Just wondering if anyone has tried this and how it went? I am about ten days in and coping well so far.

I have been low carbing for years on and off, and on 5:2 since Sept which seems to make the fasting easier.

Im thinking of giving this a go,have just bou8ght the book . I did really well on 5:2 a couple of years ago, but fell off the wagon (big time but am not discussing that!! ) and think I need to have a new approach, I like MMs thinking and really want to get back to being slim, .

So is this going to be the offical BS thread or are you all joining the 5:2 thread?

Hi Mapless,(what was to your old name?) still love hot sauce, but now feeling too much of a 5:2 failure to come back really so thought i'd try a new approach..

BigChocFrenzy · 25/01/2016 21:33

Anyone who wants to do the 800-cal part of the Blood Sugar diet - intended to reverse T2 or preT2 - is also very welcome to post on the main fasting threads, currently #60, for support & advice.

IguanaTail · 25/01/2016 22:34

I need to have some "mix and match" ideas really. Half an avocado is nice, but what about the other half? Can you just create your own plan using the ingredients or are you really meant to stick to the meals suggested?

Yddraigoldragon · 25/01/2016 22:47

Iguana I am not following the menu plan at all, I count out my 800 calories on mfp, low carb, all cooked from scratch and sort of med.

I bought fish cakes. The calories are ok but are the carbs too much? It's haddock.

iguana I suppose the real thing is whetherthey are mostly potato or not... cant really tell from your photo

Well I have read the book now and am pretty keen!,

I really want to get this weight I put back on, off again ! (and as fast as I can!) ,

So today , I had 3 small eggs scrambled a smidge of butter for breakfast , half a pot of tomato soup and a 56g can of tuna for lunch , and (as i was eating out with DS,) a pizza hut leggara superfood salad with chicken, for dinner!

Also a couple of cups of black coffee and some ( but probably not quite enough) of water

MFP has put it at exactly 800 cals and 34 carbs so I am happy with that for day one!

I have a fitbit HR also , which I got a few n monhs ago , but since it was raining hard at lunchtime and earlier this evening have only done 9355 steps today.

I have also joined up onthe official blood sugar diet website, is anyone else there ?

SwedishEdith · 26/01/2016 22:57

I read a few years ago about an extreme low calorie diet reversing T2 diabetes. Was it a French guy? I know MM is very concerned about T2 because his dad had it but is he actually prediabetic? (I'm assuming that means he's likely to get T2 if he doesn't strictly control his intake and exercises?). My mum had T2 so I do try to follow what he says about how to avoid it.

800 calories is nothing though. Out of curiosity, I've been logging what I eat on MFP for about a week - 1300 calories a day is just about doable for me. I would be self-digesting on 800.

IguanaTail · 26/01/2016 23:04

I had quite a good day one. I did it into fitness pal and it came up as 900 calories. Drank loads of water from my new water bottle (with lemon in the fruit basket inside infusing thing).

Laska5772 · 26/01/2016 23:05

SwedishEdith does your guy recommend low carb though? MM does and he has some very interesting research in his book with regard to the 'traditional' advice for the correct diet for diabetes.

I dont have the condition, but have realised that I am one of those people who could very well be liable ,a definate apple shape, and these days I put on weight round my stomach in preference to everywhere else.

SwedishEdith · 26/01/2016 23:08

Not sure of the detail but possibly was low carb. He sort of self treated himself, if I remember the story correctly.

Me too with putting on weight around the stomach. Should get a blood test just to see what's happening, really.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2016 09:34

On the main thread #60 I'm encouraging those with poss Blood Sugar issues to try Mosely's suggested special version of 5:2

5:2 Blood Sugar Diet

  • 2 x 800 FDs
  • 5 x Low Carb Mediteranean NFDs
CiderwithBuda · 27/01/2016 11:23

Hello - I'm very interested in this too. Starting today. Am about half way through the book and will hopefully finish it this afternoon.

I've a chequered history with dieting. Have tried them all. Including 5-2 - waves at BigChoc.

I'm 15 st 7 and carry most of it around my middle. My dad is T2 - I'm going to send him the book actually. He is pretty good with food but loves his beer!

I'm keen on losing weight obv. The quicker the better! Other diets seem to stretch into infinity with slow losses. Also very keen on warding off diabetes as I'm a def risk. I love Med type foods and beans and legumes etc so I think the food will really suit me. A bit concerned about 800 cals a day and how I will cope but want to try. If I struggle I will follow the 5:2 Blood Sugar Diet.

