Congratulations H3l, that's super. Enjoy your walk, I'm just back from mine and having Saturday toast, not very bsd I know - it's necessary though😁 Feeling a little bit seedy but only a little bit. Hoping to get a nap in later as didn't sleep great, never do after drink. M&S Indian planned for the evening meal, no rice or naan for me, not sure what lunch will be yet? Hmm decisions

APlaceOnTheCouch · 30/04/2016 08:55

Congratulations H3l3na ! And your meal plan for the day sounds lovely.

1lbs down this morning. This is my 30th day and in total I have lost 10lbs.

oolaroola · 30/04/2016 09:01

That's brilliant H313 - glad you're feeling so positive and seeing results.

Well I survived last night - had a bowl of soup - but it was incredibly difficult. Am still drinking like a fish - who knew that an overdose of salt could produce such an unbalancing effect? Just shows you that when you're not eating processed crap you don't stand a chance really.

Am still in bed but gonna scrape myself out and take the dog for an extra long walk. Roll on bank holiday weekend I love em.

Not2bObvious · 30/04/2016 09:25

Congrats on 10lb off aplace, that's class!

I meant when you ARE eating processed crap - sorry.

Really good news aplace well done.

Approaching 6 weeks now. I generally stick to 800 calories but there have been two Saturdays when I have gone a bit wild and a meal out. The pattern of weight loss is mentally difficult because I tend to stay the same for a few days, get quite frustrated, have a loss of about 2lb then maybe put a pound back on, then stay the same, then go down a bit. Very unpredictable. none of this is helped by the fact that the food takes a long time to go through the system, to be indelicate.
However, I have lost 17lb now, which is very encouraging.

I've noticed a couple of unexpected benefits, the first being that I don't fall asleep on the sofa anymore half way through films and long television programmes. Although I'm drinking lots I don't have to get up in the night to go to the loo as I used to.

I really think that it is worth struggling on if it seems difficult as the "whoosh" of a couple of pounds off after staying the same for a while is just typical of this diet from what I've read here and on the BSD forum on the web site.

Not2bObvious · 30/04/2016 11:51

That is really good Ex, nearly averaging out at 3lb a week which is excellent. As a fellow slave to the scales, it's hard to get your head around flux, but if you're more good than bad I think the results will show over time. Stomach rumbling like crazy but sticking to tea & water for another 40 mins, then something eggy for lunch for a change

OP posts:
clare8allthepies · 30/04/2016 11:52

Wow some great losses, well done everybody! Star

Plenty of wine consumed last night and got the munchies severely, stuck to nuts to keep the carbs down but dread to think of the calories consumed, not dreadfully hungover like I was last Saturday though thank goodness!

H3l3naGraham · 30/04/2016 13:37

Well done Exconstance & Couch - really great to hear how well you are both doing! I've been for a walk but it's so nice today that I have asked DH to dig out our bikes, think we will cycle along the coast for a bit, as his cold hangover is so bad, it won't be a long one, but it's too nice a day not to!

not2b did you end up with eggs again?! I have been looking at the Sirt recipes in the Times & there's a couple which are on tgt for BSD eg Shakshuka, which seems to be around on a lot of diets, so must try it, but NOTHING will ever persuade me to drink that compost smelling Sirt juice ever again.....Envy

Reading a Waitrose mag over brunch, article by Diana Henry the Telegraph's food writer, apparently gram flour 'batter' which is what I make my flatbreads from, is perfect for dipping bits of fish or chicken into, to make healthy 'nuggets' - who'd have thought! So next Friday we will be having 'battered' fish with our oven-baked sweet potato 'chips' - really pushing food boat out there!

Apparently it can even be used to make shortbread, but let's not go there, can't imagine a mixture of gram flour & stevia is going to produce anything edible...... Unless someone else would like to be test-chef...?

Also has anyone heard of Edamame Fettuccine - a kind of gluten-free pasta made from soya beans? Am going to try to persuade my local (ditsy) health food shop to stock it, or might even try online, I think Ocado stocks it (am new to Ocado, as my local Sainsbury's is not too much to shout about.....)

My dry start to the next 7 days has been scuppered by a lunch invite tomorrow (excellent cooks, so will have a piggie-fest methinks) and a whole gang of mates hooking up to go to a local flea-market on Monday, this will no doubt involve alcohol as well as bargains, but there I can watch the food intake...... So Tuesday to Saturday is now my 800 cals & dry window.......

Not2bObvious · 30/04/2016 15:17

Egg mayo with bacon and a sausage was lunch - v nice. So so tired and vile headache, so much for no hangover, thought I'd avoided major damage but my safe limit must be lower than I'd hoped. Damn it anyway

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/04/2016 15:38

Hi everyone, still no budge on the scales for me today, its over a week now since I lost any weight, (I think) - is this normal for this plan?? I have joined the mm forum on his site and had a brief read through some threads on there, but I'm a bit Hmm as to whether I'm doing something wrong without realising. I'm not making 800 cals most days, more like 900-1000 but this is still half my tdee so I would have thought that would be OK, plus I drink gallons of water, Carbs mostly under 50 a day too, even on days when I'm over on cals, and I've been 100% sugar free for nearly 5 weeks! I'm really trying for a few days at 800, have even changed my meal plan for tonight as I'd gone over at lunch.
On the whole I've been feeling great, and positive, but just getting a bit peed off now with feeling deprived and not getting the results.....probably just having a blue day, but its getting me down.

