Blood Sugar Diet thread 11

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Morning
Dandelion- yay, post the pics! I love a good before/after transformation!
Kevin glad you’re feeling less murderous. A good day of very few carbs is a nice little weight loss boost, but I find I very quickly descend into stabby rage.

Lovely meal last night, didn’t go too mad although they didn’t have any slimline tonic so I probably had a lot of sugar and I did also have dessert. It was nice though, so worth it!

Kevin that's fantastic, well done to you.

Snow definitely keep the pictures. You don't have to look at them but I bet you will regret it once they are totally gone. I have never ever worn a bikini in my life so well done for even doing it.

bear how have your DCs adapted to no sugar? It's something I have thought about but don't know how it would go. My older DC has a restricted diet based around carbs and he is starting to put weight on - he has always been prone but I can see him really bulking up over the summer and he is self conscious about it. Sad

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/07/2018 10:45

Pony they aren’t entirely sugar free I will add - and particularly at the moment as it’s ice lolly season. But in January we stopped buying biscuits and puddings as a starting point. I buy 1 pack of club biscuits for dd to take for lunches, and Ds 5 has school dinners so has pudding there, but little Ds (2) has nothing during the week at all. They each have a treat box and on Sunday we have Sunday Treat Night and they can choose from their boxes and the older ones are allowed to choose a couple of things (I do this rather than say one thing each, because actually they never finish it and I think it’s helped them to see that it’s actually not a nice feeling to be stuffed with sweets) . On week nights they have either tinned fruit or fresh fruit and they can have plain Greek yogurt but they rarely actually have it.

The hardest thing is finding snacks which are actually sugar free as most kids stuff has some in- we buy cheddars, bread sticks, mini cheeses, and literally boxes of fruit. Little Ds likes olives, crab sticks, etc too. I will add though, I have not noticed any difference in either their behaviour or their weight from doing this (although they weren’t overweight anyway). It’s also very hard at parties, play dates and anything social and they do have more now than they used to. We are going to start again in September being a bit more strict again.

Dandelion that’s amazing, what a transformation!

Wowee Dandelion that's a big difference in a couple of months. That must feel good.

Thanks for that info bear. When I look at it, DS1 doesn't have that much sugar sugar - no biscuits, generally will have breadsticks and houmous rather than a yoghurt after dinner. And we have a treat drawer but don't dip into it much - we still have sweets/choc from last Halloween, plus Christmas, Easter etc. But he eats no fruit or vegetables (never has) and his food/snacks are carb based - rice cakes and brioches, pasta, pizza, bread, cereal chips. He isn't keen on meat so not much protein. Maybe I should give him a protein shake for a snack, what do you think?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/07/2018 13:19

I’d make him shakes/ smoothies maybe- we have almond milk, frozen berries, peanut butter, avocado etc in ours and the kids love them.

ponygirlcurtis · 22/07/2018 13:46

Good idea bear, will try that. Good way to get fruit in him as well I guess!

onanothertrain · 22/07/2018 14:21

Well done dandelion those pics are amazing and such an incentive

DandelionAndBedrock · 22/07/2018 15:52

Thanks everyone, you’re all very kind Blush. They have helped me to make good choices today, avoiding wine and nibbles at a friend’s.

Genuinely couldn’t have kept it up without this thread though. You lot are awesome!

Westwing1 · 22/07/2018 17:40

Hi, can I join please? Age 50, gained almost 2 stone in the last 2 or so years. Probably a combination of getting older and needing less calories, also lost my sister to cancer two years ago and it's a bit of a blur. I have lost a stone this year, I have the BSD book and love the recipes, 5ft 5, current weight is 9st 10 lbs, small boned. Goal is to get to 9st in 6 weeks. Love being slimmer, I want to wear my skinny jeans and boots in the autumn, get a haircut and enjoy my 50s. I am lazy about exercise but will try and force myself onto cross trainer.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/07/2018 18:02

Welcome westwing! Of course you can join us, have you actually begun the 8 weeks or have you just got the recipes?

Dandelion this may be a personal question, but do you find you have a lot of excess skin? Especially as you’ve lost so many inches clearly across your middle? I am plagued by my loose skin but you don’t seem to have any! What’s your secret?

OP posts:
Westwing1 · 22/07/2018 18:54

Thanks bear, I have been dipping in and out of the book since 1st Jan using it for meal ideas and calorie counting, on strict weeks I keep a food diary. I guess the pattern has been to lose 4 lbs, maintain for a month and then another big effort to lose another 4 lbs, maintain new weight and so on. Week around period is hopeless as my body usually rebels and demands carbs. Wine, crisps, cheese are my downfall but I have pretty much given up crisp habit and wine habit is generally much better. Someone on mumsnet described losing weight in your late 40s and 50s as requiring a military campaign for every lb and I have found this to be true. I am going to knuckle down tomorrow and commit to the 800 kc a day, no alcohol should make it doable. I have been lurking on these threads, it's good to join and I'm ready to get stuck in and lose another 10 lbs.

