Hello everyone waves
I am starting today! Day 1.

Myself and my husband are giving the Bsd a good go for the next 8 weeks. There are hurdles already - a holiday to centre parcs and a wedding to attend but I'm determined to see it through the best we can.
We recently lost our baby and I'm in the awful stage of looking very pregnant but not being pregnant or having a newborn to explain. It's been awful.
Anyway, I need something quite drastic as I would love to attend the wedding feeling lovely instead of fat and sad.
So That's us. My parents are also doing the BSD having read through my books while staying with us last week. Dads gone out and bought his own set and they're already healthy competition as they started last week and mums already half a stone down!
Send me your fave recipe ideas - I love to cook so would be keen to try them all out
😊

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/06/2017 10:21

Oblomov it's so frustating when that happens Flowers
My weight is fluctuating madly at the moment. It changed by 5lbs over the course of last week, probably related to it being TOTM and to my having two days where I was wildly over on calories.
It's just under 3 weeks to our holiday and my new holiday dresses are size 10 (yeah! and they currently fit) so I need to get back on top of BSD. I've not been brave enough to try on my swimming costumes or bikinis yet.
tbh I've never been brave enough to wear a bikini in public since I was 8 years old and that probably won't change this year but I like to have one just in case

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/06/2017 10:25

KTD27 I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers and well done for starting BSD.
My favourite recipes include lots of soups eg broccoli and cauliflower; cauliflower, chilli, carrot and lemon, etc. Jamie Oliver traybakes are quick and easy. I also love the chicken and red pepper curry from the BSD book/website; and a tuna and pea fish pie that I found online on a low carb site.

Flibbertyjibbit · 12/06/2017 10:33

Sorry to hear that oblomov, I'm not sure if this is correct but possibly the hot chocolate and biscuit kicked you out of ketosis. I have read on the low-carb bootcamp that week 3 and 4 it is common not to lose anything. KOKO if you can, like Pink said maybe measurements will have changed.

Hi KTD27, waves back. so sorry to hear of your loss Flowers I have a wedding to attend at the end of the 8 weeks so also hoping to feel lovely instead of fat. I am experimenting with recipes not in the book, our fave has been a goats cheese and pea omelette. The other day I made bolognaise and served it with boodles from sainsburies (butternut squash spiralized) That was very yummy.

DP is off on a 4 week work trip tomorrow so my challenge is to stay on plan while he is away. It should technically be easier as I won't have to cook him a carb option but being on my own I get lazy and revert to easy carby options.

Bringmewineandcake · 12/06/2017 10:37

Bad week here, I let everything go including my skincare routine! It only worked out to a 3/4lb gain over the week so my plan is to lose 2lb this week to get that off and a bit more. Back in the zone.

Oblomov17 · 12/06/2017 11:48

Welcome KT. So sorry for your loss. That's must be so hard. So, lets get you slimmer and at least feeling better at imminent wedding.

Pink, yes you are right, I haven't taken any measurements for ages. Dh said I was looking 'trimmer'. But, I so wanted the actual weight loss.

And Flipperty, you could well be right, those bits kicked me out of ketosis. yes, that could have happened.

BUT, even if that WAS the case. How come I didn't lose any weight on a VERY restricted calorie diet? Don't most people eat 2000 per day? We are all trying for 800, right?
Last week I had many days at 1000, one at 730 and one at 535. How the FUCK can you not lose, on THAT? Hmm

What do you think Bear, how is that possible?

Oh, btw, we need a new thread soon. Anyone want to start it? We need a good witty title.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/06/2017 11:50

Oblomov I know when my sleep pattern is erratic, I don't lose and also when I let my eating window extend.
although knowing that and actually adapting accordingly are two different things for me!

