Fasting / 5:2 diet

My big fat 800 calorie blood sugar diet diary, all welcome

I've started the 800 calorie Michael Mosley blood sugar diet today. I'm T2 diabetic, menopausal and need a sharp shock to do something about the way I eat.

Weight has crept up post surgeries over the past few years, I have low carbed before then caved in. I'm going to post what I eat and my progress on here as an incentive to stick to this for 8 weeks. Anyone else welcome to do the same.

Breakfast half a lavash bread, smear of tomato purée, lots of mushrooms and sprinkle of grated cheese. Very filling. 189 cal

Lunch. Little gem lettuce leaves with bacon, avocado, cucumber. 234 cal

Dinner chicken breast, sour cream with fajita spices, rocket, cucumber, avocado, celery. 337 cal

Drinking loads of water, a bit hungry.

I'm a week in and still can't manage two flights of stairs without a breather!
The Legs of Lead, I remember from low carbing previously but after a week or two everything suddenly becomes a lot easier...My husband ran a marathon whilst properly low carbing so it can be done.

(I mean him, and other people. Not me hoh no Blush)

I had stuffed pepper tonight as well Grace but mine was stuffed with chilli

Kanyes that's amazing! I think this diet would be too low cal for you - what about the 5:2 where you eat less some days?
Lolbeans I am doing my food plan for next week and planning chilli and the curry you made last night.
PurpleMo welcome to you, come and join us, tell us what you've been eating.

That fish looks great, you're obviously putting lots of thought into your meals! Keep up with the descriptions, they help.

Not sure if it's been mentioned already but I LOVE your plates! Grin

Hi! Weighed in today, I'm down to 11.7 which is a loss of 1 stone 9lb on this plan (2 stone 6 altogether) and 1 stone left to go! Hoping to do it in the remaining 7.5 weeks left of my 8 weeks! Today I had nothing til 4pm (I always fast on a Wednesday as I weigh in at a slimming group at 3.00) and then when I came home I had a piece of this weird cauliflower 'bread' and a piece of crustless quiche. Dinner was smoked salmon and salad. The cauliflower bread is made of a head of cauli, blitzed to 'rice', steam for 5 mins, mix in a ball of mozzarella and 3 beaten eggs, then spread in a thin layer on a tray an bake until solid. It works out at about 70 cals per piece if you cut into 10, each piece is the size of a normal slice of bread. It was a bit weird on its own, but tomorrow I'm making pate so will try it with that and salad and report back!

oldlaundbooth thank you! I am a bit obsessed by 1930s (flowery) and 1970s (brown and orange) china. I think food tastes better on a nice plate, I get them all from charity shops.

I feel oddly full tonight, I hope I haven't miscalculated my calories somehow and gone overboard.

Gracegildee, thank you. I'm following the diet from the book at the moment as I'm not confident enough to try my own thing yet. So it's pretty straightforward. Smile

Today's meals - bowl of berries for breakfast; two chicken drumsticks and fruit salad for lunch (in a rush) and pesto salmon with veg tonight. Caved in this afternoon and had a mini doughnut - feel v bloated now and wondering if it's the sudden carb / sugar hit?

grace you might find that your appetite naturally curbs once you've been on plan for a few weeks! I think once your detox off the sugar your natural satiety regulation kicks in and you don't 'override' it with sweet food.

I've made my complex menu plan for next week and done the online shop. I have one vegetarian, two with ASD who only like a few things, himself and then me on my diet. Although one day just says "prawns" with no idea what to do with them yet.

Lunches are easy if I have salad, cheese, meat, mushrooms etc 😀 I'm not organised with most things but i have a small freezer and need to keep on top of things.

Sprog do you maybe need a bit more fat to fill you up? Cheese with lunch or full fat yoghurt on your berries? And yes, thenew I think so. I licked a bit of diet yoghurt of a spoon earlier and it was like eating sugar.

Yes you may be right Grace. Not that keen on yoghurt unfortunately but love cheese! Having a sardine/soft cheese dip for lunch tomorrow - yum!

Another 1lb off this morning - that makes 5lb so far this week 😮. However, this is weight I put on quickly over half term so think it will be harder from now on. Great diet though - my sugar cravings have definitely lessened!