DandelionAndBedrock · 22/07/2018 19:12

Good luck Westwing! Do your measurements and take your photos!

Bear, I’m not sure, if I’m honest. I don’t think I do have much? I put it down to an unhealthy relationship with my personal trainer and new found gym habit (three people in the past week have asked me if I think I am addicted to the gym now). Maybe also age? I am just on the younger side of 30, and haven’t had children yet which I suspect helps.

Gym wise, I have 1 weekly PT session where we punch, cross train and do kettlebells/weight machines/squats/rowing/cycling, I go to his boxing class once a week (so he sometimes chucks in things he knows I need - like the week we did 5 minutes of squats), I spin between 3 and 5 times a week and I have just started doing body blitz and HIIT strength classes. So I definitely do more exercise than I used to (spin once a week, swimming and the odd PT session).

I told my PT I wanted to focus on being strong, not losing weight, because I thought it would be more motivating. I’m 10 months in and I honestly don’t know if I can live without him in my life. He suggested low carb to me to begin with, and I ignored him until April when I found BSD.

Sorry. That was a long post since the short version is “no idea!”.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/07/2018 19:19

Dandelion no I don’t think you look like you have much either- I have loads. I’m the opposite of you- wrong side of 30 35 and have had 3 giant babies so my stomach just doesn’t have the bounce-back-ability. It’s better than it was, but some days it looks very droopy! That sounds like you’re really going for it at the gym, well done!

Last day of week 2 today.
It's not been a great week - fell off the wagon on Thursday.
I've decided to have one day a week where I try and stay under 50g of carbs but don't count calories. I think it's my only hope if getting to week 8.
Good day today though, started 30 day shred and had 14.7g carbs and 522 calories.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/07/2018 20:00

I’m having something of a ‘last supper’ tonight, nothing too dramatic but just to gear myself up for a very strict week. I know I say this all the time but I am determined to get under 800 calories at least a few times this week and I want to pull the carbs down too alongside. One last final big push before holidays! I’ll weigh in tomorrow, I don’t think it will be too horrendous even so, but probably 1-2lb on (which considering I’ve been off plan since Thursday wouldn’t be awful)

My week ahead looks like this: I’ve stripped my menu back and realistically the only way I can achieve 800 c is to have a very light lunch and a larger dinner, and try to delay that dinner to 7pm ish so I don’t pick in the evening. So I’m having some variation of 2 eggs each day for lunch, my milk allowance, and then that leaves 500 cals or so for dinner each day, which is actually quite a substantial meal. Tomorrow it’s marinated lamb steaks, and veg, and pea purée.

In a bid to be completely honest with myself, I am committing to weighing every morsel this week before I eat it and not guessing after the event as well!

DandelionAndBedrock · 22/07/2018 20:28

bear I don’t remember any from the picture you posted a while ago, but I suppose it is relative isn’t it? Like you say, if some days are better than others then obviously we remember the less-good ones.

Good luck with your strict week! We go away on Wednesday so too late for me now!

Seasidedreamer · 22/07/2018 20:58

Welcome westwing and good luck on the new start.

Great photos Dandelion - you must be chuffed with your progress.

A good day for me 824 cals/ 70g carbs. Eating quite a lot of pulses for fibre but when I get back off hols am going to try and get carbs under 50g a day.

Lallypopstick · 23/07/2018 10:29

I have eaten mostly off plan this weekend. If there are any positives from this, it's that I haven't eaten much. Also I got to wear my goal trousers yesterday so I want to stick with the plan to get to my next goal (a dress in a smaller size).

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 23/07/2018 13:24

DH is working from home at the moment. Since he fits into his kilt for this wedding we're going to in a fortnight, he's just tucked into a plate of chicken nuggets with various dipping sauces while I've munched through a salad. Definitely unfair!

Another 2lbs vanished over the weekend, 9lbs lost in 6 days. I can't believe it's coming off this fast, that's nearly a third of the total I wanted to lose.

onanothertrain · 23/07/2018 17:40

649 calories and 34.9g carbs today.
Not going to be weighing myself as no scales so decided to take measurements instead. Stupid question I know but where do you take your waist measurement? I thought it was the narrowest bit but on googling it it says just above your belly button???

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/07/2018 18:10

I always do mine around my belly button, and also at the narrowest part just under the ribs.

Waiting for my dinner tonight, and I’m starving and grouchy with it as I’ve had virtually zero carbs today so far. Will post properly later but I think I’ll be coming in at 900 cals and about 18g carbs. Very good for me!
