Thanks H3, can I do flat breads with the gram, like chippatis?

The aubergine sounds good Ooola, might have a go of that.

H3l3naGraham · 01/05/2016 11:45

PS it's the wheat spaghetti which raises the carb & calorie count, with courgette instead it's absolutely reasonable

Elvish · 01/05/2016 11:46

Ohh I love meatballs H3, I made some a few weeks ago with extra lean turkey mince which were good - even the kids ate them!

H3l3naGraham · 01/05/2016 11:47

Yes elvish you can make flatbreads with gram flour, I posted the recipe on the 2nd BSD stream, but it is on the MM BSD site as well, in the recipe section. I make them as a treat once a week, can be used as a sort of pizza-base too Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/05/2016 12:50

Hi everyone, feeling a bit better today (possibly due to arrival of AF which had escaped me due to my cycle normally being haywire but suddenly being regular, and also having little in the way of pmt this last week, both I'd imagine are positive side effects of being sugar free so another nsv (mm, all is forgiven) and I'm feeling a lot more positive again!
Its interesting to see everyone's menus and shopping lists, I'm really enjoying trying new foods on this plan. This week I've ordered some gram flour to try some flat breads, plus Jamie oliver has a recipe in his superfoods book for 'popovers' which are like little pancakes using flour and cottage cheese so I thought I might experiment with gram in those as well. There are some nice recipes in that book, they come in a little high calorie wise but if you take out the pasta or rice in many of the dishes they would be under. I'm doing the roast butternut squash laska (?) tomorrow.
Did anyone see on Sunday brunch this morning where they wrapped beef tomatoes in parma ham and baked them? Have pencilled that in as a breakfast idea too!
Have a great bank holiday everyone. We're off to the dark side of hell a soft play this afternoon.

H3l3naGraham · 01/05/2016 13:42

Hi NewBear just logging in before we go to our lovely neighbour's for too much food & wine...

I think I saw Jamie make those popovers on the TV prog of the book, if they work with gram flour do let us know & I'll have a go too!

Good news that you are feeling better, sun is shining here & springtime really is in the air, easier to eat better if we're not freezing cold & wintery isn't it?

Happy B Hol weekend everyone Smile

oolaroola · 01/05/2016 15:12

It's amazing how the clouds lift isn't it when it starts bear? Glad you're feeling better.

I'm having a day mostly lying about watching films and internetting today - am knackered and listening to my body.
DC's seem tired too and very content watching film after film in their jammies - bliss actually.

Happy bank holiday to everybody too! Have a good time with your neighbours H313

Peasandsweetcorn · 01/05/2016 20:33

Some brilliant losses here. Well done to you! For those on a plateau, when I did 4:3 18 months ago, I stuck at 10st 4 for 7 weeks during which time I pretty much stuck to the diet every day, started C25k and shredded on the days I didn't run. Whilst the scales infuriated me, my body shape transformed & I was the thinnest I'd been for years although not the lightest. I never did have a "whoosh" and suddenly lose a few pound quickly but I did in ally go back to losing one lb a week.
Terrible day here. Drinking last night &, despite best intentions, just needed carbs & sugar today. I think I may need to cut out alcohol for a few weeks!

Itscurtainsforyou · 02/05/2016 07:10

Hello all - I wasn't sure whether I should start a new thread or not. I've just bought the book and planning on giving it a go.

I already low carb generally but without the 800 cal restriction - do you think it will still work for me (without the sudden carb loss)?

What's the best app to use to track calories etc or exercise?

I've had type 2 for 14 years now so am dreading falling into the category of people that this doesn't help much that I read about in the book! Is anyone else similar?

Thanks

Elvish · 02/05/2016 07:54

Morning Curtains, no idea about your questions sorry - someone else probably will. Restricting calories must help though surely? How many do you think you're eating normally? Have you worked out your tdee?

I use my fitness pal to track exercise and food, I'm happy with it but I'm sure there are other options. It connects to my Fitbit and adds in my steps automatically which is nice, but it gives me the calories to eat which I can't switch off on the free version. So some good stuff some that's a pain!