Not2bObvious · 30/04/2016 15:47

That sucks theaverage, have you noticed any changes elsewhere? I've severe déjà vu on this, but I'll say it as it's worth saying - scales aren't the only measure. You can't not lose on 900-1000, you'll get a whoosh soon. If you don't have a lot to lose, your body will cling desperately to its reserves. My body fights every last pound, it likes being around 12-13 stone and I've given up so many times out of frustration, but I didn't go through all this to go backwards. Leave the scales alone for a few more days, do what you've been doing. It WILL work.

H3l3naGraham · 30/04/2016 17:30

not2b is correct NewBear - hang on in there, I have been stuck too, but I know that something's happening because I'm fitting into clothes which weren't even on the radar 4 weeks ago.

I have scanned a lot ( & aren't there a lot) of the MM forums over the past 4 weeks or so & there are many, many people who get 'stuck' in the 4-5 week part of the diet. Some of the long-termers who have been doing it for well over the 8 weeks, recommend a small fatty snack in the evening after dinner (no trouble with that in this house she muses...) eg some cheese, a glass of milk, some yoghurt, it seems to work for many, might be worth a shot!

When I started dieting in Jan, it took me 3 weeks on c1k calories a day (mostly under) to lose 2lbs.....I kept at it and I am now just over 1.5stone down, my lowest weight for 12 years, am bloody well going to shift the other 1.5 by October too!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/04/2016 17:41

Thanks h3l3na and not2be , I think I will avoid the scales for a few days and see. I've just sat and got the recipe books out and done my tesco order so there's a few good things planned for next week, a few vegetarian meals, and hopefully that will get me motivated! Its such a shame because I was feeling so positive and have been really good! Today just feeling a bit 'meh' about the whole thing.....its encouraging to hear that this happens to people though, I shall keep on going!

MarvellousCake · 30/04/2016 18:54

Formal meal last night - and I seem to have survived. A good thing was that the portions were quite small. I had to give in to the tiny square of potato dauphinoise(sp?) And the creme brulee (delish) but I managed to leave the bread and the shortcake. I did drink too much though - fizz plus red wine, port and whisky. Ugh.
Only about half lb up this morning so not too bad.

Going easy on myself this weekend. Had cake with friends this afternoon but otherwise on plan and cals well below TDEE.

H3l3naGraham · 30/04/2016 19:10

Well done cake - having a treat & still below TDEE!

Went walking instead of bikes as DH couldn't face the bike with his cold hangover, he has a pedometer on his his phone so I discovered what I thought was my 10k steps walk is in fact 7.75k steps. Bummer. It's 2 miles so need to add on some distance, oh well, better to know than not!

H3l3naGraham · 30/04/2016 19:15

Nice recipe!

Not2bObvious · 30/04/2016 20:40

Well my headache has lifted but sadly it took lots of chocolate & Indian food. It's official, I can't drink and diet😔 Dry evening apart from half a glass of red, kettle bells & walk planned for tomorrow. Gone to bed as exhausted! In bed before the kids, lightweight. I'll have to take your word on the recipe H3l, I'm phobic about goats cheese. Oh roll on tomorrow when I'll feel better

Elvish · 30/04/2016 21:31

Well I'm Envy of all these brilliant losses. I'm stuck and it is depressing.

Trying to keep on keeping on, on track for 800 today and have been about there all week. Saturday night with no wine Sad.

We're at a house party tomorrow night and there will be lots of off plan food sitting about buffet style tempting me and I'll have a few drinks so my willpower will be low. But I don't want to have another no loss week due to one bad day - aargh!

Breadandwine · 01/05/2016 00:39

gram flour 'batter' which is what I make my flatbreads from, is perfect for dipping bits of fish or chicken into, to make healthy 'nuggets'

Hi H313

Being a great fan of gram flour batter (sometimes called socca), I'm going to try this (veganised, of course! Grin). I'll probably add a bit of baking powder to the batter and see what happens.

Have a look at this tempura recipe, there may be some ideas you can use.

Elvish · 01/05/2016 08:55

Ok, feeling a little better this morning as I'm back down to my low of over a week ago. So now just need to be very careful today and not sabotage myself.

Also done some measurements, since I first measured 9 weeks ago I've lost 6 inches off my waist, 2 off my thighs and 1.5 off my upper arms.

Going to keep all of this in mind whilst looking at the wine bottles and buffet later! Hopefully there will be salad, DH is doing jerk chicken which is on plan, need to avoid pasty at all costs...

Elvish · 01/05/2016 09:18

Can I ask about alternative flours and stuff please?

