Blood sugar diet thread 7

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Hello!

Strict club postponed till Tuesday for me as we are still away!

I think the only thing between me and total ruin is the sheer number of stairs in my mum's house as I seem to still be hovering around the same point on the scales...

I'm kinda looking forward to a bit of control though! And some booze-free time!

JigglyTuff · 19/08/2017 18:51

I think I'll join Strict Club next week. I've done my 8 weeks, lost 11 kilos and now I'm taking a couple of weeks where I'm going to try and stick to the principle of BSD and not gain weight. Then back on once school starts again.

We've just been on holiday and I ate chips and bread and drank cocktails. Not weighed myself since Monday so will assess damage tomorrow. Slightly scared ...

tobee · 20/08/2017 00:07

Strict club to be tested tomorrow. Am attending small nephew birthday party picnic tomorrow.

yumyumpoppycat · 20/08/2017 01:32

Pretty good day today, lots of veg, but I am completely unable to go to waitrose without drinking the free latte on prinicpal, so that brought me over to 900.

Hopefully there will be some good options tomorrow Tobee - fingers crossed for sunshine.

Enjoy the rest of your break flighty, maybe the one story lodges have been to blame for some of my holiday gains last year - there could be a market for town house weight loss hols.

Fingers crossed for weigh in on Monday Jiggly, hopefully it will only be a couple of lbs to re-lose.

A place I am seriously impressed by your 800 on Friday!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/08/2017 22:05

Today: food- good (ish), lots of on plan stuff, Dh made pea and ham soup and also cooked a gammon in beans thing which is his speciality obviously I now need to wash every single utensil and pan in the entire kitchen as he has cooked twice today.

But I've eaten far too many calories. Picked and nibbled a bit. Hardly any fibre. Tiny slither of homemade cake with the dc. So I'm half in strict club/half out. I'm like the guy hovering outside the AA meeting, wondering whether to step inside.....

I'm out tomorrow visiting my sister in law and my tiny little nephew- taking a picnic so that should eliminate any temptations of lunch, although inevitably the dc will have ice cream or something else. I just need to actually do it really- i know I don't need to graze, but I just sorta do. I guess that because I do try each day even if I eventually fall means I'm still keeping the calories relatively low, so will probably maintain until September- but I don't really want to maintain! Only 2 weeks holiday left! I'm done now, I'd quite like to get on with September and back to school!

I managed to stick to strictclub yesterday but today was a bit of a disaster. I finished at 1097 cals and 111g carbs. It's my own fault. I had salad for lunch but I didn't make enough so by 3pm I was starving. We were out all afternoon and evening. When we finally got back (around 7pm) I ended up getting takeaway and eating chocolates. I've been strict for about a week so I'll be interested to see if it's had any impact on the scales tomorrow.

bear that sounds like a good plan for the picnic. I was desperate to get back into the school routine. One week in and I'm thinking fondly of holidays again!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2017 07:30

Are you in Scotland then place? I have to recalibrate my whole mental picture of you now!

Can i join you please? I read the book over the weekend and started yesterday. I don't have diabetes but I've put on so much weight and I need to start addressing that.

I joined the gym last week and the 'fitness and health assessment' was not a happy experience. I had been telling myself I needed to move a bit more but it's clear it's more drastic than that.

DH is joining me but has a long work trip to the US in the middle of the 8 weeks which is going to be hard for him. Still, anything is better than nothing right?

I came in at 812 yesterday and 43g carbs. I didn't find yesterday too bad but I'm worried today will be hard as I'm already feeling hungry.

I'm going to try and stick to two meals per day as (usually) I'm not that hungry in the morning and if I do eat breakfast I'm starving by 11am.

Off to M&S later to stock up on a few nice but on plan things.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2017 08:22

Welcome spaghetti, sounds like you had a good first day! I could do with a few days at 800 cals.

