Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

mumlikeaboss well done

Hohoholdthesherry · 16/03/2023 09:56

Hello, hello, I'm on a mini fast before our anniversary dinner @harriethoyle if that counts as being part of the club today (I do have to make it to 7.30 p.m.)!

Breadandwine2 · 16/03/2023 10:04

Hi folks
I was a founder member of the original 5:2 fasting threads, back in August 2012, just after Michael Mosley's Horizon programme.
I was just Breadandwine then, but that name appears to have been taken!😄
The driving force behind the threads was BigChocFrenzy, I remember.
I lost 24lbs on the programme and I've been maintaining a healthy weight ever since - which I could never do prior to 5:2.
There are many benefits to intermittent fasting apart from weight loss, so I now have a weekly water only fast of 24hrs. I've just come to the end of one - at 8.55 this morning. I could have something to eat now, but I'm just not hungry. I may well wait until lunchtime. So I've only had a mug of coffee.
I remember these threads with great affection - we had a lot of fun, and a lot of people lost a lot of weight. Glad to see it still continues! 💚❤️💚

Hohoholdthesherry · 16/03/2023 10:05

Well done @summersanchez on getting back on it - that's the same for me, it had been a while, but it's only been a few weeks and I really feel back in the swing of things again. Good luck for today!

@mumlikeaboss well done on your B2B!

@EatYourFive good luck - I'd definitely rather fast than experience that again 😆

@TeaRose29 I hope the B2B is going well

Hohoholdthesherry · 16/03/2023 10:10

Wow, @Breadandwine2, thanks for swinging by! That's so amazing that you did so well and are continuing to keep it off after so many years, that's so encouraging. I've seen lots of naysayers about it being unsustainable, it won't work long-term, etc. etc., so it so good to here the reverse.

harriethoyle · 16/03/2023 13:13

@Hohoholdthesherry definitely counts - minis are hard too!!

@Breadandwine2 fab to see you back. I miss Big Choc Frenzy she was ace and so inspirational on my early threads

Thanks, Harriet.

"I miss Big Choc Frenzy she was ace and so inspirational on my early threads"

She certainly was! She was a great IF - and exercise - advocate.

I'll pop back on later, when I've more time, and give an update on what I've been up to for the past few years.🙂

summersanchez · 16/03/2023 16:14

What a lovely group
Well done everyone
My niece sent me some sweeties by post so I have NOT been fasting OR eating "responsibly" today
I think I'll do a OMAD dinner tomorrow as I have a busy enough day to cope with that
DH keeps making bread which is obviously a problem

harriethoyle · 16/03/2023 19:42

Look forward to it @Breadandwine2 😁

I love bread @summersanchez my DH can take or leave it which I find incomprehensible!

Kitchen closing here on 541 happy with that for 3rd fd of the week 💪 Granola, yoghurt and honey for breakfast tomorrow. Can't wait...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 16/03/2023 22:17

Checking in - kitchen closed on about 600.
Not bad really

sweetgingercat · 17/03/2023 08:25

Well done everyone who fasted yesterday! I missed it as was on a family outing that involved delicious bad food likes scones. I’m on another Friday fast… Anyone else fasting today?

summersanchez · 17/03/2023 13:24

sweetgingercat I was going to have a 24 hour fast (so planning an early dinner around 6pm but nothing else
Just been for a swim and I'm hungry but I'll make some green tea and do some laundry (rock n roll)

harriethoyle · 17/03/2023 13:35

@sweetgingercat @summersanchez you're both heroes for doing a Friday fast. I NEVER manage them!

TeaRose29 · 17/03/2023 14:23

I did pretty well on Wednesday, at around 800 calories, but failed miserably yesterday - I was starving! Plus I played tennis in the afternoon, then walked into town to meet a friend to go to the cinema, and we went for a drink afterwards Blush. My weight has resolutely refused to budge from 10.4 1/2 for 10 days Confused. Trying again today and so far so good - haven't eaten anything yet, just been drinking tea with soya milk. Planning to have a slice of wholemeal toast and some tinned tuna at 3pm (41 minutes to go! 😬). Only problem is that DH wants to go to the pub tonight. I can probably stay below 800 calories if I just have a couple of Gin & Slims.

