Blood sugar diet thread 7

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

yumyum yy you're right. I've just checked and there are lots of foodstuffs where they haven't added fibre so it's showing as zero. I feel a bit silly that I never noticed before - duh! Blush
Thanks for the list of the top vegetables. I do tend to eat avocado, carrots and broccoli every week.I think I just need to be more conscious of it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/08/2017 20:12

Had major wagon fall off incident today. Is that my first strict club yellow card?

Tobee did your Ds get the results he wanted/needed?

yumyumpoppycat · 17/08/2017 20:17

Bear I am not totally giving up on summer hol strict club but it's bloody hard! Ok day for me today 930 and 50 ish carbs 14 fibre, but next week is likely to be even harder as we have some dc free nights - not sure I can resist nice wine etc.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/08/2017 20:24

Seriously, I ate a McDonalds and about 8 chocolate digestives. I don't even know why, they weren't even nice. It is hard when the kids are off, the toddler isn't sleeping and I was up at 6- but even so. Feel yuck now as well. I always get back on the wagon though, glutton for punishment as well as just general glutton!

tobee · 17/08/2017 21:01

Thanks for asking bear. Well that was a crappy 48 hours of stress and lack of sleep. DS got his second choice uni which I think will turn out fine in the end. I barely slept last night. (1/2 hour maybe?). Got DS up for his results at 6.30 am, drove him at 8 to school to talk to staff. On the way home I was gagging for a visit to our local greasy spoon but heroically resisted. However, I'm now having a very large celebratory vodka and slimline tonic. DH is out buying a kebab for us (DS out with chums) I will not eat the pitta. Well I don't think I will. Grin

QueenofHibernia · 17/08/2017 21:01

I think not sleeping makes everything ten times harder. I think once school is back and you're back in routine everything will fall into place.

Day Four. Not fantastic, not awful. 1042 cals, 90g net carbs. Hoping to nail the 800 tomorrow.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 17/08/2017 21:36

tobee congrats to your DS! Enjoy your celebratory vodka 🍸
We're back at school and I must admit I find BSD much easier when we're in our normal routine. 782 cals 67.8g carbs.

LittlePearl · 17/08/2017 22:40

I'm on week 2, stuck to the plan in the recipe book last week and the meals were all lush, lost about 4lbs so I'm happy.

BUT last night it was cauliflower cheese and tonight skinny aubergine lasagne and although they both tasted ok they were basically pieces of veg in a thin soup. I followed the recipes to the letter..... has anyone else had this problem? I've had a friend staying and it was a bit embarrassing dishing up something that needed to be eaten with a spoon instead of a knife and fork Grin

blueskyinmarch · 18/08/2017 04:54

Littlepearl. I made the skinny aubergine lasagne and ate it with a knife and fork. I have no idea how yours was thin and soupy. The slices of aubergine are long, like lasagne sheets I guess and needed to be but.

I wouldn't have served it to guests though. It isn't a dish that presents well.

Oblomov17 · 18/08/2017 07:45

Tobee, well done to ds. And phew! For you!! Gin
Pearl, I too find that these lasagne type meals are a bit hit and miss. Not to be presented. Is it because these courgettes and aubergines sometimes are so watery that they make the sauce go grim? So more flour in the cheese sauce to compensate? And taking off the tin foil and letting it cook uncovered more/not using tin foil at all and cook it for longer and slower on a lower temperature?

Oblomov17 · 18/08/2017 07:56

Bear, I haven't done very well either.
I fasted on Wednesday till dinner. I prepared courgette and halloumi, mushroom pepper and cherry tomato marinated kebabs. I made 4. 2 for that night and 2 for the next. Huge they were. Delicious.
But Dh bought home a paella, and he wanted some of my kebabs so I had some of his paella.
Plus a foxes classic chocolate bar. My favourite. Why did I do that? 841

Yesterday I fasted. I had made a huge mistake at work and spent hours on the phone to Sage and the inland revenue so in anger went and bought myself a lunch of salad with coronation chicken, from the deli/sandwich shop.

