Hi I fell off the wagon as I felt so queasy and nauseous for a couple of weeks, but started again from yesterday so fingers crossed. Hope you're all well.

Sunshineandflipflops · 16/02/2022 11:12

Good luck @ChinOfThanos - maybe your body will be more used to it this time around but it might be that fasting just isn't for you. I know the one time I tried the 5:2 fast diet, I felt too queasy too.

I have been noticing some non-scale victories recently with clothes, which is spurring me on. Yesterday, I bought some leather-look jeans which I never thought I'd wear at 43 but I tried on the only pair they had, which were a size 12 (and I have been a good 14 for a while) and they fit and didn't look hideous! Ok, they have a little stretch in them but still...

Over 6 weeks in now and IF is becoming more 'normal' for me. SOme days I might slightly go over the 8 hour eating window and others I'll have a 5 or 6 hour window so not being too strict as I still want to enjoy life.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

twinkydink · 17/02/2022 15:39

Good luck @ChinOfThanos well done for listening to your body

I've been a bit lax the last few days as we were away but I dont think I completely fell off the wagon. 18:6 was working well for me but I'm learning not to consider it a failure if a couple of days a weeks I do 16:8 instead. It's still not falling back into my old bad habits!

Great work on the non scale victories @Sunshineandflipflops leather look leggings are one of my goals. I'm hoping to try some on in a couple of weeks!

Hi all. I've been doing this for three weeks, and gradually shifting from 16:8 to 17:7. Lost nearly two pounds this week, after nothing much changing at first.

I have already lost a lot of weight on a med style, moderately low carb diet and was hoping intermittent fasting would help me reduce my current set point, which is still a stone above healthy.

I am reading Gin Stephens' Fast Feast Repeat, and agree it's an easy read, if a little irritating in places, and far too many apostrophes!!!!

Does anyone have any other recommendations? (I've read Michael Mosley too.)

Any good recipes to share, especially for breaking fast?

Thanks.

Llamasally · 19/02/2022 13:38

Can anyone tell me their success stories doing 16:8 and not changing anything else about their diet?? Ie not also calorie counting, low carb or generally watching what you eat?

Words · 20/02/2022 06:50

Hi Llama thé Gin Stephens book might help.

The idea is to eat healthily within the window, so avoid sugary and ultra processed food and possibly also alcohol to avoid spiking your blood sugar or setting up addictive patterns with unhealthy foods.

lu9months · 21/02/2022 08:37

hi all im on week 3 of 18:6/17:7 and feeling good but not lost any weight. i read gin stevens book where she says for 1st 4 weeks dont expect any weight loss just get used to it, but im a bit disheartened. i dont have much to loose, just a few kg, so dont expect it to be quick. but id love to hear any success stories where initially there was no weight loss but then it started to shift?

CaveMum · 21/02/2022 14:46

Hi all, I’m a lurker! I started IF in July 2020 to shed my lockdown lbs and managed to shift a stone in 6 weeks which was amazing. I’ve stuck with it ever since (bar a few days a month or if I’m not feeling well) but my issue is that I’m a “dirty” IFer - I don’t make the best food choices during my eating window and have a big sugar addiction Blush

I’ve preordered Cynthia Thurlow’s new book on IF for women (it was watching her YouTube videos that got me interested in IF) so I’m hoping that will give me the kick I need when it comes out in a few weeks.

twinkydink · 21/02/2022 22:33

Nice to see some new faces!

I've been doing it since 1st Jan and 10.5lbs down. Another 1.5 stone to go to get into the healthy bmi.

My snacking has crept back up the last 2 weeks - still within my window but it's definitely more than it had been. And I feel that he slowed my progress. Would have loved to have got to a stone by end of Feb!

Going to dip back in to fast feast repeat to keep me on track. I really enjoyed reading some of the testimonials.

@CaveMum I watched Cynthia Thurlow Ted talk and found hr very interesting so will keep an eye out for her book. I saw a course on her website she was doing that coat 5 Grand!!!! That did put me off her a little

Hi well it seems to be working for me. After a shaky start I've lost about four pounds in three weeks, and I am definitely losing fat. Did not expect to lose so much in the first month!

This is great news as I have been plateauing for many months after a four stone loss with just over a stone to go. I am now the lightest I have been for a very long time. I am hoping this has re set my weight set point lower.

Am finding it really suits me, and eat healthily within the window. It has curbed my usually incredibly healthy appetite - there are some useful tips in the Gin Stephens book about listening to your body- as well as my evening snacking habit, and I still have plenty of energy for my usual exercise - which I can comfortably do towards the end of my fast.

I also feel much more mentally focussed with improved memory, which, at 55 was really beginning to bother me.

I am also a regular on the Why We Eat Too Much threads, which helped me shed the weight so far.

CaveMum · 22/02/2022 12:06

I saw a course on her website she was doing that coat 5 Grand!!!! That did put me off her a little Eek @twinkydink I hadn't seen that! I've been sent a few "freebies" for pre-ordering the book, including a invite to a Zoom chat she's doing but seeing as it is at 7pm PST I shall be safely tucked up asleep at that time!

