Laska42 · 21/07/2014 18:14

Hi there, Im one of the 'old original' 5:2ers who started way back in August 2012 and lost 24lbs..

I maintained for over a year and was active on the Maintainers thread , but sadly since last summer/Autumn, ive backslid.. Now I'm 12lbs up off my lowest weight again Sad

I know what to do , I know it works , but I can hardly say I should be on the 'maintainers' again. So im posting a new thread here , in the hope that I may find some other backsliders willing to recommit along with me before it's too late ..

Come and join me again before its too late.. We can regroup and get back on track.. I'm still managing to squeeze into my sz 10s (mostly) but I cant afford a new wardrobe, I dont want to buy a larger one.. and I certainly do want to get back to what I was (and maybe finish the job properly with another half stone off , so I can rejoin the Maintainers and comfortably say that this WOE is really this time going to stay with me for life..

So anyone with me? .. I have fasted today (first one for ages) .. WE CAN DO IT AGAIN!!

Morning all and thanks Laska for setting up this great thread!

I too was on the original thread from Aug 2012 and over the space of 6 months lost well over a stone and finally fit back in to pre pregnancy jeans (DS1 born Oct 2011).

However I fell off the wagon as such in March 2013 when I found out I was expecting DS2 Grin. DS2 is now 7 months and I need to lose approximately 3 stone. It is so hard to fast while sleep deprived (the boy will not sleep) but I am going to try.

First FD today and I am having 2 weetabix and skimmed milk for breakfast, half a butternut squash glorious soup for lunch and two quorn sausages and a big plate of vegetables for dinner. I am aiming for around 500-800 calories to start with as I am still breastfeeding (although not exclusively now).

Good luck everyone. I will try and post as often as poss in between running after my 2.5 year old and 7 month old ha! Smile

Chocupid · 22/07/2014 12:30

Morning everyone!

Feeling better already after a Successful FD yesterday (finally)
Maybe this hot weather will quel our appetites.

I'm similar stats Necklace i need a stone off as I'm only 5ft 2 and beginning to look round...

Not great at cooking but I remember using hairy dieters recipes a lot if I cooked or calorie counted ready meals and shakes for FD meals.
I tended to save all my cals for dinner, the less I thought about food the better for me.

So Today I weigh 9st 13

I weighed 8st 13 when I stopped (tailed off from winter really last year) but started at 11st 13, so we know it works!

Bust 37.5 in (not fussed about that as always busty too 30G)
Waist 29 in
Hips 39.5 in

I do remember last year when I got to goal I had lost my bum, looked like a deflated balloon, so this time I'm upping the excersice in the hope it will stay sort of toned.
But I'm 44, Is it true as you age you have to chose between your arse and your face?? Sad

Good luck to all you fasting today!

spookyskeleton · 22/07/2014 18:04

So I weighed myself...14st 9! Because of my height and frame, losing 2 and a half stone should be enough. I think my target will be by Christmas which should be doable.

Hudsoncolly · 22/07/2014 18:31

Hope everyone's getting through their day successfully, fasters and non-fasters alike.

I'm on a NFD and fighting the urge to pig out. Find it easier on FD's tbh, when temptation is off the menu Grin

Weighing in at 11st 4, 5'6" mid-fifties. Can't do measurements as I haven't got a tape measure.

Not sure what my 'ideal' weight should be, but I've decided to make small, achievable targets for myself - like now my next target is 10st 13(and a half), and to hopefully keep losing until I feel at a comfortable weight.

Laska42 · 22/07/2014 19:54

spooky and hudson I was 13st 10 when i got married again 8 years ago.. and did a few years on weight watchers ( but that is the devils diet ).. it took me almost 4 years to get to 11.12 (or 11.10 cant remember) where i was when i started 5:2 in 2012 .. then I lost the final weight in six months .. (ok so ive put some of it back on again .. which is why im here .) So do not despair .. at least we are on the best and most long-term sustainable WOE..

Well, I actually have fasted again today .. I didnt mean to but it been like an effin oven in the office today and I just didnt want to eat.. This evening I have had a bit of cold turkey and courgette meatloaf and some grren salad and feel stuffed. So an unintended result .. Definately wil lleave it until Thursday now ( unless its the same as today and i dont want to eat again )

Did everyone get their OOooOoOo's (water) in ? ..I took a bootle coool bag with a half froszen 1.5 lbottle in and topped it up.. Am still glugging more now though ..and visiting the loo a lot

Btw more stats... I'm 5'6" and 56 .. and I think ill record my weight and measurements on Tuesdays here..