Oh ok. well I'm still fed up!!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/06/2017 12:23

Me too
It's feeling like such a slog atm and DH just announced that he weighs much less than me.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2017 12:23

Morning all.
Ktd27 welcome to the group and I'm so sorry for your loss. Flowers

Oblo I don't know to be honest, you would think wouldn't you that the low calories would have an effect, they must do, but sometimes it just doesn't. Crap though! I agree with pp (flibberty I think) about ketosis although ketosis isn't an aim of this plan and the majority of people won't achieve it because even our low carb amount of 50g is still too high, plus the protein we eat is probably too high. With regards to the 2000 calories a day, I am yet to find someone whose tdee is 2000. I can't believe the government is still allowed to say 2000, as that figure is based on average person in moderately active lifestyle doing 30 mins exercise 5 (I think) times a week. If i ate 2000 calories every day I would definitely gain weight because I am idle Grin
MM does mention starvation mode but doesn't agree with it, but I still believe there must be some truth in it. Maybe it's a bit of that or some water retention.

I do know insulin resistance is a funny thing, and your insulin is affected by every other hormone. So, stressed out? Cortisol, affects insulin. Overtired? Affects insulin. Totm? Affects insulin. On the pill? Affects insulin. It's all in a fluctuating homeostatic cycle. If you were particularly insulin resistant, which could be why you wanted the biscuit in the first place as it increases carb cravings, then it might have had more of an effect than just its calories IYSWIM? Still crap though. Keep at it, because it will show eventually, but it's oh so tempting to think 'screw it' and sabotage your efforts.

I weighed in at end of week 1 a tidy 5lb down. I did manage to rein myself in somewhat and didn't drink on Saturday night and stuck to plan yesterday which is something of an NSV as I am a terrible weekend dieter. So while I did regain a tiny amount from mid-week I essentially maintained over the weekend and still lived. This is my optimum week of my cycle for weightloss so I'm going at it properly again this week, hope to get myself firmly in the 11's as I'm still hovering about on the cusp of 12st and the smallest faux pas sends me back up there! It's not good for my mojo.

Flightywoman · 12/06/2017 12:28

I've had that too Oblomov and it is SO disheartening.

For me it feels different when its other diets because the margins are narrow and the variables can be squeezed every which way.

And there's still that lingering thing in the back of my mind that a deficit of 3500 over a week or 500 a day SHOULD give a loss of 1lb. Even though, according to Zoe Harcombe, there is NO scientific research or basis for this.

But with BSD being so much stricter I just feel "why isn't it working?" It SHOULD, I'm not bingeing or over-eating. And yet, and yet...

Intellectually I know weight loss isn't linear, but with all this effort it damn well should be!

Oblomov17 · 12/06/2017 12:58

Thank you Bear and Flighty. I know you both make sense.

Lunch. I haven't even bothered with the puy lentils. This is the only thing I've eaten today. So far.

Flibbertyjibbit · 12/06/2017 13:17

I've just made cream cheese pancakes for brunch (2oz cream cheese, 2 eggs, 1/2 tsp vanilla essence) they are amazing! You have to make them very small & thin, like welsh cake diameter but thinner. I served them with strawberries and a squirt of cream.

PinkBlossomTree · 12/06/2017 13:36

Oblo - just a thought but have you been drinking enough water?

I do think this can sometimes happen. Last year I was following a 800 cal shake diet and was a group on Facebook. A lovely lady posted that she had drank 3L per day and stuck to it 100% but no loss. Everyone advised to stick with it, don't get disheartened and see what happened the following week. The following week she lost quite a lot.

So I would say the same. It is really disheartening but just go for it this week and see if the scales catches up with you.

Also take your measurements today. I do mine the same day I weigh in. I've had a crappy weightloss this week but measurements say 1 inch on bust tummy thighs and ass.

Stick it out, drink drink drink and see how next week goes.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2017 15:57

Made my butternut lasagne for tea tonight. It looks and smells amazing, but 1/6 of this is a mahoosive 300 cals (and ideally I'd want slightly more than 1/6!) so I'm hoping it lives up to expectations. I can't really see how to reduce that either, as there's already quite limited cheese, and I used 50/50 lean meat to high fat.

Hi everyone thank you for the warm welcome.
Goats cheese omelette sounds amazing and bear that lasagne looks delicious!
I was super successful on low carb eating a few years ago - lost about 4 stone happily but I didn't once count calories. Having to sort of have both in mind is tricky!
Salmon and green veg for dinner tonight. I think lll keep it simple until I've got my head around it.

yumyumpoppycat · 12/06/2017 18:28

K2D27 Flowers You don't have to count carbs if you are fairly close to 800 on cals but its a good idea to avoid the obvious stuff like bread.

