Hi, is it ok to post to ask for some help? I spent last night crying over how bad things have got 79.4kg. I don’t think I know what I’m doing. Can I ask if my plaN sounds ok?
16.8 fasting
10000 steps a day (for now)
Fast800 with carbs under 50

Any help and tips I’d really appreciate! Anything else I should include in my plan?

NibbleQueen · 10/08/2020 07:33

9st9.6 this morning, so that's a loss of about 3lbs last week. Not as much as many of you, but the odd ice cream / percy pig has snuck in.

Lndnmummy I'm sorry to hear its getting to you. It must be hard to be making sacrifices and not feel like you're getting anywhere. Perhaps you could try adding HIIT and some weights? Have you taken measurements of yourself, as you may be losing inches rather than weight?

Kimlek · 10/08/2020 07:37

As you know I’m aiming to maintain. So @wrensandrobins & @ohthegoats and any others that have tried to maintain; where’s it gone wrong please? What do we need to be aware of?
Today I’ve reached my goal weight of 10st (64.5kg; 140lbs) but have been floating around a lb or 2 heavier for weeks now so consider myself to be maintaining. I’ve not calorie counted for months but sticking to BSD type foods (mostly) and TRE (mostly) and I weigh daily but ignore little fluctuations. I’m very interested to hear how others have or haven’t maintained.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 10/08/2020 07:40

Morning!!

Weigh in this morning at 9st 9lbs, so managed to lose the holiday pounds, although did have pizza last night and wine at a friend's birthday party.

Menu plan for this evening - Salmon/salad (rice for the family)

Kimlek · 10/08/2020 07:47

@Lndnmummy awww no! nibble’s advice is good. Up your water intake too. Also, I was listening to a podcast yesterday talking about when specifically women plateau and they were saying that ‘sometimes’ cutting back on the dairy and nuts for a bit helps kickstart. So most of your 800 cals coming from proteins & low carb veg/salad and not too much fat. The caveat was providing you are not ravenous. So, if your not hungry but not losing then cutting back a tadge on the fats can help. However, if you’re ravenous then you need to keep the fats up for satiety. I found this interesting as eat a lot of nuts and dairy & never hungry - so may go a long way to explain why my progress has been slower than others.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 10/08/2020 08:09

I've had another tiny gain overnight, that's two days in a row. I'm completely on plan. I don't get it. It can only be the heat!

wrensandrobins · 10/08/2020 08:52

Hi @Kimlek

I'm still about 2.5 stone overweight, still actually a pound into obese, I have managed to maintain this month but it will be so much easier for me to maintain this weight than your much lower one, I don't think I could be much help!

I am starting fresh 12 weeks, but i have just been reminded that a couple of weeks ago I booked a date night at a nice restaurant with my bf- there is zero that will work with this plan on the menu, so I think I will have as low a calorie day as possible to limit damage and then crack on with it again tomorrow-

Only thing is that this Saturday I am going to an all you can eat Chinese for my friends birthday- I am still starting, there is always something in the diary, it's two days, which means I have 5 other ones to limit the damage, and I am more likely to be careful if I don't want to screw the rest of my week up!

Just going for a run!

ohthegoats · 10/08/2020 09:12

have you kept that off or has it creeped on again

@Kimlek - on and then some. I finished the BSD in September 2016, then started to use Jow Wickes 'carbs after exercise' stuff to maintain. I was running 2 - 3 miles a day, with 3x a week weights classes by that point, and needed the carbs. Carried on losing slowly until January 2017, was happy with weight loss but wasn't near a healthy BMI. Then I got ill, which put me back a bit... then menopause arrived. Early and bigly! Cue 2 years of not knowing my body at all, not being mentally ok and so on. Went from 73kg to 96kg. I've been on HRT for 18 months now, and it's time to get the weight off.