I'm a wine-oholic so that will be a struggle. It's always my downfall.

I'm planning on trying some of the recipes in the book and will try cook mostly from scratch but I might supplement with some of the M&S Balanced For You meals if the carb counts are low.

Will track on MFP.

I've been trying to do slimming world but struggle with it and the pushing of sugary Muller Lights etc so I'm quite excited about doing this and feeling healthy. I def feel better on less carbs.

So far today I've had a slice of German style rye bread and two poached eggs. Lunch will be soup - home made veg with cannelini beans - and dinner will be salmon and stir fry veg. Will figure out calories later and see how I feel on it.

Laska5772 · 27/01/2016 18:34

Day 2 ! Am liking a lot so far! I got on the scales and 4lb had dissapeared from yesterday! the trouble with scales though, (even my super digital ones ), is that they can go up and down like crazy during the week .. however , a nice start - even if it cant be n more than a strange blip, (or perhaps Monday's weight was the blip!)

Anyway today i had
B>. 3 med eggs scrabled in tiny amount of butter,
L> half a pot of tomato soup.. (I wont buy this again because its got sugar in,) half a small avocado with a dessert spoon of cottage cheese, and small chicken breast
D> small chickn breast poached in stock with red peppers, onion and lots of broccolli

3 black coffees ( cant live without my coffee)
several glasses of water
comes to 814 cals on MFP.

Steps only just over 8000 so far, so not so good , but again its been doing a ruddy typhoon outside..

So how is everyone else doing?

cider Wine is my downfall also its responsible for my fall from 5:2 grace and so ,.. I decided to give it up for 8 weeks! (there, ive said it!!) . I havent had any since saturday and I dont have anything to go to until 18th March , a wedding, (which luckily is nigh on 8 weeks!)

Laska5772 · 27/01/2016 19:18

Last time I did a 'proper' diet (which was 5:2) and stuck to it I found I was eating near enough the same things on each fast day, obviously if I'm gooing to be doing this for 8 weeks I cant be eating the same things every day , but It certainly looks like tomorrow will be pretty much a repeat of today, as I have just weighed up my tomorrows meals.. (and precooked 200 cals worth of chicken)

Bordercollielover · 27/01/2016 20:01

Hi LAska, I think we are in much the same situation! I was also around on the earliest 5:2 threads and had amazing success.........until I reached a plateau, eventually gave up and piled it all back on and more. No matter how much I try I cant cope with a 500 calorie day any more. i dont know why, because in 2012 i could go the full 36 hours with no calories at all.
however, i CAN manage 800 cals though whether i will be able to do it every day remains to be seen
the book described me perfectly : prediabetic range (i think), years of fat accumulated all over and more recently around the gut too, a predilection for grain based carbs and enormous portions etc etc.
i am one day behind you ( day 1 nearly completed on approx 800 cals.
where are you getting your carb goals from? i only read about the 800 calories and med style diet but since Prof Taylor used sweetened commercial shakes i assumed there were no carb recommendations. did i miss it?
I have also registered on the BloodSugardiet site with a slightly shorter name.

Here's hoping this one does the trick and having emptied out the liver and pancreatic fats we will no longer put weight back on so quickly!

Laska5772 · 27/01/2016 20:22

HI border Glad you are here! do you have the same name as then .I'm sure that i remember you (or may have seen you elsewhere on MN?) .

Yes i was an early 5;2 adopter (on Thread 1 even!) and did really well, but sadly its mostly gone back on ,

I'm a bit ashamed to say how much as lots of people seem to still remember me and so many of the people I recognise are still doing well .. (Sad and vain arent I? ). it was 'maintenance,' kicking back and Wine that did it.. I can do 500 cals but havent made it back into a regular thing..

Also when I was so successful before I was working in a little office all on my own, most of the day , and not having people around eating made it easier, now i'm in a shared office , I just cant get away from food ! I tink 800 cals everyday,

I havent found any carb goals, but I think someone on the BSDiet site asked about it . However it seems to be working out on my 2 days experience!) at about 30-40 , but I haven had any pulses yet..

Glad you are here, I'm hoping that this wil become a nice little support group like 5:2 did .

yumyumpoppycat · 27/01/2016 20:46

I am so excited to see others trying this who were on the first threads {waves} , I was too also have a chequered diet history . I have name changed twice since then though. 4lbs is brill Laska.

