I’ve put on so much weight after lockdown started in March 2020 when food was the only interesting thing to happen in my day. I’ve had many false starts but today is the day I start IF! I’ve done it before, in the past and it’s the only one that works for me.

I’m looking for a good app - any recommendations? Thank you

hi all im on week 3 of 18:6/17:7 and feeling good but not lost any weight. i read gin stevens book where she says for 1st 4 weeks dont expect any weight loss just get used to it, but im a bit disheartened. i dont have much to loose, just a few kg, so dont expect it to be quick. but id love to hear any success stories where initially there was no weight loss but then it started to shift?

I know this comment is a few months old now but wanted to answer it in case it helps anyone :)

If you google "Intermittent Fasting Stories" podcast and listen to episode 50 it is super interesting. A mum and son combo - she started losing weight straight away and consistently, and he lost nothing for 8 months and then it suddenly started falling off!!

There are so many awesome health benefits to IF, and once your body adjusts to it it feels so good that that can help you stick with it even if you don't lose weight immediately.

mumlikeaboss · 10/07/2022 19:36

If anyone is really interested in the science behind fasting and how it is about so much more than just restricting how much you eat every day, check out Jason Fung's book The Obesity Code 👌

Patienceisntvirtuous · 24/08/2022 19:59

I am new to 16:8. Been doing it about 10 days now. It seems to be working, although I haven't weighed myself (I don't own scales) I feel slimmer and my middle area is flatter. Prior to this I was doing low carb- I was actually afraid I'd put weight on on 16:8!

I work nights normally. On my days off, is it okay to switch the times? Because I work nights I usually have my 8 hours from 1800 ish to 03:00 ish. Then I am alseep for a lot of the fast period. But if I get up early on a day off, would it be detrimental to switch it to say, 15:00-2300 or something similar?

I'm loving not being on low-carb. It's nice to eat more of a variety again and I feel so much better!

mumlikeaboss · 24/08/2022 22:56

@Patienceisntvirtuous i think that would be fine.

If you usually close your window around 3am, then on your day off you'll get a shorter fast because you'll be opening again after 12 hours at 3pm...

But then when you go back to your usual schedule, if you close at 11pm on your day off and don't open again until 6/7pm the next day then that might be a 20-ish hour fast. So it should balance itself out if that makes sense.

mumlikeaboss · 24/08/2022 22:57

PS I've also dabbled in low carb on and off, and I did find it brilliant for weight loss but adding the carbs back in alongside fasting feels so freeing!! All that meat and cheese gets pretty boring lol!

Mrsladybirdface · 25/08/2022 15:43

Thought I'd post my little inspirationish story as I started "fasting" inspired by this thread!
I started in April and I wouldn't say it was true 16:8 as my one rule is not to eat before 12pm and sometimes we don't get to eat dinner until late. I have gone from 10 stone down to 9 stone 1 today. Not massively loads but I'm only 5 foot 3 and so it looks more impressive and I feel great.

I found as soon as I ate breakfast (no matter what it was) I was then hungry for the rest of the morning, so by not eating until lunch I have cut out around 400kcal a day. My diet has remained the same, which I would describe as healthy, homemade carb heavy meals (pasta, curry dishes etc) and I have a very sweet tooth too!
I'm only losing 1-2lb a month but it is consistently coming off and it is no hardship!

I still drink tea with skimmed milk throughout the morning, so it really isn't true fasting.

I think if I put more effort into healthy eating it would be quicker! 2lbs to go until target.

mumlikeaboss · 25/08/2022 16:46

@Mrsladybirdface that's fabulous 👏🏻 so good to hear from people who have embraced it as an easy lifestyle tweak rather than just approaching it as a quick fix diet.

Mrsladybirdface · 25/08/2022 16:57

Yes, that's it a lifestyle tweak! I think as we get older (sob) and need less fuel we need to find a way that suits us.

mumlikeaboss · 25/08/2022 17:01

Yes absolutely. And skipping breakfast is somehow so much easier than restricting calories all day.

Patienceisntvirtuous · 27/08/2022 02:46

@mumlikeaboss thank you, that makes sense.
I'm a vegan. So being low-carb meant lots of UPFs (faux meat etc) I am sure I was ingesting far too much salt and additives. It feels great to be able to have a variety of food and grains again.

I really dislike this myth that breakfast is so important-zero science and perpetuated by people trying to sell cereal.

mumlikeaboss · 27/08/2022 08:35

@Patienceisntvirtuous wow yes, must be incredibly hard to eat 'real food' if you're if you're vegan and low carb!

The "having to eat first thing in the morning" thing is ridiculous isn't it. A load of nonsense when you look into it. What is important is what you choose to break your fast with - but that can be at 6pm...!

Patienceisntvirtuous · 04/09/2022 19:20

@mumlikeaboss it wasn't hard in that there are a lot of faux meats that are low carb, however it was very samey! I was living off salads with oil, seeds and some form of faux 'chicken' or 'sausage'. The occasional salsa and poppadums (surprisingly low carb) and barenaked noodles or stir fry. Before this I did 5:2 but I found that quite difficult although it definitely works!

I had my first 'day off' 16:8 yesterday. Family BBQ, which should be okay in theory but lots of booze and I left late (although not as late as some!) and was starving when I got in. Possibly just exacerbated by how tired I was even before the BBQ. I just thought sod it, I've not had a day off yet. Back on it today though. Have only just broken fast, which must be about 18.5 hours at least.

How is everyone else doing?

mumlikeaboss · 05/09/2022 09:14

@Patienceisntvirtuous still switching between 16:8 (ish) and longer 36-hour fasts 👍🏻

Managed to end the summer holidays at a similar weight to where I started them, so that's a huge achievement! 😁

Need to get back in the swing of losing now the kids are out of my hair...

feliznavidad2 · 07/09/2022 01:26

I'm coming back to this way of eating after starting the 2021 thread some time ago.

@Piglet89 kindly continued it as I couldn't as found out in late Oct '21 that I was pregnant with no. 2.

She's now ten weeks old hence I'm keen to get back to it. 😬 My waistline certainly is anyway.

Great to hear how it's worked for you @Mrsladybirdface 👍🏻

Piglet89 · 07/09/2022 08:51

Thanks @feliznavidad2 I have also been away from the thread for a while but looking forward to returning to it when I get back from hols in Sani resort later this week.

im SORT of fasting here as we have booked half board so I have nothing between enormous breakfast and dinner (and definitely don’t need anything!!!)

feliznavidad2 · 07/09/2022 10:44

Ooh enjoy @Piglet89 🌞

I'm slowly weaning myself back in.

Breaking fast after 12 hours 42 mins with a chopped up banana and peanut butter - big improvement on the rice crispies with sugar and two slices of white bread toast with copious amounts of butter... 😬 got leftover homemade chilli with a small amount of whole grain rice and veg for lunch and chicken thighs with something for dinner.
