Hello didreally - on the MM BSD site & In the book, they talk about blood sugar measurement kits/sticks you can buy, from what I have read, online/Amazon is way cheaper than the chemists, many of the BSDer's on MM's site do measure this way.

I was going to when I started, but fear made me go down the diet route 1st...... When I lose another stone (certainly no chance of weight loss on my hols in Italy at the moment) I will then measure. Of course a GP will be able to do the tests for you as well, but be aware that the traditional diet approach for early stage diabetics is not the MM BSD way, the traditional diets are actually carb (albeit 'good carb") rich & low fat.... Many on the MM site have battled with their GPs & practice nurses. Of course many GPs are more enlightened, yours might be. But if you haven't done so yet, do read the book!

Had another 1/2 a pizza last night, massive electric storms here + had to make a dash for a restaurant nearby, that said I did scrape the topping off & not eat much of the base!!

Makes me feel so 'solid' - eating carbs now, tasted a special local pud yesterday as DH wanted to try it, so sweet, made me desperately thirsty, so I shan't be doing that again.

Wine is what does it for me & they'll probably announce a shortage of the stuff soon, we have quaffed so much!

I have a wine night tonight. To get around it as much as possible, i have swapped the usual rose and lemonade for a bottle of red, and i am being super good today. Aiming for 1100 including the wine.

I figured that 6:1 at 800 (with the 1 at 1100) is better than nothing (i only ever drink on a thurs night)

I trying to avoid the wine beyond til tomorrow, so have 1 for me😉 Another 35 min run this morning plus a 20 min walk so nearly have my steps in the bag. Yesterday's gorge on chocolate brought my cals to 1250, shocking how much a dint a few dozen chocolates make in your allowance but it's done now and I did enjoy them. Not weighing in until tomorrow, very much hoping to see a good number, under 11.1 would be wonderful. I'm trying to plan tomorrow's night out & get my head in zone not to drink too much but out with my bro and we have form😜

H3l3na I had pizza last night too but ate more than half and did eat the base I woke during the night with stomach ache so perhaps my body was revolting against too many carbs?!
It didn't impact my WI this morning but will probably see it tomorrow.

Wine, cheese, salami, bacon, quality bread.... these are my weaknesses. So not in the best place to resist them, but....years ago I went to an expensive diet Doc, back then he was ante carb + since then have eaten very little pasta + you know what, after about a year, I got used to it, something that was a 4 times a week, easy dinner, became a rare treat. Now I need to work on the gnocchi + bread.....

My mouths watering listening to the list of food H3l, only had yog & nuts today - am day ran away from me! Going to griddle a chicken breast with a big dollop of real Mayo, then strawberries for after. Sun's shining, trying hard to resist the vino😖

Good luck not2be - I shall be on water + cucumber juice for a week once we get back!!

Well I avoided the wine mainly coz I had row with Dh and flounced off to bed but did have few oven chips with my chicken, less than a saucer full. Tired & thirsty but can't go back downstairs as may kick him as I pass him, and I'm assuming that won't improve the situation. So I guess my kitchen is closed or more accurate, off limits. A little hopeful about tomorrow's WI, here's hoping for a loss🙄

If you kicked him would it burn some exercise calories? Wink

I had tuna salad for dinner but am feeling peckish. I am hoping some mange tout will help.

I think the honeymoon period has worn off quickly as I have really struggled today: DH away, kids feral, too much to do with stroppy preschooler in tow, and I am just snappy and irritable with everything and everyone Sad

Finally driven to self-medicate with a whole days calories' worth of Nutella... Blush

Does anyone else find it hard to stay smiley and diet at the same time? Any tips or cures? Or will this hangry stage pass?!?

Day 4 here and boy it was really difficult to keep my resolve. We had friens for afternoon tea and loads of my favourites were produced. I managed to have two coffees with milk and a small bite of a homemade cookie ( a gift to me).
So not so bad but feel stressed today after saying no to such nice things....
Bring on tomorrow..

Yesterday (day 2) was tough. Today much better but I did have half a papaya which isn't really in the spirit of things, is it ?

Should I hope for a weight loss in the first week ?