Have just confirmed with my friend that im going to France end of September!! So I havea 10st goal in mind for that .. (wont dare to dream of less yet) ..

I can't even remember why I fell off, so it can't have even been a significant reason, probably just laziness! agreed Necklace . I think I got a bit complacent as well - went down a dress size and thought I'd just stay there with no effort!

So Laska, you sound confident on losing a stone in two months - I never even DREAM of getting to 10st, lowest I've been since giving up smoking (10 years ago) was 10st 8, which seems like a fairy tale to me now!

Haven't drunk much water today, does fruit and mint tea count towards water intake?

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 22/07/2014 20:47

I fell off the 5:2 last year too and was absolutely horrified how much weight went back on. I ended up heavier than I had ever been pregnant! I've now lost it all again with healthy eating and exercise. I don't think I was designed to have 2 very low cal days a week!

AngieM2 · 22/07/2014 21:19

I'm in. Started last July and lost 16lb got down to 10stone. Haven't fasted properly this year, just odd ones but had pretty much maintained by anything up to 10.4 but have just been to cornwall where i scoffed and scoffed and have put on 7lb. I'm desperate to ditch that quick as its a special wedding anniversary in 3 weeks. I then want to get to 9.10 before a very big hol in October. I can do this. First fast tomorrow. Its going to be hell i'm sure.

plecofjustice · 22/07/2014 21:42

I'm kinda surfing off the back of the wagon - I've not yet let go, but I'm definitely not in the solid 5:2 camp anymore.

I did it for a year until my wedding last September, then got a bit stupid just before the wedding and starved myself. My body just refused to do any more than 6:1 for a few months after that, so until Xmas, I was just taking it easy and eating more or less what I wanted. I also started doing more exercise though.

So now I'm back kinda 5:2'ing. Body doesn't tolerate 500cal, so I let it go to 6-700, those extra couple of hundred calories are the difference between functional and non-functional. Doing a lot more exercise and feeling healthy, but I've stopped weighing myself and am sticking to NSgoals - the weight isn't going down, but the fitness and clothes fit is improving.

To be honest, I'm not going to thrash myself - if something comes along on a fast day, I'll break my fast and pick it up next week. It's not running my life anymore.

PrimalLass · 23/07/2014 07:38

FD today. I was 11.6 on Mon, 11.5 in Tue and 11.4 today. I always forget how much I bloat at ovulation.

Going to keep myself busy. I will get an M&S meal for dinner.

Laska42 · 23/07/2014 13:34

just popping in lunch tim e to say Hi and to encourage all fasters today I'm Not fasting today .. Smile but because its still a bit effing hot in my office (we cant aford air conditionin gin th epublic sector .. im just having a packet of sliced cold chicken and some home grown cherry tomatoes ..(and lots of OoOoOoOoOoOo of course) .. tonight it wil besomething withthe glut of courgettes again. (joy) .. probably a frittata ..

There was something somewhere about why lots of water helps weightloss and you certainly need it when fasting ,because of the loss of fluid from your food..

ill try and remember to and look it up when i get home .

plecofjustice · 23/07/2014 15:23

I'm the same - office has no aircon and I'm sat in the sunny window, so every time I stand up, I have to peel my dress off the back of my thighs (yuck!) Fasted yesterday and it actually really helped. That and a lovely long swim after work!

Mondayschild78 · 23/07/2014 15:33

Just popping in to say hello and good luck to everyone fasting. It's a NFD for me today so enjoying that ha! Next FD tomorrow... I hope it gets easier as yesterday was tough.

ClaireFraser · 23/07/2014 23:54

Evening all, name changer here (was ANecklaceOfRaindrops).

First fast day yesterday, wasn't too bad. I gave myself a higher limit of 750 to ease myself in more gradually. The old tricks are coming back to me, no breakfast, mini lunch, save most cals for supper.

Have remembered that fruit seems to make me hungrier, so despite looking forward to my amazing juicy fresh peach all morning, it left me bloody hungry all afternoon!

