Blood sugar diet thread 7

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2017 13:53

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Welcome Tigger. It never really occurs to me that anyone is lurking! But welcome!!

Likes idea of treadmill whilst Netflix'ing Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/08/2017 17:49

That looks nice oblo , is it bolognese on courgette ribbons? Looks so much healthier and fresher than a proper 'pasta'!

Couch to 5k is a good idea actually- can you download a programme to follow , or just build up gradually by yourself? I like the idea of hiit as well, the one we want has an incline setting so you can (in theory!) do short bursts of hilly/fast and intersperse with slower/flatter. Basically anything that gets my backside moving will help, but the benefit of a treadmill is I can do it early mornings, while Ds is asleep or early evenings once they're in bed. Waiting til Dh gets home is too late sometimes.

Tonight we're having chicken kebabs that have been marinating in yoghurt/spices all day, with roasted peppers and cauliflower. Smells pretty tasty actually so I am really looking forward to it; plus non scale victory: went to asda, didn't buy wine, or chocolate. Actually held in my hand a bar of dairy milk then put it back. I bloody wanted it as well, but now I'm so glad I didn't.

We've had quorn 'meat'balls for supper, I also had courgetti Oblo!

And I'm closing the kitchen on 709 cals - we're off out tonight but I'm driving so no booze.

I'm enjoying feeling back in control and perceptually it feels like I've re-lost a lot more than 3lbs.

I have also reset my monthly targets - hoping for 3-3.5st total by end of October.

Oblomov17 · 24/08/2017 18:08

Yes. I find the tiny string courgetti that you buy in a pack from supermarkets go a bit mushy. No texture.

I prefer buying 2 courgettes and using a potato peeler to get long thick strips.

Bolognese Dh made: mince, jar of sauce, mushrooms, onion, garlic, tomato purée and Worcester sauce.

Simples.

SpaghettiAlphabetti · 24/08/2017 18:17

I've got a couch to 5k app. It's by Fitness22 ltd and has a yellow icon if you're looking for it in App Store.

It's ace because you just play your choice of music and the man interrupts occasionally telling you to run or walk. You don't have to fiddle with your phone whilst running.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 24/08/2017 18:21

Welcome Tigger !

Oblomov I would never have thought of making my own courgetti but your's has inspired me.

I have a poorly DS, have had hardly any sleep and am currently at 510 cals and 49g carbs. I'm making chicken noodle soup for DS his staple 'feeling sick' food but I'm not sure what I'll have with my remaining 290 cals and only 1g of carbs Hmm

bear very exciting news about the treadmill. When I was a student, I had an exercise bike in my bedroom and I used to exercise on it whilst studying, watching tv. I do think having a piece of equipment in the house makes it easier to stay fit. Good luck!

Flightywoman · 25/08/2017 09:14

It's going so fast! Another 1.75lbs this morning - 4.75 since Tuesday! This makes me very happy!

It's like the beginning - and it's keeping my highly motivated.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/08/2017 09:39

Excellent flighty, keep up the good work!

Kids out today (hurrah!) and I have plans for more decorating, this time it's the bathroom. I am so done with renovations! Stops me eating though, stuck some tunes on the iPod and just get into the zone. Tea tonight is supposed to be 'meatza' - beef and herbs base with pizza toppings. Not sure how it will go down, pizza topped chicken is a fave in our house so hopefully this will be too.

OP posts:
JigglyTuff · 25/08/2017 10:03

Well done flighty!

I am here to recommend the M&S cauli rice with ginger and garlic - it's bloody lovely. 36 calories for half a pack. Think it's got carrot and red pepper in it too - might see if I can fish the packaging out the bin and try to recreate it at home

HourglassTigger · 25/08/2017 12:41

Day 1 - in the bag.

Accomplished courtesy of, ahem, pretty much everything on Bear's 'Foods to eat' list: blueberry and toasted flaked almond greek yoghurt, anchovy, avocado and egg salad and reluctantly, when the suppertime gremlins threatened sabotage, a modest (for me) olive, parmesan 'shards' and parma ham platterette ... I reckon ooh at least sixteen times the recommended daily salt intake.

Not fretting calories, at this stage the sole focus is getting through first three days sugar withdrawal.