Planning is definitely the key on this diet. In the early days I'd get the recipe books out, plan the meals, do my online shop and work out all the calories - all in one mammoth sitting! It took me hours, but then once you're done its done for the week. Plus, sometimes things are unexpectedly high in calories, so if you work it out beforehand at least you know what you have to work with. I would also freeze a few meals each week which meant I had a supply of calorie counted meals in the freezer which was a godsend. What recipes are everyone using? I've done loads from Jamie oliver, the 30 and 15 minutes meals books, and also the superfoods books. There's a chicken Satay which is divine! Be warned though, the superfoods book is calorie counted but I have found them to really inaccurate, sometimes hundreds of calories out.

Sprog that's brilliant, 5lb off is such a boost mentally too! Well done. thenew yes I totally agree, I'm hoping I continue to feel this motivated -posting here helps so much. If I have the right food in the cupboard and fridge I'm not going to eat crappy snacks.

Breakfast pizza again today, very nice and around 170cal. Half a lavash bread, squirt of tomato purée, loads of mushrooms, a bit of ham and grated cheese. Baked for ten minutes while I fed cats and 10yo. Cats very interested in breakfast ham.

bear I use quite a few Jamie Oliver recipes from his website too eg for traybakes. I also use the BBC Good Food website for chilli, etc. As I said on the other thread, last night I used the chicken and red pepper curry recipe from the BSD website. It was great!

I must admit I always recalculate the calories and nutrition because I've found website calorie counts can be inaccurate.

Morning. Do you mind if I join you? I started on Monday and although I didn't want to weigh myself til Next Monday I have sneakily done it this morning and have lost about 4lbs! Smile. I had a chicken curry last night with cauliflower rice and it's the most filling thing I've had all week. I slavishly worked the calories out as I went but I still felt I must have miscalculated because I didn't go to bed hungry. I'm curious about the noodles.... How do you make something with zero calories ? What's in it? Does it have carbs ( can something that's zero calories actually have any carbs? 🤔). I'm curious but keen to try them. ( I'm pretty sure Amazon do them ). Has anyone found the Pho soup base? I tried a general supermarket but they didn't have it? Sorry to post here....

Spirited welcome, well done on losing 4lbs! I haven't tried the zero noodles, mainly because I'm not that bothered about noodles anyway and they seem expensive. Although if someone invents a low calorie low carb jacket potato i'd give it a go :)

Have you tried Holland and Barrett for them and the soup base? or even eBay? Hope your energy arrives soon x

This is off someone's blog, its the same recipe though. I did it with courgette noodles and omitted the honey.
Also this, probably the nicest curry I've made, but tread carefully because the squash is carby, and only half the paste is used. I found the calories way off in his book, so recalculated, and worked out that a chicken thigh, sauce and slice of butternut 2cm thick approx was about 500cals. Ideal for a day when you plan to eat most cals at one meal!

Obviously on both these recipes, omit the rice and noodles!

Re the noodles mentioned by previous poster. I think they are indigestible fibre, so they do have carbs but as they are not digested by the body, they don't 'count'. True low carbers deduct the fibre grams from the total carbs grams when calculating (I don't!) -I think, although someone please correct me, that the zero noodles are made from some form of roughage. Personally I think they sound rank, and the beauty of this plan is that after the detox you don't need 'bulk' to fill you up, you are more satisfied by nutritious food. If you're hungry in the early days I'd be more inclined to increase your calorie intake but use the extra calories on high fat or protein such as full fat Greek yog or cheese, and drink more water.

thenew I shall try the chicken later I think. Looks amazing.
Quick lunch today as I am painting and don't want to slow down too long. Big dollop full fat Greek yogurt, a few blueberries, chopped apple, sprinkle of mixed nuts and flaxseed. I have IBS so I have flaxseed everyday to help things along. Drinking lots of water.

I've never tried zero noodles but I like the barenaked noodles which are made from the same base ie konjac flour.

Konjac is an Asian plant. The Barenaked ones are fab but I bought them prior to BSD anyway because we have lots of allergies in our house.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2016 13:11

Looks like the zero noodles are the same a place
www.zeronoodles.com/About.asp
They made of water and soluble fibre from the konjac plant, so are technically a vegetable. When it talks about 'net carbs' this is total carbs grams minus indigestible/insoluble fibre grams, making its total overall carb load very very low.

3lb down since Tuesday :) hope I can keep it up. Got to nearer 1000 than 800 yesterday due to a slight misunderstanding with my Dad, my bit of cheese & an apple for lunch request turned into a cheese sandwich. Never mind it's still a lot less than I normally eat.
I am always surprised that you don't feel that hungry on this plan, perhaps because it's all good food?
I have a long trip to London & back tomorrow, maybe pack some vegetable sticks rather than risk another cheese sandwich.