Perhaps I'm just not suited to B2Bs.

summersanchez · 17/03/2023 14:28

Good luck tearose

sweetgingercat · 17/03/2023 16:58

Good luck @TeaRose29 and @summersanchez Fridays are hard, but we can do it! I’ve had a bit of smoked fish and some kimchi so far and hopefully I’ll go swimming this evening too… got to feel a bit more healthy before I go away!

summersanchez · 17/03/2023 17:07

That sounds super healthy sweetgingercat
My dinner won't be healthy but it will be at the end of around 24 hours fasting
I need to plan my fasts next week and I'd like to do a 36 hour clean fast
Maybe also a couple of 24 hour fasts with a lighter dinner

Onehappymam · 17/03/2023 20:30

Welcome back @Breadandwine2! I signed up to these threads about 7 or 8 years ago, but then Big Choc was called BigChockFriendlyStoleMyReindeer. Grin I really miss BC and think of her often! I think my username was MazzleDazzle back then or something along those lines. I pop along occasionally to throw in the odd FD to keep things ticking along.

I remember you! Vegan? Press up champ? Am I right?

Onehappymam · 17/03/2023 20:31

Day 2 of b2b here. I’ve probably eaten a little more than I should, but did 3 workouts over the two days and 20K steps, so hopefully it evened itself out.

Hi @Onehappymam! Thanks - I remember the name Mazzledazzle. And you're right, I am vegan, and I'm still doing press ups. Up to about 550,000 now, on my way to 1 million before my 90th birthday. But now I've added ultra marathons to my exercise routine. I've done 8 so far, with 3 planned for this year - 106k round the Isle of Wight at the end of April is my next. Started running in lockdown, then I discovered ultras, and now my son and I are addicted! I realised late on in life that we can all do more than we think we can - much more. On the back of this I'm to be featured in a forthcoming film, 'I could never go vegan' - when one of the film's producers/cameramen accompanied me around the South West Coast 50 challenge last August. Keep your eyes peeled for it.
And how are you doing these days?

sweetgingercat · 17/03/2023 22:55

Well done @summersanchez a d @Onehappymam I did 520 calls today and feel happy with that. But I didn’t swim, so I’ll do that tomorrow.

Doing a clean fast is a bit too hardcore for a wuss like me, so Kudos to you!

Onehappymam · 17/03/2023 23:37

Wow! So impressive B&W. What an inspiration. Big Choc would be so proud.

In 2015 I lost 2 stone 9 lbs. I’ve kept 2 stone 2lbs of it off, despite having another baby. I’m trying my hardest to shake off that extra few pounds before the summer.

I am in awe at your press-ups. Mine are shocking! I am stronger than ever. Technically I should be able to do them. But I just can’t! Mastering a full press up before the summer holidays is one of my targets. Heaven help me!

TeaRose29 · 18/03/2023 11:23

Phew! Finished on about 900 yesterday, as we went to the pub in the evening and I had two glasses of wine and a small packet of peanuts as my “dinner” Blush. I didn’t find yesterday hard at all - I think having a lot of protein helped. Weighed myself as usual this morning and I have FINALLY got off my plateau and dropped to 10.3 1/2. This is the lowest I’ve been for at least a year, so really pleased. I’m not officially fasting today, but I’m going to IF and see how long I can go before I really need to eat (yesterday it was 3pm). As it’s Saturday, I suspect that DH will be hankering for either a Chinese or a curry for dinner tonight …..Confused

Hello @Breadandwine2 , you sound amazing! Please let us know when the film is coming on. Off subject, but I went to see Fashion Reimagined on Wednesday evening. Very interesting and some shocking facts about the impact of the fashion industry on the environment. At least I have an entire wardrobe of slightly-too-small clothes waiting for me, so there will be no need to buy anything new when I’ve dropped these last few pounds! 😊

It was BC who got me into press ups in the first place. I could get into position, but I found I was unable to lower myself. She told me to lie on the floor, with my hands on either side of my head, about a shoulder width apart, then lift myself up. I could only manage a few centimetres at first, but gradually I got into it - and I've never looked back. 🙂

Thanks, @Hohoholdthesherry. Yeah, IF has been of real benefit to me. I'm vegan, so if there's nothing suitable for me to eat, I just go into fasting mode. Doesn't happen so much these days, but it still does on occasion.
I got into it after reading that IF helps drive down IGF-1, which is a cancer causing hormone in adults, and helps prevent prostate cancer. Didn't think I had any weight to lose at that time, but the weight just fell away, and after a while I no longer had middle-age spread, which I had thought was normal.