Basically I did 5:2 from pretty much the original horizon prog and kept it up for 8 months but lost very little weight, certainly not a noticeable amount, and had gained a bit back so decided to try adding in Paleo. I then found the weight whizzed off and other great side effects without needing to fast so dropped the 5:2 element ...unfortunately it has proven frustrating to get my young children to turn into caveman and socialising with my friends usually meant coffee and cake and wine etc so it was hard to maintain, and hard to get back on the wagon if I fell off, hence I am back where I started pretty much (well a bit less at least).

I def get blood sugar issues when eating too many carbs and not exercising. Having read the book I have remembered some blood tests I had before christmas and the only thing that came back abnormal were connected to my Liver functioning, the GP thought it was just a mistake or that I prob drank alcohol the night before, but I don't drink very often and am fairly sure I hadn't the night before the test, so scarily fat from food could be what affected the results? My waist and body fat measurements put me at risk so I really need to prioritise getting the weight off once and for all.

Also enjoying the diet and finding 800 more manageable, in terms of health mediterranean diet seems like a good bet and not too restrictive . This week I managed (MFP) 843, 1025, and 898 today, I also managed a 20 hour herbal tea fast by skipping dinner one eve. I think the reasons 5@2 didn't work for me were that I did not improve the type of food I was eating, and pos the 500 cals were too low for me.

Laska5772 · 27/01/2016 21:11

poppy Hi (whisper me your old MN name? mine was almost the same - laska42 I only changed it after the hacker last year )

This is encouraging.. though i'm hungry tonight .. and fancy a square or 2 of dark chocolate , but wont! have water with lemon in, and ill be in bed early with my mint tea,

one of the things I remember that was great for motivation on 5:2 was the time when i'd lost about 10 lbs (quite quickly) and went through the wardrobe finding I could zip things up! it did seem to go from my tummy first also ( where its mostly gone back!) .

I too found lower carb worked then , but yes ive just not been able to get back to 500 cals and stick with it. so I'm quite excited about DrM's new method, also 8 weeks on 800 sounds eminently doable, then hopefully I can move onto his 5:2 Blood sugar 'Mediterranean' diet as (hopefully!) 'maintenance'

Bordercollielover · 27/01/2016 21:13

Yes, I was also doing 5:2 from that first airing of Horizon and on the early 5:2 threads here. You won't have seen me anywhere else, Laska, I am far too old for Mumsnet really but the fasting support was brilliant so I came back when I recognised you on the BloodSugardiet forum.
I don't do scales but thought I would follow my waist measurement........and OMG the bloody tape measure will not even reach round where my waist used to be ( never mind any hips, I would need 2 tapes joined together). With a bit of guesswork I'd say I am about 9 inches above the recommended safe waist limit for women. What a challenge.

Laska5772 · 27/01/2016 21:27

Cool Border..it's really good to get back with old diet buddies .. I'm all excited now! ..we can do it !

Bet you're not too old , do you remember Bread and Wine? He's still around (and doing well on 5:2 still) and in his 70's! . Im 59 this year also

Well i'm off with my tea and book to bed now , my heating has just turned itself off and im feeling a bit cold , ( I remember being cold on 5:2 also ,when i started, though that did wear off )

Think ill re-read Dr M , see if I can find anything about carb recommendations , (but i dont think there were, I think hes just saying reduced carb and give up the 'white' stuff , rather than go ultra low carb..(which is good , I once tried Atkins and ooh, blimey It Did NOT do my guts any good IYSWIM Wink )

ivykaty44 · 27/01/2016 22:00

I'm on day three,

It's got to get easier - right?

I have stuck to the 800 calories each day, possibly slightly less on Monday and I did spin.

Walking every day.

But can't deny I'm hungry.

I have a hard boiled egg in the fridge for tomorrow in case I need it...!

IguanaTail · 27/01/2016 22:20

Greek yogurt is my saviour. Using it for breakfast with oats and some frozen fruit overnight; using it instead of mayonnaise. It's so filling. Day 3 has gone well except for a large biscuit. Feel better for it as well.
Breakfast and lunch prepared in fridge already. Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 27/01/2016 22:21

Yumyum Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is becoming increasingly common now. It is basically caused by too much sugary junk.
The liver damage is v similar way to what is caused by too much booze.

So the BSD sounds a really good idea for you.