Oblomov have you tried the outfit on that you are wearing yet, scales really can lie - just give them a kick ;) Well done on good eating week.

I had an iffy day today but hopefully better tomorrow!

Flibberty those pancakes sound good.

yumyumpoppycat · 12/06/2017 18:31

posted too soon ... well done on 5lbs new average and new size 10 dresses a place! Hi to everyone else

Flightywoman · 12/06/2017 19:41

Welcome KTD!

I had a massive lie-in this morning so didn't have breakfast, some of last night's lamb meatballs for lunch and veggie chili for supper. I'm closing the kitchen food-wise on 554 calories.

My Monday is WI so usually a kind of cheat day, obviously not today!

I lost 1/2lb last week which is amazing given the mayhem of election night and Friday - it's really interesting what was mentioned earlier about sleep being one of the things that interfere with insulin, I have a sleep disorder so I must research this...

PhyllisWig · 12/06/2017 21:00

Hello all, welcome KT. Oblo that is so sucky. Happened to me a lot when I was calorie counting and I agree re 2000 cals being stupidly high. My maintenance tdee cals are around 1600 and the reason for my recent gain was constantly just exceeding that so 2000 is v much too high!

My find of the day is from Itsu. Can't do links but new range of noodle salads with zero noodles in them. I've checked the salmon and veggie ones out online and cals around 200 and carbs less than 9gs which I thought was quite tidy for lunch. You obviously will need to mortgage your house but nice to know there is an option out there at lunch which is a bit different.

I have been thinking about how to carry this on though (although not even at the end of week 1!). I do think that good carbs have a place in my diet. I think what this is teaching me is that portions can be small (although mine aren't huge these days anyway), they should for the most part be 'good' so brown rice/pasta etc. But I am going to want to go out for pizza, get a Chinese, have a slice of cake etc. So as and when I get there, what's the best way to manage that?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2017 21:13

To be honest Phyllis, the brown pasta /rice is no better than the White. It's going to be marginally slower digested, but it's negligible. Even 'whole grain' isn't really any better. I'd say use these very very sparingly if at all during the 8 weeks, and then in maintenance maybe more often. If you want the pizza, cake, chocolate then I'd allow it as a one off but rare treat and continue the basic principles of the plan for the majority of the time.
Things like quinoa, wild rice (black rice) etc can be used in the 8 weeks but again it's described by MM as a 'taste' and not the main ingredient of any dish. If you're planning your own menu then use the menu in the book for guidance, eg if he uses quinoa once a week then that's probably all you should do in your own recipes.

I say all this, but I know it's not always that simple, but that would be my advice/ ideal world scenario.

Bear with that lasagne I'd ditch the butternut squash and use celeriac or cauliflower instead. According to my app 100g of butternut squash is 36 cals and 8g carbs. Cauli is 29 cals and 4g Carbs. Celeriac is 18 cals and 3g Carbs and has a sweetness like the squash.

tobee · 12/06/2017 21:45

Ha! Now I've googled and it says something different. But the carbs still better. Anyway, I don't use that app much! Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2017 22:01

Tobee mine says 40 cals and 8g carbs. I used 400g for the whole thing and ate 1/6 so it was pretty small amounts anyway. I do like BN squash, never got on with Celeriac although I do like the sound of celeriac mash.

I am tempted tbh to ditch the meat from the lasagne, I made it with layers of meat, wilted spinach and cheese. I reckon a lighter cheese such as crumbled feta, spinach, maybe turkey mince? Perhaps with something Moroccan style seasoning? It was the beef mince that took the calories way over which meant I could only have a tiny portion. I could have eaten double!!!

Just seen a recipe for a sausage cassoulet on Facebook which I might try tomorrow.

Well after a disappointing total of 1.5 lbs lost after a week in which I went off piste 2 days, I have done 2 days of rigid compliance and plan to continue for the next 4 to see if I can get a whoosh.

Thanks for Itsu tip Phyllis. There's one next to the office and that will save me from the dry tuna nicoise I had from pret today
