I've started the 800 calorie Michael Mosley blood sugar diet today. I'm T2 diabetic, menopausal and need a sharp shock to do something about the way I eat.

Weight has crept up post surgeries over the past few years, I have low carbed before then caved in. I'm going to post what I eat and my progress on here as an incentive to stick to this for 8 weeks. Anyone else welcome to do the same.

Breakfast half a lavash bread, smear of tomato purée, lots of mushrooms and sprinkle of grated cheese. Very filling. 189 cal

Lunch. Little gem lettuce leaves with bacon, avocado, cucumber. 234 cal

Dinner chicken breast, sour cream with fajita spices, rocket, cucumber, avocado, celery. 337 cal

Drinking loads of water, a bit hungry.

lolbeans that looks lush, how did you make the sauce?
bigkids I think that's really good, it's so hard to stop over eating once you've started. I could eat 1200 in scampi fries easily when I'm not doing this.

ICJump

So starting today. I'm breastfeeding so I'm allowing myself up to 1200 calories a day but aiming for under 1000.

Is that safe when you are breast feeding?

LolBeansandSalad · 07/06/2016 21:38

Grace it's onions and garlic fried off with spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilli) then half a tin of chopped tomatoes, some water and a tin of chickpeas all simmered together. I tend to make it the night before then reheat the next day with a splash of water and a couple of handfuls of spinach stirred through

Good restraint bigkids that's the spirit!

In other news, I bought new bathroom scales today as my old ones are definitely on the way out. I live in hope that they will miraculously show me half a stone lighter when I try them out (which won't be until at least first thing in the morning, post wee and shower and pre drop of food or liquid, obvs)

Sprog19 · 08/06/2016 00:52

Forgot to put yesterday's meals on but can't sleep so will do it now!
No breakfast, chicken noodle salad (250 cals) and fruit salad (57 cals) for lunch ( both from Greggs! Who knew?) dinner chicken with ginger and lime, asparagus and cauliflower rice (400 cals). Snacks - pack popcorn (88 cals) nuts/fruit (236 cals aargh - a mistake) and 2 Carrs cheese melts. So way over the 800 cal mark but still less than I've been eating recently. Will see what the morning brings...

LolBeansandSalad · 08/06/2016 06:42

Morning

Well the new scales were a bit kinder this morning and showed a further lb off- so first week total is 4lb off woohoo!

Sprog19 · 08/06/2016 07:27

That's brilliant lolbeans! Down to 13.11 this morning so that's a 5lb loss for me but am counting as 4 as one pound was probably my pyjamas on the first day!

LolBeansandSalad · 08/06/2016 07:36

Well done! Can't believe you weighed in your pyjamas Grin I have to be naked, bone dry, toileted, make up-less and teeth brushed and I don't even breathe whilst I'm standing there!

GraceGildee · 08/06/2016 08:35

Well done Sprog and Lolbeans! That's brilliant 😀😀
The flaxseeds erm, did what they do best last night after a few days of constipation. So much so that the scales say I am 4lb lighter today then I was yesterday Confused I wasn't expecting that.

bigkidsdidit · 08/06/2016 08:37

Well done!!

I got my period this morning - I always forget! And I always mainline carbs the day before so I'm even more pleased I limited myself to 1200 yesterday.

2lb in two days off Smile

Aiming for 800 today.

GraceGildee · 08/06/2016 09:19

Kicking off today's food with 192cals, this was just what I fancied and is filling. Blueberries, walnut pieces and a cheese strip. And a cup of earl great. Black as I don't like milk.
I'm finding that now I'm losing a few pounds my head is coping with the diet better. I don't feel (as) resentful that I'm not having toast. I'm eating some really nice food.

Hello everyone, this is very interesting reading Smile. Just wondering, do any of you do a lot of exercise? If you do, do you "eat back" the calories burned? I exercise a good bit, but need to lose 1.5 stone, and would love to kick start myself as well as doing something to reduce my sugar intake.

GraceGildee · 08/06/2016 10:06

KanyesVest I usually run but am currently injured and having physio, I'm also hoping running will be a bit easier if I can be lighter. This is a great way to kick start losing weight.