I felt reassuringly calm last night, but evenings are danger zone and there's a dark history of wee small hours fridge-raiding, so there's no safe point till I wake up the next day.

Morning coffee with a dribble of single cream in place of frothy semi-skimmed feels too decadent. But black coffee is a step too far right now. To be chalked onto the 'aspirational me' list, alongside that strange notion I've read of hereabouts - the 'single square' of black chocolate.

tobee · 25/08/2017 14:15

Afternoon all. I'm looking for tips about getting a deadline. I did my 8 weeks plus a bit more leading up to my summer holiday. Then I've been following with interruptions and some success. But I'm much more of the "I know it works, I'll be stricter next week" mentality. I need a start date and an end date. Ive got a weight target but that's not the same. Also, on my first 8 weeks I barely cheated, but next week I've got pub meet up/catch up with friends and I'll probably have no problem having a wine or two. AngryShockSmile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/08/2017 15:30

Tobee I find to just plot it out on the calendar for the 8 weeks, working out exactly when those dates fall, helps. You can then factor in social events. Remind yourself that one meal out in a week is 1 out of 21 meals that might be off plan, the other 20 can be perfectly balanced.

Bear- remind self to follow own advice.

I found my second/subsequent rounds much harder than my first. My first, I had a young ish baby, was still not really drinking much as had only recently finished breastfeeding, was very very motivated to shift baby weight, and was quickly won over by the 'new diet' mentality. Ironically I was also getting more sleep than I am now. My subsequent rounds have been much harder as I have more of a casual bottle of wine habit with Dh, I'm stuck in a bit of a food rut and it's not new anymore, and I'm knackered. I have also kind of accepted my baby weight, adopted it as my own! I cannot blame my baby for it as he is now nearly 2 (and 5, and 13!)

blueskyinmarch · 25/08/2017 15:36

After having done so well over the past 10 days I have completely blown it. DH and I are away for 3 nights as it is our wedding anniversary and my birthday. We are in Edinburgh at the festival and yesterday stayed out late drinking too much and ended up having a Chinese meal. Today had my birthday lunch out and as I slightly hungover ate every carb on the menu! I need to pull it back right away. At least I won't be drinking today!

SpaghettiAlphabetti · 25/08/2017 20:11

Happy Birthday bluesky. Sounds like a great weekend! I think you should just enjoy yourselves and get back on it Monday. You have to have a life!

I'm closing on 1089. First day I've been really hungry. Had lunch in a cafe with DCs on a day out. The only low cal thing I could choose was the tomato soup. It came with a small roll which I also ate as I was so hungry after no breakfast.

The lack of protein really got to me by late afternoon so I had a snack of Greek yoghurt and raspberries hence the extra calories.

I have guests tomorrow. Undecided if I will join them on the planned takeaway tomorrow night....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/08/2017 21:22

Spaghetti you might find that the tomato soup had sugar in it, even if homemade. Plus bread always makes me starving! That might explain your hunger? Don't write off tomorrow- you can still have a takeaway on plan, maybe not calorie counted, but you can definitely get something with everyone else. If we have an Indian I will have 2 starters such as tandoori chicken or prawns, anything dry/no sauce really, and have it with salad. With Chinese, our local one does a 'house special With veg' which is basically all different meats, stir fried with veg- I just ask for no sauce to be added. Or crispy duck. Pizza, I'm afraid there's nothing (except the box!). I find it's helpful to stick to ok foods, and give myself freedom to have a drink and not calorie count, rather than try to be too strict. Otherwise I go completely the other way as I have zero willpower when I'm socialising!

OP posts:
SpaghettiAlphabetti · 26/08/2017 07:45

Thanks bear. Pizza box Grin

These are our best friends who we don't see often due to distance. We have an AMAZING Indian by us so they always say 'can we have indian'. DH and I are known in the Indian. He gave us a free takeaway when our DCs were born. It's no wonder we are overweight. Hmm

We are out all day today and I'm taking just a chicken salad rather than buying something after yesterday. I think I might just fall of the wagon for a few hours tonight and enjoy myself...! BBQ tomorrow so I can stay on it

In other news I've weighed in today. After 6 days I've lost....5lb!!! I'll say that again...5lb!