Report
yumyumpoppycat · 23/06/2016 23:26

Welcome to all the new starters! It does get eaiser and yes should defo be a loss on the first week. 3-7lbs seems average. 2nd week fairly decent aswell but somewhere between week 3 and week 5 you will prob have a stay the same week or two then it should average out to a slow but steady weekly loss depending how strict you are and how much you have to lose.

Report
yumyumpoppycat · 23/06/2016 23:40

Sorry tell a lie there has been at least one poster who didn't lose the first week but not in general, 3lbs is defo realistic.

Potential reasons for a dissapointing first week would be:

  • an already low calorie expenditure (think this is why some people don't always lose well on 1200 cal diets),
  • already following low carb so no initial water loss
    *time of the month approaching
  • medical reasons
  • just being unlucky and having an initial weigh in with optimum conditions where the scale was in just the right posiition, no bloating etc going on followed by an unlucky 2nd week weigh in where the scale is in the bad position and a bit of constipation has set in etc

yum thank you for the information. I am still working out how to go after the shakes. For my lifestyle it has worked well(apart rrom my constipation) even though it is slim fast therefore high carb. Wish there was one with lower carbs higher protein.
didi welcome to fellow newbie!!!

I did it, mum-friends were very proud of me sticking to my one bottle and no crisps or anything Grin
I was very drunk off it, having only eaten about 500cal, but i reckon i can stick to that (and 500 cal is only the equivalent of a 5:2 fast, so not starving)

Having black coffee, greek yog and blueberries for breakfast now, veg curry and lentil soup for lunch with a fudge green tea, roast pork and cauli for dinner and houmous and celery for snack. Comes in at 797 :)

Weighed in this morning and I've lost 1.5lb since Wednesday, which I totally wasn't expecting. This week I have basically maxed out on my calories each day and have scraped a few days under 1000, but I'm the most part have remained low carb and sugar free. So something must have all balanced out somewhere? I also haven't had any caffeinated coffee this week so not sure how or if that might have made a difference, but definitely feeling less stressy and sleeping better so maybe it's just better insulin control.
MsMarple I also have young children and I totally understand what you''re saying! Aside from the fact they eat all the time, they also leave you flagging by mid afternoon. I have found the 'slump' much less pronounced since quitting sugar so hang on in there. I also admit defeat some days, and have extra 'on plan' calories, rather than demolishing half a pack of barney bears while hiding in the larder.....I stock up on chicken pieces, crab sticks, do some hard boiled eggs etc for those times, but avoid nuts as I will just eat the whole bag!!

I'm down 1.4 from last Friday to 11.1 - oh so close to 10. I remember it being very difficult to get from the 12's to 11's (and bloomin' stay there!) I'm pretty much 2 months wavering from 11.5 to 11.1'ish (was 11.0.8 for like 5 mins) I think I need to give up the 🍷to break through but we all know that's highly unlikely hic Anyway happy Friday one & all. Let's try not to ruin the weeks work over 3 days (that's to me really😩)

Well done bear Sometimes I think 'it's not for us to reason why' and just happily accept any weight loss even if we have no idea how it all balanced out Grin

Not2bI would be tempted to move the scale round the room just in case it loses 0.1 somewhere.

My aim is to lose another 0.3lbs between today and Monday so that I finish this week with a total loss of 1.5 stones since I started BSD. I've lost 1.2lbs so far this week so not sure if I'll lose that extra 0.3lbs or not.

Thanks for the encouragement yum, I'll give that a shot, but I'm going to change the number to 10.12 - go big or go home😉 May as dream here as in bed! Super job bear, that's a really nice drop in 2 days. I cannot contemplate cutting caffeine, even less than the vino but I wonder if it's part of my problem couldn't possibly be me eating 10,000 cals every weekend

I miss caffeine more than sugar! I had just noticed myself having more and more, and it definitely affects my sleep. Then the knock on of a bad nights sleep, eat more, drink more coffee etc. I have a stinking headache today though!

I have been meaning to ask; have any of you heard of or use the app 'happy scale'? I've just installed it on my phone, but from what I can gather it seems to be a weight loss tracker that uses all your weigh ins from the week to calculate your average loss rather than seeing the fluctuations. I wonder if it might be motivating for some of us who have definite good days/ bad days and then torture ourselves with the Monday morning weigh in?
