Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

amazing that looked blooming lovely! Think I’ll do just the fried rice for lunch tomorrow! How many cals did it come in at?
A bit late for you open door but I did oven roasted salmon that I then flaked into steamed peppers & green beans and a dollop of yoghurt. The kids had the same but mixed in with pasta. Was meant to have courgetti with mine but none in the fridge bizarrely. Have just prepped a chicken curry for Thursday and am marinating some chicken in smoked paprika that I’ll do BBQ style tomorrow with corn on the cob and peppers - maybe do potato wedges for the kids too. Haven’t put any of these into MFP (story of my 8 weeks!) but should be ok. Fingers crossed.

springmachine · 05/06/2018 21:54

I did the 8 weeks 800 Cala and lost 2 stone in that time.

I'm now free eating but still without carbs (although I did have a taste of some lovely warm sourdough today)

I'm heading on holiday next week!
It will be pizzas and pastas galore.

Please guide me and give me strength

abitoflight · 06/06/2018 00:18

Well that didn't end as planned
Met friends in pub at 6 and just home Confused
I had more soup so calories only 1000ish
The Chinese looks gorgeous - screenshot for reference thank you Smile

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 06/06/2018 06:48

Snow - the fried rice was about 150 cal.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 06/06/2018 07:20

Well done amazing shrinking woman! It makes it all seem worthwhile when the scales are moving.
I go away tomorrow unexpectedly so I will have to be on my guard. Will check in just the same
Good results to all

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/06/2018 13:05

You are certainly living up to your name amazing!

This is my lunch today- I’m so hungry for this! There’s rather a lot of avocado on there because I had that rare and blissful experience of cutting one open exactly in the 17 minute window of perfection between rock hard, and grey mush. Must be eaten immediately!!!

Had a late lunch which I love, but I'm realising I'm a bit weird: roasted spring cabbage with bacon. Nom nom nom. I could eat my weight in cruciferous vegetables, but I suspect it would be just a bit anti-social in large quantities...

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 06/06/2018 16:05

Cabbage and bacon is a fabulous combination. Off out for supper with DD who has a Nandos voucher to use. I've looked at the menu online and am planning a supergrain salad with chicken at 516 calories. Lunch was 316 so pretty happy with that. Cycling was heavenly this morning and hellish this afternoon. But I did it Blush - not embarrassed just v v sweaty!

Hoviscats · 06/06/2018 16:09

Hello! I am new to BSD and am glad I have found this thread. I have about 2.5 stone to lose and am on day 3 of BSD. I have also decided to give up diet coke for the next 8 weeks which is a big deal for me!

I am managing ok on the 800 cals but have to say i feel pretty rubbish so far. I presume this is just an adjustment combined with caffeine withdrawal from the diet coke?! I dont drink tea or coffee so it was my only source!

Also I would love to be exercising (I have been running 2-3 miles 3 times a week) but I barely have the energy to look after the toddler the last few days so a run feels out of the question!

I am hoping some of you that have been on this plan before can tell me when I will get my energy back?! Thankyou!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 06/06/2018 18:11

Well done Nandos- delicious!

About 5 days for me - full of energy at the moment and annoying friends and colleagues

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 06/06/2018 18:29

Oh and welcome to the best thread on Mumsnet!

Snowglobes · 06/06/2018 18:38

Hello hovis! I’m slways tired anyway so this diet has made no difference either way!
bear 17 minute window! 🤣😂
anazing ly well done on the loss, thanks for the fried rice cals!! Well done finding g that gorgeous looking Nando’s! And you too chocegg. Think my 4lb on last week could take a while to come off despite eating ok today (789) & yesterday (813).
Discovered gorgeous FAGE total 5% fat yoghurt. Divine! Dipped a few strawberries in it today and tasted like double cream! Think 5% is fatty rather low cal. Not sure if it’s a live bio one though bear.

Snowglobes · 06/06/2018 18:40

Your bounciness comes across on the thread amazing Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/06/2018 18:41

Welcome hovis, you sound like you’re in the midst of carb flu, and probably a bit of caffeine detox, plus aspartame detox too! The key is lots of fat, drink lots of water, and Keep doing what you’re doing- it will pass. Regarding your running, I have learned so much over the year since starting running and low carbing in combination. I was recommended to take soluble isotonic drink (can get in Tesco, or Holland and Barrets) about 30 mind before a run which really helped. I have also been doing a lot of reading about lactic acid, and low carb, as I find when I’m due on I get a terrible stitch when running (weird I know) but apparently it’s actually a thing. Who knew??

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/06/2018 18:43

Snow it is a live one, but it’s too expensive and delicious to buy too often, I’d eat the whole pot!

OP posts:
TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 06/06/2018 18:50

Uh oh Snow! Sorry. I'm a bit tiggerish at the mo... it's the joy of bsdWink

Snowglobes · 06/06/2018 19:27

bear it was smallish 170g pot and I did indeed devour the lot!!!!! But counted it. amazing better a Tigger than an eeyore! I’m struggling low carb veg & low cal sides. Thought I’d plan tomorrow’s and have a nice steak with ‘crunchy red coleslaw’ from the diet book - supposed to be 430 cals including both yet I’ve followrd recipe precisely and MFP get it to be over that just the 1 serving of coleslaw! Had a small taste and is yummy. So I’ll need to have a much smaller portion! Now think I’ll need a better lunch than my usual cottage cheese. And/or another side. Any ideas for something substantial but low? What are you all planning? What are your faves... your go to’s etc pls?

veryveryquietly · 06/06/2018 19:39

OK, have had dinner and a snack, so closing the kitchen at 865 cals and 44 gr carbs. Nice getting myself back in gear. I made the chicken enchiladas w/ courgette ribbons rather than tortillas for dinner, and have lots leftover for tomorrow's lunch.

snowglobes I love roasted cauliflower as a side: cauli florets, a bit of olive oil, a bit of parmesan, roast the hell out of it. Substantial and yummy; add a lightly dressed baby spinach salad with a few cherry tomatoes, and you're golden. Or asparagus is in season? If I don't have the energy to make a proper side salad, I sometimes slice up beef or chicken and serve it on a bed of baby spinach, just to have more green on my plate alongside the protein and whatever bulky veg I'm having.

Hoviscats · 06/06/2018 20:31

Thanks for the welcome and for the advice bear :) I probably need to up my fat to be honest. Am having avocado with my dinner Grin.

Reading this thread is really motivating and I do feel really committed so hoping to see some decent results!