I'm going to spend the morning polishing my halo Halo

At the party last night I had 2 G&Ts a mojito and a JD and diet coke. I had a couple of tonics without gin and some coke without the JD so no one picked me up on not drinking. This was from 5-12 so a fair few hours.

The food was quite healthy and I ate on plan, except for the wedge of raspberry and pistachio pavlova which I was powerless to resist. I had some peanuts which added a fair few cals but no crisps, chocolates or other goodies.

Think I probably came in at 1500 for the day, so not a total disaster and I'm going to go for a long walk today and drink loads of water to try and move on whatever I've consumed quickly.

Hope everyone has a lovely day.

Not2bObvious · 02/05/2016 08:46

Welcome curtains, when you say low carving have you been removing bread/pasta/rice/potatoes/most fruits completely from your diet? Again I can't really speak with knowledge on T2 but my understanding was that taking those foods out completely & sticking to 800 produces great results on studies and now in real life, good number of people on the blood sugar diet site who are T2 and it's changed their lives. Maybe you should go there for diabetes advice, and here for moral support & hand holding😁

Excellent behaviour Elvish, your halo is well deserved. I'm a good child too, only 250ml of wine & 3 vodka & cranberry juice drinks (only 7 cals per 200ml, I know it's bad but it's better than bottle of wine & migraine)
I did do a bit too much nibbling but not that bad for a bh Sunday when I had guest over for dinner. Suns shining here but weather says rain, hmm to walk or not to walk?

OP posts:
H3l3naGraham · 02/05/2016 09:10

Welcome curtains no need to start a new thread, you'll find plenty of support here! As not2b says, when you say low carb are you talking under 50g per day? Is it the correct type of carb? Are you doing steps etc - all this will have an impact & there is no reason why you wouldn't lose weight, there's a world of difference between say 1,500 calories a day on low carb & 800 ! I am not T2, bout know from the MM BSD site that not all medics are supportive of this wonderful diet & the way it is helping so many, many people, why not stick with us for a bit & see how it goes!?

not2b & Elvish you were better than I was but I wasn't too awful, small amount of fish mousse on 1/2 piece of brown toast to start with followed by roast beef & good veg, plus 2 small spuds. The bad bits were a Yorkie pudding (was yum) and a small amount of fruit crumble with a dribble of custard. Drank red wine. That was all that I ate yesterday & as the flea market we are visiting today is pretty large, that will mean plenty of steps, will just have yoghurt & berries for brekkie, no idea about lunch yet but suspect we will just have 1 further meal today.

Who stole the weather?!?!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2016 09:26

Well, yesterday didn't exactly go to plan, had my first moment of weakness and had some chocolate. To be honest, it was very sweet and tasted like cooking chocolate, I wasn't really tempted to have more, but I'm a bit miffed with myself for breaking the detox! I was sensible though, I even weighed out my 40g and worked out the calories first, which I think shows great restraint and made it less of a frantic binge and more of a scheduled event. Had absolutely thumping headache all night and this morning, do you reckon this is related or just coincidence?
Today I've had an omlette with spinach and parmesan, and we're having homemade curry tonight, I have got cauli rice to go with mine.
curtains I use a different app, I paid for it on android rather than use the free one, and couldn't get mfp on my kindle. Its pretty good, tracks exercise and food etc, although the preloaded calorie counts are a bit hit and miss, most are American brands. I have been entering all my own values each time which is quite labour intensive but most of my regular foods are on there now. I would love to find an app that I can create a recipe and then store it as a list of ingredients and total calorie counts, rather than just entering the individual items in my day's tracker, but in reality is is a minor inconvenience.

Itscurtainsforyou · 02/05/2016 09:28

Thanks!
Yeah I generally cut out bread/pasta/rice/potatoes, plus sugary stuff (including most fruits) - just because they send my blood sugar through the roof. I'm probably on 50g or less most days, unless some carbs sneak their way in without me realising!

I think the main difference between what I'm currently doing and the blood sugar diet is that I'm eating more fat and not counting the calories...

How do you find out the calorie content of food? Is there a database in an app or is it just a case of look it up on the web?

