023 10:55

Good morning I am also here for B2B! No weight lost again last week but didn't manage 3rd fast day or even a mini, maybe this week. Also it's finally sunny here so gonna go for a lunch time run, reallyhave no excuse not to!!!

harriethoyle · 27/03/2023 11:15

@sweetgingercat have you managed to see the doctors about your ear? that sounds horrible...

@TeaRose29 @EatYourFive we got this! I know what you mean about the sunshine removing exercise excuses 😆I find it very difficult to exercise on a FD and impossible on day 2 of a b2b, I feel all wobbly and pathetic!

Hohoholdthesherry · 27/03/2023 12:06

Hello all, FD for me today after a poor week with no fasts last week. Ddog is poorly and has been needing two hour toilet breaks, so I was finding it tricky to fast when I'd been up since 4 a.m.

Trying to push past the excuses this week though, so should be a Monday and Thursday fast. Got past my lunchbreak today by doing a FitnessBlender video (it's snowing here) and have a meeting at 2 p.m. so once I get to 3 p.m. I should be able to hold out until 5.30 when DH is doing fish and veg for tea.

Hohoholdthesherry · 27/03/2023 16:08

OK, only 23 minutes from dinner - I can do this 😂

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/03/2023 18:49

Hanging out for my dinner too
Hasn't been too bad but mainly because I have been properly swamped at work

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/03/2023 18:49

We can do it
👏🏻

harriethoyle · 27/03/2023 19:12

@absolutelyknackeredcow @EatYourFive @Hohoholdthesherry @TeaRose29 @sweetgingercat how did you all get on?

Kitchen closing here on 598. Happy with that!

OP posts:
Hohoholdthesherry · 27/03/2023 19:35

540 and done. Phew 😅Well done @harriethoyle and I hope everyone else finished well

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/03/2023 20:13

Im on 498 but might sneak at Rich tea in.
Feeling angelic 😇

EatYourFive · 27/03/2023 20:39

Excellent work everyone!!
Kitchen closed at 600 here which is very good for a WFH day, also managed a wee 3km run at lunch time so pleased with myself, not done any running for ages.
Hopefully will see most of you here again tomorrow for Day 2?

TeaRose29 · 27/03/2023 21:56

Closed at about 800, so pleased with that. Had all the wrong things though - I don’t do well on carbs, and try to stick to keto/high protein, but I didn’t have much in the house. I’m afraid it was a case of not planning to fail, but failing to plan! I’m going to do a Tesco shop tomorrow and stock up. Well done everyone!

sweetgingercat · 28/03/2023 01:29

So late finishing, but kitchen closed at 532 tonight which gives me some wriggle room tomorrow. Well done everyone. See you back tomorrow!

@harriethoyle I did go to the doctors, she had a look, said she couldn't see anything but it was probably an infection and gave me some drops. Fortunately the dizziness has now gone and the buzzing is getting quieter. I'm hoping it will all be gone by the time I go away at the end of the week!

harriethoyle · 28/03/2023 08:05

I had a ryvita based snaccident just before bed so up to 670 for yesterday 😬have adjusted tonight's planned tea to make up for it!

Who else is joining me @sweetgingercat and @EatYourFive ? Any other b2bers?

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 28/03/2023 08:07

@TeaRose29 we just found a DELICIOUS Argentinian malbec on special at Tesco. Called Trivento - down to 6.50 with club card and if you buy 6 bottles, you get a further 25% off so ends up c.4.80 a bottle. DH picking up 12 today ahead of Easter 🤣🤣

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 28/03/2023 09:15

Yep I am here for day2 today, feeling strong!
Also wondering now if I should pop over to Tesco's later for that malbec @harriethoyle, I love Malbec as it is!! Although usually anything on sale sells out quickly..

harriethoyle · 28/03/2023 09:19

Really worth it @EatYourFive - it's delicious and great value if you bulk buy. Obviously I'm just being a good housewife by saving us money in this way. So selfless 😆
