I use some of Jamie Oliver's books as well curtains, the 30 min meal s and the super food books although they aren't Calorie counted. For snacks I have had things like veg soup, carrot and cucumber sticks, or today I had some cooked prawns. To be honest though, I am finding that the more I snack, the more I want to and when I was most motivated I was going a few hours between food intervals quite happily. It's taken me a few weeks to find my rhythm so its worth experimenting with meal structure to see what works for you?

H3l3naGraham · 02/05/2016 21:43

Hi ! curtains do watch the carbs in the Hairy Dieters, you need to be selective/adapt accordingly. newbear -yep Jamie has some great recipes too!

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 03/05/2016 08:42

Have just ordered the book on kindle....it's here already so no excuse not to start now!!

Am vegetarian so am a bit worried about all the meat - I guess Quorn is a decent replacement? havent read the book yet so this all might be explained

Sputnik · 03/05/2016 09:59

I don't eat meat either, though I do eat fish. Eggs are your friend, cheese is great but make sure you weigh it as it's calorie dense. Pulses are essential I think to this way of eating and will add to your protein count, same with full fat greek yogurt. You will be fine.
Good luck to all those starting out!

H3l3naGraham · 03/05/2016 10:00

Morning all!

fools - as well as reading the book I'd have a ruthless clear out of kitchen cupboards so that temptation like pasta or biscuits (or whatever is your big weakness) is well & truly gone. I knew I wouldn't have an issue with sweet stuff, my issue would be wine, what I hadn't appreciated was the bread cravings - I genuinely didn't think we ate that much, just goes to show.

As elvish says, planning helps, as does drinking loads of water and getting steps in every day. You will learn about your body, your weaknesses, cravings etc, you will also learn how to adapt the diet to suit your needs, what foods work within the context of the diet and how to eat differently!

namechange - lentils, pulses, beans - you will no doubt be familiar with these in any case! But the book isn't that brilliant for veggie recipes, you can try the BSD recipe pages on the MM site, there are some there. I posted a nice one in this stream over the weekend for veggie polpetti, it's very tasty ( but use courgette, not pasta of course!!)

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 03/05/2016 11:02

Thanks Sputnik and H313

I think I might cry at the ruthless clear out of my cupboards..I live on pasta, potatos and bread

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/05/2016 11:44

Hi All, I had a fab BH weekend but we were away so my carbs crept up. Amazingly (even though I couldn't calorie check as there was no internet) my calories averaged 800. It's almost as though my body has adapted to know that it can survive on 800 cals. I weighed myself this morning. I'm the same as Saturday which was a relief considering I managed to squeeze some amazing handmade chocolate and a roast lunch into my calories count over the weekend Grin

Needed by week 3, I was missing pasta so I bought some konjac noodles instead. I find they provide a good base for pasta sauces. And if I'm craving macaroni cheese, I have konjac noodles with a goats cheese sauce, it comes in at 180 calories with 0.8g of carbs.

H3l3naGraham · 03/05/2016 11:52

Well done couch you must be very pleased, a lovely weekend & no scales nasty afterwards!

I can't get Konrad noodles locally, hence courgetti or celeriac spaghetti. My latest celeriac is the size of an adult's head, has anyone got any clues as to how I cut it to spiralize it - it's too big to jam on the prongs.... do I cut out like a big wedge of huge carrot eg long, or into half a football...... If you get my drift?!Confused

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/05/2016 12:33

H3l3na I don't have a spiralizer. I thought about buying one but I don't think I would use it enough Do you use your's a lot?

H3l3naGraham · 03/05/2016 13:25

Hello couch - Yes, I do use my spiralizer, DH has to use it for celeriac as my wrists aren't very strong, I use it for courgetti & carrots. I also have loads of unused gadgets, but this one has really earned its keep & I am delighted with it. Mine has 3 blades so I can make ribbons as well, which look really nice in salads. The more appetising something looks, the more fulfilling it is to eat and they are great to use for entertaining! I'm not the only one on this forum who uses one, they are popular Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/05/2016 14:15

I've contemplated a spriraliser too, but at the moment I'm just using the ready prepared courgette and butternut ones that are in tesco, or a speed peeler to make strips of courgette which do the job for now.
I'm having a meat free day today, so I've just been making my dinner for tonight, a big ratatouille with aubergine, courgette, peppers and butter beans. Made a sauce using all the odds and ends of fresh herbs from the fridgeand a few sundried tomatoes mixed with stock, and blended, with a bit of parmesan on the top. It looks good but smells divine, and made much more than I anticipated so may do 3 meals instead of 2. My freezer is pretty well stocked now with 'ready meals' I've portioned out and all calorie counted, so hopefully next week I won't have to cook at all. I do tend to have one week a month where I don't shop and we use up all our overstock, my dd calls it mother Hubbard week (the cupboards are bare!) and we put the money we would have spent in a jar for days out.
Been for a long walk this morning, but have twisted my foot doing 30ds yesterday so I won't be shredding today.