H3l3naGraham · 02/05/2016 10:02

Hi Curtains - there's sugar in so much food, even M&S plain prawns & cooked chicken slices Shock I use pre-calorie-counted recipes in the main, eg the ones in the book, from Olive Mag, Hairy Dieters etc or use the web, although there are Apps out there. When I substitute foods, they are usually similar in their make-up or calorie count & I don't sweat it if they are 50 calories over under or whatever, I look more closely at the carbs & sugars.

foolsgold · 02/05/2016 10:05

Can I join in please? I am starting this tomorrow. I'm quite nervous about it but I'm going to try to motivate myself by reading these threads from the start. First I need to clean my kitchen (in a state of wreckage from the weekend) and tackle the cupboards. I don't want to be rummaging through delicious treats to find the healthy options gathering dust at the back...

foolsgold · 02/05/2016 10:06

Also - I don't live in the UK so can't rely on M&S while I get into the swing of things. Otherwise I'd love to hear your tips on how best to get started. Thanks!

Elvish · 02/05/2016 11:16

Hi Fools, welcome.

I would sit down and menu plan your first week up front then shop for the relevant things. Pre-make anything you can like salads for the next day. Then you will be less tempted to go off plan when hungry or short of time.

You might get terrible headaches when you start, salt apparently helps so a cup of miso or similar is worth having to hand.

Good luck!

Elvish · 02/05/2016 11:19

Curtains, The MFP app has a database in it with a lot of calories, or you can scan in the barcodes and most things come up from that.

You can build recipes in it and set the number of portions, so if you make a batch of soup you don't have to re-enter or remember what was in it from last time. You can also enter anything you use regularly, so my salads are generally the same ingredients so I have it saved, any minor variations I ignore as it's just veg.

Not2bObvious · 02/05/2016 13:56

Hope we're all enjoying the BH? I did my walk & then a KB workout with my new 8kg kb- it was tough! Shoulders are aching but I'm glad I did it, 1 down 2 to go to continue my weekly goal. Still haven't weighed in from Friday, let's see can I last til this Friday. Green curry planned for dinner, but I'm starting to get a bit peckish now - wonder if I can last the afternoon on tea & water. Ate better this weekend then previous but still over did it a bit, it's hard to change the bad habits I've become accustomed to over many years of weekend binges. Anyone doing anything interesting?

Hello all! I am back on track now - 3 weeks and 5 days to go until my holiday! I have been pretty bad food-wise with much cake, but never mind all that now. If I can lose half a stone between now and the holiday it would be incredibly brilliant. Too scared to weigh this morning, though! Will woman up and weigh in tomorrow. I have now roped DH in, too, which should help as he won't be buying crap.

In a bid to increase my steps I went out for a walk at lunchtime and fell down some stairs. Blush I limped back to the office with a hole in the knee of my tights and a bleeding foot. Add that to the stiff neck after doing Level 3 of the Shred last night and the giant foot blisters from walking in high-heeled boots on Thursday and I'm a wreck!

H3l3naGraham · 02/05/2016 19:36

Hello not2b managed to survive the flea mkt without buying stuff we didn't need.... But ended up at the only warm place that had a table... The pub....you know what we were saying about fish & chips the other day.....oops........ But did leave more than half the chips... Nearly ....had wine too, but we're on feet for 3hrs so reckon have used a calorie. Or 2. DH has been put to bed as he had more fun in the drizzle pub than I did...

2extra hmmmm..... Hope you aren't too bruised. Having DH along with me helps. Sometimes, not today... Pissartist......----

Your fall sounds like me out on a night with mates, hosiery gone to hell & back along with my dignity, have invested in some horribly comfy (eek) Sketcher trainers along with some functional sandals.....I can but dream of high heels these days, at least the sandals are in hot gold, and I can still paint my toenails red!!

Itscurtainsforyou · 02/05/2016 20:34

Thanks for the advice so far Smile

I've just been out for my last meal before I start. I'm feeling enormous!

Good advice about the hairy bikers - I have one of their books so will be using that.

I'm guessing there are no "allowed" snacks are there (well not if you want to stick to the 800 calories)?
