Blood Sugar Diet thread 11

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Thanks bear. I've taken both anyway.

veryveryquietly · 23/07/2018 20:51

insanely long and busy day today, with only upside that didn't have much time to think about food and now I am full and probably too tired to eat anything else this evening. So, a good day, ending at 835 cals, 31 gr carbs, and unbelievably, no hunger "I want some chocolate" pangs.

New, smaller sports bra arrived and fits well, so now I've just got to squeeze in gym time this week to use it.

Seasidedreamer · 23/07/2018 21:50

Not a bad day. 832 cals/ 41g carbs. Only downside was the kids have eaten all my Oppo ice cream ‘because it’s healthy’! Trying to be good pre holiday but already slightly concerned about staying somewhat on the straight and narrow while there.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/07/2018 21:59

Kitchen finally closing on 1000 cals give or take, and 24g carbs. 14k steps, no running. Dinner was delicious and worth waiting for, and eating later definitely staves off the evening picky feeling, but I need to really focus to avoid the 4-5pm picking instead.

Tomorrow it’s likely to be salad and hard boiled eggs for lunch, and a Young’s fish thing for dinner with veg, so hopefully could be another low cal and low carb day!

Lots of wobbly fat here - hoping it’s a whoosh waiting to surprise me on holiday, but suspect it is my Friday chocolate binge.

Acorncat · 23/07/2018 23:11

Well my 8 weeks are up, now the hard part of maintaining begins! I’ve reached my target of 9st7, lost 24lbs. And yet I already feel myself slipping into old habits Sad. Saying that, instead of a whole pizza at the weekend I had half a small one with salad, and only hate half my chips at McDonald’s Blush. I’m staying fairly low carb but eating too much crap food like cocktail sausages and meatballs, aargh, need proper food!

Seasidedreamer · 24/07/2018 07:35

That’s an amazing achievement- congratulations Acorn!

Ilovepeaches · 24/07/2018 08:10

Hello! Please can I join your thread!
Have just read MM's BSD and clever guts books and have 3.5 stone to lose to return to pre baby weight (baby turns 4 this weekend! 🙈) I started the BSD in May but only did a couple of weeks (lost 12 lbs)so I need some motivation to stick with it!
Starting today!
Hello all! 😊

Westwing1 · 24/07/2018 11:03

Well done Acorn huge achievement! You must have dropped one or two dress sizes! I am feeling a bit glum and sore (hurt my back). Trying to find my mojo. I was on holiday last week and gained back 3 lbs or so which has knocked me back. I didn't go mad either but did have carbs and wine. Pilchard fillets for breakfast and rereading a chapter of BSD.

DandelionAndBedrock · 24/07/2018 11:31

Well done Acorn, that’s great work! Welcome Peaches - there is plenty of motivation on here!

I just bought a jacket in the sale that was on a size 12 hanger. Tried it on and thought it was a little tighter than I was expecting over the hips, but still fitted and looked nice. My hips will always be my biggest bit, so bought it anyway. After paying, I realised the actual label said size 10! I was wearing a size 16 when I started, but in reality should have been 18-20.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/07/2018 18:46

Well done acorn, welcome peaches!

Closing the kitchen on 933 cals, 38g carbs, 14 steps (6km run)

That’s 2 pretty reasonable days under my belt. I did a good fast run this morning, I’ve been going slow recently so last week did some speed work and intervals, which are obviously paying off as I ran 6km in exactly 30 mins. My food was also good, although not exactly my planned menu, was still ok.

Tomorrow might be the first real challenge as we’re going out as it’s now the holidays, but it’s way too hot to take a packed lunch so I’ll be dependent on cafe offerings!

33.7g carbs and 688 calories today also day 3 of 30DS. On the down side my OH has just proudly announced he's booked an Italian restaurant on Saturday night Hmm

Hoviscats · 25/07/2018 18:42

Hi everyone, just checking in really! I havent had a great week 7 (and half of week 8!) with several events, family visiting and basically a desertion of my BSD mojo!

Weighed in this morning though and have maintained since end of week 6 so still lost 22lb total which i am very pleased about.

I go on holiday in 8 days time so planning a stict 8 days to finish off and then do my utost to maintain on holiday before coming home and hopefully doing a push to lose the final 7-10lb to get me to target.

Have had a great NSV this week though. I have had a diet coke addiction for years which has got worse over the last 4 or 5. I crept up from a can a day to 3 cans which i knew was awful for me but got me through the days with early rising children (i dont drink tea or coffee so needed the caffeine!)

Anyway when i started BSD I promised myself to go cold turkey on the diet coke for at least 6 weeks. My friends and fanily are astounded I have stuck to it but I did and despite struggling the first week I have generally not found it too bad.