I never have a successful 'first week of a diet' and get all cross when everyone else loses loads and I lose 1lb and get the 'it's in the right direction' pity speech.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/08/2017 08:46

That's great spaghetti, 5lbs is brilliant!

OP posts:
yumyumpoppycat · 26/08/2017 09:24

Well done spaghetti - lovely when the hard work gets the result on the scale.

I was fairly sensible yest but a fair bit over 800 and scale has dropped a smidge so I think it was def the wine and choc screwing things up.

Agree Bluesky - there should be no guilt about having some celebrations for your birthday Cake

Good advice about takeaways Bear I would never think to have Chinese without sauce.

JigglyTuff · 26/08/2017 09:31

That's great spaghetti. Could you have tandoori chicken? I have just tried to stay on plan re carbs but sod the calories on nights out. I've not been calorie counting since 6th August and have stayed the same weight.

I think I'm going back on it after the Bank Holiday though as bad habits are creeping back in (snacking) and I don't want to go back there

Oblomov17 · 26/08/2017 10:57

Well done spaghetti. 5lbs in really good.

I'm not doing so well. I keep drinking wine, eating crisps etc.

Last night I even ate mashed potato. I have really missed it.

Not sure how to get back on track? maybe when they start school on 6 September it will be better?

I'm going away end of September to Majorca with ds1's Football team mums. I don't wanna look shit in a bikini. 👙
Mashed potato isn't going to help!!

and then to Budapest mid October with my closest 'girlfriends'.

Tobee what is your timescale/goals. Do you have an event/party that drives you. I always find a holiday/holy communion/party where I want to look nice, is my best motivator. What is yours?

Flightywoman · 26/08/2017 12:41

Well done Spaghetti! And a high five because I too have lost 5lbs since starting back on Tuesday! Chuffed to bits doesn't even cover it!

Oblo, my main motivation at the moment is my sister's hen party at the end of October and wedding in early November. I would like to have lost 3 to 3.5 stone by then and I think it's doable with strict club. Part of my motivation is to not look like the family whale in the pictures and partly that I have a new waspie/corset to wear and need to make my dress to go with it, which I don't want to do too much in advance or else I'll have to alter it!

I have 6 to 7 stone to lose, I hope to be halfway there by the wedding...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/08/2017 13:09

Hi everyone!
Big night out last night, lots of GinWine! Don't feel too bad today, although weighed myself and was pretty ashamed about just exactly how many pounds I've gained this summer. Strict club must begin for me tomorrow. In fact, it's got to be more like 'project bear' as I am feeling very unhealthy at the moment, so I think something of a mini overhaul is required. On complete chance, I have discovered that stevia (which I have in my coffee x3 a day- naughty) has been giving me a headache. No word of a lie, every day for 6 months I've had this dull ache and thought it was my eyes, but wearing my glasses hasn't helped so naturally began to suspect massive brain tumour or other sinister goings on. Yesterday had no stevia, no headaches. Nor today. This is actually a revelation of sorts, and it's amazing how much better I feel without that lingering thud. So it's motivating me a little to change my other, off plan 'cheats' which I kid myself don't affect me.

Hi oblomov! I haven't really got any things on the horizon (sad) until Christmas I suppose. I've got stones and pounds goal. I was thinking "just because it's 1st December" Grin

I'm super hungry today. Get these days now and again; very annoying. Later last night I snaffled some ham. 🙄

I slept all wrong and am knackered now. My dc are back from uni and about to go to uni. They are night owls and I've got into the habit of chilling with them. 😬

tobee · 27/08/2017 14:21

1st September not December. That would be giving me some time off🙃

APlaceOnTheCouch · 27/08/2017 14:52

Well done spaghetti and flighty
Oblomov I'm jealous of all your upcoming holidays.
I've had an odd weekend from a BSD pov. I had a stomach upset, 6 hours walking round a gaming convention and 10 hours round trip in the car. It meant 12 hours eating nothing at all and then snaffling a small chicken and mushroom pie at a motorway services. I also bought a bottle of rhubarb gin because it was so pretty but I haven't opened it yet. I'll save it for celebrating if strictclub goes to plan Wink