For me, I am several stones overweight and had cancer a few years ago (all better) and a lot of surgery and now I carry all my weight around my middle. After reading up about lots of diets I decided the best way to do something about it was a very low calorie diet. I want to get rid of my spare tyre and also blast away the fat around my organs. And get back to running! Sometimes when low carving and running I would eat my calories but progress was slower if I did.

OP posts:
GraceGildee · 08/06/2016 10:07

Low carbing not carving!

kanye, I think as a rule you you aren't supposed to eat back any calories burned from exercise. I think the reasoning is that its impossible to gauge it correctly. Most of the long term bsders treat it as 'money in the bank' so to speak. I personally don't, but I also don't do tremendous amounts of exercise just lead a generally active life; I also rarely stick to 800 cals (more like 900-1000) most days. The low carbs is the key, and I've found that if my carbs are low I can afford a few extra calories. I suppose if you are an endurance runner for example, you might need to eat before training or it might impede your running?

GraceGildee · 08/06/2016 12:33

Welcome WavingNotDrowning! I am also a carb addict and I'm finding it easier to have cut right down rather than still eating smaller quantities of bread, potatoes etc. It's not easy but the huge high you feel when the weight loss kicks in makes it worth while. The results are fast if you can stick to it.

Good luck everyone and don't beat yourself up if you go over 800, it's easily done. I find logging every meal on myfitnesspal before I prepare it helps as I can see where I'm going to go over.

I haven't read the book but does Michael Moseley really say restrict to 800 calories per day for 8 weeks? If so I'm utterly shocked Shock.

GraceGildee · 08/06/2016 13:47

Can you try a spirit and slimline tonic? I'm trying to (mostly) not drink, it's bad for my blood sugar and it also makes me want to eat everything :) Have a look at a list of calories in different alcoholic drinks and see what looks the lowest.

Lunch chez GIldee is a quick salad. Iceberg lettuce (29p in tesco), few spinach leaves, half a beetroot, small piece of nice cheddar, cherry toms, slice of ham and a small blob of houmous as I have no pickle. 211cals.

Hello ICJump, I was wondering if you had seen these precautions for MM 8 week Blood Sugar Diet where it says not to do this if you are breastfeeding?

â–  you are on insulin or any diabetic medication other than metformin. You may need a suitable reduction in dosage to avoid too fast a drop in blood sugar.
■ you are on blood pressure tablets — you may have to reduce the dosage or come off them. The same applies to glucose-lowering drugs, ones that begin with the letter G, like glibenclamide and gliclazide, which may have to be stopped because they can push your blood glucose abnormally low.
â–  you have moderate or severe retinopathy. You should have extra screenings within six months of reducing diabetes.
â–  You are pregnant or breastfeeding
â–  You have a psychiatric or eating disorder.
â–  You are taking warfarin.
â–  You have epilepsy.
â–  You have a significant medical condition.
â–  You are unwell or have a fever.
Don’t follow the diet if you are under 18, your BMI is below 21, or you are recovering from surgery or are generally frail.

RainbowsAndUnicornss · 08/06/2016 14:37

Oo all your food sounds so nice!!

GraceGildee · 08/06/2016 17:12

I seem to have a lot of food here for not a lot of calories. A piece of value white fish sautéed with mushrooms, red onion, a little bit of chorizo and half a tin of tomatoes. Some grated apple and carrot. Rocket salad on the plate and some stuffed inside half a roasted red pepper with a small amount of cheese. About 390cals.

I'm being descriptive about my meals in case anyone wants to make them. This is really tasty and filling.

Thanks for the info re exercise, Grace and average bear. I'm definitely not an edurance athlete, but I do some circuits, weight lifting, hiit stuff which would absolutely wipe me out on 800 cals. I might have to do a bit more reading. Waving, I did c25k a couple of years ago, its great. I was running 10k regularly this time last year, but due to a dodgy pelvis and a loss of motivation, I'm trying to build back up from 5k to 10k again. It's an eternal struggle for me!