The boy has returned from mother's- slept really well for her, so we were pleased when he went to bed with no fuss last night, thinking perhaps he's over his phase.....nope. Cue 3 wake ups between 11 and 1.30, and another one at 4.30, and then up for the day at 6.45. Gah, so tired!! Tired and insulin go hand in hand for me and all the insulin resistance symptoms come out in force- but I'm not going to give in to it.

This weekend we have a party to go to, but it's exactly one year since I went to a wedding (with the sand group of people) wearing an incredible tight Lycra dress. I'm a good half stone/stone heavier than that now and there's no way I would wear it this weekend so I was feeling pretty peed off with myself yesterday. Aside from extra lbs, the lbs I do have are considerably less toned than a year ago!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 21/08/2017 10:32

Welcome spaghetti You've had a very good start.
bear you will need to go back and re-read all my posts in a Scottish accent Wink

SpaghettiAlphabetti · 21/08/2017 10:33

thenewaveragebear I blame my weight gain on my son's terrible sleep. I weigh more now than I did after giving birth and a lot more than I did six months after giving birth. I've gone from a bit overweight after having a baby to a BMI of 29.4.

Tiredness makes you eat more and want to move less. It's a bad cycle. I have a very responsible job and I found it really easy to justify a load of caffeine and KitKats to get me through the afternoon on the basis I needed to function at work.

He's 3.5 now and a lot better which in turn means I need to sort myself out.

It's so tough though.

SpaghettiAlphabetti · 21/08/2017 10:35

Ps I also have a nearly 6 year old DD so it's been a long time since I wasn't overweight if I'm honest.... I can't wear my engagement ring at the moment and my wedding ring would have to be cut off. I'm 3 stone heavier than when I got married.

I'm really quite ashamed of that.

yumyumpoppycat · 21/08/2017 10:46

Well done spaghetti!

Bear your ds is making up for lost time Shock could it be something environmental - mattress, noisy neighbours, flushing toilet? I am sure you have thought of all that, I am just remembering how sucky it is being woken regularly my ds took years to sleep through and then would wake really early. Dc3 (6) still comes into our room occasionally for a cuddle and its nice but I always feel tired the next day - he probably thinks you are more worth waking up for than his grandparents Flowers

I did the same comparison and despite strict club for a week I am up 4lbs on this time last year, 10lbs up on March this year. I am also annoyed because I didn't weigh myself last sun when I started #SC but I weighed in on wed or thu, then on sat and sun and my weight hasn't moved over that time. I haven't been 100% strict but strict enough I think that the scales should have moved in 4 days - esp so near the beginning of an effort.

yumyumpoppycat · 21/08/2017 10:54

Sorry cross post - actually I have stayed up late the last couple of nights faffing around spaghetti so maybe that's why the scales aren't moving for me. This morning I was so pissed off I left the kids watching Nickelodeon after BF and I ate a cornetto watching latest episode Game of thrones for my breakfast Blush I honestly have been eating healthily this week so not the end of the world and I stopped at the cornetto which is a bonus!

yumyumpoppycat · 21/08/2017 10:59

PPS Spaghetti don't be ashamed of your weight, you have been doing what you needed to do with stressful job and young children, a huge % of women are in the same situation.

This diet does work too don't be put off by my moaning - I was obese, pretty much 3 stone ow at heaviest after children and am now hopefully still clinging onto the healthy category thanks mainly to BSD - I just want to get more comfortably into the healthy range.

SpaghettiAlphabetti · 21/08/2017 13:07

That's really encouraging to hear yumyumpoppycat. I hope I can do the same. 3 stone would take me right to the middle of the healthy BMI range.

Even 2 stone would take me to a point where I can stand to be in photos again!

Four days of static scale would have me pissed off too. You just want to see your efforts rewarded don't you? It's motivating when the numbers keep going down.

