Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

You've all got me thinking about curry now, I'm starving!

Might be worth looking at something with chickpeas or lentils in the curry house, if you cut the meat you'd save plenty of cals even with all the oil.

Try not to go too mad Obs, don't be miserable but you don't want to undo all the hard work you've put in so far.

Elvish · 17/03/2016 18:05

And, where does MM stand on sweet potato? Can I have it or not?

Also, popcorn? If we can have sweet corn then popcorn should be ok??

yumyumpoppycat · 17/03/2016 18:20

Elvish it probably depends whats on the popcorn - the calories can be eye watering I got a shock when I looked up cinema popcorn on MFP! I think strictly speaking we are supposed to avoid starchy carbs like sweet potato but a small amount is prob ok? I have had roasted root veg a few times - jerusalem artichoke cooked in small chunks with a roast chicken was yumola (I added in chicken fat on MFP!) Big choc has said that parsnips are not ok though so possibly its best to only have root veg in small amounts.

Well done on getting past 8 weeks too obs.

Obs2016 · 17/03/2016 23:05

Back home. No carbs. No rice, no peshwari naan!! But I did have white wine. A few glasses. And tonnes of water - I drank 2 jugs. Not great, but not a calamity.

yumyumpoppycat · 18/03/2016 10:20

Well done obs Halo

I have been grazy today and feeling slightly jittery. Also a 1lb up but that is salt I think rather than overeating. II need to get back on to calorie countingI think!

zobalina77 · 18/03/2016 11:07

End of week 3 and another 3lb gone, 17lb in total. However my weight has stayed the same for the last 4 days, so hoping for a whoosh soon.

Have gone out for breakfast with my H and have ordered a child's breakfast but will not eat the hash brown and only have a few of the beans, total calories 355, so not too bad.

H3l3naGraham · 18/03/2016 12:36

Thank you Elvish good idea about lentils/chick-peas, I have never really used much in the way of chick-peas in cooking, but am learning now, lentils especially green ones are yum yum, even DH will eat them when I braise them lightly in stock with garlic, onion and a very small amount of chopped carrot.

Sweet potato & potato are confusing, I've now read more than I care to remember about the advantages & disadvantages of both.... MM says spuds are not devil-food and can be eaten, but in moderation, they are foods to be 'eaten with caution' so tonite is a "caution night", grilled fish with herbs & lemon with half a modest sized sweet-potato cut into chips & baked in the oven ... ! No mushy peas, just what old-fashioned restaurants call a medley, ie what's left in the fridge, steamed!

Well done Obs you did so well resisting temptation, only hope that I can do the same as you next week, fingers crossed!!

6 almonds for breakfast along with green-slime juice (from Sirt diet), Miso soup, with some added leafy greens and a tiny bit of turkey I found in the freezer left over from Christmas, chopped into it very small..... If I don't get back onto this stream, then you know I should have fed it to the seagulls!!!

Incidentally, I have swapped from my intravenous-drip of Sauvignon Blanc to red wine, it has less sugar, so when I have one of my 2 drinkie-nights, I get the blood-red lipstick look for free.......

Obs2016 · 18/03/2016 20:09

I've been doing very badly. Yesterday (despite the no rice no naan) and also today I've gone over the 800 not by just a few but by 1000+, and no that doesn't have an extra 0!!

I'm off tomorrow for the weekend for my best friends hen.

I guess I'll just have to get back on it on Monday.

yumyumpoppycat · 18/03/2016 20:11

I found today difficult too, was sort of a day off but potentially 2000! Back to 800 tomorrow FOR DEFINATE

Breadandwine · 19/03/2016 00:53

Your secret's safe with me, Laska! You'll be back on the main thread before you know it. Smile

It's true I'm around a lot of freshly baked bread - but it all goes home with my students! For myself I've brought my daily consumption of it down to about 30-35g/day. So, about 200g per week.

I bake a large wholemeal loaf, which I freeze after slicing, and take out one slice for my lunch each day. I used to have a 100g bread roll each day, so I've reduced that hugely.

