Blood sugar diet thread 7

Here's thread seven for the Blood Sugar Diet followers.

It's 5 weeks and 5 days until school breaks up (may vary by region!) so let's get those bodies lean for Summer!

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

I had my run in the end. Well not a run, a walk with a few faster bits. It was lovely out there and I felt all wafty and free.

Good day today. Worked from home so spent the afternoon on my laptop in the garden. I am making DH laugh as every time I eat I keep saying how nice my food is. Shittake mushroom and tofu stir fry tonight which was lush.

My question of the day is when does the rapid weight loss subside. The problem with daily weighing is that you can get too excited and with another lb off I think it must slow soon and the mental battle will
get worse. I have less than 10lbs to lose now and would actually just be chuffed with half a stone so I suspect I will stay on the first phase until the weight loss slows right down - I'm thinking I will therefore revaluate at the end of week 4. I have a day off plan on Saturday night so will be interested to see the impact of that.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2017 21:20

Phyllis that's the best thing about this diet, your food tastes amazing because your not spoiling your appetite with snacks and sugar. It's like once the sugar goes, you can taste the real flavour of food again.

I have ended the day on 1011 cals but only 30g carbs do that will do for me. I've also walked a lot today, and everywhere I walk involves pushing a huge heavy pushchair with a 28lb toddler in it and dragging a 5 year old as well usually! I've drunk a lot, eaten well, and feel pretty good.

Tomorrow I have a picnic with ds and our friends at the park, and Friday I have a charity coffee morning I'm hosting- but I actually feel surprisingly not worried about the cake on offer. It's our wedding anniversary this weekend but as we have no babysitter there will be no fancy meal out, so again, nothing too concerning! I will be doing my regular wedding anniversary activity- going into the loft and getting out my wedding dress and flouncing around in it like a princess for a few minutes. Tis great fun. Dh and the children always look at me like I'm certifiable.,...

Bear what a fab idea! My girls would love it if I did that! Have a lovely swirl

APlaceOnTheCouch · 14/06/2017 23:53

bear you've reminded me of the Friends episode where they have a girls' night and all wear wedding dresses although they obviously weren't on BSD My friends and I used to joke about recreating it. It seems such a shame to have a lovely dress and only wear it for one day Grin

I'm getting married next year, was wondering what I would do with my dress afterwards - thank you bear that's one thing I can cross of my list Grin

PinkBlossomTree · 15/06/2017 08:01

Good job on your excersize Phyllis.

Are you still loosing quite rapidly?

I've got just over 10lbs also and seem to have hit a bit of a plateau.

Your question about when it stops being rapid, I can only talk for myself but personally I find at some point in each stone I hit a wall can't loose and then it goes and weight loss continues. A lot of people on other groups mention the whoosh effect not sure if that's what I experience but it's like your body needs to catch up with itself.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2017 09:53

I think traditionally everyone finds that they get a bit of a plateau around week 4/5/6 ish, as the body has then shed all its hidden fat, (visceral?) around the organs etc. You might then find your weightloss slows to a pound or two a week. The difference is, hopefully, that that 2lb a week is easier to lose because you're not craving sugar, bread, you don't binge, you feel so much better etc (as opposed to the usual diet clubs where you can lose 2lb a week but you feel miserable and half starved).

When you hit that plateau that's the time to re-read the book, concentrate on drinking more water, perhaps doing the mindfulness or hiit workout etc, mix up your food and menus, and generally whizz up the plan again so that you don't lose motivation.

People talk about this 'whoosh' phenomenon, where after the plateau you suddenly lose loads overnight (she lost two stone in a day. A day.- Peter Kay!!) but I never experienced that in my first round probably because I lost my motivation and didn't follow my own advice!!!

Ha ha. You lot are WELL naughty!!
You never even finished off the old thread!!

Get back there and post 8 silly pictures or comments, to finish it off!!

Flightywoman · 15/06/2017 11:11

I think the most important thing to remember is that even at 800 cals a day weight loss isn't linear.

But, when you don't lose you're still preparing to lose iyswim, the WOE is still creating a deficit and at some point that will have an impact - it sort of has to!

Oblomov17 · 15/06/2017 11:12

Bear, you are further along in this 'process' than I am, because I still crave crisps, chocolate and wine.

I have lost 2lbs though. So my plateau from last week has finally gone. Admittedly only a tiny bit.

And yes, to answer Pink about maintenance, I think you are supposed to go 'mediterranean diet' , is what MM suggested: and stick to less carbs generally, allowing yourself the occasional roast potato or French stick, or whatever you crave. and then do 800, if you notice your clothes getting tight.

And re the rapid weight loss subsiding, that Phyllis asked about, I think as Bear said, week 5 or 6, it has to as the body gets more used to it. That's what happened to most of us, didn't it? I cant quite recall.

yumyumpoppycat · 15/06/2017 11:23

Hmm quite a few folk have a week 3 or 4 blip....so basically pretty much at any point.

My weigh in this am was disappointing but I am exercising (sometimes I lose weight better when not exercising weirdly) Bootcamp style dvd 22 min hard corps and prob more like 1000 cal mark, and not reaaaaaly low carb enough (although not that far off) so technically not really doing the BSD. Can I stay anyway for inspiration please?!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 15/06/2017 11:38

yumyum I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing anymore but still post to try to keep vaguely on track Wink
I did wonder if we should have a BSD maintainers thread so we I don't confuse new starts with our my haphazard approach to maintenance . . .but I don't know if there are enough of us post the 8 weeks to make it worthwhile.