I think I'll have to have a read of the old threads, trying to remember which protein/veg gives you the most bang for your buck on a FD.

Also need to work out my TDEE as have a horrible feeling that I've just eaten back all of yesterday's saved calories Sad

Just seem to want to snack all the time at the moment, which isn't like me at all. Have put that 6lb on solely in the last two months due to snacking. I really need to break the mindset and reduce the amount of sugar I eat. I'm convinced it's the sugar that does it to me, I seem to lose all sense of willpower and just want to eat everything and everything in sight once I've had something sugary.

Need to go back to my old habits of using maple syrup or honey or dried fruit for my sweet fix. Normally I could eat 1-2squares of Lindt chocolate and stop and be satisfied. At the moment I'm practically eating the whole bloody bar and not even noticing I'm eating it! Blush

Wonder if I can manage my next FD tomorrow, it's a bit closer together than I used to do, but could do with getting another one in before the weekend as we're out for drinks and supper on Fri night.

spookyskeleton · 24/07/2014 09:06

Morning all Smile

Well done to all the fasters.

I am similar to a previous poster in that 500 calories is just impossible for me so I aim for 700 which is doable.

I need to calculate my TDEE and use MFP to regulate my non-fasting days.

Chocupid · 24/07/2014 15:49

Hi all
Anyone else fasting today apart from me and claire how are you doing?

spooky do what works for you, one step at a time!

I was ravenous this morning after a busy day forced a low cal day on a NFD.
So will try not to do that again it leads me to a binge usually.
Not eaten yet as the hunger has passed for now... I've drunk so much water but I have a real bad headache that I can't shift, don't know if it's the weather!

But the weather is helping to dumb the appetite, I just want ice cream!!

I will weigh in and post on a Tuesday like Laska I'm hoping being accountable will keep me focused.

Are you fasting today Laska?

Laska42 · 24/07/2014 18:28

hello all, i had to be out early today and not in the office so couldnt post. Yes i'm fasting today.. so far just eggs this morning .. not sure what ill be having for dinner (though courgettes will be onthe menu again!) possibly with some stir fried prawns and cherry tomatoes ( we have a glut of both!).

I think easing back in gradually is good, Dr M recommended 500 for women , but this was based on Dr Varady's Intermittent fasting experiment experiment ( where the women had 650 cals every other day) .. but its not about setting yourself up to fail.. 5:2 is supposed to become a WOE not a diet.. I quite often had 600/700 cals before and still lost ..

However one thingthat the 'oldies' have found (quite a lot of them are now 'maintainers ') is that going without food for 16 hours was good.. Hence you hear about people recording 16:8 (16 hr fasting and eating in an 8hr window.. im sure you all know this) In fact, a lot of maintainers now only fast once a week following 16:8.. (but some do go sometimes a whole 24/36hrs fasting.. ..

Something to think about for the future? .. we will get there !

I also just stopped regularly fasting.. it started last summer aftre I did a charity challenge of living on £1 a day for food ( which basically meant mainly eating potato and carrot pastry pie for 5 days (bleugh!)and NO coffee or tea at all (quite a huge challenge fo rme) -I raised a lot of money though!

I put on 5lbs in those 5 days ( dont usually do much carb) But afterthat didnt really start the old bad habits again food wise (savoury is my preference , cheese ,crackers crisps , bread ) , but found that the Wine consumption crept back up..and the resulting few pounds gradullay turned into more ..

Wine is one of my downfalls, I dont drink to get drunk , but especialy in the summer I do like a glass of chilled white or rose inthe garden of an evening , and that can easily turn into half a bottle ning each evefor me Blush not to say somewhat more at the weekend.

I still havent decided whether im giving it up for a few weeks.. the Pinot Grigio is calling me..and my DH (who works away all week) likes a glass or two also ( but I havent had any this week even though thers lots in the fridge) ..

However fridays and saturdays are NEVER fast days chez Laska.. ( idid used to always do Sunday when I was doinf 4:3.. perhaps I will again

OP posts:
Laska42 · 24/07/2014 18:33

Claire yes fruit is a sugar and a carb , .. its easier to be satiated with protien and veggies on FDs

That reminds me, I always used to recommend Dr John briffas book 'Escape The Diet Trap' and his blog - he is very good on carbs (also and why food companies promote carbs and why the diet industry does not want you to be thinner .. worth a read..

