My big fat 800 calorie blood sugar diet diary, all welcome

I've started the 800 calorie Michael Mosley blood sugar diet today. I'm T2 diabetic, menopausal and need a sharp shock to do something about the way I eat.

Weight has crept up post surgeries over the past few years, I have low carbed before then caved in. I'm going to post what I eat and my progress on here as an incentive to stick to this for 8 weeks. Anyone else welcome to do the same.

Breakfast half a lavash bread, smear of tomato purée, lots of mushrooms and sprinkle of grated cheese. Very filling. 189 cal

Lunch. Little gem lettuce leaves with bacon, avocado, cucumber. 234 cal

Dinner chicken breast, sour cream with fajita spices, rocket, cucumber, avocado, celery. 337 cal

Drinking loads of water, a bit hungry.

Day 4 and it's the first time I've been really hungry - not sure why? Had fruit, soup and a small whole meal roll so far and still feel a bit empty - will have some fat when I get home from work!

Sprog are you logging your food? Depending on the type of fruit and soup it could be that you're having too many carbs with the whole meal roll too? I definitely get hungrier if I go too high with the carbs.

Dinner! Chicken marinaded in peanut butter, soy sauce, chilli and garlic. Really nice, thanks for the link thenew. Had this with sautéed spinach, mushrooms and roasted broccoli and cherry tomatoes and a few radishes. I roast the broccoli in the oven as I hate boiled veg. Around 400cals.

I finally bought the book & I have bought Greek yoghurt & blueberries for breakfast tomorrow Smile
I need to get on with it & just do it, I've always failed on calorie counting diets before! but this thread, the photos & the food sounds like food I'd actually like. worried I might actually be diabetic, I keep falling asleep after meals

Love the meals being posted. I still think I will struggle for breakfast but want to fully establish breast feeding before I drop calories too much. I think 1600 is the minimum you should have while breastfeeding I read somewhere.

Yes as people have said further up, check with your doctor re breastfeeding, the calories are too low. I wanted sponge puddings every day when I was bf.

RainbowsAndUnicornss have you any other symptoms? Weeing a lot, tingly toes, sore eyes?

RainbowsAndUnicornss · 09/06/2016 19:15

Not weeing more than normal
Not tingly toes but get v hot stabby feeling in feet at night, I have to run them under cold water before bed!
Also get blurry eyed at night but think that's looking at a screen too long at the end of the day
I am a sugar carb addict so I feel slightly resigned to it Sad I don't think I can handle what the GP will say, I'll do this diet & hopefully that will improve things ??!

You might be impaired glucose tolerance which is pre-diabetic?

The main 5:2 thread gives some guidelines for breastfeeding, why not follow those and just go low cal 2 days per week, (I think it suggests 1000 to start with and then you could reduce to 800 on fasting days as you adapt) but eat bSD maintenance food on the 5 days, caloriewise for those days you would work out your total daily calories expended (there are links to a calculator on the 5:2 thread original post) and aim to be around there or slightly under with calories . Once you have had a few weeks of logging on my fitness pal you could prob switch to just counting cals on the 2 1000 cal days.

PS love the food suggestions on this thread!!

sprog personally, I wouldn't calorie count while breastfeeding. I know the temptation is there, but your hormones and your body will overrule your intentions every time. I haven't reread so not sure how old your baby is? You will before hungry while bf and also, I found, the sheer number of hours you're awake just increases the length of your day, thus you need more food just to get through it! I would suggest that you stock up on foods that you can eat, avoid large quantities of really calorie dense food like nuts, and cut out sugars, but not calorie count the rest. I would imagine that if you aren't overriding your appetite with sweet foods (aaarrrgggh the breastfeeding hobnobs!) then you will begin to lose. I'm really not lecturing you, but I remember when I was bf my two boys I was so ravenous, its an emotional time and its horrible to feel that pressure to diet as well. (I gained almost a stone breastfeeding because I was dieting, and failing, every day!)

Morning! Friday, nearly finished my first week on this. Feeling good, blood sugar coming down a bit. Trying to stay motivated. Breakfast today was two portobello mushrooms baked then a spoonful of low sugar beans and a sprinkle of cheese. Around 200cal. I find breakfast the hardest as I always had toast everyday. I don't like eggs in any shape or form. I try to have cheese or full fat yoghurt for breakfast as that fills me up.

Bit of a rushed day today. Lunch was roast chicken with salad and mayonnaise (200cals) and for dinner home made chilli. I made a massive pot with minced beef, Tina of tomatoes, kidney beans, onions, garlic, red pepper and chilli powder. Blob of sour cream and some lettuce with it. Very nice.

I've had a failed day today - lunch was Ok ( tuna pate with veg crudités) but then I had a burger at the school fete because there was nothing else to eat and quite frankly I was dropping! Tomorrow is another day...

Strangely, after yesterday, lost the 1lb I'd put on - so that's a 5lb loss since Monday. V happy with that!
I guess I did a huge amount of rushing about before the fete so worked off the burger maybe?!!

I've pretty much lost the plot the last few days after having bread on Thursday, I've not been able to rein myself back in. I've remained sugar free but yesterday was definitely over on carbs and calories, in fact was pretty much TDEE. Woke with a thumping headache and feeling very dehydrated, so I'm starting today with a pint of water and will see where the day takes me....I usually relax a little on calories at weekends, but as I've already had 2 days off I'll need to be strict now. Dh is out tonight for the football so that gives me chance to plan some meals and plan the week ahead.
Have a great Saturday everyone!

Morning everyone! That's my first week done, I just weighed myself and I'm 7.5lbs down. Very pleased with that, not expecting to sustain that level of loss but it's good for the first week. It's gone off my face, stomach and thighs mainly, I can see the difference and my jeans are much looser.

Finding it a lot easier now the first few days of hunger pangs are over, I'm drinking a lot of water which helps.

Thank you Sprog! Have you found drinking water helps?
Breakfast today was grilled bacon and halloumi on lettuce. 200cals. Probably less as the cat stole some bacon.

Can I please join?

I'm on day 4 and have NO energy! I had quite a bad time on day two with headaches and even slight dizziness and the shakes but then I have gone from having 3 tsp of sugar in my black coffee to none. I must have been so addicted to sugar, it's embarrassing. I think I need to up my water intake to help with the brain fog too.

I haven't weighed myself yet but I put on a dress that had been getting a bit tight and it was a lot looser yesterday so I'm counting that as progress Grin

I'm a veggie, don't drink alcohol, and can't have most forms of dairy (hard cheese is okay though, and halloumi thank god). I've been having a lot of eggs and making my own hummus again (great with minted broccoli to dip in it!), I like the challenge of thinking what to cook. I'm using MFP to track carb, cals, and sugar and have been averaging at around 700 cals, I'm sure it'll get easier to know what the right amount to eat is.

This is last night's feast! grilled halloumi, puy lentils with roasted pepper, mushrooms and basil, green salad with apple cyder dressing (apparently apple cyder vinegar is good for this diet too), homemade hummus, tomato and olive salad with basil. All for 399 cals!

Welcome Philomena what a great dinner that is! How do you do your minted broccoli? The shakes will pass soon, keep drinking the water and it will be ok. When it lifts it's amazing.