The freezer really is my friend - similarly, if I make a cake, I try and freeze it in chunks ASAP. Don't always succeed, mind! Grin

ScoutandAtticus · 19/03/2016 09:41

Morning all. I've had another wobble over the last few days. Lack of sleep and a very stressful situation involving my builder has sent me off track. I had a mini binge session last night - carbs, wine etc. No where near as bad as I would have before and interestingly there was a voice in my head saying "noooooo". Just a shame I ignored it!

Weigh in and I am still 6lbs down. That's 3 weeks in and most of which I have faffed about. I have had more days off than on but I am definitely eating less carbs, more protein and less food overall. Really need to concentrate on sticking to it.

Elvish · 19/03/2016 09:42

Might just be good to put it out of your mind Obs and have a great weekend.

I really wanted wine last night, but I made myself wait until after I'd finished eating. Once I'd had a pint of water with my meal I had one sip of wine and decided I didn't want any more. Feeling quite pleased with that.

So, after promising myself I wouldn't weigh in every morning, then buying scales and using them every day, yesterday they broke! I now officially weigh 0st 0lb - this diet is really working Wink

I've been counting carbs and I have no idea how you can stay under 30g a day. I used more than that yesterday on breakfast and lunch which was just yoghurt with blueberries and salad with chicken Confused If you stay under 30 or 40g what do you eat??

zobalina77 · 19/03/2016 11:34

At my boys school spring fair and have won a bottle of wine and some chocolates. Will have to feed them to my H later on. I really struggled last night with cravings but managed to get through it.

yumyumpoppycat · 19/03/2016 12:09

Scout Flowers well done though it sounds like your nooo voice didn't let things go to far.

I am still not totally on track today but will be I promise, at least I am entering on MFP. We had dc's friends round for a sleepover that's my excuse not a very good one as they were well behaved and polite

zobalina that is so typical to win those prizes when you shouldn't be having them! At least they should keep in a cupboard for a month or 2!

yumyumpoppycat · 19/03/2016 12:10

elvish - you don't have to count carbs - your food sounds like you are following the guidelines, another thing is you might have clicked on an inaccurate entry on MFP.

H3l3naGraham · 19/03/2016 13:59

I have discovered coconut water, this is quite nice to drink, in small quantities & I have been adding it to my morning veggie juice-smoothy drink thing, makes it more palatable, am also adding it to the faux-smoothie I make for DH, (celery, 1/2 Apple, 8 blueberries, 6 raspberries & juice of 1/2 lime). Bought some coconut flour too, so am going to experiment with that after I take my large backside out on a walk. DH has discovered the bread I had hidden at the bottom of the freezer and had 2 small slices for his brunch, but it was rye and I believe this has a lower GI than others, so I haven't chucked the rest of the loaf out. Yet.

Good luck over the weekend everyone, have had to say no to a lunchtime pub gig tomorrow as there's no way I will be able to keep my sticky mitts off the wine, have decided to sort out my wardrobe instead and get rid of everything that is now too big, the local charity shops will benefit & it will keep my idle hands busy!

HanYOLO · 19/03/2016 21:04

Be careful with coconut water H3l3na - some brands have added sugar (or coconut sugar). I like it and used to have a fair bit of it but bought some on the move a couple of weeks ago and didn't seen the sugar content until too late (M&S version from train station). innocent brand is ok, as are some of the brands from ethnic stores. Vita Coco also has "fruit sugar".

smoothie sounds nice though - try unsweetened almond milk too. homemade or alpro both good.

be intrested in how the coconut flour experiments go!

HAving a hungry and consequently slightly grumpy day

zobalina77 · 19/03/2016 23:43

Tomorrow I'm spending the day at my friend's. She is very against low carb diets and is a nurse who did her dissertation on diabetes. I've managed to hide eating this way from her so far as I find it difficult to discuss it with her due to her bringing up lots of things she learnt at uni. Though I think I made her suspicious last week when we went out for lunch and I had chicken Caesar, no croutons, dressing on the side.

So she is a bit of a feeder and will no doubt be making cakes and something with pasta. I'm there all day so what do I do? I'm thinking take a packed lunch and fess up might be best, but she will make lots of (outdated) arguments and I don't want to fall out.