I've not bought anything to substitute , I've just not had any bread or more than a spoonful of flour in a cheese sauce occasionally. Is gram or whatever actually lower in carbs? Is it worth it or if I can manage should I just carry on?

And someone up thread was asking for store cupboard basics so here are mine.

Yoghurt, natural full fat or Greek
Blueberries for in the yoghurt (breakfast almost every day!)

Salad and lean protein for lunches, chicken, prawns, tuna, ham maybe.
I have a salad most days with no dressing.
Soup, veg or lentil but I don't have this often as I want bread with it.
I tried the hummus recipes in the book, but I don't enjoy them enough and even if I'm full I want something else as I'm not satisfied.

I take breakfast and lunch to work so I can't have anything that takes cooking.

Beans, lots of different types to go in salads, stews, chilli etc for bulk. Baked beans for an emergency but otherwise tins in water without salt and sugar if you can find them.

My evening meals haven't changed much.
Pork, chicken or prawns for stir fry, loads of veg and no noodles. Make a sauce from soy, garlic, ginger, chilli, bit of fresh orange juice if you want to sweeten it or a spoonful of oyster sauce.

Chilli with a little meat to a lot of beans and veg
Chicken or prawn curry, spices in either a tomato base or coconut milk with cauliflower rice
Pasta sauce, lean bacon, peppers, onions and tinned tomatoes with corgetti or butternut Spiralised
A meat and 3 veg type meal, steak, pork, lamb chops, chicken breast with a lot of veg. Maybe a bit of flavoured butter on top. More of a roast at weekends if we have people round.
Salmon fillets cooked in soy, ginger, garlic and Chinese five spice (or pork in the same) with veg

That's my standard weekly rotation and looking at it I probably need to eat less meat and have at least a couple of veggie meals a week!

I don't tend to have eggs as no one else in the house likes them and I throw a lot out as they go off. I did buy a carton of egg whites and had omelettes a few times with veg which was good as very low cal.

I bought some nuts, but if I'm doing 800 cals I don't want to waste 100 of them on a little snack, and I find it very difficult not to eat a whole packet.

Anyone else want to do a weekly menu to inspire us - mine feels very dull!

H3l3naGraham · 01/05/2016 09:29

Thank you Bread&Wine I shall give the tempura a go, haven't tried the gram flour one yet, just read about it, so will be an experiment for both of us, I'll see what I can find on the web.

Elvish - there you go, a truly brilliant NSV, 6 inches SmileSmile RESULT!!

H3l3naGraham · 01/05/2016 09:41

Hi again Elvish - you can freeze nuts, I do this all the time, chop them or not, depending upon what you need them for and bung them in a Tupperware, works perfectly. (Ditto apple juice, I freeze it in an ice-cube tray as we don't drink fruit juice very often!)

Gram flour is the one recommended in the book & on the site, it has about 53% carb per cup versus 93% for white, all purpose flour. It is also about what the flour does to blood sugar & gram flour has less of an impact on GI than wheat flour does, surging GI contributes to weight gain, blood sugar highs etc

I am dabbling with coconut flour but it uses a lot of fluid & is quite tricky to work with.

For sauce thickening I use cornflour (or gram) as I don't need nearly so much product as when I used to use wheat flour in the past.

oolaroola · 01/05/2016 10:40

That's fantastic Elvish - loads of inches difference - well done. I wish I'd measured my thighs and arms now, just did my waist, hips and bust.

I also think your food sounds really nice.

My meals are something like this:

Breakfast - greek yogurt mixed with milk kefir that I make. I add a couple of spoons of lidl ground flaxmeal that has chia and goji berries too.
Sometimes eggs of some description or the flat mushroom ideas from the book.

lunches: salads with protein or soup.

Dinners: meat with veg, stirfries, courgetti noodle tofu miso soup things.
Last night I had a roasted aubergine with a lentil and veg topping with a small crumbling of salty cheese on top.
lamb chops with veggies or salad, steak and salad, veggie curries, dahl etc.

Very meaty in general and trying to do more veggie stuff - I'm allergic to fish unfortunately.
I use walnut oil for dressings, lots of garlic, ginger, lemon juice and chilli flakes as condiments and flavour. Oh and za-aatar and sumac are really nice sprinkled on salads for flavour.

Almonds, apples almond butter, small amounts of cheese and raspberries or olives for snacks, when I get desparate. I love olives, especially spicey ones.
Lots of water and herbal teas to drink. Adding mint or lemon slices to water to pep it up a bit although I love water anyway.

Sounds a bit boring and need some new ideas. Going to do a roast lamb thing today and might have it with cauliflower mash.

My energy levels are generally much better. My 5 mile walk turned in to a lot of running yesterday - my body aches today.
Has anyone else found that they're a lot more tired in the mornings? I find it really hard to get going these days. I'm wondering if it's all the exercise I'm doing coupled with my psoriatic arthritis which generally does cause tiredness. Pain levels are much better on the whole though so it's not too bad.