OP posts:
PrimalLass · 25/07/2014 09:44

I am dreadful at snack binging on NFDs too. I do think that long-term a 16:8 WOL or even Fast-5 would be best for me.

I am a daily weigher, so was back down to 11.2 yesterday after a FD but back up to 11.3 this morning after wine and other rubbish yesterday. I struggled for weeks to get below 11.2, but managed to get to 11.1 the day I went on holiday, 3 weeks ago.

Sorry for the obsessing. I have found that if I don't weigh daily that my head gets burred very deep in the sand.

Laska I am the same with the wine - there is nothing like a glass of very cold dry white. I usually fast on Fridays to avoid the Friday wine urge. I tend not to be so bothered about it on Saturdays.

PrimalLass · 25/07/2014 09:46

*buried, not burred

plecofjustice · 25/07/2014 11:50

I'm more of a beer person in the summer. Nothing quite hits the spot for me like a chilled, crisp weissbier, Kolsch, or, at a a push, craft lager in the garden on a warm summer evening.

Trouble is there are more calories in beer than wine!

Laska42 · 25/07/2014 12:31

HI all.. yet another scorchio day here , im about to escape the office for lunch time walk..

Had a sneaky peak on scales this morning and its looking good, but wort post until Tuesday ..Can I maintain it over the weekend?.. Im not going to give up the weekend Wine ive decided, because this is not a torture diet , but to make up am planning to fast Sunday now .(.so next week could be a 4:3)

Primalass The 'maintainers' other 5:2 success policy is NO Snacking!! even on NFDs .. its the snacks (and alcohol) especialy after 7pm that can do the damage.. In my case one easily leads to the other especialy in the cheese and biscuits area.. .

Im also saying this to remind myself also .. After 7pm eating and drinking MUST be banned Chez Laska ( Friday and sat evening dinner dont count )

Just to say that I dont tend to post at weekends as with DH home I am are usually too busy to get on the net until sunday evening , but ill here in spirit rooting for us all..

Have a good one , lets get out and enjoy the sun while it lasts..i'm lucky enough to live by the sea, so maybe ill even go in this weekend.. (havent ventured the English Channel yet this year .. will be B cold after swimming in the Med a few weeks ago though!) Shock

OP posts:
ClaireFraser · 25/07/2014 17:37

Successful fast day achieved yesterday, was rather a gannet on Wednesday.

have been fairly restrained today and think will be under TDE by the time I've had supper (this evening's supper out and drinks now cancelled - the downside of being married to a farmer who's flat out with harvest! I did think he was being optimistic when he first mentioned being able to fin early enough!)

Not sure what to have, think plenty of steamed broccoli, griddled halloumi and a nice zesty, fresh dressing for it probably. Followed by ice cream!

I've hopped on the scales every morning this week, and although I do tend to look at it on a weekly basis rather than day by day (can't resist the lure!) they're showing 2.5lb down and my trousers and bra feel a little looser. And more comfortable.

Will take measurements and do a proper weigh in on tues, but moving in the right direction. I think that's what I found so satisfying last time, you start to get results so quickly that you don't feel disheartened. With everything else I'd tried, you'd watch what you ate all week, get on the scales, and nada. The WOE doesn't do that to me.

Laska42 · 27/07/2014 17:22

Fasting today I find Sundays ok to fast as can have light breakfast and no lunch .. DH goes off back for the work week away inthe afternoon .. so just planning s/f veggies for dinner later ..

I was ok all day on Friday. didnt eat lunch and was fine until the evening Wine attack. Yesterday was a bit naughty on wine front also , but didnt go over TDEE ( and also walked a couple of miles to the beach and went swimming in the sea ..was not too chilly actually iwas surprised)..

Scales are looking good..

Ready for a new week? How was everyone's weekend?

OP posts:
PiesnThighs · 27/07/2014 20:44

Can I join you? I haven't posted on the 5:2 threads before, but did lurk when I was committed to it about a year ago.... Lost over a stone.... But have had a stressy couple of months and a couple of holidays and appear (!) to have put on 10lbs over 4 months.... And now my clothes are all way too tight. I do not want to start wearing a bigger size!
So I'm ordering a fitbit tonight, and back to fasting tomorrow. Do any of you use a fitbit and link it with MFP?