But then I came home and ate:
A packet of wotsits, a finger of twix and a mini pack of Oreo biscuits!!

Followed by marinated ribs in honey, soy and 5 spice, which weren't that nice. With new potatoes.

Had huge discussion/semi argument with Dh about dieting and weight loss surgery offered to him.
Then I ate 4 Aldi chocolate covered cookies. 516 for that alone. Total 1383

So uhh yeah, right. Not going so well then .....Hmm

Oblomov17 · 18/08/2017 08:22

Plan B.
Make yourself a big salad: ham, tomatoes, cucumber and lots of radishes.

I've been eating a lot of radishes, since they had them in a lot of the Tenerife salads. Are they ok, carb wise?

Oblo I stand in solidarity with you! (Perhaps if we tell them all they look beautiful and skinny they will let us stay in strict club??? Pleeeeeeeaaassseee?????)

It's hard in the holidays, I need a routine but so do the kids. I have 2 boys and a teenager- they eat all the time. I didn't even buy 'goodies' this week as such, just crisps (they are safe around me) one pack of dark choc digestives and mountains of fruit. So why oh why I couldn't restrain myself I do not know.

The toddler stayed at mums last night, and I'm hoping he's behaved himself sufficiently to be able to stay again tonight as his night waking habits leave a lot to be desired right now and we're exhausted!

Just popping in to say hello. Bear, good to see you and Tobee well done to ds.

It's been 2 weeks since the end of the 8 week phase so I thought I'd come and say hello.

Bad news first - I've gained back around 4/5 lbs. however, I have reintroduced carbs, eaten out loads and allowed myself to have all those forbidden things without hugely overeating so that 5lbs isn't fat I don't think, just water weight which I'm hoping will level off . I've also been off work for a week so have lost the structure which I find helpful. I forget to drink water when I'm not at my desk as well.

Good news, I miss it! I find myself genuinely looking for lower carb options. Of all the various bits of cake/bread I've allowed myself I think I've really relished 2. I have done heaps more exercise as I've had a little more energy. I can poo well again!

So my initial conclusion is that whilst I need a few more good carbs than on the 8 weeks, I am happy to scale them back. I will aim for around 100g or less on a week day which I think is easily obtainable. Hopefully that will give me a nice balance.

Nice food I have found to share: Lidl have some raw king prawns in seasoning (garlic and sweet chilli). Only tried the sweet chilli so far but nice. Also went to gbk today and had a naked falafel burger. It was lovely, filling and from what I could make out, not awfully high in cals. A bit carby but I imagine meat eaters could go naked really nicely there. Genuinely was impressed with what I got I must say.

Anyway, good luck all and power on through!

LittlePearl · 18/08/2017 14:24

Thanks Blue and Oblo - I think maybe it was all the water in the uncooked veg, and I assembled it a day in advance and left it in the fridge so maybe that didn't help. Next time I'll cook the veg a bit first.

The cauli cheese was really nice actually, despite looking a bit unappealing and my friend said she preferred it to standard cauli cheese.....and she's not one to be polite for the sake of it, haha!

Just had a lovely Greek salad and trying the chicken korma tonight, wish me luck.

yumyumpoppycat · 18/08/2017 15:08

Well done Phyllis sounds like you are figuring out the sweet spot for you dietwise.

ahem {dons spectacles flicks through strict club rule book} Good news Bear! Appendix 3.56ai states that eating biscuits whilst sleep deprived by a toddler is totally understandable and counts as a victory if some healthy food is eaten the following day.

Oblomov you are doing really well you have had a fast and a 800 cal day in the summer hols!- Radishes surely have negative calories Grin apparently there are only 4g carbs in a cup full.