Oblomov17 · 15/06/2017 12:33

I have just had the most mahoosive lunch: leftover chicken curry and leftover celeriac mash. Was the most tasty thing I've eaten in months. Spicy and tonnes of pepper in the mash.

I don't do any exercise!! Blush Naughty Ob!

yumyumpoppycat · 15/06/2017 12:40

I wondered that too Aplace, I love the posts from people fresh to the diet, full of enthusiasm and good spots for new food ideas, hearing their results etc but do worry I might put people off!

Oblomov that is a really good idea I might try that, saw celeriac in morrisons today. But no low carb bread Sad

tobee · 15/06/2017 12:50

Mum that looks lovely, Oblomov. I love celeriac but it's one ugly f#%er! And a bit of a pain to prepare. Supposed to be a hearty winter veg but fortunately on sale now!

tobee · 15/06/2017 12:51

Mum? Autocorrect meant to say mmmmm!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2017 13:19

I don't exercise either, except I walk everywhere and am constantly on the go - i never raise my pulse or work up a sweat, but I just constantly move. I need a fidget spinner!

I'm not sure that I am further on with the 'not craving' - someone up thread said their attitude to certain foods is like they just don't, and I'm like that with pasta, bread, rice, chips, potatoes, crisps etc. I still lust after sweets and chocolate almost daily, especially at certain times of the month, but by not having them it seems to just give me the breathing space to just say no as the craving really does go after a few moments. I am very aware of my total lack of quality control and that also helps me say no, as there is no such thing as one square of chocolate in my world. When I gave up smoking (and sometimes I still want one) my mantra was 'I may want a cigarette but I don't want to be a smoker, so I can't have one' and I guess I able to transfer this over to sugary stuff- most of the time. Alcohol, I don't crave all week because we don't drink in the week, but come Friday and Saturday I usually always drink at least a glass of wine. I seem to be doing quite well this time but I think that's because I just really really want it this time. I'm sick of being the fat one everywhere I go, I'm sick of people saying things like 'but you've just had a baby two years ago' and 'oh but you've got 3 children' and the absolute worst, 'you've got pretty eyes/face/feet/elbows if only you weren't so fat'. I don't know how long my motivation will last, probably until I'm next due on, but for now it seems to be working!

Oblomov17 · 15/06/2017 14:55

I too was wondering that Couch and YumYum. Whether I might put the Newbies off with my blase, non strict 'ways'.

But I'm not sure there's enough of us, post 8 weeks, to keep a thread going?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2017 15:36

I see us old timers as being like the prefects, we know all the good places to smoke and snog and all the newbies are both simultaneously in awe of us and terrified of us.

The other downside of a maintenance thread is that no one really seems to have worked out how maintenance actually works....I put on 10lb in maintenance which is why I'm back on the 8 weeks all over again a year later!

OP posts:
tobee · 15/06/2017 15:47

Yes, that's me. I like being guided by the old timers! I might be a rebellious in private but like to confess now and then. I need you lot to keep me on the straight & narrow. I also do awe. Smile

Oblomov17 · 15/06/2017 16:06

I agree Bear.
Who exactly/how many of us actually Knows how maintenance is going to work?

Is there even anyone who has reached and then maintained? I don't even know if anyone.

Actually that's something that MM needs to address. Because actually, that's NOT good!!

I've never reached maintenance. I lost a lot, but never lost that last 1/2 stone to get to my ideal weight. So I've never been on maintenance. Then I put some back on, so I'm back on it, still trying to get to ideal weight.

PinkBlossomTree · 15/06/2017 16:54

There is a maintenance page on Facebook BUT you have to be a member of the original page for 8 weeks before you can join. I've only been on the page a week so that's no good to me.

I agree MM needs to bring out a follow on book.

The thought of maintenance petrifies me tbh as in 10 years I have never managed to maintain my weight for more than a couple of weeks.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 15/06/2017 16:57

I reached my target weight earlier this year. I feel as though I'm sort of maintaining - give or take 3-5lbs when I have parties/nights out/over-indulge. But I haven't actually worked out what I'm doing - whether if I looked at it over a week am I doing 5:2? (because 5:2 didn't work for me at all when I tried it before) Or am I either sticking to 800cals and higher carbs? Or higher cals but 50 carbs? Maybe I actually need to sit down with my logger and work it out.

Flibbertyjibbit · 15/06/2017 17:14

I like the mixed group of old timers/newbies because you have the experience that us newbies don't.

I went off plan slightly today, I know we are not meant to be having processed foods but this yummy taste the difference scotch egg caught my eye. Got distracted by excitement that it was only 11g carbs so thought yes this will be my lunch....Went to log it in my fitness pal to find I had just consumed 50% of my 800 calories Shock so I had to change my dinner plans to salad! Will still be just under at 790 cals and 22g carbs for the day. Back to low carb med tomorrow. oooops!

tobee · 15/06/2017 17:18

To those who have done this diet, had a (longish) break and then went back on it did you have a repeat of feeling terrible (spaced out, faint etc) during the first week?