Last time I wasnt hungry, this time I'm starving and thinking about food all the time. I need to get past 2 weeks before realky 'taking stock' in terms of whether it is feasible to continue. If another 5lbs comes off this week then maybe I'll start thinking it's worth it. Last time I didnt do 16:8 with it - just ate 3 small meals, so maybe I need to try that this week I just to keep me fuller all day.

Lndnmummy · 10/08/2020 09:50

Thanks for your lovely words. I wasn’t clear sorry! I’m starting a fresh today so just wanted advice to see if what I’d planned sounded ok? Well
Done everyone on your amazing results and for sticking with it.

ohthegoats · 10/08/2020 10:19

And to complete my annoyance, I'm up 2lbs this morning. FFS.

NibbleQueen · 10/08/2020 10:32

Lndnmummy yes sorry looking at your post again it is clear. But the same advice still holds true! Only thing I would add is to hold off drinking in the early days. It's tempting to have 'a' drink but for me it's never just one and the next day, even if I haven't had that much to drink, I always reach for carbs and sugar.

Congrats to everyone on their losses and especially to Kimlek for reaching goal, what an achievement!! Star

Interested in the maintenance thread as I'm hoping to be at goal in the next week or so. For me I think I'll keep the TRE (2 meals + snack a day) but will add back pulses and grains. I love eating them, they're nutritious, better for the planet, and help keep me regular now I'm not having my morning porridge! So I guess I'll be aiming for what used to be known as GI eating.

Also - thought from me - I think an important thing is how you eat when you're sodding the diet. I find I gain a lot of weight on holidays etc cos I eat loads and mostly the wrong things. I think trying to make better choices when you're not officially watching your weight is what helps break that cycle of feasting and dieting. So next time I'm on holiday I probably won't get an ice cream every single day!

3kidsareenough · 10/08/2020 10:38

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to say hello 👋 myself & DH have decided to bite the bullet and give this a go. DH is diabetic and got the okay last week from his specialist to start this diet. His blood sugars are uncontrollable at the moment and he's in a bit of a dangerous place so they said give it a try and he's back again for more blood test in 4 weeks time. We seriously need to have an over haul of lifestyle so we watched the Michael Mosley show last night and are ready to go 🤞 I have done 5:2 in the past, it was really successful but keeping the weight off proved to be so hard. I'm off now to have a read through the thread and recipes to get some inspiration ☺️

Lndnmummy · 10/08/2020 10:57

What is TRE?

NibbleQueen · 10/08/2020 10:59

Time restricted eating / intermittent fasting
Basically I don't eat anything in the morning until I have my lunch at midday

outwest · 10/08/2020 12:49

I'm completely on plan. I don't get it.

@WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa In the same boat here - most days for past week have been flat/slightly up, despite sticking to plan. Sometimes it just happens. In the end will surely start falling again (at least, that's been pattern so far...)

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 10/08/2020 12:54

I hope so @outwest. I'm taking comfort in continuing to enjoy this WOE, having lots of energy and not being bloated and grey. I just think I jinxed myself by saying I should get into a new stone bracket this week. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Kimlek · 10/08/2020 13:15

I really think this heat will be playing havoc with our weights! We are absolutely bound to have some water retention. Let’s keep going but ignore the scales somewhat? Maybe? I don’t think it’s good for our mindset.
TRE as nibble says it’s Time Restricted Eating. So you have an 8 hour window where you eat. It can be any 8 hour window. And like nibble I don’t eat bfast. My window is between 1pm & 9pm give or take an hour either way. It’s basically fasting for 16 hours (mostly overnight) everyday. Some people may have bfast & lunch but not dinner. Some mix it up but it’s a16hr fast and 8 hours eat (16:8). There’s lots of research suggesting that grazing all today isn't great. Others find this difficult and prefer the 5:2 method better - eating carefully five days and seriously reducing cals 2 days. Lots of options to find something that works for each individual or try something a bit new if bored or hit a plateau.

justanotherneighinparadise · 10/08/2020 13:24

For be fasting is the key to it working. I don’t know if it’s because I’m horribly insulin resistant but I find if I eat a lot of calories in one go and then fast for the rest of the day it’s much more successful than eating those same calories stretched out across 2/3 meals.

