Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Those do sound a bit big, like most things they are tastier when smaller but you can still cook and eat them, just trim them and cut diagonally into bite size pieces. You eat the whole pod. I am attaching a picture of our biggest ones so you can compare. I prefer to eat them when they are 6 inches long but our veg seem to fail completely or go crazy and we can't keep up.

Another of our biggest ones.

Ah thanks, that’s the ones. Think I’ll try a little stir fry with them and see what they are like!

Hi folks. In retrospect trying to start round two in the last few weeks of what has been an incredibly gruelling summer term was not the best planning. I've settled for eating mindfully most of the time and keeping the eating window small. I've lost 2lb so am 0.8lb off my lowest. I've also become addicted to m&s salads. Wish I could havd no food in the house at all and have one delivered to me at 12pm and 5pm.

Had a really good day today and have a delicious supper ready to bung in the oven - chicken and veg roasted with red pesto and garlic.

Will now have a read back through the thread and catch up on everyone's news!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 26/07/2018 15:54

Wow, some amazing losses and some great support (as always).

I'm restarting round two today. Really want to lose a noticeable amount before going back to work in September. I'm starting a course and would like to feel a bit more confident walking in the room on the first day.

Westwing thanks for the tip, my spicy runner bean Thai red curry with prawns was deeeee-licious!

It looks delicious Bear, don't forget to thank your MIL Wink. Having veg stir fry here too.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/07/2018 18:26

I will, I still have a million beans left over though!

Closing the kitchen today on 958 cals, 36g carbs. 14k steps (ran 10.5 km this morning though so have basically sat on my arse all day!)

Didn’t weigh in this morning but I will tomorrow, I feel like I’ve had a good week. I ate several chicken drumsticks today after my morning run and it really helped stave off the munchies by having protein. I’ve eaten much less cheese this week too, I’m a terrible slicer and snacker!

Next week is (annoyingly) the week of my cycle where I usually struggle as it’s week 4, and the pmt hits. So I am really going to focus on keeping the carbs low, I have definitely found this week that by keeping them around 30 rather than 50/60 it’s taken away the hunger a lot.

onanothertrain · 26/07/2018 18:57

32.4g carbs and 779 calories today, day 5 of 30DS.

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 26/07/2018 21:10

Managed to put 1lb back on, despite staying under 800 calories. I'm over today (around 1,100), but I've been shearing sheep this evening and could eat a horse!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 27/07/2018 07:45

1.4lb off! Very pleased.

Shearing sheep sounds extremely hard work - must be very hot too! Got to be good for weight loss.

DandelionAndBedrock · 27/07/2018 08:19

Amazingly thick Greek yoghurt for breakfast here, although last night I insisted that DP share some ice cream with me. It was nice, I haven’t lost my sweet tooth as much as I had hoped, but not worth the guilt I don’t think.

DP took a bikini pic for me and I don’t hate it! Huge NSV there.

Polpette · 27/07/2018 08:22

Newaveragebear I think my new goal is going to be 'feeling less exhausted by life', all of those changes you list are amazing, after just eight weeks I'm surprised at the difference in how I feel mentally and physically. It's definitely true to say that it's about more than just a number on the scale.

Onanothertrain I'm impressed that you're managing 30 Day Shred in this weather - I love that exercise plan and I keep wanting to start it up again but the heat is putting me off (excuses excuses!!).

Despite sticking to plan religiously I'm still suffering plateau hell - lose a lot, put some on, plateau for ages, lose a lot, put some on, plateau for ages and repeat and repeat!! I refuse to be defeated by the plateaus. This weekend I will get off my bum and try and exercise through this current plateau.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/07/2018 08:48

Thanks polpette. Without wanting to sound all evangelical, I would never have believed I could become a fit healthy person. And I have. And as soon as you start saying ‘I can’ in one area, you start saying ‘I can’ in other places too- which is really life changing. For me, exercise is about maintenance. I don’t think it helps me lose weight, if anything it makes it harder (eg. Yesterday I ran 10km but then all day I was absolutely starving, ate more calories, had to repeatedly remind myself that the salted caramel magnums were equivalent to five kilometres, and ended up eating several chicken thighs for fat/protein- but all additional ‘effort’ in my day required just to break even) but I hope that exercise will form a big part of maintaining this weight loss into the future because I can a) eat more and not gain, and b) it helps me keep my eye on the prize so to speak. My friend does weight watchers and when she brings her shopping home she writes on all the packets how many km she needs to run to burn them off!

Polpette I'm far north it's not as warm here!
It does work and it's only 20 minutes or so, I've done it a few times in the past but bloody hell it's dull!

Oblomov18 · 27/07/2018 10:43

Omg that broad bean curry looked Devine!

Snowglobes · 27/07/2018 11:00

Haven’t been on here for ages! Back from holiday but Building Work taking over my life and have been rubbish with food plus drinking wine on an evening plus zero exercise as too hot! Hotter here than it was on holiday! So I’m going to read all your posts and catch up. I aim to start round 2 after the weekend as will give me some planning time.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/07/2018 11:17

Oblomov I managed to get a jar of Thai paste discontinued in Asda for 12p and coconut milk pouches for 30p, so it was an absolute bargain too!!

End of an absolutely exhausting week. Several days off piste due to work events with meals; I tried to stay on track but it just wasn't always feasible. But have been staying in place all week (up a lb one day, down a lb the next) so at least I haven't gained. Next week will be better because the stress will definitely be lower and I'll have time to think about eating/cooking.

Great to see you're all doing well! Stay cool (or as cool as possible...)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/07/2018 18:53

Another reasonable enough day for me, that’s pretty much the whole week where I’m around 1000 cals and under 50g carbs, so as a long termer I’m pretty pleased with that. I had an apple today and it tasted so sweet. Haven’t eaten yet tonight but we’re having chicken in Parma ham, asparagus, and mushrooms in creme fraiche and and Parmesan. Plus I’ve budgeted for 3 x 30 ml gins and tonic. As a result my total for the day is going to be around 1200 cals, 50g carbs (on the nose) and 11.5k steps. No run today though, as the weather is forecast to cool tomorrow I’m planning a 12km whopper at 8.00 tomorrow morning!

I’m going to weigh in after running tomorrow, I anticipate a few pounds off but it’s hard to tell really. Next week could be a tough week for me (cycle wise) and I’m not sure I’ll reach my goal before we go away. I’ll aim to maintain/small gain while we’re away as there’s no major need to eat loads (we’re uk self catering!) and my strategy last time was to eat as much BSD as I wanted and run loads, so hopefully that will work again!

13 stone 10 lb this morning. Total loss since starting 1 stone 5.8 lb.

Really good day yesterday until 7pm then binged. The only positive is that I logged it all on MFP. I can't seem to have more than one good day at the moment. Think I need to go back to first principles.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/07/2018 09:53

10.3.6 for me this morning, that’s about 3lb off this week.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 28/07/2018 10:10

Well done, Bear! You are such an inspiration. Is that your lowest? What's your target? I hope you enjoyed your run this morning.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/07/2018 10:21

That’s my lowest, the last half stone is going very slowly though! My target is 9.13 which will be 2.5 stone off. It took about 4 Months to lose 2 and the remaining 3+ to lose 2lb!!!

OP posts:
Westwing1 · 28/07/2018 11:21

Great week Bear well done. I've lost 1 1/2 lbs this week, not much but I am getting back into the swing of things. Feeling optimistic. Like everyone says the last half stone comes off slowly. I have a couple of hours to myself today and want to write down my stats and remind myself of my goals. Will also see if back good enough for gentle session on the x-trainer.