Cheby · 20/03/2016 07:21

Been a week or so since I last popped in, just caught up on everyone's brilliant updates. Well done all. 😀

I am nearing the end of week 4 (Tuesday morning is my 4 week weigh in). I am currently 10.5kg down. Can't quite believe it! Still a very, very long way to go to being a healthy weight but I feel so much better and I'm back at the weight I was at pre DC, at my wedding back in 2012. In fact I tried an old bridesmaid dress on when visiting DPs yesterday (worn in 2010) and it fitted. It was actually slightly looser than it was at my sister's wedding (although post pregnancy and c section my stomach is a different shape and sticks out more).

When DH and I started this we decided to do 4 weeks, then a week of 5:2, then another 4 weeks, because it's DD's birthday, we have loads of family events planned and I'm making her cake, and I just can't imagine doing all that while sticking to 800kcal and low carb.

I'm expecting to put a bit of weight back on during the week, but hopefully it'll come off quickly again.

Has anyone else had a short break then gone back to the diet?

H3l3naGraham · 20/03/2016 09:57

Thank you so much HanYOLO, I will get out my magnifying glasses & have a good old gander at what's in the fridge, bl00dy sugar, it's everywhere. Spotted that my naked ie no dressing, chilled prawns from M&S contain water & guess what, sugar...... I mean WTF, they are prawns they don't need sugar!!

Guess I'll have to resort to the tedious process of de-veining raw prawns, that or swap them for even more salmon, my 'fast-food' standby.

Good luck zobalina77 - perhaps your friend will reserve judgement when she sees how well you are doing, that or you could fib & tell her you have a suspected gluten allergy which is being investigated...... You could still do some small spuds without it going OTT diet-wise and at least this would help with cake, pasta & bread issues..... gen-up on gluten allergy, ie bloating & the runs before you go in case she quizzes you........

Obs2016 · 20/03/2016 11:38

Zobalina, what a shame about your friend the nurse. Why are some people stuck in the. 60's and draconian? Makes me do sad.

Obs2016 · 20/03/2016 11:40

I was ok on my hen weekend: Scallops, prawns and 1 glass of wine.
But, the most delicious piece of cheesecake I've ever had in my LIFE. And cheesecake is my absolute fave. Cake

HanYOLO · 20/03/2016 11:45

M&S are demons for that H3l3na, I only go there when I'm at the station for journey fuel or if I'm fetching something for my mum, but I've found it really difficult - even things like their roast chicken etc have sugar in!

Oh zobalina I feel your pain. It's terrible that I should feel like this but I am not telling anyone about my diet at the moment - whilst no-one would deny that I need to lose weight, everyone would have an opinion on low cal and low carb. I think I would just be upfront with her and say you know she won't approve but you are just trying it out as an experiment and you would appreciate it if she just let you go with it this time. I would think if you kept off actual white flour stuff you could get away with a small portion of spuds or rice.

Cheby that is awesome progress (had you a lot to lose to start with?). It's going slower than that for me but I am late 40s and the fat's been here for 10 years (with 3 babies in between) so I was expecting that. Somewhere someone has recommended 5:2 between LBS phases for more weight loss, so I'm sure its not disastrous. I expect the main thing is mindset - getting back into the under 800 cals after a more free and easy time. I imagine the weightloss might slow but not stop entirely. We need Big Choc for expert view!

zobalina77 · 20/03/2016 12:23

My friend looked a bit suspicious of me having yogurt and strawberries for breakfast and asked if I wanted sugar on them! I have explained I have brought my own lunch as its leftovers from last night and would just be thrown away otherwise, and she has accepted that.

No mention of baking a cake yet so I think I'm going to be OK.

H3l3naGraham · 20/03/2016 12:36

Well done Obs you must have tried really hard, Cheby the only break I have had has been the odd weekend off towards the end of Sirt dieting before I started BSD but I tried hard not to eat certain things & it worked, I didn't gain more than half a pound both times, despite the industrial quantities of wine consumed.

I cook mostly from scratch to be 'safe' HanYolo and am gutted that chicken has sugar in it as well as prawns, might wing a letter off to The Times, makes me soooooo angry!

Bad enough that older people ie who aren't online can't benefit from the Sparks points, never mind playing with our tastebuds, but the Sparks points is another issue (not just M&S) & I might well start a stream on this.