Rodedooda · 22/02/2022 15:25

I'm looking for some advice from any experienced IFers Grin

I've been doing 18:6 for a few weeks now, managing the fast ok but I'm finding I get really hungry about 3pm - right in the middle of my eating window. I eat something quick and easy as i'm working (today & yesterday was a hot cross bun!) And then I'm not particularly hungry come dinner time at around 5.30 (with the kids). I still eat dinner as I don't want to go through the night on just lunch and a mid afternoon snack.

Lunches are things like eggs, smoked mackrel, homemade soups. I also have things like rye bread and oatcakes, and usually finish with a piece of fruit. I don't feel hungry after, and it isn't any less than I would have in a 'normal' lunch.

Anyone else found this, and how did you cope with mid afternoon hunger just a couple hours after a decent protein lunch?

XenoBitch · 22/02/2022 22:49

Hi, I have been doing 16:8 so far this year and have lost a stone. I have 11lb to go and I will be in the overweight category instead of obese.
I am also doing the occasional extended fast (between 36-44 hours).

Words · 24/02/2022 06:33

Hi @Rodedooda . I am new to 16:8 so do bear that in mind but I am wondering whether your fruit is spiking insulin and causing hunger pangs? Is it a sweet tropical fruit? If so, maybe swap for berries instead and see how you go?

Words · 24/02/2022 06:34

Oh and the other thing is 18:6 a bit long? Maybe go back to 17 or 16 for a bit?

Rodedooda · 24/02/2022 09:14

Thanks words, yes I had full fat yoghurt with seeds and blueberries to finish my lunch and that made a difference!

It's clear with the there's no one size fits all, you just have to find what works for you.

Sunshineandflipflops · 24/02/2022 10:53

I’m not a saint in my eating window-I just eat what I usually would, such as a sandwich/fruit and a ‘normal’ dinner such as chilli and rice/spaghetti and meatballs, etc.

I have found that my appetite has reduced naturally. No idea on weight but I can definitely fit into clothes I couldn’t at the start of Jan.

I drank alcohol for the first time this year at the weekend as we went to see friends and I really noticed it the next day. I just wanted to eat crap and had a dominoes pizza.

It’s my eldest’s birthday today so my eating window is going to be way over 8 hours due to birthday pastries and a birthday curry later but I figure this is to fit in with my life, not the other way round so the odd day might not be perfect but it’s what I do most of the time that counts.

I have actually started naturally reducing my eating window most days to 6 ish hours, which I never thought I’d be doing!

Words · 25/02/2022 05:45

@rodedooda I think that's true- the more I read and the more I experience around healthy eating and weight loss - one size does not fit all!

It's very much a case of trial and error. We are all different, and the gut micro biome seems to have a bigger role to play than previously thought.

sparkleywallpaper · 06/03/2022 16:02

Hello all! I started 16...8 yesterday. I have done this once before for a short while and managed to lose 10lbs (sorry I only do 'old' money).
Like many others Covid happened and it piled back on plus more and I find my self with AT LEAST 1.5 stone to lose.
So starting weight is 11 stone which is very heavy for me as I am only 5'2''. I'm aiming for an initial loss of 1 stone.
Anyone out there still doing this? Hoping it will kick start the thread as I need support.

Words · 06/03/2022 17:32

I've been doing it a month and lost about three pounds so far. I feel great on it!

Rodedooda · 10/03/2022 10:11

I'm still here and plodding along slowly but surely. Finding it easy, love my lunches, not expecting fast results but already feeling my very wobbly mum tum is slightly less wobbly.

I try and do 18:6 most days.

sparkleywallpaper · 10/03/2022 16:17

@Words @Rodedooda Thanks for responses.
6th day for me and although no weight loss on scales(early days) I am already feeling a little healthier.

polkadotty2 · 11/03/2022 09:48

Hi everyone. New to the thread.
I’m on day 3 of 16:8. Already feel less.. bloated.

I’d like to lose about 5kg. My main concern is lower tummy pouch/fat. Does IF work to get rid of that?

Are you supposed to do 16:8 everyday or can take a break over the weekend etc?

Please can someone tell me what you can have in the 16hr fast other than water? (Paracetamol? Hot water with free drops of lime juice?)

If someone could explain the science or point me in the right direction for info that would be much appreciated too.

Sunshineandflipflops · 11/03/2022 13:09

@polkadotty2 You are not supposed to consume anything other than water or black tea/coffee ( i think herbal tea ok too - i like mint tea). Not sure about medication but I take mine daily in the morning with water as I have to. I'm sure that won't count.

In terms of taking a break, I guess the results will just be slower if you do that. The idea is that it is a way of life, not a diet so you eat like that all the time, but sometimes life happens! I went away for the weekend with friends so I wanted to be sociable and didn't do 16:8 for 2 days but I did plenty of activity so not going to beat myself up about it. I wouldn't take a break EVERY weekend though as I think I'd be too disappointed in results.

Also not sure about specific areas of fat loss as I think it's more exercise that targets specific areas, rather than diet.

Hello all. I have lost four and a half pounds in five and a half weeks. Very pleased!

I have noticed a definite decrease in my tummy flab. Belt tightening required!

I use Fastic ( the free version) and am now comfortably doing 18/6 every day. I want to try 19/5 but that might be a stretch to do regularly as well as a bit inconvenient.

I feel so much better, so much more mentally focussed. I have loads of water with a squeeze of lemon or lime, and lots black coffee. Then eat meals prepped from scratch, no processed foods and avoid sugar and wheat, following the Jenkinson plan ( med diet essentially)