I really fancied one this week though so after 6 wees off it I had one as I felt like I had broken the cycle. Anyway it was awful! I didn't even finish it! It just tasted of cheap, chemically cola flavour melted ice pops Shock.

I am so amazed how much my tastebuds have changed on this plan. I find I even crave savoury instead of sweet (mostly) these days and even if I have given myself permission to have something 'off plan' I often cant bring myself to eat It

Long may it continue!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/07/2018 19:47

That’s great hovis (the Diet Coke bit!- not the desertion of BSD bit!)

I agree about tastes changing, plus I’m finding that by actively cutting my carbs even with allowed foods, and being more aware and keeping them below 50, my appetite has just waned a lot. My high protein lunches seem to be doing the job, I still haven’t had my dinner and yet haven’t grazed and I’m not ravenous yet

Once I’ve eaten, my daily total will be 1013 cals, 40g carbs, 16k steps (ran 6km this morning), making today my third really good day on the trot. I might hop on the scales for a little pre-weekend weigh in tomorrow. The dc are out all day so I’m planning a nice long run mid-morning along a new hilly route I’ve been working out all week.

32.6g carbs and 634 calories today. Day 4 of 30DS. Struggled today, feel as though I'm eating the same things over and over and only half way through week 3

DandelionAndBedrock · 25/07/2018 20:27

We are finally on holiday and had our first meal out. I ordered feta cheese to start...I think I have just eaten a whole slab of feta, drizzled with honey. Not ideal, but it isn’t too awful. We had dessert included but I sent the menu away to avoid temptation.

I was 11st2.8 when we left this morning. 11st2 was my pre-holiday goal, so we’ll see what happens.

onanothertrain · 25/07/2018 20:35

Ooohh I love feta!
Have a great holiday Dandelion

Polpette · 26/07/2018 08:24

Onanothertrain it can feel a bit repetitive at first but as you get more confident with the plan you can experiment with more recipes. Having said that my lunches are very repetitive but that's only to take the stress of planning out of it.

Glad to hear you're still doing so well Hovis despite all the entertaining. I had the same experience with Diet Coke - can't believe how bad it tastes, how did I not taste it before?? Very glad to have it out of my life.

Enjoy your holiday Dandelion!

Polpette · 26/07/2018 08:28

Daft question for you Newaveragebear, I know you're not at your particular desired weight yet but do you feel the fittest/healthiest you've ever been?

abitoflight · 26/07/2018 08:46

I find I'm eating so much fish in this diet
Thanks for recommendation of Young's gastro range marinated basa - 4 mins in microwave and 116 calories makes it a great lunch for me
Sent DH out with a picture of it but he came home with the lightly dusted basa fillets - about 260 calories- really tasty
I would recommend it to others who don't like 'fishy' fish iykwim - it's not slithery or very fishy smelling
I'd been wary of these newer fish before 🙄

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/07/2018 08:50

Polpette I definitely do! Obviously the actual running for about 80-90 mins non stop is a complete life change for me, and I’m amazed how my body has responded to that to be honest. But other things too- I’ve always been prone to chest/throat infections and yet since January have not had a single one. I sleep better. My mental health is hugely improved and I just feel younger and less exhausted by life all the time (probably due to a combination of headspace, fresh air and physical activity). The only downside is the aches- I have a new creaky ache every day, usually my ankles and knees when I get up- never painful as such but just aching and stiffness. Small price to pay I guess!

OP posts:
onanothertrain · 26/07/2018 10:07

Thanks polpette, think I need to buy the book and a spiraliser!!
Being vegetarian I'm used to eating pasta/ cous cous / risotto etc so it's just getting used to the change.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/07/2018 12:24

My mil has just given me loads of runner beans, any suggestions what to do with them? I’ve never eaten them before!

OP posts:
Westwing1 · 26/07/2018 13:10

Hi Bear, stir fry is pretty tasty, chop and tail them, if they are really big maybe trim a bit off stringy sides (can be tough), and cut into two or three pieces, bit of salt, garlic, chilli and ginger if you like it, pan fry in butter also good. They cook quickly. I love veg and can eat them simply steamed for a couple of mins but rest of my family won't eat them like that. We have a glut of courgettes (roasted in olive oil yum), runner beans, cucumbers, Swiss chard and toms here. I am getting back on track again, lost 1 1/4 lbs this week. Getting over my holiday sourdough habit. Doing a lot of stretches for my back and it is less painful. I am in awe of those of you running in this heat.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/07/2018 13:18

Thanks westwing, I think these are runner beans- they’re about a foot long and rather dry and leathery/furry feeling (like an apricot skin?) silly question, but do I eat the bean inside or the outer bits? Or both? I was going to do a red Thai curry tonight so I could do your stir fry recipe!