At a soft play place to keep out the rain. Had a three egg tomato omelette for lunch which sounds nice but wasn't. The cook here isn't very good.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2017 16:34

Thanks all, it can seem like a very lonely place when you have a
toddler who doesn't sleep. I'm surrounded by smug people whose babies sleep through from 2 weeks old and here's me, desperately trying to get my nearly 2 year old to just stay in bed. Tired and insulin resistance go hand in hand for me and i definitely reach first for the coffee, and then for food, when I'm exhausted. I don't think the coffee does me any good either, but I'm not going to consider cutting back on that until the dc are back to school! And I totally agree about the moving less; I also just move at a slower pace and rarely get my heart rate up.

Been out with my sister in law, nice walk round Stratford and a bit of lunch. Resisted ice cream and cake, but did have 2 milky coffees and had a piece of cheese and a peach when I got home. So will probably be way over on the calories again, but within carbs.

My Dd was a rubbish sleeper for years, too bear and everyone else's slept brilliantly from day 1. You just have to ignore them but it's highly frustrating.

Ha! Have just had the most hilarious meal. I went to my sister's who was having a family meal for another nephew birthday. She served a starter of blue cheese risotto followed by lasagne and birthday cake. GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinAnd alcohol too!!!

Back to strict club tomorrow (?)

Flightywoman · 22/08/2017 07:53

Home from hols, 8lbs gain in 20 days, but given the sheer quantity of booze and add on the amount of bread I ate in the last few days and I'll take that!

Strict club has begun - eggs for breakfast, carbs BEGONE!

I wonder how well I can do this week...

Oblomov17 · 22/08/2017 07:59

Welcome spaghetti. Flighty, that's not bad, after such a holiday. Bear, tiredness/lack of sleep is an absolute killer!!

This Hovis lower carb range - about 4 or 5 different loaves I think, came up on my Facebook page. I might give it a try soon, just to see what it is like. I don't know how low carb it actually is though, compared to normal bread.

Just been sorting through some old boxes of papers etc and found a while stack of women's realms from 1969! Look at the diet page- brutal! She followed the diet for a month, and look at her! She also did 5 minutes exercise morning and evening! Hardly recognisable!

Incidentally, if you look at the menus, barring the low cal bread clearly sponsored! ' Slimcea' then it's basically a low cal/low carb plan with lots of meat, fruit and veg!

Bear I can't decide if that is reassuring or depressing how similar it is to now!

Tobee that was quite a meal Grin reminds me of the episode of friends - beef good jam good custard good!

Oblomov I like the seedy one - the fibre is really high. It's slightly cakey and the slices are a wee bit smaller than normal but nice with eggs,

Flighty I agree 8lbs not so bad see you on strict club tomorrow! I am off the wagon again so a super strict strict day is needed!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/08/2017 18:47

I think with regards to the diet advice it sort of shows that the real damage was done in the 80's 90's and naughties with "diet products" - clearly there was an understanding that sugar wasn't great, there's ads for sweeteners in there as well which surprised me as I thought they were relatively recent inventions. The horrible thing I think is the way they subtley link 'overweight' or 'plump' with 'unattractive', and create an understanding that people (and yourself) will look at you and critique every single bit of you negatively. Need to change that, that bit's a bit plump, that could do with slimming/trimming. It's like the voice of one's own self esteem, picking out every flaw. I guess modern mags do this still, but in other ways, like pointing out reality stars and their 'unsightly' blemishes. Horrible really.

OP posts:
SpaghettiAlphabetti · 22/08/2017 19:14

Fascinating bear. I wonder what the author would have made of DH 'slimming' with me given the housewife vs family meal plan?!

790 calories and a gym visit yesterday so that was a good day! On course for just under 800 today once I've eaten my steak and roasted veg.

Trying to capitalise on initial enthusiasm....!

yumyumpoppycat · 22/08/2017 20:02

Well done spaghetti

It's becoming even more depressing now Bear! That is what I do to myself if I look in a full length mirror. At least health is part of our goals.