Not2bObvious · 03/05/2016 15:25

Hi all. Had an awful weigh in this morning and I'm still reeling from it. I'm working hard today to stick to plan, obviously not quite at the point I can relax! It wouldn't be physiologically possibly to truly gain the amount the scales showed so I know there's some bloat but even still I'm sure there'll be an official gain to report on Friday (my official WI) Feel very cross with myself, not looking for sympathy or advice just need to confess if you lot don't mind. Anywho, back to the drawing board😞

H3l3naGraham · 03/05/2016 15:44

I love that newbear - Mother Hubbard week.....!! I have been peeking at my cupboard too, beetroot (always like the idea but not the after-prep laundry, MONSTER celeriac, and a very soft aubergine which I will also use in a ratatouille type thing tonight; 'cept I have some chicken thighs to use up & they will be going in too, with what's left over I shall make soup in the blender for lunch for DH tomorrow, as I am going to hold a friend's hand at hospital.

Not2b - you will recover from your transgression, you'll be back on track. I am now at last, head's in right place, as I want to be able to slip squeeze into my cozzie on my hols in precisely 6 weeks' time without looking like a Miss Piggy impersonator in Lycra...

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/05/2016 16:02

I'm now Googling spiralizers Grin . I think I will wait until the end of my 8 weeks and if I still want one then I'll buy one. I am too easily swayed by shiny new purchases.

oolaroola · 03/05/2016 16:43

Hello everyone! Welcome to new starters. I second what others have said - get rid of any cupboard boobytraps and drink loads of water!

I use my spiraliser loads, it's brilliant, but I've found I prefer courgetti to pasta and noodles anyway so it's easy in that case. I even had a raw courgetti salad today - the dressing kind of softened up the strands in my lunch box and when I came to eat it it was delicious!

Oh Not it's so demoralising isn't it? I found drinking lots of water for at least 3 days levelled out the obviously water retention gain. That and lots of steps.
Hope it balances out for you.

I'm weighing in tomorrow because tomorrow I start week 5!! Blimey - how did that happen so fast?

My eventual aim is to get down to the 9 stoneish mark. I can't remember when I was last that weight but I'm thinking that it would be a good place with a bit of a buffer, but maybe my body might have other ideas. I guess sticking to an arbitrary number might be a duff idea, we'll see.

Not2bObvious · 03/05/2016 16:51

I have to admit my water drinking has gone by the wayside oola, I'm on track today though. I think I'll do a second walk after dinner, since I switched to morning walks I noticed I'm hungrier after dinner. I'm not really, it's the fact is time to think about food. Whereas before I went straight out after dinner & that stopped me nibbling, by the time I'd get back I wouldn't have that awful urge to cupboard surf! Another few thousand steps won't hurt.
H3l I've 9 weeks to bikini time so I hear you, I so so want to have a holiday with a bit more body confidence. Feeling more positive already lushettes 😉

I think Miss Piggy might look rather good in lycra H313!!
She's pretty gorgeous, for a puppet pig!
It's good when you're head is a good place for all this hard work - I think we're all doing rather well tbh. At least we're still here.

H3l3naGraham · 03/05/2016 18:36

Here we are ladies!!!

Sputnik · 03/05/2016 18:51

Grin Yep that's me!
I 2nd Oolaroola, let's stay positive here!

Not2bObvious · 03/05/2016 18:53

I love it H3l! Fifties flirty😁 Well my walk is done, well slog around for 45 mins more like. Over 19,000 steps in the bank and 799 calories in, kitchen is closed. I bagged up anything bold and hid it away, out of sight out of mind. I'm hoping for a decent sleep after all that. I did 18:6 today and it worked quite well although it's still early, urge surfing might be needed!

Hi, sorry folks but is there a diet or diet help on MN? I need help on which low blood sugar diet to follow. Pancreas been having a hard time. Blurred vision, tired etc.
Thanks.

H3l3naGraham · 03/05/2016 19:19

Hello Worcs - not sure about MNet but there is good support & threads on this type of thing on the MM BSD site, type in key words in the search box & hopefully you might get some threads come up from that.

Obs2016 · 03/05/2016 19:54

Poor cheddar!!

I am back on the straight and narrow today, after the BH where we were away in our caravan, boozing with friends, 4 days of consuming 2500+ calories and MFP telling me I was going to be back to 11 stone before long if I carried on Blush, rather then the 9 I want to be!!

Sputnik · 03/05/2016 20:13

Hi Worcswoman, take a look at the official BSD site for a good explanation of the diet, the different ways you can follow it.
As for Mumsnet there are loads of threads with people following different diets, the low carb threads may also be useful for you

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/05/2016 21:41

On 904 cals now - not too terrible! Yesterday was 723 calories, so it all balances out! I did Level 3 of the Shred again too. My new bikini top arrived today, inspiration by Royal Mail!