The maintenance question from earlier - I have a really similar timeline and story as goats. For a good year or 2 after stopping I was happy with how I looked in fact I continued getting compliments on weight loss even though it was creeping up on the flip side as I had got towards weight loss goal people were telling me I looked ill etc. Then the last year or so life had got in the way a bit and even more bad habits have crept back until I got to this point. I think some things I will do differently are taking vitamins and going a bit slower once I get out of obese category.

ohthegoats · 10/08/2020 15:30

I used 16:8 to not put on weight during lockdown. Partner and I decided that we wouldn't go on a health kick, because why make that mentally any harder, but we decided we should aim to not put ON any weight.

At the point I'd been doing 16:8 for 86 days, I got on the scales to 'see'. I'd lost 100g. Hahaha! Clearly my normal daily activity is around the 400 cals I might have at breakfast time that I had cut out.

It was only doable because I was on the afternoon work shift around childcare, so could stay in bed until 10 with child watching telly, doing our 'homeschool' stuff.

I can lose weight quite easily just eating 3 lowish carb (more like low GI because I'd prefer to eat vegetarian) meals a day, one plate, no sweet stuff, no snacking, but I thought this might make things happen more quickly (like it did before).

I don't really want to 'fast', I want to do the BSD until I'm out of obese (not worried about 'healthy' BMI, I know at 10 and a half stone I'll be fine), then move to lowish carb on a more permanent basis.

Today I had breakfast and lunch, and will have dinner. Feels better.

justanotherneighinparadise · 10/08/2020 15:47

I know you don’t really want to fast but you might end u having to fast if you want to lose weight. I felt the same initially, I was quite resistant to going back to fasting, but it works!

buntingandstarcharts · 10/08/2020 16:02

Thank you to @justanotherneighinparadise for encouraging me to join by commenting on my post in another thread. Newbie. Very tentative! Joining after feeling total loss of control/self esteem since having a baby a year ago. My husband (kindly) mentioned I had put on weight as if I hadn't noticed! Which has been my wake up call! Day 1 today, I have my MM book and recipe book as well as my highlighters and willpower! So pleased to have found you all. How long is everyone planning on doing the 'fast' bit of the diet? Is it super hard?

justanotherneighinparadise · 10/08/2020 16:17

Welcome bunting. It’s great to have you here 😍

WhatWillSantaBring · 10/08/2020 16:24

hello all, our maintenance thread is v v quiet and I still need the support, so I hope you don't mind me hanging out here. After a week on my new WOE - being 100% strict for 6 days, at 1500 cals a day PLUS 30 mins cardio PLUS weight training, I managed to put on 2lb, and then one day being not so strict (lots of wine and some pudding, but not overboard otherwise), and I've put on another 1lb, so very disheartened. I know they say you'll put on weight as your glycogen stores build back up after a long period of 800cals a day, but still.

I'm also worried that I'll not be able to maintain this WOE in the long term. And I still hate the way I look. Oh well.

interesting questions earlier I think from @NibbleQueen about the environmental impact of eating lots of animal protein. I struggle with this argument - yes, I understand that cutting down the Amazon to build pasture for beef is very damaging, as is the intensive dairy industry in the US, but if you're eating locally grown, traditionally farmed British meat, surely that is lower impact on the environment than having quinoa flown in from Peru, or green beans from Kenya, or your tofu from Indonesia? I'm not having a go at you or anyone vegetarian, but I really struggle with the the environmental impact of eating a plant based diet. I'm even worried now that I'm having to consume more non-UK grown vegetables to ensure I can eat enough veg! (I haven't habitually bought vegetables out of season for years, so my environmental impact has probably increased). I like to think that the reduction in consumption of processed food off-sets this though - Mr McVities is definitely having to reduce his hob-nob production since I started.