I have had a mini muffin and a skinny latte at costa today with kids so think it's only Aplace who gets to be slim and beautiful Grin Oh well Am planning to exercise and feel good, and haven't used up all my cals so not a disaster.

yumyumpoppycat · 18/08/2017 15:09

Fingers crossed salad is a success Pearl!

tobee · 18/08/2017 17:37

Oblomov I got 1g carbs per 40g radishes (about 4?) on my app

APlaceOnTheCouch · 18/08/2017 17:39

Forgive me strictclub for I have sinned too . . . Blush
I was supposed to be working from home today but I woke up dizzy and with a headache. Got DS to school then came back and went to sleep for 2 hours. Woke up and ate half a giant bag of Sensations crisps. They weren't even particularly nice. Then DH brought me in a small tub of ice cream. So I've used up over half my calories and nearly all my carbs on rubbish and I'm still starving.
I bought some konjac noodles earlier in the week so I think I'm going to make them with a cheese sauce and some kind of protein and pretend it's just the same as mac and cheese.

yumyumpoppycat · 18/08/2017 18:04

Good save with the konjac noodles Aplace. Low carb mac and cheese! I had the opposite fibre problem to you today - my fibre was showing at 23 which I thought was fab until I realised 6g were from sausages which was clearly wrong!

Prob closing kitchen at 1000 cals, but had a big dinner with at least 4 portions of veg - roasted carrot (tiny bit), red onion, courgette and yellow pepper, wilted spinach with a smidge of butter, and some dry fried cauliflower rice from Morrisons. Also 1 morrisons turkey sausage (83 cals 5 carbs - bit rubbish but nice with all the other bits) and 1/3 of a pack of Cajun chicken breast (143 cals and 4 carbs). Haven't really had dinner this week so was nice.

Also had 1 slice of lower carb hovis seeded bread for bf as it was reduced to 55p for date in waitrose. It had over 5g of fibre and protein and was yum with green leaves, egg and smoked salmon.

blueskyinmarch · 18/08/2017 19:03

My food for the day is going to come in and just over 1000 calories as I am splurging on a big steak tonight. However there is a bottle of red wine winking at me invitingly too. I know I can have some as I am trying not to 'diet' just eat less some days and more others, following a healthy Mediterranean diet, but I find I can't shake the diet mentality of being 'bad'.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/08/2017 19:30

I've heard mixed reviews of these konjac products- I do miss noodles so I'd be interested to hear the tried and tested recipes before I take the plunge. I bought some in tesco called oomi noodles which were made with fish protein- they were delicious and authentically noodle-ish but no saving on calories from normal ones. Konjac are calorie free aren't they? Probably high fibre too (aren't they made of indigestible fibre??)

I have spent the day painting our hall stairs and landing (go me!) and now I'm starving. I've been on plan, avocado and ham for breakfast, salad for lunch and dinner will be a steak and salad, but not calorie counted and probably waaaaaaay over on the calories. And I will be having wine tonight as the boy is at mother's again (and the little wretch slept through while there last night, no monkey business at all, so clearly all this bad behaving is for my benefit). I had forgotten how draining these toddlers years are.

QueenofHibernia · 18/08/2017 23:53

There must be something in the air today! I had a takeaway tonight, but went for smaller portions than I usually would. Came in at 1224. That's not great for day 5, but I checked on MFP and my average calories for the past five days is 975, which isn't too bad I suppose.

It's much better than I usually do. I'm just a little disheartened because I like to things "right".

APlaceOnTheCouch · 19/08/2017 09:05

I decided against my fake mac and cheese because my headache came back and I didn't want to trigger a migraine. Instead I made sesame turkey with noodle stir fry. the turkey needed to be used up
It was surprisingly good. And based on this recipe Sesame tuna with noodle
bear I like the Barenaked konjac noodles. They provide a good base and you can eat lots of them for not many calories. Sometime I just want a big plate of food that takes more than 5 minutes to eat.
Finished yesterday on 803 cals with 78 carbs.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 19/08/2017 09:10

Oops, I forgot - bear here's the nutritional information from the BareNaked Noodles:
Nutrition Facts: (per 100g of noodles) Energy 12kcal Protein 0.3 Fat 0.1 Carbohydrate 0.9 Sugars 0.1 Dietary Fibre 3.4g Sodium 2mg
